1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Haytham ibn abu Masruq from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Marwan ibn Muslim from ’Abd Allah ibn Hilal ibn Khaqan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘One who refuses to receive Zakat, when it is obligatory on him to receive is like one who refuses to pay Zakat when it is obligatory on him to pay.”

1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One who washes his hand before and after food, lives a rich life and remains safe from troubles in his body.”’

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Abd al-‘Azim ibn ‘Abd Allah al-‘Alaviy from al- Husayn ibn Ali from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One who refuses to receive Zakat, when it is obligatory on him to receive is like one who refuses to pay Zakat when it is obligatory up on him to pay.’”

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Safwan al-Jammal from abu Hamzah al-Thumaliy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said, ‘O abu Hamzah, Wudu (washing) before and after eating food removes poverty.’ I then said, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, does it remove poverty?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it removes poverty.’”

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ‘Asem from Humayd from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man of our people who is a deserving beneficiary of Zakat but feels shy to accept Zakat. Can I pay him Zakat without mentioning that it is Zakat?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Pay him and do not mention and you must not humiliate the believer.”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather Hisham ibn Salim ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Washing hands before and after eating food removes stains from clothes and clears eyesight.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع الرَّجُلُ يَكُونُ مُحْتَاجاً فَيُبْعَثُ إِلَيْهِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ فَلَا يَقْبَلُهَا عَلَى وَجْهِ الصَّدَقَةِ يَأْخُذُهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ذِمَامٌ وَ اسْتِحْيَاءٌ وَ انْقِبَاضٌ أَ فَيُعْطِيهَا إِيَّاهُ عَلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ الْوَجْهِ وَ هِيَ مِنَّا صَدَقَةٌ فَقَالَ لَا إِذَا كَانَتْ زَكَاةً فَلَهُ أَنْ يَقْبَلَهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْبَلْهَا عَلَى وَجْهِ الزَّكَاةِ فَلَا تُعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ وَ مَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يَسْتَحْيِيَ مِمَّا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِنَّمَا هِيَ فَرِيضَةُ اللَّهِ لَهُ فَلَا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهَا.

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz, from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man who is needy and I send him charity (Zakat) but he does not accept as charity (Zakat); it causes him to be protective, shy and depressed. Can I give without the aspect of charity (Zakat) when it is charity (Zakat) from us?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is Zakat he must accept it and if he does not accept it with the aspect of Zakat, then do not give it to him. It is not proper for him to be shy about what Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made obligatory. It is only obligatory from Allah for him and he must not feel shy about it.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from abu ‘ Awf al-Bajaliy who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘Wudu before and after eating food increases one’s sustenance.’ It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Wudu before eating food removes poverty and that which is after food removes depression.’”
