لَيْسَ الْغَيْرَةُ إِلَّا لِلرِّجَالِ وَ أَمَّا النِّسَاءُ فَإِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ مِنْهُنَّ حَسَدٌ وَ الْغَيْرَةُ لِلرِّجَالِ وَ لِذَلِكَ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ إِلَّا زَوْجَهَا وَ أَحَلَّ لِلرِّجَالِ أَرْبَعاً وَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَكْرَمُ أَنْ يَبْتَلِيَهُنَّ بِالْغَيْرَةِ وَ يُحِلَّ لِلرِّجَالِ مَعَهَا ثَلَاثاً

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Pride is with men only and with women it is jealousy. Vanity is with men and for this reason Allah has prohibited women except to have one husband and for men He has made up to four (wives) lawful. Allah is most gracious. He does not place vanity and pride in them (women) then make three more with her lawful for him/”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع أَحَلَّ مِنْ عُمْرَتِهِ وَ أَخَذَ مِنْ أَطْرَافِ شَعْرِهِ كُلِّهِ عَلَى الْمُشْطِ ثُمَّ أَشَارَ إِلَى شَارِبِهِ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ الْحَجَّامُ ثُمَّ أَشَارَ إِلَى أَطْرَافِ لِحْيَتِهِ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ.

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma‘il who has said the following: “I saw abu al-Hassan (a.s.), come out of the state of Ihram of al-‘Umrah. He (the Imam) had taken from the side of his hairs all around by the help of a comb. He (the Imam) then pointed to his mustache and the barber took a certain amount from them. He (the Imam) then pointed to his beard and the barber took a certain amount from it. He (the Imam) then stood up.”

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمْ يَجْعَلِ الْغَيْرَةَ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَ إِنَّمَا تَغَارُ الْمُنْكِرَاتُ مِنْهُنَّ فَأَمَّا الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ فَلَا إِنَّمَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الْغَيْرَةَ لِلرِّجَالِ لِأَنَّهُ أَحَلَّ لِلرَّجُلِ أَرْبَعاً وَ مَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ وَ لَمْ يَجْعَلْ لِلْمَرْأَةِ إِلَّا زَوْجَهَا فَإِذَا أَرَادَتْ مَعَهُ غَيْرَهُ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ زَانِيَةً. قَالَ وَ- رَوَاهُ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَإِنْ بَغَتْ مَعَهُ غَيْرَهُ.

2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from Sa‘d al-Jallab who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not placed pride in women. Such feeling comes from detested ones among them; however, the believing ones of them are free of pride. Allah has placed pride in men; He has made lawful for men up to four and those whom they own (slaves). For women He has made only their husband so if she wants more besides him she is a fornicator before Allah.’ He (the narrator) has said that al-Qasim ibn Yahya has narrated from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), except that he has said, ‘Baghat’ (sought) instead of ‘Aradat’ (wanted).”

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Rifa‘ah ibn Musa who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Tawaf around the House and Sa‘y between al-Safa’ and al-Marwah; if he can perform an optional Tawaf before Taqsir (cutting some hair or finger nails and so on). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not admirable to me.’”

بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَاعِدٌ إِذْ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ عُرْيَانَةٌ حَتَّى قَامَتْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي فَجَرْتُ فَطَهِّرْنِي قَالَ وَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ يَعْدُو فِي أَثَرِهَا وَ أَلْقَى عَلَيْهَا ثَوْباً فَقَالَ مَا هِيَ مِنْكَ فَقَالَ صَاحِبَتِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ خَلَوْتُ بِجَارِيَتِي فَصَنَعَتْ مَا تَرَى فَقَالَ ضُمَّهَا إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الْغَيْرَاءَ لَا تُبْصِرُ أَعْلَى الْوَادِي مِنْ أَسْفَلِهِ.

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj in a marfu’ manner has said the following: “Once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was sitting that a nude woman came until she stood right in front of him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have sinned, so cleanse me.’ He (the narrator) has said that after her a man came running and threw a cloth on her. He (the Messenger of Allah) asked about the relation between the two of them.’ He replied, ‘She is my companion (wife), O Messenger of Allah. I went to bed with my slave-girl, and then she did what you have seen.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) then said, ‘The egotistic, or jealous cannot distinguish between the top and the bottom of the valley.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from Yusuf ibn Hammad from those whom he has mentioned from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Pride of women is jealousy and jealousy is the root of disbelief. When women become jealous they become angry and when they become angry they disbelieve except the Muslim ones among them.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-FIusayn ibn Aslam who has said the following: “When abu Ja‘far, ibn al-Rida’ (a.s.), wanted to do Taqsir (cutting some hair or finger nails and so on) after al-‘Umrah, the barber wanted to take from the sides of his head but he (the Imam) said, ‘Take from the side of the forehead and the barber did accordingly.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Khalid al-Qalanisiy who has said the following: “Once a man mentioned his wife before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he praised her quite well. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), asked, ‘Have you made her jealous?’ He replied, ‘No, I have not done so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Make her feel jealous.’ He did so and he found the proof; then said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that he has found the proof and she is as he (the Imam) has said.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr and Safwan ibn Yahya from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who is for al-Hajj al-Tamattu‘ (advantageous) cuts his nails and takes certain amount of the hairs from his head with a blade. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful, everyone cannot not find scissors.’”

6. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘When a woman feels jealous against man, she causes disappointment for him.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because of (her) love/”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj and Flafs ibn al-Bakhtariy and other than these two who has said the following: “About a man who performs Taqsir (cutting some hair or finger nails and so on) of certain parts but not of other parts, he (the Imam) said, ‘It is sufficient for him.”
