A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from abu Hamza who has said the following: “I heard abu Ja’far (a.s.) saying, ‘There is nothing greater in rewards than testifying to the truth and believing in the meaning of the testimony of belief in Allah: ‘No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah’, Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, Who has no equal and no one shares Him in any issue. ’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Harun ibn al-Jahm from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When women migrated toward the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, among them there was a woman called ‘Umm Habib and she circumcised girls. When the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, saw her, he asked, ‘O ‘Umm Habib, do you still do the work you did or have you stopped?’ She replied, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I still practice unless it is unlawful and you prohibit. He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘No, I do not prohibit. It is lawful. Come closer to me so I can teach you.’ She has said, ‘I went closer to him and he said, “O ‘Umm Habib, when you circumcise, you must not make a large cut from the root. You must only do it like a sniff (a little scrape) because it brightens the face and is enjoyable for the husband.’” ‘Umm Habib had a sister called ‘Umm ‘Atiyyah. She was a hairdresser. When ‘Umm Habib returned to her sister and informed her about what the Messenger of Allah had said ‘Umm ‘Atiyyah then came to the Messenger of Allah and told him about what her sister had told to her. The Messenger of Allah of said, ‘Come closer to me, O ‘Umm ‘Attiyah, when you work on the hairs of a girl you must not wash her face with rags; it absorbs the water of the face (affects the beauty of the face).”’

It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from al-Fudayl ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab from Ishaq ibn ‘Abd Allah from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn al-Walid al- Wassafi in a marfu ’ manner who has said the following: ‘‘The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever (sincerely) says, ‘No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah’, a tree is planted for him in paradise, from red ruby that grows out of white musk, sweeter than honey, whiter than snow, of a fragrance better than musk, in which there is something like the breast of virgins, protruding from behind seventy dresses.’ ‘‘The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The best worship is the words: ‘No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah.’ ‘‘He also has said, ‘The best worship is pleading before Allah for forgiveness, due to the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, in His book: ‘(you must) know that no one deserves to be worshipped except Allah. Ask forgiveness for your sins. .. .’”(47:19)

If so I will stop.’ He said, ’You can still do it but when doing a hair dressing do not clean the face with al-Khiraq (tatter); it takes away the beauty of the face, and do not connect someone else’s hair to another person’s hair.’”

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from ibn Sama‘ah from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from Muhammad ibn Hakim who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a woman who is young and other women like her experience Hayd (menses). She is divorced: then her Hayd stops. How long is her waiting period? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is three months.’ I then asked that she has claimed to be pregnant after three months. He (the Imam) said, ‘Her waiting period is nine months.’ I then said that after nine months she has claimed to be pregnant. He (the Imam) said, ‘Pregnancy is for nine months.’ I then asked, ‘Can she marry?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘She must observe precaution for three months.’ I then said that after three months she has claimed. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no doubt about her, so she can marry if she wants.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Salim ibn Mukram from Sa‘d al-Iskaf who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about women’s decorating their hairs with silk fibers or hairs and so on. He (the Imam) replied, ‘There is no offense in women’s beautifying themselves for their husbands.’ I (the narrator) said, ‘We are told that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, had condemned (hairs) connecting and connected women. He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not apply in this case. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, had condemned only the connectors who commit fornication when they are young and when old lead men and women to commit fornication. This is called connecting and connected.’”

Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Aban ibn Hakim who has said the following: “About the case of a woman who is divorced and she claims to be pregnant; so she waits for one year, abu Ibrahim or his father (a.s.), has said, ‘If she comes up with such claim after a year it is not accepted even if it is one hour more.’”

She would circumcise girls. The Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, called her and said to her, ‘O ‘Umm Taybah, when you circumcise girls do not allow it to become excessive. It clears the color of the face and is more enjoyable for the husband.’”

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from ibn Sama‘ah and Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Muhammad ibn Hakim who has said the following: “I once asked the virtuous servant (a.s.), about the case of a woman who is young and women like her experience Hayd (menses). Her husband divorces her and her Hayd stops. How long is her waiting period? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is three months.’ I then said that she after three months became married and after going with her husband it was found that she is pregnant. He (the Imam) said, ‘This cannot happen, O ibn Hakim. Stoppage of Hayd is because of two reasons; it is because of disorder in Hayd in which case husbands were lawful for her, but she was not pregnant or that she is pregnant in which case it becomes apparent in three months because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has set a time for it in which time pregnancy becomes apparent.’ I then asked, ‘What happens if she has doubts?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Her ‘Iddah (waiting period) is nine months.’ I then said that she after nine months has doubts. He (the Imam) said, ‘Pregnancy is for nine months only.’ I then asked if she could marry. He (the Imam) said, ‘She must observe precaution for three months.’ I then said that she has doubts after three months.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no doubt in her case, so she can marry if she wants.’”

Instead he is executed against his wishes and I do not think that his execution can remedy his sin.’”

He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘If the child had grown bones and flesh then the wergild is due on her which she must pay to the father; but if the miscarriage takes place when the fetus has just formed or is an embryo she owes forty dinars or a slave to the father.’ I then asked, ‘Is it the case that she cannot inherit with the father?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘She cannot inherit because she has killed the child, so she cannot inherit.’”

Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from certain persons of his people from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from Fudayl ibn Yasar who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A man is not executed because of killing his son but a son is executed because of killing his father; and a man cannot inherit from his father after killing him even if it is by mistake.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one kills his father, he is executed for him; but if his father kills him the father is not executed for his son’s murder, however he cannot inherit from him.’” [Note: The next few passages of the Arabic text are the words of Fadl ibn Shadhan and are not translated.]
