خَرَجَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ع إِلَى مَكَّةَ سَنَةً مَاشِياً فَوَرِمَتْ قَدَمَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُ مَوَالِيهِ لَوْ رَكِبْتَ لَسَكَنَ عَنْكَ هَذَا الْوَرَمُ فَقَالَ كَلَّا إِذَا أَتَيْنَا هَذَا الْمَنْزِلَ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَقْبِلُكَ أَسْوَدُ وَ مَعَهُ دُهْنٌ فَاشْتَرِ مِنْهُ وَ لَا تُمَاكِسْهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَوْلَاهُ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي مَا قَدِمْنَا مَنْزِلًا فِيهِ أَحَدٌ يَبِيعُ هَذَا الدَّوَاءَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ب

“One year al-Hassan ibn Ali left for Mecca on foot. On the journey his feet swelled and his servants said, 'If you would ride the swelling will go away.' He said, 'Nay, if we reach this place of rest you will a black person who has oil with him, buy from oil without trying to reduce the price.' The servant said, 'May m

قُبِضَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ع- يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ سَبْعٍ وَ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً.

“Al-Husayn (a.s.) passed away on the day of ‘Ashura’ and he was fifty seven years old.”

كَانَ بَيْنَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع طُهْرٌ وَ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمَا فِي الْمِيلَادِ سِتَّةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَ عَشْراً.

“The time between the birth of al-Hasan and the conception for al-Husayn was like one menstuaral cycle and the time between the birth of the two was six months and ten days.”

لَمَّا حَمَلَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع بِالْحُسَيْنِ جَاءَ جَبْرَئِيلُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ ع سَتَلِدُ غُلَاماً تَقْتُلُهُ أُمَّتُكَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ فَلَمَّا حَمَلَتْ فَاطِمَةُ بِالْحُسَيْنِ ع كَرِهَتْ حَمْلَهُ وَ حِينَ وَضَعَتْهُ كَرِهَتْ وَضْعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَمْ تُرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا أُمٌّ تَلِدُ غُلَاماً تَكْرَهُهُ وَ لَكِنَّهَا كَرِهَتْهُ لِمَا عَلِمَتْ أَنَّهُ سَيُقْتَلُ قَالَ

“When Fatima (a.s.) conceived al-Husayn (a.s.) Jibril came to the Messenger of Allah and said, “Fatima will soon give birth to a son. Your ’Umma (followers) will kill him after you will die.” When Fatima had conceived al-Husayn she was unhappy and when she gave birth she was unhappy. Then The Imam (a.s.) said, “No moth

إِنَّ جَبْرَئِيلَ ع نَزَلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ص فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِمَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ مِنْ فَاطِمَةَ تَقْتُلُهُ أُمَّتُكَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ فَقَالَ يَا جَبْرَئِيلُ وَ عَلَى رَبِّيَ السَّلَامُ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِي مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ مِنْ فَاطِمَةَ تَقْتُلُهُ أُمَّتِي مِنْ بَعْدِي فَعَرَجَ ثُمَّ هَبَطَ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ يَا جَبْرَئِيلُ وَ عَلَى رَبِّيَ السَّلَامُ لَا حَاجَةَ

“Once Jibril came to Muhammad (s.a) and said tohim, “O Muhammad, Allah gives you the glad news of the birth of a son from Fatima. Your ’Umma (followers0 will kill this child after you will die.” He said, “O Jibril peace is from my Lord. I do not need a child from Fatima who will be killed by my ’Umma after I will die.”

حَسَبَ فَرَأَى مَا يَحُلُّ بِالْحُسَيْنِ ع فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٌ لِمَا يَحُلُّ بِالْحُسَيْنِ ع.

“I am sick!” (37:89). The Imam (a.s.) said, “He calculated and found what had t happen to al-Husayn (a.s.) then he said, “I am sick for what will happen to al-Husayn (a.s.).”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَمَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع مَا كَانَ ضَجَّتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ إِلَى اللَّهِ بِالْبُكَاءِ وَ قَالَتْ يُفْعَلُ هَذَا بِالْحُسَيْنِ صَفِيِّكَ وَ ابْنِ نَبِيِّكَ قَالَ فَأَقَامَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ظِلَّ الْقَائِمِ ع وَ قَالَ بِهَذَا أَنْتَقِمُ لِهَذَا.

“Abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) has said, ‘When all that happened to al-Husayn had happened, the angels wept and cried before Allah and said, “How such thing would happen to al-Husayn Your chosen one and the grand son of Your Prophet?” The Imam (a.s.) has said that Allah then showed to them the shadow of Al-Qa’im (the one who wi

لَمَّا نَزَلَ النَّصْرُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ حَتَّى كَانَ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَ الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ خُيِّرَ النَّصْرَ أَوْ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ فَاخْتَارَ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ.

