Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), came out for Salat (prayer) and certain ones of his children had a gown of yellow al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) with ribbon work of yellow al- Khazz.’”

Al-Husayn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘ Abd Allah al-Rahman ibn abu ‘ Abd Allah who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one takes an oath about something when doing it is better than not doing it, he must do what is better and there is no expiation on him, it is only of the temptations of Satan.”’

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore a gown of al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) valued at fifty dinar and al-Khazz ribbon work of fifty dinar.’”

3. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “I, once, was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a man asked him (the Imam) about al- Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). He (the Imam) said, ‘Its use is not unlawful.’ He then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, in our land they are dogs that come out of the water.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘When they come out of the water do they then live on land?’ The man replied, ‘No, they do not live on land.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Its use is not unlawful.’”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from Sa‘id al-A‘raj who has narrated the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who vows to do a certain thing then finds out that not doing it is better. If he disregards it, he is afraid of committing a sin. Can he disregard it? He (the Imam) said, ‘Have you not heard the words of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, “If you find something better than that for which you have taken an oath, then you can disregard it.’””

4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), saying, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al- Salam, in winter would wear al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) decorated on both sides and a hat of al-Khazz for winter, then sell them in the summer and give its value in charity.’ He (the Imam) then read, ‘Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has brought out for His servants and the very fine kinds of means of sustenance. (7:31)’”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Is ibn al-Qasim from abu Dawud, Yusuf ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and I was wearing a gown of al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) with its lining of al-Khazz, a Taylisan (pallium) of al-Khazz of very fine texture. I then said, ‘I am wearing a kind of clothing which I do not like.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Why is that so?’ I replied, ‘It is this Taylisan.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is the matter with it?’ I replied, ‘It is of al-Khazz.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is wrong with al-Khazz?’ I then said, ‘Its warp is of abrisam (silk from silk worm).’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is wrong with abrisam? It is not detestable if its warp is of abrisam, or its buttons or its emblems. Only all abrisam is detestable for men, and not for women.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al-Khazz that we wear.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, that is fur.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If its fur is lawful so also is its skin.’”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that when al-Husayn (a.s.), was murdered, he wore a dark color Jubbah (gown) of al-Khazz (garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). They found thirty-three torn spots in it because of being hit with swords, spears or arrows.’”

10. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Hafs ibn ‘Umar (‘Amr) abu Muhammad Mu’adhdhin Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “I saw abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), performing Salat (prayer) in al-Rawdah and wore a jubbah (gown) of al-Khazz (garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) of the color of quince.’”
