الْبَاغِي الَّذِي يَخْرُجُ عَلَى الْإِمَامِ وَ الْعَادِي الَّذِي يَقْطَعُ الطَّرِيقَ لَا تَحِلُّ لَهُ الْمَيْتَةُ.

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the words of Allah, most Blessed, most High, ‘Those who are compelled without being rebels or transgressors . . (2:172) He (the Imam) said, ‘A rebel is one who rises against the Imam and a transgressor is one who cuts off the road and dead animals are not lawful for him.”’

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ الطِّينُ حَرَامٌ كُلُّهُ كَلَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ ثُمَّ مَاتَ فِيهِ لَمْ أُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا طِينَ الْقَبْرِ[2] فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ لِشَهْوَةٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ.

’Eating clay is unlawful in its entirety, like the flesh of pork. If one eats it and dies, I will not perform Salat (prayer) for him except the clay from the grave (of al-Husayn (a.s.) ) in which there is cure for all kinds of illnesses but if one eats it because of strong desire, then there is no cure in it.’”

“About the case of a man who ate clay ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), prohibited and said, ‘Do not eat clay; if you eat clay and die, you have helped to murder yourself.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الطِّينِ فَقَالَ أَكْلُ الطِّينِ حَرَامٌ مِثْلُ الْمَيْتَةِ وَ الدَّمِ وَ لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ إِلَّا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع‌[3] فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمْناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ.

It is unlawful like dead animals, blood, flesh of pigs except the clay from the grave of al-Husayn (a.s.), in which there is cure for all kinds of illness and security from all kinds of fear.”’

‘When al- ‘Abbas was circumcised a stick with a silver covering was made for him like things that are made for children. It had about ten dirham of silver and abu al-Hassan, commanded to break it.’”

كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِالْحِيرَةِ حِينَ قَدِمَ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْمَنْصُورِ فَخَتَنَ بَعْضُ الْقُوَّادِ ابْناً لَهُ وَ صَنَعَ طَعَاماً وَ دَعَا النَّاسَ وَ كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِيمَنْ دُعِيَ فَبَيْنَا هُوَ عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ يَأْكُلُ وَ مَعَهُ عِدَّةٌ عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَاسْتَسْقَى رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ مَاءً فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ فِيهِ شَرَابٌ لَهُمْ فَلَمَّا أَنْ صَارَ الْقَدَحُ فِي يَدِ الرَّجُل

Food was prepared and people were invited. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was one of the people invited. When he was on the table to have food from a group of people near by, a man asked for water but a bowl of wine was brought for him. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ كانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ الْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلَا يَأْكُلُ عَلَى مَائِدَةٍ يُشْرَبُ عَلَيْهَا الْخَمْرُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment, must not eat at a table where wine exists.’”

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once in one of his speeches said, ‘After me there will come a year when the believing person will eat (an amount needed) for one stomach and the unbelievers will eat (as if needed) for seven stomachs.

قَالَ لِي يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّ الْبَطْنَ لَيَطْغَى مِنْ أَكْلِهِ وَ أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنَ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَ عَزَّ إِذَا خَفَّ بَطْنُهُ وَ أَبْغَضُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِذَا امْتَلَأَ بَطْنُهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad, the stomach becomes excessive in its eating. A servant is nearest to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, when his stomach is empty and light. The most hated condition of a servant to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is when his stomach is full.’”

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates overeating.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Children of Adam must eat to keep their backs straight. When one of you eats keep one-third of your stomach for food one-third for water and one-third for breathing and never become fat like pigs

إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى طَعَامٍ فَلَا يَسْتَتْبِعَنَّ وَلَدَهُ فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ فَعَلَ أَكَلَ حَرَاماً وَ دَخَلَ غَاصِباً[1].

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When one of you is invited for food do not allow your children to follow you, because in doing so he eats unlawfully and enters (the house of host) as a usurper.’”

كَانَ عَبَّادٌ الْبَصْرِيُّ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَأْكُلُ فَوَضَعَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَدَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَ مَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص نَهَى عَنْ هَذَا فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَأَكَلَ ثُمَّ أَعَادَهَا أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَيْضاً فَرَفَعَهَا ثُمَّ أَكَلَ فَأَعَادَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا نَهَى

“‘Abbad al-Basriy was once with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), while eating, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), placed his hand on the ground. ‘Abbad said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well. “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would eat like a slave and sit like one. The Messenger of Allah would eat while sitting on the ground and sleep on the ground.’”

“Once Bashir al-Dahhan asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when I was present, saying, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah eat while leaning against something to his right or left?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah never ate while leaning against something on his right or left, he (the Messenger of Allah) however, sat like

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَا أَكَلَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ص وَ هُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ مُنْذُ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَشَبَّهَ بِالْمُلُوكِ وَ نَحْنُ لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَفْعَلَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet never ate while leaning against something, from the time Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent him as His Messenger. He (the Messenger of Allah) disliked sitting as kings, but we are not able to do so.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ إِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ فَلْيَجْلِسْ جِلْسَةَ الْعَبْدِ وَ لَا يَضَعَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى وَ لَا يَتَرَبَّعْ فَإِنَّهَا جِلْسَةٌ يُبْغِضُهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ يَمْقُتُ صَاحِبَهَا.

‘When one of you sits for food, he must sit like slaves and must not place one leg over the other or sit in a cross-legged manner; it is the kind of sitting for which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates and abhors one who sits in such manner.’”

مَا عَذَّبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَوْماً قَطُّ وَ هُمْ يَأْكُلُونَ وَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَكْرَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَرْزُقَهُمْ شَيْئاً ثُمَّ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَفْرُغُوا مِنْهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has never made a people to undergo suffering while eating food. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is honorable. He does not give people sustenance, then make them to undergo suffering before they finish eating their food.’”