“When Victory came down upon al-Husayn ibn Ali until it was between the sky and the earth, he then was given the choice between Victory or meeting Allah, so he chose to meet Allah."

لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ ع أَرَادَ الْقَوْمُ أَنْ يُوطِئُوهُ الْخَيْلَ فَقَالَتْ فِضَّةُ لِزَيْنَبَ يَا سَيِّدَتِي إِنَّ سَفِينَةَ[4] كُسِرَ بِهِ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَخَرَجَ إِلَى جَزِيرَةٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِأَسَدٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا الْحَارِثِ أَنَا مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَهَمْهَمَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى وَقَفَهُ‌[5] عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ وَ الْأَسَدُ رَابِضٌ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ[6] فَدَعِينِي أَمْضِي إِلَيْهِ وَ أُعْلِمُهُ مَا هُم

"When al-Husayn (a.s.) was murdered the people wanted to make the horses run over his (al-Husayn’s) body. Fizzah then told Zaynab, 'My lady, there was a shipwreck and Safina came out on an Island face-to-face with a lion. He said to the lion, 'O Abu al-Harith, I am the slave of the Messenger of Allah.' سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ ع أَقَامَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ الْكَلْبِيَّةُ عَلَيْهِ مَأْتَماً وَ بَكَتْ وَ بَكَيْنَ النِّسَاءُ وَ الْخَدَمُ حَتَّى جَفَّتْ دُمُوعُهُنَّ وَ ذَهَبَتْ فَبَيْنَا هِيَ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا رَأَتْ جَارِيَةً مِنْ جَوَارِيهَا تَبْكِي وَ دُمُوعُهَا تَسِيلُ فَدَعَتْهَا فَقَالَتْ لَهَا مَا لَكِ أَنْتِ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا تَسِيلُ دُمُوعُكِ قَالَتْ إِنِّي لَمَّا أَصَابَنِي الْجَ

لَمَّا أُقْدِمَتْ بِنْتُ يَزْدَجِرْدَ عَلَى عُمَرَ أَشْرَفَ لَهَا عَذَارَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَ أَشْرَقَ الْمَسْجِدُ بِضَوْئِهَا لَمَّا دَخَلَتْهُ فَلَمَّا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا عُمَرُ غَطَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَ قَالَتْ أُفٍّ بِيرُوجْ بَادَا هُرْمُزْ[1] فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَ تَشْتِمُنِي هَذِهِ وَ هَمَّ بِهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ لَكَ خَيِّرْهَا رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ احْسُبْهَا بِفَيْئِهِ فَخَيَّرَ

“When the daughter of Yazdegerd was brought before ‘Umar the girls of Medina would love to see her. When she entered the Mosque it all became delightful and bright. When ‘Umar looked at her she covered her face and said in her own language: 'Uff, bay ruj ba’ da Hurmuz' (May, the life of Hurmuz turn black). ‘Umar asked,

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ‌ كَانَ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع نَاقَةٌ حَجَّ عَلَيْهَا اثْنَتَيْنِ وَ عِشْرِينَ حَجَّةً مَا قَرَعَهَا قَرْعَةً قَطُّ قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ وَ مَا شَعَرْنَا بِهَا إِلَّا وَ قَدْ جَاءَنِي بَعْضُ خَدَمِنَا أَوْ بَعْضُ الْمَوَالِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّاقَةَ قَدْ خَرَجَتْ فَأَتَتْ قَبْرَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ فَانْبَرَكَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَدَلَكَتْ بِجِرَانِهَا الْقَبْرَ وَ هِيَ

“I heard Abu Ja‘far (a.s.) say, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) had a she camel. He had taken this camel twenty two times to Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) and had not used the whip against not even once. The Imam (a.s.) has said that the camel came after he passed away and we were not aware but we noticed only when one of the s

لَمَّا مَاتَ أَبِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع جَاءَتْ نَاقَةٌ لَهُ مِنَ الرَّعْيِ حَتَّى ضَرَبَتْ بِجِرَانِهَا عَلَى الْقَبْرِ وَ تَمَرَّغَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَأَمَرْتُ بِهَا فَرُدَّتْ إِلَى مَرْعَاهَا وَ إِنَّ أَبِي ع كَانَ يَحُجُّ عَلَيْهَا وَ يَعْتَمِرُ وَ لَمْ يَقْرَعْهَا قَرْعَةً قَطُّ. ابْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ‌[1].

