عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ:

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَكْلِ الثُّومِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ عَنْهُ لِرِيحِهِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَ هَذِهِ الْبَقْلَةَ الْخَبِيثَةَ فَلَا يَقْرَبْ مَسْجِدَنَا فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَكَلَهُ وَ لَمْ يَأْتِ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Umar ibn ‘Udhaynah from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about garlic. He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited it only because of its smell, saying, “Whoever eats this filthy vegetable must not come near our Masjid, however, for those who eat it and do not come to the Masjid it is not unlawful.’””

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ:

سُئِلَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الثُّومِ وَ الْبَصَلِ وَ الْكُرَّاثِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِ نِيّاً وَ فِي الْقُدُورِ وَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يُتَدَاوَى بِالثُّومِ وَ لَكِنْ إِذَا أَكَلَ ذَلِكَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَخْرُجْ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ.

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Hammad from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about garlic, onion and leek. He (the Imam) said, ‘Eating them is not unlawful and in cooking pots, or for treating illnesses with garlic, however, if anyone of you eats it he must not go out to Masjid.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ الزَّيَّاتِ قَالَ:

لَمَّا أَنْ قَضَيْتُ نُسُكِي مَرَرْتُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ هُوَ بِيَنْبُعَ فَأَتَيْتُ يَنْبُعَ فَقَالَ لِي يَا حَسَنُ مَشَيْتَ إِلَى هَاهُنَا قُلْتُ نَعَمْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ وَ لَا أَرَاكَ فَقَالَ ع إِنِّي أَكَلْتُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَقْلَةِ يَعْنِي الثُّومَ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَتَنَحَّى عَنْ مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص.

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from al-Hassan al-Zayyat who has said the following: “I completed the acts of al-Hajj or ‘Umrah, I passed by al-Madinah and asked about abu Ja’far (a.s.). He said that he (the Imam) is in Yanbu’. I then went there and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Hassan, have you come walking here?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I disliked leaving without visiting you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I had eaten this vegetable, that is, garlic, so I wanted to keep away from the Masjid of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause”’
