1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’During the day drinking water when standing gives the body more power and good health.’”

كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَاعِداً فِي حَلْقَةِ رَبِيعَةِ الرَّأْيِ فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَسَأَلَ رَبِيعَةَ الرَّأْيِ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ فَأَجَابَهُ فَلَمَّا سَكَتَ قَالَ لَهُ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ أَ هُوَ فِي عُنُقِكَ فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ رَبِيعَةُ وَ لَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئاً فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَسْأَلَةَ فَأَجَابَهُ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ أَ هُوَ فِي عُنُقِكَ فَسَكَتَ رَبِيعَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع هُوَ فِي عُنُقِهِ قَالَ أَوْ لَمْ يَقُلْ وَ كُلُّ مُفْتٍ ضَامِنٌ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘ Abd al- Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has narrated the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was in the group of the circle of Rabi‘ah al-Ra’y when an Arab man came and asked Rabi‘ah al-Ra’iy a question and he replied. When he became quiet the Arab man asked, ‘Do you take responsibility for your answer?’ He remained quiet and did not respond. He repeated the question and he gave a similar answer and the Arab man asked, ‘Do you take the responsibility? But Rabi‘ah al-Ra’y remained quiet. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said to him that it is his responsibility. He said, ‘Has He not said that everyone who issues a Fatwa is responsible for it?”’

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn abu Mahmud in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘During the day drinking water when standing makes the food more pleasant; but drinking water during the night when standing causes al-Safra ’ (yellowness, acidity).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from abu ‘Ubaydah who has narrated the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one issues fatwas without knowledge and guidance from Allah, all angels, of mercy and angels of suffering condemn him and the sin of those who follow his fatwas will be attached to him.’”

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then asked, ‘Can I perform Sajdah (prostration) with my hand in my pocket?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘I, by Allah, am not afraid for you of this and similar things (as long as your belief is proper).”’

5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from his grandfather from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Mughirah from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ibn al-‘Arzamiy from Hatim ibn ’Isma‘il al-Madiniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin once drank water standing. He then drank the water left from his wudu standing; then he turned to Al-Husayn (a.s.), and said, ‘Son, I saw your grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, doing as I just did.’”

9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from an old man from the people of al- Madinah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who drinks water in one breath until he is satisfied. He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘Is the pleasure of taste anything but that?’ I then said, ‘People say that it is the thirsty camel’s way of drinking.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. The thirsty camel’s way of drinking is when the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is not mentioned.’”