“When my father, Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) passed away the she camel that belonged to him came from the pasture and placed her neck against his grave and role her body on the ground. لَمَّا كَانَ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الَّتِي وُعِدَ فِيهَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع قَالَ لِمُحَمَّدٍ ع يَا بُنَيَّ ابْغِنِي وَضُوءاً- قَالَ فَقُمْتُ فَجِئْتُهُ بِوَضُوءٍ قَالَ لَا أَبْغِي هَذَا فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شَيْئاً مَيِّتاً قَالَ فَخَرَجْتُ فَجِئْتُ بِالْمِصْبَاحِ فَإِذَا فِيهِ فَأْرَةٌ مَيْتَةٌ فَجِئْتُهُ بِوَضُوءٍ غَيْرِهِ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي وُعِدْتُهَا فَأَوْصَى بِنَاقَتِهِ أَنْ يُحْظَرَ لَ

On the night when Ali ibn al-Husayn (as) was promised [his death], he said to Muhammad (as), "My son, bring me some water for ablution." So I stood up and brought him water for ablution. He said, "Not this, for there is something dead in it." So I went out and brought a lamp, and there was a dead mouse in it. I brought

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع لَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ فَتَحَ عَيْنَيْهِ وَ قَرَأَ إِذا وَقَعَتِ‌ الْواقِعَةُ وَ إِنَّا فَتَحْنا لَكَ‌ وَ قَالَ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي صَدَقَنا وَعْدَهُ‌ وَ أَوْرَثَنَا الْأَرْضَ‌ نَتَبَوَّأُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ نَشاءُ فَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعامِلِينَ‌ ثُمَّ قُبِضَ مِنْ سَاعَتِهِ وَ لَمْ يَقُلْ شَيْئاً.

‘When Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) was about to pass away he passed out then he opened his eyes and recited chapters 48 and 56 from the Holy Quran and said, “All praise belongs to Allah Who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us to inherit the earth passed out and chose from Paradise whatever we would like and thus is

كَانَتْ أُمِّي قَاعِدَةً عِنْدَ جِدَارٍ فَتَصَدَّعَ الْجِدَارُ وَ سَمِعْنَا هَدَّةً شَدِيدَةً فَقَالَتْ بِيَدِهَا لَا وَ حَقِّ الْمُصْطَفَى مَا أَذِنَ اللَّهُ لَكَ فِي السُّقُوطِ فَبَقِيَ مُعَلَّقاً فِي الْجَوِّ حَتَّى جَازَتْهُ فَتَصَدَّقَ أَبِي عَنْهَا بِمِائَةِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ أَبُو الصَّبَّاحِ وَ ذَكَرَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جَدَّتَهُ أُمَّ أَبِيهِ يَوْماً فَقَالَ كَانَتْ صِدِّيقَةً لَمْ تُدْرَكْ فِي آلِ الْحَسَن

“My mother was sitting by a wall when it began to crack, and we heard a loud noise. She raised her hand and said, "No, by the right of Al-Mustafa (the Prophet Muhammad), God has not permitted you to fall." The wall remained suspended in the air until she passed by. My father then gave charity on her behalf of one hundr

إِنَّ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ كَانَ آخِرَ مَنْ بَقِيَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ‌[1] وَ كَانَ رَجُلًا مُنْقَطِعاً إِلَيْنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ كَانَ يَقْعُدُ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ هُوَ مُعْتَجِرٌ[2] بِعِمَامَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ وَ كَانَ يُنَادِي يَا بَاقِرَ الْعِلْمِ يَا بَاقِرَ الْعِلْمِ فَكَانَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُونَ- جَابِرٌ يَهْجُرُ فَكَانَ يَقُولُ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَهْجُرُ

'Jabir ibn ‘Abdallah al-Ansari was last surviving of the companions of the Messenger of Allah. He was a devoted follower of us, Ahl al-Bayt. دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَنْتُمْ وَرَثَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص وَارِثُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ عَلِمَ كُلَّ مَا عَلِمُوا قَالَ لِي نَعَمْ قُلْتُ فَأَنْتُمْ تَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْ تُحْيُوا الْمَوْتَى وَ تُبْرِءُوا الْأَكْمَهَ وَ الْأَبْرَصَ قَالَ نَعَمْ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَ ادْنُ مِنِّي يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ فَمَسَحَ عَلَى وَجْهِي وَ عَلَى عَ

“Once I went to see abu Ja‘far (a.s.) and asked him, “Are you the heirs of the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Yes, we are his heirs.” I then asked, “Was the Messenger of Allah the heir of the prophets and knew all that they knew?” He said to me, “Yes, it is true.” I then asked, “Do you have the power to bring the dead

كُنْتُ عِنْدَهُ يَوْماً إِذْ وَقَعَ- زَوْجُ وَرَشَانٍ عَلَى الْحَائِطِ وَ هَدَلَا هَدِيلَهُمَا[1] فَرَدَّ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع عَلَيْهِمَا كَلَامَهُمَا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ نَهَضَا فَلَمَّا طَارَا عَلَى الْحَائِطِ هَدَلَ الذَّكَرُ عَلَى الْأُنْثَى سَاعَةً ثُمَّ نَهَضَا فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا هَذَا الطَّيْرُ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ خَلَقَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ طَيْرٍ أَوْ بَهِيمَةٍ أَوْ شَيْ‌ءٍ فِيهِ رُوحٌ فَهُوَ

