عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبادَتِي‌ سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ داخِرِينَ‌ قَالَ هُوَ الدُّعَاءُ وَ أَفْضَلُ الْعِبَادَةِ الدُّعَاءُ قُلْتُ إِنَ‌ إِبْراهِيمَ لَأَوَّاهٌ‌ حَلِيمٌ‌ قَالَ الْأَوَّاهُ هُوَ الدَّعَّاءُ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurara from that Abu Ja’far (al-Baqir) (as) said: “Allah (azwj) has said: «Surely those who are too proud for My worship shall soon enter hell disgraced»(40:60). This is a reference to supplications, as the greatest act of worship is supplicating." I (Zurara) asked: "What is meant by: «Indeed, Ibrahim was very tender-hearted and forbearing» (9:114)." He said: "Tender-heartedness is (frequent) supplication."

Narrated to us certain persons of our people from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from abu Jamilah from Sa‘d ibn Tarif who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, passed by a man and asked, ’How is your wife doing?’ He said, ‘I have divorced her, O Messenger of Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Did you do it without her misbehaving?’ He replied, ‘Yes, it was without her misbehaving.’ He (the Imam) said that he married and the Holy Prophet, passed by and asked, ‘Have you got married?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I have married.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) afterward asked, ‘How is your wife?’ He replied, ‘I have divorced her.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Did you divorce her without her misbehaving?’ He replied, ‘Yes, it was without her misbehaving.’ The man then got married and the Holy Prophet, passed by and asked, ‘Have you got married?’ Afterward he (the Messenger of Allah) asked about his wife and he replied, ‘I divorced her.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Did you do without her misbehaving?’ He replied, ‘Yes, it was without her misbehaving.’ The Messenger of Allah then said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates or condemns every man who divorces hastily (like an epicure who keeps tasting this and that food) and every woman who is as such.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr from Husayn al-Raziy who has narrated the following: “I instructed a person to ask abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if the legacy is for the nearest relative or for al-‘Asabah (the relatives from the father’s side only). He (the Imam) said, ‘The legacy is for the nearest relatives and for the mouth of relatives from the father’s side only is dirt (soil).”’

دَخَلَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَرَأَى عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابَ بِيضٍ كَأَنَّهَا غِرْقِئُ الْبَيْضِ‌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنَّ هَذَا اللِّبَاسَ لَيْسَ مِنْ لِبَاسِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ اسْمَعْ مِنِّي وَ عِ مَا أَقُولُ لَكَ فَإِنَّهُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ عَاجِلًا وَ آجِلًا إِنْ أَنْتَ مِتَ‌ عَلَى السُّنَّةِ وَ الْحَقِّ وَ لَمْ تَمُتْ عَلَى بِدْعَةٍ أُخْبِرُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ فِي زَمَانٍ مُقْفِرٍ جَدْبٍ‌ فَأَمَّا إِذَا أَقْبَلَتِ الدُّنْيَا فَأَحَقُّ أَهْلِهَا بِهَا أَبْرَارُهَا لَا فُجَّارُهَا وَ مُؤْمِنُوهَا لَا مُنَافِقُوهَا وَ مُسْلِمُوهَا لَا كُفَّارُهَا فَمَا أَنْكَرْتَ يَا ثَوْرِيُّ فَوَ اللَّهِ إِنَّنِي لَمَعَ مَا تَرَى مَا أَتَى عَلَيَّ مُذْ عَقَلْتُ صَبَاحٌ وَ لَا مَسَاءٌ وَ لِلَّهِ فِي مَالِي حَقٌّ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَضَعَهُ مَوْضِعاً إِلَّا وَضَعْتُهُ قَالَ فَأَتَاهُ قَوْمٌ مِمَّنْ يُظْهِرُونَ الزُّهْدَ وَ يَدْعُونَ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا مَعَهُمْ عَلَى مِثْلِ الَّذِي هُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ التَّقَشُّفِ فَقَالُوا لَهُ إِنَّ صَاحِبَنَا حَصِرَ عَنْ كَلَامِكَ وَ لَمْ تَحْضُرْهُ حُجَجُهُ- فَقَالَ لَهُمْ فَهَاتُوا حُجَجَكُمْ فَقَالُوا لَهُ إِنَّ حُجَجَنَا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ فَأَدْلُوا بِهَا[1] فَإِنَّهَا أَحَقُّ مَا اتُّبِعَ وَ عُمِلَ بِهِ فَقَالُوا يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى مُخْبِراً عَنْ قَوْمٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ص- وَ يُؤْثِرُونَ عَلى‌ أَنْفُسِهِمْ‌ وَ لَوْ كانَ بِهِمْ خَصاصَةٌ وَ مَنْ يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ‌ فَأُولئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ‌[2] فَمَدَحَ فِعْلَهُمْ وَ قَالَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ وَ يُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعامَ عَلى‌ حُبِّهِ‌ مِسْكِيناً وَ يَتِيماً وَ أَسِيراً[3] فَنَحْنُ نَكْتَفِي بِهَذَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْجُلَسَاءِ إِنَّا رَأَيْنَاكُمْ تَزْهَدُونَ فِي الْأَطْعِمَةِ الطَّيِّبَةِ وَ مَعَ ذَلِكَ تَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْخُرُوجِ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَتَّى تَمَتَّعُوا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع دَعُوا عَنْكُمْ مَا لَا تَنْتَفِعُونَ بِهِ أَخْبِرُونِي أَيُّهَا النَّفَرُ أَ لَكُمْ عِلْمٌ بِنَاسِخِ الْقُرْآنِ مِنْ مَنْسُوخِهِ وَ مُحْكَمِهِ مِنْ مُتَشَابِهِهِ الَّذِي فِي مِثْلِهِ ضَلَّ مَنْ ضَلَّ وَ هَلَكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ فَقَالُوا لَهُ أَوْ بَعْضِهِ فَأَمَّا كُلُّهُ فَلَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ فَمِنْ هُنَا أُتِيتُمْ‌[4] وَ كَذَلِكَ أَحَادِيثُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص‌[5] فَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتُمْ مِنْ إِخْبَارِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِيَّانَا فِي كِتَابِهِ- عَنِ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ أَخْبَرَ عَنْهُمْ بِحُسْنِ فِعَالِهِمْ فَقَدْ كَانَ مُبَاحاً جَائِزاً[6] وَ لَمْ يَكُونُوا نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَ ثَوَابُهُمْ مِنْهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَ تَقَدَّسَ أَمَرَ بِخِلَافِ مَا عَمِلُوا بِهِ فَصَارَ أَمْرُهُ نَاسِخاً لِفِعْلِهِمْ وَ كَانَ نَهَى اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى رَحْمَةً مِنْهُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ نَظَراً لِكَيْلَا يُضِرُّوا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ وَ عِيَالاتِهِمْ مِنْهُمُ الضَّعَفَةُ الصِّغَارُ وَ الْوِلْدَانُ وَ الشَّيْخُ الْفَانِي وَ الْعَجُوزُ الْكَبِيرَةُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَصْبِرُونَ عَلَى الْجُوعِ فَإِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِرَغِيفِي وَ لَا رَغِيفَ لِي غَيْرُهُ ضَاعُوا وَ هَلَكُوا جُوعاً فَمِنْ ثَمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص خَمْسُ تَمَرَاتٍ أَوْ خَمْسُ قُرَصٍ أَوْ دَنَانِيرُ أَوْ دَرَاهِمُ يَمْلِكُهَا الْإِنْسَانُ وَ هُوَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُمْضِيَهَا فَأَفْضَلُهَا مَا أَنْفَقَهُ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَى وَالِدَيْهِ ثُمَّ الثَّانِيَةُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَ عِيَالِهِ ثُمَّ الثَّالِثَةُ عَلَى قَرَابَتِهِ الْفُقَرَاءِ ثُمَّ الرَّابِعَةُ عَلَى جِيرَانِهِ الْفُقَرَاءِ ثُمَّ الْخَامِسَةُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَ هُوَ أَخَسُّهَا أَجْراً-

