Chapter on the Virtue of Fasting

بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسَةِ أَشْيَاءَ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَ الزَّكَاةِ وَ الْحَجِّ وَ الصَّوْمِ وَ الْوَلَايَةِ[1]

Hadith.1770 - Abu Ja’far (Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as)) said: "Islam is built upon five things: prayer, almsgiving, pilgrimage, fasting, and wilayah (divinely appointed leadership)."

وَ قَالَ ص‌ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى الصَّوْمُ لِي وَ أَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ‌[2] وَ لِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ حِينَ يُفْطِرُ وَ حِينَ يَلْقَى رَبَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌[3] وَ الَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَخُلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ‌[4] عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَطْيَبُ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ.

لِأَصْحَابِهِ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَبَاعَدَ الشَّيْطَانُ عَنْكُمْ كَمَا تَبَاعَدَ الْمَشْرِقُ مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ الصَّوْمُ يُسَوِّدُ وَجْهَهُ وَ الصَّدَقَةُ تَكْسِرُ ظَهْرَهُ وَ الْحُبُّ فِي اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ الْمُؤَازَرَةُ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ الصَّالِحِ يَقْطَعُ دَابِرَهُ وَ الِاسْتِغْفَارُ يَقْطَعُ وَتِينَهُ[5] وَ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ زَكَاةٌ

لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِأَصْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَ فَرْعِهِ وَ ذِرْوَتِهِ وَ سَنَامِهِ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ أَصْلُهُ الصَّلَاةُ وَ فَرْعُهُ الزَّكَاةُ وَ ذِرْوَتُهُ وَ سَنَامُهُ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِأَبْوَابِ الْخَيْرِ الصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ مِنَ النَّارِ[6]

Hadith.1775 - Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) said to Ali ibn Abdul Aziz: "Shall I not inform you about the foundation of Islam, its branch, its pinnacle, and its peak?" He said: "Yes." وَ قَالَ ع‌ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَ الصَّلاةِ قَالَ يَعْنِي بِالصَّبْرِ الصَّوْمَ.

Hadith.1776 - Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) said regarding the saying of Allah (swt), the Almighty: "And seek help through patience and prayer" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45): (Imam (as) said) "By patience, it means fasting."

وَ قَالَ ع‌ إِذَا نَزَلَتْ بِالرَّجُلِ النَّازِلَةُ أَوِ الشِّدَّةُ[1] فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- وَ اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَ الصَّلاةِ

Hadith.1777 - Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) said: "If a person faces a calamity or hardship, let him fast, for Allah (swt), the Almighty, says: "And seek help through patience and prayer" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45)

وَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى وَكَّلَ مَلَائِكَةً بِالدُّعَاءِ لِلصَّائِمِينَ وَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي جَبْرَئِيلُ ع عَنْ رَبِّهِ تَعَالَى ذِكْرُهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَا أَمَرْتُ مَلَائِكَتِي بِالدُّعَاءِ لِأَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِي إِلَّا اسْتَجَبْتُ لَهُمْ فِيهِ.

وَ قَالَ ع‌ مَنْ صَامَ لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَوْماً فِي شِدَّةِ الْحَرِّ فَأَصَابَهُ ظَمَأٌ وَكَّلَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ يَمْسَحُونَ وَجْهَهُ وَ يُبَشِّرُونَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا أَفْطَرَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَا أَطْيَبَ رِيحَكَ وَ رَوْحَكَ يَا مَلَائِكَتِي اشْهَدُوا أَنِّي قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لَهُ.
