قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص‌ الْمَاءُ سَيِّدُ الشَّرَابِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ. - عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِإِسْنَادِهِ‌ مِثْلَهُ.

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘Water is the master of drinks in this world and in the next world.’” A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah through the chain of his narrators has narrated a similar Hadith.

‘O Lord, You know that he (the Messenger of Allah) is more beloved to us than (our) fathers and mothers and cool water.’”

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْمَاضِي ع فَنَهَيْتُهُ عَنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ ع وَ مَا بَأْسٌ بِالْمَاءِ وَ هُوَ يُدِيرُ الطَّعَامَ فِي الْمَعِدَةِ وَ يُسَكِّنُ الْغَضَبَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي اللُّبِّ وَ يُطْفِئُ الْمِرَارَ.

“I once visited abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy, Alayhi al-Salam, and I prohibited him from drinking water. He (the Imam) said, ‘What is wrong with water when it turns food in the stomach, calms down the anger, increases marrows (learning ability) and removes bitterness?”’

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for dates which he ate and then he kept drinking water. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I wish you refrain from drinking water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I eat dates only to make water taste more delicious.’”

قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ عَجَباً لِمَنْ أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ وَ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَيْفَ لَا تَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once said, ‘I wonder about the one who eats ‘this much,’ making a hand gesture, ‘and does not drink any water on it, how is it that his stomach does not burst.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ هُوَ يُوصِي رَجُلًا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَقْلِلْ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يَمُدُّ كُلَّ دَاءٍ وَ اجْتَنِبِ الدَّوَاءَ مَا احْتَمَلَ بَدَنُكَ الدَّاءَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when giving advice to a man said, ‘Reduce drinking water; it may stretch all illness and refrain from taking medicine as long as your body can take the pain.’”

لَا بَأْسَ بِكَثْرَةِ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ وَ لَا تُكْثِرْ مِنْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ وَ قَالَ أَ رَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ جَمَعَ يَدَيْهِ كِلْتَيْهِمَا لَمْ يَضُمَّهُمَا وَ لَمْ يُفَرِّقْهُمَا ثُمَّ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَانَ يَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ.

‘It is not harmful to drink water after food but do not drink water excessively on things other than food.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Consider, the man who eats this much’ — he brought his hands close to each other and did not join them and did not keep them much apart - ‘then he does not drink water, his stomach may burst.

شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِالنَّهَارِ يُمْرِئُ الطَّعَامَ وَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِاللَّيْلِ يُورِثُ الْمَاءَ الْأَصْفَرَ.

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘During the day drinking water when standing makes the food more pleasant; but drinking water during the night when standing causes al-Safra ’ (yellowness, acidity).”’

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then a

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ.

“Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَلَا يَقْطَعُ نَفَسَهُ حَتَّى يَرْوَى قَالَ فَقَالَ ع وَ هَلِ اللَّذَّةُ إِلَّا ذَاكَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ‌[1] قَالَ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا إِنَّمَا شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ مَا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الشَّرْبَةَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيُدْخِلُهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَيَقْطَعُهُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّي الْإِنَاءَ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فِيهِ وَ يَشْرَبُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّيهِ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘A man only drinks water but Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, for that reason admits him in paradise.’ I then asked, ‘How can that happen, O child of the Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The man drinks water, stops drinking, moves the bowl away when he still has

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا شَرِبَ الْمَاءَ قَالَ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي سَقَانَا عَذْباً زُلَالًا وَ لَمْ يَسْقِنَا مِلْحاً أُجَاجاً وَ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا.

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking water would say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has given us cool and clear water and not of salty and foul smelling kind, and has not yet questioned us because of our sins.’”

إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَاءَ فَقَالَ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ سَبَّحَ ذَلِكَ الْمَاءُ لَهُ مَا دَامَ فِي بَطْنِهِ إِلَى أَنْ يَخْرُجَ.

‘If one of you drinks water, and says , ‘In the name of Allah,’ then drinks, then stops and say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah,’ He then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops, and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah’ then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops and says, ‘All praise belongs to All

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَشْرَبَ الْمَاءَ بِاللَّيْلِ فَحَرِّكِ الْمَاءَ وَ قُلْ يَا مَاءُ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ وَ مَاءُ فُرَاتٍ يُقْرِءَانِكَ السَّلَامَ.

