بَابُ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ وَ الشُّرْبِ فِي نَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ:

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’During the day drinking water when standing gives the body more power and good health.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْمُودٍ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ:

شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِالنَّهَارِ يُمْرِئُ الطَّعَامَ وَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِاللَّيْلِ يُورِثُ الْمَاءَ الْأَصْفَرَ.

2. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn abu Mahmud in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘During the day drinking water when standing makes the food more pleasant; but drinking water during the night when standing causes al-Safra ’ (yellowness, acidity).”’

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ:

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim [from abu Hashim] ibn Yahya al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin went to the water container and drank water standing.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ:

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ.

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then asked, ‘Can I perform Sajdah (prostration) with my hand in my pocket?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘I, by Allah, am not afraid for you of this and similar things (as long as your belief is proper).”’

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ.

5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from his grandfather from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Mughirah from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ الْعَرْزَمِيِّ عَنْ حَاتِمِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَدِينِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع كَانَ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ يَشْرَبُ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهِ قَائِماً ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَقَالَ

6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ibn al-‘Arzamiy from Hatim ibn ’Isma‘il al-Madiniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin once drank water standing. He then drank the water left from his wudu standing; then he turned to Al-Husayn (a.s.), and said, ‘Son, I saw your grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, doing as I just did.’”

7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking water in three breaths is better than in one breath.’”

8. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from Mu‘alfa’ ibn ‘Uthman from Mu’alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the folio wing: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking water in three breaths is better than in one breath/”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ‌ الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ:

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَلَا يَقْطَعُ نَفَسَهُ حَتَّى يَرْوَى قَالَ فَقَالَ ع وَ هَلِ اللَّذَّةُ إِلَّا ذَاكَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ‌ قَالَ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا إِنَّمَا شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ مَا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ.

9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from an old man from the people of al- Madinah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who drinks water in one breath until he is satisfied. He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘Is the pleasure of taste anything but that?’ I then said, ‘People say that it is the thirsty camel’s way of drinking.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. The thirsty camel’s way of drinking is when the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is not mentioned.’”
