Substances from which Wine is Made

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْخَمْرُ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ الْعَصِيرُ مِنَ الْكَرْمِ وَ النَّقِيعُ مِنَ الزَّبِيبِ وَ الْبِتْعُ مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَ الْمِزْرُ مِنَ الشَّعِيرِ[2] وَ النَّبِيذُ مِنَ التَّمْرِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Intoxicating liquors are made from five kinds of substances: grape juice, extracts of raisins, al-Bit’ (mead) from honey, al-Mizru (beer) from barley an

الْخَمْرُ مِنْ خَمْسَةِ أَشْيَاءَ مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَ الزَّبِيبِ وَ الْحِنْطَةِ وَ الشَّعِيرِ وَ الْعَسَلِ. - مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ الْجَمَّالِ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ السِّمْطِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ.

‘Wine is made of five substances: it is made from grape juice, extracts of raisins, al-Bit ’ (mead) from honey, al-Mizru (beer) from barley and wine from dates.’”
