قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ يَرْوُونَ أَنَّ أَرْوَاحَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي حَوَاصِلِ طُيُورٍ خُضْرٍ حَوْلَ الْعَرْشِ‌ فَقَالَ لَا الْمُؤْمِنُ أَكْرَمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ رُوحَهُ فِي حَوْصَلَةِ طَيْرٍ وَ لَكِنْ فِي أَبْدَانٍ كَأَبْدَانِهِمْ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from abu Walfad al-Hannat who has said the following: “I asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), ’May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, they narrate that the souls of the believing people are kept in the craw of green birds that live around the Throne.’ The Imam replied, ‘Believing people are very much respectable before Allah. He does not keep them in the craw of birds. In fact, He keeps them in bodies like their bodies.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘ Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy (previous) (a.s.), that I have married a woman and found out that she had breastfed me and had breastfed her sister. He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) asked, ‘How much had she done so? 5 I replied, ‘It was a little.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘May Allah make it a blessing for you.’”

2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Najran from Muthanna al-Hannat from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The souls of the believing people are in a tree of paradise. They eat and drink of fruits and water thereof, and say, “O Lord, make the Day of Judgment to come for us, make what You had promised to come true and allow the last of us to join our first.’””

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from more than one person from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “About the case of a man who married the sister of his brother of breastfeeding, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘I do not like one’s marriage to the sister of his brother of breastfeeding.’”

إِنَّ الْأَرْوَاحَ فِي صِفَةِ الْأَجْسَادِ فِي شَجَرَةٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ تَعَارَفُ وَ تَسَاءَلُ فَإِذَا قَدِمَتِ الرُّوحُ عَلَى الْأَرْوَاحِ يَقُولُ دَعُوهَا فَإِنَّهَا قَدْ أَفْلَتَتْ مِنْ هَوْلٍ عَظِيمٍ ثُمَّ يَسْأَلُونَهَا مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ وَ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ فَإِنْ قَالَتْ لَهُمْ تَرَكْتُهُ حَيّاً ارْتَجَوْهُ وَ إِنْ قَالَتْ لَهُمْ قَدْ هَلَكَ قَالُوا قَدْ هَوَى هَوَى‌.

3. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from ’Isma‘il ibn Mehran from Durust ibn abu Mansur from ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the souls (spirits) with the quality of body are in a tree in paradise where they get to know each other and ask questions. Whenever a new coming soul (spirit) joins them, they say, ‘Leave him alone. He has just experienced a huge terrifying experience.’ Then they ask him, ‘What is so and so and so and so doing?’ If he says, ‘I left him in his lifetime,’ they wish the best for him; but if he says, ‘He died’, they say, ‘He then has fallen into the deep (hell).”’

3. Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan ibn Yahya who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before Allah’s virtuous servant (a.s.), about the case of my mother who has breastfed a girl along with me. He (the Imam) said, ‘She is your sister of breastfeeding.’ I then asked if she is lawful for my brother from my mother’s side whom she has not breastfed with his milk, that is not from this pregnancy but from another pregnancy. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is the ‘impregnating agent’ (husband) one?’ I replied, ‘Yes, she is my sister from my parents.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Because of the milk of “impregnating agent” your father has become her father and your mother her mother.’”

He said, ‘They are in chambers in paradise, they eat and drink thereof and say, “O Lord, make it the Day of Judgment, allow what You had promised us to come true and join the last of us with those who were first.’””

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man marries a small girl and she is breastfed by his wife his marriage becomes invalid.’ I then asked about the case of woman of a man who breastfeeds a girl; if her sons from another husband can marry her (the girl). He (the Imam) said, ‘No, they cannot do so.’ I then asked, ‘Is she like a sister of breastfeeding?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, from the side of the father.’”

5. Ali has narrated from his father from Muhsin ibn Ahmad from Muhammad ibn Hammad from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when a dying person dies, other spirits gather around him and ask, ‘Who is still alive and who is dead?’ If someone is dead and has not joined them they say, ‘He then has fallen into the deep.’ Others among them say, ‘Leave him alone so he can gain comfort from what he has experienced from death.’”

5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to ’Amir al-Mu’minin, and said, ‘O ’Amir al-Mu’minin, my wife drained her milk in a bowl and made my slave-girl to drink it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Make your woman suffer (judicially applicable punishment) and keep your slave- girl’. This is how it is in the judgment of Ali (a.s.).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Khalid from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Ahmad from Yunus ibn Zabyan who has said the following: ’Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked, ‘What do people say about the spirits of the believers?’ I then replied, ‘They say that they live in the craws of green birds in chandlers in paradise under the Throne.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘Allah is free of all defects. A believer is highly respected in the sight of Allah. He does not place them (the spirits of believers) in the craws of birds. O Yunus, when that (death) comes Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, al- Hassan and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and the angels of high ranks before Allah come. When Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, causes him to die, the spirit is transferred to a form like his form in the world. They (spirits) eat and drink. When a new coming soul (spirit) joins them, they recognize him through his form which he had in the world.’”

Muhammad ibn Ahmad has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from his brother al-Hassan from Zur‘ah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once, I said to abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘We speak about the spirits of the believing people that they live in the craws of green birds that graze in paradise and seek shelter in chandlers under the Throne.’ He said, ‘No, they certainly are not in the craws of birds.’ I then asked, ‘Where are they then?’ He replied, ‘They are in a garden in the shape of bodies in paradise.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from abu Yahya al-Hannat who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), that my son and the daughter of my brother are in my care and I want to arrange marriage between them but certain ones of my family has said that she has breastfed both of them. He (the Imam) asked, ’How much breastfeeding has taken place?’ I replied, ’I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ’Inform me so then I determine.’ He (the narrator) has said, that I then said, ’I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can arrange marriage between them.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from abu ‘Ubaydah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘You must not marry a woman as a second wife, the first being her paternal aunt, maternal aunt of breastfeeding or her sister of breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said that Ali ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that daughter of Hamzah was mentioned before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “Do you not know that she is daughter of my brother of breastfeeding?” The Messenger of Allah and his uncle Hamzah were breastfed by one woman.’”

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad from Ali ibn Mahziyar from who has said the following: “Once abu Ja‘far (a.s.), was asked about the case of a man who married a small girl, then his wife breastfed her, then his other woman breastfed her. Ibn Shubramah has said that the girl and both of his wives become unlawful for him. Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Ibn Shubramah has made a mistake. The girl and his wife who first breastfed her become unlawful but his other wife is not unlawful because her case is like her breastfeeding her own daughter.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Sinan from a man who has said the following: “This is concerning a question before abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, when I was present, about the case of a woman who has breastfed her own slave boy from her milk until weaning; if she can sell him. He (the narrator) has said, that he (the Imam) said, ‘No, because he is her son of breastfeeding. Selling him and consuming his price is unlawful for her.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Has the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, not said, “Whoever is unlawful for marriage because of lineage is unlawful because breastfeeding.’””
