Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “This is about the words of Allah, the most Majestic and Glorious, ‘Those who can afford pay ransom by feeding a destitute.’ (2:184) Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is a reference to the old man who becomes thirsty. The words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “So those who cannot afford to feed sixty destitute persons,” (58:5) is a reference to those who suffer from an illness or thirst.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa’id from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the legal status of the income from female music playing singers. He (the Imam) said, ’Such singing and playing music of females where men are also present is unlawful. There is no offense in inviting female singers on the occasion of a wedding program. It is in the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “Among people are those who purchase useless talk to make people lose the path of Allah.” (31:6)”’

Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘We inherit from them but they cannot inherit from us because al-Islam has not increased anything in his favor except sternness.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘They pay a ransom of one mud (a certain measurement) of wheat for every day.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from abu al-Sabbah al- Kinaniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man divorces his pregnant wife he must pay for her maintenance until childbirth. When she gives birth, he must pay her wages without causing any harm to her, unless he finds someone who breastfeeds for less. If she also agrees for less then she has the priority to have her son until weaning.’”

3. Ali has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “A pregnant divorcee must receive her maintenance until childbirth, and she has the priority to breastfeed the child for wages equal to what another woman asks. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘A mother must not be harmed because of her child or the father because of the child and the heirs also bear such responsibility.’ (2:232) He (the Imam) said, ‘A woman (from us) would raise her hand before her husband, when he wanted to go to bed with her, and say, ‘I do not want to allow you because I fear of becoming pregnant with my child.’ The man would say, ‘I do not want to go to bed with you for my fear of suspending you, thus killing my child.’ Allah prohibited a woman’s harming a man or a man’s harming a woman’ and His words ‘. . . the heirs also bear the same responsibility’ is a prohibition against harming the child or his mother in breastfeeding. She must not charge for breastfeeding for more than two complete years. If they with mutual agreement wean the child before such time, it is fine.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far (a.s.), say, ‘An old man and one who suffers from thirst have permission not to fast in the month of Ramadan, and instead each one pays a ransom of one mud of food for every day, and thereafter they are not obligated for any Qada’ (compensatory fast). If they cannot afford, they are not obligated for anything.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan al-Rida’ (a.s.), was asked about the legal status of purchasing a female singer. He (the Imam) said, ‘Sometimes a slave-girl of a man makes him go astray. What is then paid for such a slave-girl is like payment to purchase a dog. Payment for a dog is Suht (unlawful and filthy) and Suht is in the fire.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il from Ibrahim ibn abu al-Balad who has said the following: “Ishaq ibn ‘Umar made a will about his singer slave-girls at the time when he was about to die that said, ‘They must be sold and funds from their sale delivered to abu al-Hassan (a.s.). Ibrahim has said, ‘I sold the slave-girls for three hundred thousand dirham and took it to him (the Imam) and said, ‘One of your followers, called Ishaq ibn ‘Umar has made a will at the time he was about to die to sell his singer slave-girls and take the funds from their sale to you. I have sold them and this is the three hundred thousand dirham from the sale. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not need them. It is Suht (filthy), teaching them is disbelief, listening to them is hypocrisy and funds from their sale are Suht (filthy) unlawful.’”
