سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَجْنَبَ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ لَمْ يَجِدْ إِلَّا الثَّلْجَ أَوْ مَاءً جَامِداً فَقَالَ هُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الضَّرُورَةِ يَتَيَمَّمُ وَ لَا أَرَى أَنْ يَعُودَ إِلَى هَذِهِ الْأَرْضِ الَّتِي تُوبِقُ دِينَهُ.
“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who experiences sexual relation during a journey and cannot find anything other than snow or ice. He (the Imam) said, ’This is like an emergency case and he must take Tayammum. I do not consider it proper for him to return to such land which ruins his religion.’”