“One day I was in the presence of Abu Ja‘far (a.s.) that a pair of turtledoves came and sat on the wall and exchanged voices as they usually do. Abu Ja‘far (a.s.) then also exchanged voices with them for a while. They then flew away and on the other wall the male sounded to the female for a while and then both of them

لَمَّا حُمِلَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع إِلَى الشَّامِ إِلَى هِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَ صَارَ بِبَابِهِ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ وَ مَنْ كَانَ بِحَضْرَتِهِ مِنْ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي قَدْ وَبَّخْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُمُونِي قَدْ سَكَتُّ فَلْيُقْبِلْ عَلَيْهِ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيُوَبِّخْهُ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُؤْذَنَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ بِيَدِهِ السَّلَام

“When abu Ja‘far (a.s.) was taken to al-Sham (Damascus) to the court of hisham ibn ‘Abd al-Malik. When arrived at his door he (Hisham) instructed his people from the Amawids, “When I will finish exasperating Muhammad ibn Ali (a.s.) and stop then each of you one after the other should reprimand and level blames on him.”

قُبِضَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْبَاقِرُ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ سَبْعٍ وَ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً فِي عَامِ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ وَ مِائَةٍ عَاشَ بَعْدَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً وَ شَهْرَيْنِ.

“Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir passed away at the age of fifty seven, in the year one hundred fourteen AH. He lived for nineteen years and two months after Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.).”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ كَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ وَ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْكَابُلِيُّ مِنْ ثِقَاتِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع قَالَ وَ كَانَتْ أُمِّي مِمَّنْ آمَنَتْ وَ اتَّقَتْ وَ أَحْسَنَتْ‌ وَ اللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ* قَالَ وَ قَالَتْ أُمِّي قَالَ أَبِي يَا أُمَّ فَرْوَةَ إِنِّي لَأَدْعُو اللَّهَ لِمُذْنِبِي شِيعَتِنَا فِي الْيَوْمِ وَ اللَّيْلَةِ أَلْفَ

“Abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) has said, ‘Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr and Abu al-Khalid al-Kabuli were of the trusted and reliable companions of Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.).” The Imam (a.s.) has said, “My mother was a true believer, pious and a person of good deeds. Allah loves the people of good deed

وَجَّهَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الْمَنْصُورُ إِلَى الْحَسَنِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَ هُوَ وَالِيهِ عَلَى الْحَرَمَيْنِ أَنْ أَحْرِقْ عَلَى جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ دَارَهُ فَأَلْقَى النَّارَ فِي دَارِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَأَخَذَتِ النَّارُ فِي الْبَابِ وَ الدِّهْلِيزِ فَخَرَجَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَتَخَطَّى النَّارَ وَ يَمْشِي فِيهَا وَ يَقُولُ أَنَا ابْنُ أَعْرَاقِ الثَّرَى أَنَا ابْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلِ اللَّهِ ع.

‘I am the son of ’A‘raq al-Thara (’Isma‘il), I am the son of Ibrahim, (Abraham) the beloved friend of Allah.”

سَخِطَ عَلَيَّ ابْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ وَ حَلَفَ عَلَيَّ لَيَقْتُلُنِي فَهَرَبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ عُذْتُ بِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَأَعْلَمْتُهُ خَبَرِي فَقَالَ لِيَ انْصَرِفْ وَ أَقْرِئْهُ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ وَ قُلْ لَهُ إِنِّي قَدْ آجَرْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَوْلَاكَ- رُفَيْداً فَلَا تَهِجْهُ بِسُوءٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ شَامِيٌّ خَبِيثُ الرَّأْيِ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ إِلَيْهِ كَمَا أَقُولُ لَكَ فَأَقْبَلْتُ فَلَمَّا كُنْتُ فِي بَعْ

:Once Hubayra became angery with me and swore to kill me. I ran away from him in fear and sought refuge with abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.). I informed him of my story and he said, “Go back and convey my greetings to him and say to him, on my behalf, “I haven given refuge and protection against you to your slave, Rufayd. Do not

عِنْدَنَا خَزَائِنُ الْأَرْضِ وَ مَفَاتِيحُهَا وَ لَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أَقُولَ بِإِحْدَى رِجْلَيَّ أَخْرِجِي مَا فِيكِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ لَأَخْرَجَتْ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِإِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ فَخَطَّهَا فِي الْأَرْضِ خَطّاً فَانْفَرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدِهِ فَأَخْرَجَ سَبِيكَةَ ذَهَبٍ قَدْرَ شِبْرٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ انْظُرُوا حَسَناً فَنَظَرْنَا فَإِذَا سَبَائِكُ كَثِيرَةٌ بَعْضُهَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَلَأْلَأُ فَقَالَ لَهُ

