[٢]قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: ما لابن آدم و الفخر أوله نطفة و آخره جيفة، لا يرزق نفسه و لا يدفع حتفه. و في رواية اخرى عنه عليه السلام ما لابن آدم و الفخر و إنّما أوله نطفة مذرة و آخره جيفة قذرة و هو فيما بين ذلك يحمل العذرة؛ و نظم ذلك أبو محمّد الباقي فقال: \sُ عجبت من فاخر بنخوته\z و كان من قبل نطفة قذرة\z و في غد بعد حسن صورته\z يصير في القبر جيفة قذرة\z و هو على عجبه و نخوته\z ما بين جنبيه يحمل العذرة\z\E« شرح الصحيفة للسيّد على خان»
[٣]تكبر هذا الرجل و تفاخر بسمو النسب و علو الحسب فرد عليه النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه و آله بأنه و آباءه كلهم في النار و كان ذلك باعتبار أن آباءه كانوا أيضا موصوفين بوصف التكبر أو باعتبار أن كلهم كانوا كفّارا أو باعتبار أن هذا الرجل كان متكبرا و آباؤه كانوا كفّارا و هو الأظهر( لح).

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ الْأَسَدِيُّ وَ أَنَا فِي الْحَسَبِ الضَّخْمِ مِنْ قَوْمِي قَالَ فَقَالَ مَا تَمُنُّ عَلَيْنَا بِحَسَبِكَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفَعَ بِالْإِيمَانِ مَنْ كَانَ النَّاسُ يُسَمُّونَهُ وَضِيعاً إِذَا كَانَ مُؤْمِناً وَ وَضَعَ بِالْكُفْرِ مَنْ كَانَ النَّاسُ يُسَمُّونَهُ شَرِيفاً إِذَا كَانَ كَافِراً فَلَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ فَضْلٌ عَلَى أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِالتَّقْوَى[1].

Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn Isma’il from Hanan ibn ‘Uqbah ibn Bashir al-Asadi who has said the following: “Once, I said to abu Ja’far (a.s.) ‘I am ‘Uqbah ibn Bashir al-Asadi and among my people my lineage is very prominent.’ The narrator has said that the Imam then asked, ‘What is it that makes you oblige us because of your lineage? Due to proper belief, Allah has exalted those whom people consider low. Due to disbelief, He has made low those whom people called men of dignity. No one is superior, because of any other reason, to the others except due to piety.”’

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع عَجَباً لِلْمُخْتَالِ الْفَخُورِ وَ إِنَّمَا خُلِقَ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ جِيفَةً وَ هُوَ فِيمَا بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ لَا يَدْرِي مَا يُصْنَعُ بِهِ.
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Isa ibn al-Dahhak who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘It is astonishing how one acts boastfully and arrogantly, when it is a fact that he is created from sperm and he will soon turn into a carcass and, in between, he does not know what may happen to him.’”

أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ حَتَّى عَدَّ تِسْعَةً فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَمَا إِنَّكَ عَاشِرُهُمْ فِي النَّارِ.
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Once a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am so and so son of so and so counting (boastfully) up to nine generations.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘You are the tenth of them in the fire.’”

6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The misfortune for lineage is boastfulness.’”

فِيمَا نَاجَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ مُوسَى ع يَا مُوسَى لَا تُطَوِّلْ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَمَلَكَ فَيَقْسُوَ قَلْبُكَ وَ الْقَاسِي الْقَلْبِ مِنِّي بَعِيدٌ.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Ali ibn ‘Isa in a marfu’ manner has said the following: “It is in the conversations of Moses with Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘O Moses, do not prolong your hopes in the world; it hardens your heart and the hardhearted people are far away from Me.’”
