Eating and drinking in Gold and Silver Utensils

لَا تَأْكُلْ فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْفِضَّةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not eat from the utensils of gold and silver.

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع عَنْ آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْفِضَّةِ فَكَرِهَهُمَا فَقُلْتُ قَدْ رَوَى بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع مِرْآةٌ مُلَبَّسَةٌ فِضَّةً فَقَالَ لَا وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ إِنَّمَا كَانَتْ لَهَا حَلْقَةٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَ هِيَ عِنْدِي ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الْعَبَّاسَ حِينَ عُذِرَ[1] عُمِلَ لَهُ قَضِيبٌ مُلَبَّسٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ مِنْ نَحْوِ مَا يُعْمَلُ لِلصِّبْيَانِ تَكُونُ ف

‘When al- ‘Abbas was circumcised a stick with a silver covering was made for him like things that are made for children. It had about ten dirham of silver and abu al-Hassan, commanded to break it.’”

لَا تَأْكُلْ فِي آنِيَةٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَ لَا فِي آنِيَةٍ مُفَضَّضَةٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not eat from the utensils of silver or that which is silver-coated.’”

‌ أَنَّهُ نَهَى عَنْ آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْفِضَّةِ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), prohibited the use of utensils of gold and silver.’”

أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الشُّرْبَ فِي الْفِضَّةِ وَ فِي الْقَدَحِ الْمُفَضَّضِ وَ كَذَلِكَ أَنْ يُدَّهَنَ فِي مُدْهُنٍ مُفَضَّضٍ وَ الْمُشْطُ كَذَلِكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), disliked drinking from silver and silver-coated utensils as well as silver coated containers of perfumes and combs.’”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَدْ أُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِيهِ ضَبَّةٌ[2] مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِعُهَا بِأَسْنَانِهِ.

“I saw abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a bowl of water was brought to him (the Imam) in which there was a patch of silver, removing it with his teeth.’”

آنِيَةُ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْفِضَّةِ مَتَاعُ‌ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ‌.

“Abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s.), has said, ‘Utensils of gold and silver are of the assets of those who do not have certainty (in the laws of Allah).”’
