فِي الرَّجُلِ يَطَأُ عَلَى الْمَوْضِعِ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِنَظِيفٍ- ثُمَّ يَطَأُ بَعْدَهُ مَكَاناً نَظِيفاً قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ ذِرَاعاً أَوْ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ.

قَالَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِدَاكَ آبَاؤُنَا وَ أُمَّهَاتُنَا إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْمَعْرُوفِ فِي الدُّنْيَا عُرِفُوا بِمَعْرُوفِهِمْ فَبِمَ يُعْرَفُونَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى إِذَا أَدْخَلَ أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ أَمَرَ رِيحاً عَبِقَةً طَيِّبَةً فَلَزِقَتْ بِأَهْلِ الْمَعْرُوفِ فَلَا يَمُرُّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ بِمَلَإٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ إِلَّا وَجَدُوا رِيحَهُ فَقَالُوا هَذَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَعْرُوفِ.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Zakariya al-Mu’min from Dawud ibn Farqad or Qutaybah al-A‘sha’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has narrated this Hadith. ‘Once, companions of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, asked a question. “O Messenger of Allah, we pray to Allah to keep our souls and the souls of ancestors in service for your cause; if people who provide Benevolent Assistance are recognized because of such acts, by what means will they be recognized on the Day of Judgment?” He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, “When Allah, the most Blessed, the most High, will admit providers of Benevolent Assistance in Paradise, He will command a wind that carries a certain fragrance to accompany them. Whenever one of them passes by the people in Paradise, they notice the fragrance and say, ‘This is one of the providers of benevolent assistance.”””

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the case of a girl who is taken as captive from the pagan’s land then she becomes Muslim and she is asked for Khafd but we are not able against a woman. He (the Imam) said, ’Circumcision is for men and not for women.”’ (It a is reference to lowering or reducing female clitoris )

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from ibn Mahbub from ‘ Abd Allah ibn Sinan from ‘ Abd al- Rahman ibn Sayabah who has narrated the following: “A woman made a will to me that said, ‘With one-third of my legacy my debts must be paid and part of it will be for so and so female.’ I then asked ibn abu Layla’ about it and he said, ‘There is nothing for her because I do not know how much is al-Juz’ (a part).’ I then asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about it afterwards and informed him (the Imam) how she had said it and what ibn abu Layla’ had said. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ibn abu Layla’ has spoken falsely. She can have one-tenth of the one- third because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, said to Ibrahim ‘Alayhi al-Salam, “Place Juza’ (a part) of it on every mountain” (2:260) the mountains at that time were ten, thus al-Juz’ is one-tenth of something.’”

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Al-Hasan Mahboub, from Hilal Bin Atiyya, from Abu Hamza who said: Ali (asws) Bin Al-Husayn (asws), said, ‘He (asws) used to said that: ‘The most Beloved of you all to Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic is the one with the best deeds, and the greatest one of you in (the Sight of) Allah (azwj) is the one who has the greatest interest in what is with Allah (azwj), and that the safest one of you from the Punishment of Allah (azwj) is the one who is the most intense is his fear of Allah (azwj), and the nearest one of you to Allah (azwj) is the one who is the most moral one, and the one of you with whom Allah (azwj) is most Pleased with is the one who bestows the most upon his family, and the most prestigious one of you to Allah (azwj) is the one who is the most pious one to Allah (azwj)’.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father, from Hammad, from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Once I was in the company of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), and on passing (stepping on) some dried up human feces, certain pieces came in contact with his clothes. I informed him about it and he (the Imam) asked, ‘Was it not dried up?’ I said, ‘Yes, it was dried up.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It (touching) then is not harmful. Certain parts of earth cleanse other parts.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy from certain individuals of our people in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that providers of Benevolent Assistance will be as such on the Day of Judgment also. They will receive the news, ‘Your sins are all forgiven. You may give away your good deeds as gifts to whomever you like.”’

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from abu Maryam from Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah (saww) has said, ‘If one is murdered over his stolen property he is a martyr.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘O Abu Maryam, do you know what is ‘murdered over his stolen property’? I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep me in the service of your cause, it is when a man is murdered defending his family, property and similar things.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is of fiqh (proper understanding) to know the truth.’”

3. Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from Muhammad al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once we found lodging in a place. Between this place and the Masjid there were dirty passageways. I visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) asked, ‘Where have you found lodging?’ I replied, ‘It is the house of so and so.’ He (the Imam) or we said, ‘Between that house and Masjid there are unclean passageways.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful, certain parts of earth cleanse other parts.’ I (the narrator) asked, ‘What happens if I step on wet dung?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Such things are not harmful.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from his father from those whom he has mentioned (in his book) from al-Rida (a.s.): “If a man is on a journey and with him is his slave-girl. Certain people come and want to take his slave-girl from him. Should he try to stop them even if he fears for losing his life?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, he should try.’ I then asked, ‘Is it so also if a woman is with him?’ He (the Imam) replies, ‘Yes, it is.’ I then asked, ‘Is it so also if it is his mother, daughter of uncle and relatives. Should he stop such people even if he fears for losing his life?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is so also.’ I then asked, ‘Is it so also if it is property which they want to take during one’s journey and must stop them even if he fears for his life?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, so also it is.’”

The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, called her and said, ‘O ’Umm Taybah, when you lower a woman make it (as little as) a scratch but do not be excessive. It clears the color and is more enjoyable to the husband.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn abu Nasr from Harun ibn al-Jahm from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when women migrated to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, among them was a woman called ‘Umm Habib who lowered girls. When the Messenger of Allah saw her, he (the Messenger of Allah) asked her, ‘O ‘Umm Habib, do you still do what you did before?’ She replied, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, unless it is unlawful and you prohibit me.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘No, I do not prohibit. Come closer to me so I can instruct you.’ She has said, ‘I then went closer to him (the Messenger of Allah) and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “O ‘Umm Habib, when you do it, do not be excessive to cut it from its root, only make it (the cut as little as) a scratch; it is more clearing for the face and enjoyable for the husband.’”
