Women’s Performing Salah (Prayer) for a Dead Person

1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from woman of al-Hassan al-Sayqal from al-Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about women’s performing Salah (prayer) for deceased people if there is no man present among them. He (the Imam) said, ‘They all line up and no one of them stands up in front of others.’”

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the day of greater al-Hajj. He (the Imam) replied, That is the day of offering sacrifice and minor al-Hajj is al-‘Umrah.’”

1. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad from ibn Faddal from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one agrees to pay mahr (dower) then decides not to pay it, he is like a thief.’”

Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn abu Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shimr from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If no man is present, a woman leads (standing) in the middle with other women on her right and left, she in the middle says Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) until Salah (prayer) is complete.’”

2. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd af-Jabbar from Safwan from Dharih who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the greater al-Hajj is the day of offering sacrifice.”

2. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ah from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one marries a woman and then decides in his soul not to pay her mahr (dower), he has committed fornication.’”

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al-Kindiy from al-Mithamiy from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman experiencing Hayd (menses), if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line; instead stand alone.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Khalaf ibn Hammad from ibn Rib’iy ibn ‘Abd Allah from al-Fudayl ibn Yasar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man marries a woman and does not tell his soul to pay her mahr (dower) it is fornication.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who experiences Hayd (menses) if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line of the others.’”

5. Hammad has narrated from Hariz from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Woman experiencing Hayd (menses) can also perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased; there is no Ruku‘, and Sajdah. One experiencing sexual relation can take Tayammum and performs Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”