“Once we were in the presence of abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) and he said, “We have the key to the treassures of the earth. If I would say to one of my foot to say to the earth, ‘Let out whatever all the gold that is there in you, it will do so.” The narrator has said that he then said to one of his feet and made aline withit

كَانَ لِي جَارٌ يَتَّبِعُ السُّلْطَانَ فَأَصَابَ مَالًا فَأَعَدَّ قِيَاناً وَ كَانَ يَجْمَعُ الْجَمِيعَ إِلَيْهِ وَ يَشْرَبُ الْمُسْكِرَ وَ يُؤْذِينِي فَشَكَوْتُهُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ غَيْرَ مَرَّةٍ فَلَمْ يَنْتَهِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ أَلْحَحْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لِي يَا هَذَا أَنَا رَجُلٌ مُبْتَلًى وَ أَنْتَ رَجُلٌ مُعَافًى فَلَوْ عَرَضْتَنِي لِصَاحِبِكَ رَجَوْتُ أَنْ يُنْقِذَنِيَ اللَّهُ بِكَ فَوَقَعَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فِي قَلْبِي ف

“I had a neighbor who followed the Sultan and he gains certain properties. He would arrange parties and invite female singers. They would drink wine and would disturb me. I complained to the man several times but he would not pay any attention. When I insisted he said, “O man, “I am an addicted man and you are sober. I

قَالَ لِي أَ تَدْرِي مَا كَانَ سَبَبُ دُخُولِنَا فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ وَ مَعْرِفَتِنَا بِهِ وَ مَا كَانَ عِنْدَنَا مِنْهُ ذِكْرٌ وَ لَا مَعْرِفَةُ شَيْ‌ءٍ مِمَّا عِنْدَ النَّاسِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا ذَاكَ قَالَ إِنَّ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ يَعْنِي أَبَا الدَّوَانِيقِ قَالَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْأَشْعَثِ يَا مُحَمَّدُ ابْغِ لِي رَجُلًا لَهُ عَقْلٌ يُؤَدِّي عَنِّي فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي قَدْ أَصَبْتُهُ لَكَ هَذَا فُلَانُ بْنُ

“Do you know the reason that we came in this matter (became Shi‘a) and recognized it even though there was no mention of it among us and we had no knowledge of what other people (Shi‘a) had?” The narrator has said that I asked him, “What then is the reason for it?” He said, “Abu Ja‘far, abu Dawaniq once said to abu Muh

قُبِضَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ع وَ هُوَ ابْنُ خَمْسٍ وَ سِتِّينَ سَنَةً فِي عَامِ ثَمَانٍ وَ أَرْبَعِينَ وَ مِائَةٍ وَ عَاشَ بَعْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَرْبَعاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ سَنَةً.

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ أَنَا كَفَّنْتُ أَبِي فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ شَطَوِيَّيْنِ‌[1] كَانَ يُحْرِمُ فِيهِمَا وَ فِي قَمِيصٍ مِنْ قُمُصِهِ وَ فِي عِمَامَةٍ كَانَتْ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع وَ فِي بُرْدٍ اشْتَرَاهُ بِأَرْبَعِينَ دِينَاراً.

“I shrouded my father with two pieces of winter clothes that he had used as the clothe for Ihram (special clothes used during performing Hajj). Also a shirt of his shirts and the ‘Amama (turban) that belonged to Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) and a gown that he had bought for forty Dinars were used.”

دَخَلَ ابْنُ عُكَّاشَةَ بْنِ مِحْصَنٍ الْأَسَدِيُّ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَ كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَائِماً عِنْدَهُ فَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْهِ عِنَباً فَقَالَ حَبَّةً حَبَّةً يَأْكُلُهُ الشَّيْخُ الْكَبِيرُ وَ الصَّبِيُّ الصَّغِيرُ وَ ثَلَاثَةً وَ أَرْبَعَةً يَأْكُلُهُ مَنْ يَظُنُّ أَنَّهُ لَا يَشْبَعُ وَ كُلْهُ حَبَّتَيْنِ حَبَّتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يُسْتَحَبُّ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع لِأَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ لَا تُزَوِّجُ أَبَا

“Once ibn al-‘Ukkasha ibn Muhsin al-Asadi went to see abu Ja‘far and abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) was present with him. Grapes were offered to him. The Imam (a.s.) said, “The old man and the small boy eat grasps one piece at a time and one who is anxious for filling himself up eats several pieces at a time but you should take

حَمِيدَةُ مُصَفَّاةٌ مِنَ الْأَدْنَاسِ كَسَبِيكَةِ الذَّهَبِ مَا زَالَتِ الْأَمْلَاكُ تَحْرُسُهَا حَتَّى أُدِّيَتْ إِلَيَّ كَرَامَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ لِي وَ الْحُجَّةِ مِنْ بَعْدِي.

“Abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) said, “Humayda is clean of uncleanliness like purified gold. The angels continuously guarded her until she reach me due to Allah’s regards for me and the possessor of Leadership with Divine Authority after me.”

لَمَّا أُقْدِمَ بِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع عَلَى الْمَهْدِيِّ الْقُدْمَةَ الْأُولَى نَزَلَ زُبَالَةَ فَكُنْتُ أُحَدِّثُهُ فَرَآنِي مَغْمُوماً فَقَالَ لِي يَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ مَا لِي أَرَاكَ مَغْمُوماً فَقُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ لَا أَغْتَمُّ وَ أَنْتَ تُحْمَلُ إِلَى هَذِهِ الطَّاغِيَةِ وَ لَا أَدْرِي مَا يُحْدِثُ فِيكَ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيَّ بَأْسٌ إِذَا كَانَ شَهْرُ كَذَا وَ كَذَا وَ يَوْمُ كَذَا فَوَافِنِي فِي أَوَّلِ الْمِي

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع إِذْ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ نَصْرَانِيٌّ وَ نَحْنُ مَعَهُ بِالْعُرَيْضِ‌[2] فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّصْرَانِيُّ أَتَيْتُكَ مِنْ بَلَدٍ بَعِيدٍ وَ سَفَرٍ شَاقٍّ وَ سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي مُنْذُ ثَلَاثِينَ سَنَةً أَنْ يُرْشِدَنِي إِلَى خَيْرِ الْأَدْيَانِ وَ إِلَى خَيْرِ الْعِبَادِ وَ أَعْلَمِهِمْ وَ أَتَانِي آتٍ فِي النَّوْمِ فَوَصَفَ لِي رَجُلًا بِعُلْيَا دِمَشْقَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُهُ فَكَ

“I was in the presence of abu al-Hassan Musa (a.s.) that a Christian man came to see him. At this time we were with him in al-‘Urayd. The Christian man said, “I have come to you from a far away place after a difficult journey. I have been praying to my Lord for thirty years to guide me to the best of the religions and

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع وَ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ الْيَمَنِ مِنَ الرُّهْبَانِ وَ مَعَهُ رَاهِبَةٌ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ لَهُمَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِذَا كَانَ غَداً فَأْتِ بِهِمَا عِنْدَ بِئْرِ أُمِّ خَيْرٍ قَالَ فَوَافَيْنَا مِنَ الْغَدِ فَوَجَدْنَا الْقَوْمَ قَدْ وَافَوْا فَأَمَرَ بِخَصَفَةِ بَوَارِيَّ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ وَ جَلَسُوا فَبَدَأَتِ الرَّاهِبَةُ بِالْمَسَائِلِ فَسَأَلَتْ عَنْ

مَرَّ الْعَبْدُ الصَّالِحُ بِامْرَأَةٍ بِمِنًى وَ هِيَ تَبْكِي وَ صِبْيَانُهَا حَوْلَهَا يَبْكُونَ وَ قَدْ مَاتَتْ لَهَا بَقَرَةٌ فَدَنَا مِنْهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا مَا يُبْكِيكِ يَا أَمَةَ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لَنَا صِبْيَاناً يَتَامَى وَ كَانَتْ لِي بَقَرَةٌ مَعِيشَتِي وَ مَعِيشَةُ صِبْيَانِي كَانَ مِنْهَا وَ قَدْ مَاتَتْ وَ بَقِيتُ مُنْقَطَعاً بِي وَ بِوُلْدِي لَا حِيلَةَ لَنَا فَقَالَ يَا أَمَة

سَمِعْتُ الْعَبْدَ الصَّالِحَ يَنْعَى إِلَى رَجُلٍ نَفْسَهُ فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي وَ إِنَّهُ لَيَعْلَمُ مَتَى يَمُوتُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ شِبْهَ الْمُغْضَبِ فَقَالَ يَا إِسْحَاقُ قَدْ كَانَ رُشَيْدٌ الْهَجَرِيُّ يَعْلَمُ عِلْمَ الْمَنَايَا وَ الْبَلَايَا وَ الْإِمَامُ أَوْلَى بِعِلْمِ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا إِسْحَاقُ اصْنَعْ مَا أَنْتَ صَانِعٌ فَإِنَّ عُمُرَكَ قَدْ فَنِيَ وَ إِنَّكَ تَمُوتُ إِ

جَاءَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ‌[1] وَ قَدِ اعْتَمَرْنَا عُمْرَةَ رَجَبٍ وَ نَحْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَكَّةَ فَقَالَ يَا عَمِّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ بَغْدَادَ وَ قَدْ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُوَدِّعَ عَمِّي أَبَا الْحَسَنِ يَعْنِي مُوسَى بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ تَذْهَبَ مَعِي إِلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ نَحْوَ أَخِي وَ هُوَ فِي دَارِهِ الَّتِي بِالْحَوْبَةِ وَ ذَلِكَ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ بِقَلِيلٍ فَضَرَبْتُ الْبَابَ فَأَج

“Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il came to me when we were still in Makka after completing our ‘Umra in the month of Rajab. He said, “Uncle, I intend to go to Baghdad but I want to say farewell to my uncle, abu al-Hassan Musa ibn Ja‘far (a.s.) aand I would like that you also come with me.” I came with him to my brother and he was

قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلُ هَلْ عَلِمْتَ أَحَداً مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَغْرِبِ قَدِمَ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ بَلَى قَدْ قَدِمَ رَجُلٌ فَانْطَلِقْ بِنَا فَرَكِبَ وَ رَكِبْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الرَّجُلِ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ مَعَهُ رَقِيقٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ اعْرِضْ عَلَيْنَا فَعَرَضَ عَلَيْنَا سَبْعَ جَوَارٍ كُلَّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ اعْرِضْ عَل

“Once abu al-Hassan, the second asked me, “Do you know if anyone from Morocco (or the west) has arrived?” I replied, “No, no one has come.” He said, “Yes, a man has come. Come with us.” He rode and also rode and went until we reached the man. He was a man from Madina who had a few slaves with him for sale. I asked him

لَمَّا مَضَى أَبُو إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع وَ تَكَلَّمَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع خِفْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَظْهَرْتَ أَمْراً عَظِيماً وَ إِنَّا نَخَافُ عَلَيْكَ هَذِهِ الطَّاغِيَةَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِيَجْهَدْ جَهْدَهُ فَلَا سَبِيلَ لَهُ عَلَيَّ.

“when abu Ibrahim (a.s.) passed away abu al-Hassan (al-Rida) (a.s.) spoke (about his Imamat) and we became afraid for him because of it. It was said to him, “You have declared a very great issue and we are afraid for you from this rebel.” The Imam (a.s.) said, “Let him strive his best but he will find way against me.”

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الرِّضَا ع فِي بَيْتٍ دَاخِلٍ فِي جَوْفِ بَيْتٍ لَيْلًا فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَكَانَتْ كَأَنَّ فِي الْبَيْتِ عَشَرَةَ مَصَابِيحَ وَ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَخَلَّى يَدَهُ ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لَهُ.

“Once I went to see al-Rida (a.s.) in a house inside his house in the middle of the night. He raised his hand and it was as if there were ten lamps inside the house and a man asked permission for a meeting. He lowered his hand and then gave him permission.”

كَانَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ مَوْلَى النَّبِيِّ ص يُقَالُ لَهُ طَيْسٌ عَلَيَّ حَقٌّ فَتَقَاضَانِي وَ أَلَحَّ عَلَيَّ وَ أَعَانَهُ النَّاسُ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ ذَلِكَ صَلَّيْتُ الصُّبْحَ فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ ع ثُمَّ تَوَجَّهْتُ نَحْوَ الرِّضَا ع وَ هُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِالْعُرَيْضِ فَلَمَّا قَرُبْتُ مِنْ بَابِهِ إِذَا هُوَ قَدْ طَلَعَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ وَ عَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ وَ رِدَاءٌ فَلَمَّا نَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ اسْتَح

“I owed money to a man from the family of abu Rafi‘, slave of the Holy Prophet (s.a), called Tays. He demanded payment and pressed me hard and people also assisted him. When I found myself in such condition I prayed the morning prayer in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah and then headed to al-Rida (a.s.) who was in

بَانِي فَارِعٍ وَ هَادِمُهُ يُقَطَّعُ إِرْباً إِرْباً فَلَمْ نَدْرِ مَا مَعْنَى ذَلِكَ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى وَافَى هَارُونُ وَ نَزَلَ بِذَلِكَ الْمَوْضِعِ صَعِدَ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ذَلِكَ الْجَبَلَ وَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُبْنَى لَهُ ثَمَّ مَجْلِسٌ فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ مِنْ مَكَّةَ صَعِدَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَمَرَ بِهَدْمِهِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ قُطِّعَ إِرْباً إِرْباً.

أَلْحَحْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ أَطْلُبُهُ مِنْهُ فَكَانَ يَعِدُنِي فَخَرَجَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ لِيَسْتَقْبِلَ وَالِيَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَ كُنْتُ مَعَهُ فَجَاءَ إِلَى قُرْبِ قَصْرِ فُلَانٍ فَنَزَلَ تَحْتَ شَجَرَاتٍ وَ نَزَلْتُ مَعَهُ أَنَا وَ لَيْسَ مَعَنَا ثَالِثٌ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَذَا الْعِيدُ قَدْ أَظَلَّنَا وَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَمْلِكُ دِرْهَماً فَمَا سِوَاهُ فَحَكَّ بِسَوْطِهِ الْأَرْضَ

لَمَّا انْقَضَى أَمْرُ الْمَخْلُوعِ‌[1] وَ اسْتَوَى الْأَمْرُ لِلْمَأْمُونِ كَتَبَ إِلَى الرِّضَا ع يَسْتَقْدِمُهُ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ فَاعْتَلَّ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع بِعِلَلٍ فَلَمْ يَزَلِ الْمَأْمُونُ يُكَاتِبُهُ فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى عَلِمَ أَنَّهُ لَا مَحِيصَ لَهُ وَ أَنَّهُ لَا يَكُفُّ عَنْهُ فَخَرَجَ ع وَ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع سَبْعُ سِنِينَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ الْمَأْمُونُ لَا تَأْخُذْ عَلَى طَرِيقِ الْجَبَلِ وَ قُم

لَمَّا خَرَجَ الْمَأْمُونُ مِنْ خُرَاسَانَ يُرِيدُ بَغْدَادَ وَ خَرَجَ الْفَضْلُ ذُو الرِّئَاسَتَيْنِ وَ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع وَرَدَ عَلَى الْفَضْلِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ ذِي الرِّئَاسَتَيْنِ كِتَابٌ مِنْ أَخِيهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ وَ نَحْنُ فِي بَعْضِ الْمَنَازِلِ إِنِّي نَظَرْتُ فِي تَحْوِيلِ السَّنَةِ فِي حِسَابِ النُّجُومِ فَوَجَدْتُ فِيهِ أَنَّكَ تَذُوقُ فِي شَهْرِ كَذَا وَ كَذَا- يَوْمَ الْأَرْبِعَاءِ حَرّ

“When al-Ma’mun left Khurasan for Baghdad along with him came Fadl, Dhu al-Al-Ri’asatayn and we came out with abu al-Hassan (a.s.) لَمَّا أَرَادَ هَارُونُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع اذْهَبْ إِلَيْهِ وَ قُلْ لَهُ لَا تَخْرُجْ غَداً فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ خَرَجْتَ غَداً هُزِمْتَ وَ قُتِلَ أَصْحَابُكَ فَإِنْ سَأَلَكَ مِنْ أَيْنَ عَلِمْتَ هَذَا فَقُلْ رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَنَامِ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَا تَخْرُجْ غَداً فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ خَرَجْتَ هُزِمْتَ وَ قُتِلَ أَصْحَ

“When Harun ibn al-Musayyib decided to fight Muhammad ibn Ja‘far, abu al-Hassan (a.s.) told me to go to him and say, “Do not go our tomorrow. If would do so you will be defeated and your people will be killed.” If he would ask, “How do youknow that?” Say, “I saw it in my dream.” The narrator has said that he went to hi

أَنَّهُ حَمَلَ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع مَالًا لَهُ خَطَرٌ فَلَمْ أَرَهُ سُرَّ بِهِ قَالَ فَاغْتَمَمْتُ لِذَلِكَ وَ قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي قَدْ حَمَلْتُ هَذَا الْمَالَ وَ لَمْ يُسَرَّ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا غُلَامُ الطَّسْتَ وَ الْمَاءَ قَالَ فَقَعَدَ عَلَى كُرْسِيٍّ وَ قَالَ بِيَدِهِ وَ قَالَ لِلْغُلَامِ صُبَّ عَلَيَّ الْمَاءَ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يَسِيلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصَابِعِهِ فِي الطَّسْتِ ذَهَبٌ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ

“A Certain person of our people has said that he wanted to deliver an amount of propertyto al-Rida (a.s.). It was a large amount. When he saw it he did not become happy. I became depressed and said to myself, “I delivered this property to him but he did not become happy.” The Imam (a.s.) called, “O boy, bring water and

قُبِضَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى ع وَ هُوَ ابْنُ تِسْعٍ وَ أَرْبَعِينَ‌[1] سَنَةً وَ أَشْهُرٍ فِي عَامِ اثْنَيْنِ وَ مِائَتَيْنِ عَاشَ بَعْدَ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً إِلَّا شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً.

“Ali ibn Musa (a.s.) died at the age of forty nine and few months in the year two hundred and two AH. He lived for nineteen years and two or three month after the death of Musa ibn Ja‘far (a.s.).”
