3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘How much Zakat is on vegetables. He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is it?’ I replied, ‘Edible herbs, melons and similar things of legumes.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due on it unless it is sold in exchange for another kind of wealth and it remains with him for one year; then there is charity on it.’ I then asked if there is Zakat on fresh plum and similar things. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Zakat is not due on it.’ I then asked if there is Zakat on what is received from the sale of such items. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it remains with one for one year, then there is Zakat on it.’”
