The Child of Adam is Hollow; thus He must Eat Food

سَأَلَهُ الْأَبْرَشُ الْكَلْبِيُّ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الْأَرْضُ‌ غَيْرَ الْأَرْضِ‌[1] قَالَ تُبَدَّلُ خُبْزَةً نَقِيَّةً يَأْكُلُ النَّاسُ مِنْهَا حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنَ الْحِسَابِ قَالَ الْأَبْرَشُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَفِي شُغُلٍ عَنِ الْأَكْلِ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع هُمْ فِي النَّارِ لَا يَشْتَغِلُونَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الضَّرِيعِ وَ شُرْبِ الْحَمِيمِ وَ هُمْ فِي الْعَذَابِ

“Al-Abrash al-Kalbiy once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘On the day when the earth will be replaced with another earth.’ (14:48) He (the Imam) said, ‘It means that there will be purified bread for people to eat until Allah will clear the accounts.’ Al-Ab

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خَلَقَ ابْنَ آدَمَ أَجْوَفَ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has created the child of Adam hollow.’”

إِنَّمَا بُنِيَ الْجَسَدُ عَلَى الْخُبْزِ.

‘The body is made out of bread (food).”’

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الْأَرْضُ‌ غَيْرَ الْأَرْضِ‌ قَالَ تُبَدَّلُ خُبْزَةً نَقِيَّةً يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا النَّاسُ حَتَّى يَفْرُغُوا مِنَ الْحِسَابِ فَقَالَ لَهُ قَائِلٌ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي شُغُلٍ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ الْأَكْلِ وَ الشُّرْبِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خَلَقَ ابْنَ آدَمَ أَجْوَفَ وَ لَا بُدَّ لَهُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَ الشَّرَابِ أَ هُمْ أَشَدُّ شُغُل

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘On the day when the earth will be replaced with another earth.’ (14:48) He (the Imam) said, ‘It will be replaced with purified bread from which people will eat until their accounting is complete.’ Someone then said

فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حِكَايَةً عَنْ مُوسَى ع- رَبِّ إِنِّي لِما أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ[2] فَقَالَ سَأَلَ الطَّعَامَ.

“About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, quoting Musa (a.s.), ‘My Lord, I am in great need of the good things You have sent to me...’ (27:24) Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘He (Moses) asked for food.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي الْخُبْزِ وَ لَا تُفَرِّقْ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ فَلَوْ لَا الْخُبْزُ مَا صُمْنَا وَ لَا صَلَّيْنَا وَ لَا أَدَّيْنَا فَرَائِضَ رَبِّنَا عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘O Lord, grant us blessings in bread and do not separate it from us. If bread had not been available, we could not fast or perform Salat (prayer) or fulfill any of our obligation toward our

إِنَّمَا بُنِيَ الْجَسَدُ عَلَى الْخُبْزِ.

‘The body is built on bread only.’”