4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you decide to drink water during the night move the water and say, ‘O water, water of Zamzam says greeting of peace to you and so also does water of Furat.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would drink water in bowls from Syria that were brought from there and given as gifts to him (the Messenger of Allah). 5 ”

كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِالْحِجْرِ فَاسْتَسْقَى مَاءً فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ صُفْرٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ إِنَّ عَبَّادَ بْنَ كَثِيرٍ يَكْرَهُ الشُّرْبَ فِي الصُّفْرِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ وَ قَالَ ع لِلرَّجُلِ أَلَّا سَأَلْتَهُ أَ ذَهَبٌ هُوَ أَمْ فِضَّةٌ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), in al-Hijr (near al-Ka‘bah) and he asked for water. Water was brought in a yellow bowl (made of brass) and a man said, “Abbad ibn Kathir dislikes drinking water from yellow.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He (the Imam) said to the man, ‘Did you ask him (‘Abbad ibn Kat

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ لَا تَشْرَبُوا الْمَاءَ مِنْ ثُلْمَةِ الْإِنَاءِ[2] وَ لَا مِنْ عُرْوَتِهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَقْعُدُ عَلَى الْعُرْوَةِ وَ الثُّلْمَةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Do not drink water from the broken part of a bowl or from its handle because Satan sits on the broken part and on the handle (ring).”’

قَالَ أَبِي لِعَمْرِو بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ وَ بَشِيرٍ الرَّحَّالِ وَ وَاصِلٍ فِي حَدِيثٍ وَ لَا يُشْرَبُ مِنْ أُذُنِ الْكُوزِ وَ لَا مِنْ كَسْرِهِ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ مَشْرَبُ الشَّيَاطِينِ.

“Do not drink water from the ear (handle) of a bowl or its broken part if there is any, because it is the place from which Satan drinks.’””

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وَ ذَكَرَ مِصْرَ فَقَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص لَا تَأْكُلُوا فِي فَخَّارِهَا وَ لَا تَغْسِلُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ بِطِينِهَا فَإِنَّهُ يَذْهَبُ بِالْغَيْرَةِ وَ يُورِثُ الدِّيَاثَةَ.

‘When a city (Egypt) was mentioned, the Holy Prophet, said, ‘You must not eat in its pottery bowls; do not wash your head with its clay because it takes away one’s courage (protective feeling) and causes one to become a pimp.’”

كَانَتْ زَمْزَمُ أَشَدَّ بَيَاضاً مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَ أَحْلَى مِنَ الشَّهْدِ وَ كَانَتْ سَائِحَةً فَبَغَتْ عَلَى الْأَمْيَاهِ‌[1] فَأَغَارَهَا اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَ عَزَّ وَ أَجْرَى عَلَيْهَا عَيْناً مِنْ صَبِرٍ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the water of Zamzam was whiter than milk, sweeter than honey and it flowed. It then oppressed other waters. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, made it to sink and a fountain of Saber e (aloe) to flow on it.’”

ذُكِرَتْ زَمْزَمُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ أُجْرِيَ إِلَيْهَا عَيْنٌ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْحِجْرِ فَإِذَا غَلَبَ مَاءُ الْعَيْنِ عَذُبَ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ.

2. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith, the following is narrated: “Once, Zamzam was mentioned before abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) said, ’A fountain from under the stone was made to flow on it. When the water of the fountain overwhelms it, water of Zamzam becomes sweet.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ خَيْرُ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ وَ شَرُّ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ مَاءُ بَرَهُوتَ الَّذِي بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ تَرِدُهُ هَامُ الْكُفَّارِ بِاللَّيْلِ.

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘The water of Zamzam is the best water on earth. The worst water on earth is the water of Barhut which is in Hadra maxvt upon which wandering unbelievers roam during the night.’”

اشْتَكَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ إِخْوَانِنَا بِمَكَّةَ حَتَّى سَقَطَ لِلْمَوْتِ فَلَقِينَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ يَا مُصَادِفُ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ قُلْتُ تَرَكْتُهُ بِالْمَوْتِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ أَمَا لَوْ كُنْتُ مَكَانَكُمْ لَسَقَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمِيزَابِ فَطَلَبْنَا عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا ارْتَفَعَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَأَرْعَدَتْ وَ أَبْرَقَتْ وَ أَمْطَرَ

“Once in Makkah one of our brothers (in belief) fell ill and was near death. We met abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), on the way and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Musadif, how is so and so doing?’ I replied, ‘I left him for death, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Were I in your place I wo

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ اشْرَبُوا مَاءَ السَّمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يُطَهِّرُ الْبَدَنَ وَ يَدْفَعُ الْأَسْقَامَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ يُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ‌ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ‌ بِهِ وَ يُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطانِ وَ لِيَرْبِطَ عَلى‌ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَ يُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدامَ‌[1].

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ نَهَرُكُمْ هَذَا يَعْنِي مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ يَصُبُّ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنْ مَيَازِيبِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَوْ كَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ أَمْيَالٌ لَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَ نَسْتَسْقِي بِهِ‌[5].

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘In your canal, this one, that is, Euphrates, there are two shoots of the shoots of the garden (paradise).’ He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Had there not been many miles in between we would drink water from it (Euphrates).”’
