عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع قَالَ:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى لَمْ يُحَرِّمِ الْخَمْرَ لِاسْمِهَا وَ لَكِنْ حَرَّمَهَا لِعَاقِبَتِهَا فَمَا فَعَلَ فِعْلَ الْخَمْرِ فَهُوَ خَمْرٌ.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from Ya’qub ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from his brother Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “Abu Ibrahim (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, the most Blessed, the most High, has not made wine unlawful because of its name. He has made it unlawful because of its consequences, therefore, whatever, works as wine does, it then is wine.’”

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from his brother Al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from his father Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not made wine unlawful because of its name. He has made it unlawful because of its consequences, therefore, whatever, has the same consequence as that of wine, it then is wine. 5 ”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father all from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Why has Allah prohibited wine?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He has prohibited it because of its effects and the destructive effects that it leaves behind.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever upon drinking is more pleasurable than not drinking, it is wine.’”