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il and Ibn Mahbub, both narrating from Hanan ibn Sadir from his father who said: “Once I asked Abu Ja’far (al-Baqir) (as), ‘What is the best form of worship?’. He (as) said, ‘There is nothing more virtuous before Allah (azwj) than to ask and request Him for things.' There is no one more spiteful in the eyes of Allah (azwj) than one who seems himself as above the need to worship Him and does not ask Him.'"

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father, from ‘ Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from Isma‘il ibn abu Ziyad who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, has narrated from his ancestors, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, who have stated this Hadith. ‘Once, the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, asked his companions, ‘Should I tell you something which, if you do it, will keep Satan away from you as far as east and west?’ They replied, ‘Please do so.’ The Holy Prophet said, ‘Fasting turns Satan’s face black, charity breaks his back, love for the sake of Allah and supporting good deeds cuts off his tail (followers), and asking forgiveness cuts off his artery. Everything has a zakat (cleanser). Zakat of the bodies is fasting.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ah ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ah from ibn Mahbub from Hisham ibn Salim from Yazid al-Kunasiy who has narrated the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Your son is more deserving of you than your grandson, and your grandson is more deserving of you than your brother.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Your brother from your both parents is more deserving of you than your brother from your father only. Your brother from your father is more deserving of you than your brother from your mother only.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The son of your brother from your father is more deserving of you than your uncle.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Your uncle from your father’s father and mother is more deserving of you than your uncle from your grandfather only.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Your uncle who is a brother of your father from his father only is more deserving of you than your uncle who is a brother of your father from his mother only.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The son of your uncle who is a brother of your father from his both parents is more deserving of you than the son of your uncle who is a brother of your father from his mother only.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The son of your uncle who is a brother of your father from his father only is more deserving of you than the son of your uncle who is a brother of your father from his mother only.’”

Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Maysir ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) once said to me, ‘O Maysir, pray and do not say that it is predetermined and it is all over. There is a position with Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, that is not accessible without praying to Him. If a servant keeps his mouth closed and does not plead to receive help, he will not receive anything. O Maysir, there is no door that is knocked repeatedly but that sooner or later it will open up.’”

Should I tell you about the doors to goodness? Fasting certainly is a shield.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub who has said that ibn Bukayr informed me from Zurarah who has narrated the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying about the words of Allah, ‘. . .for everyone We have made Mawali (guardians, heirs) in what the parents and relatives leave behind,’ what is meant thereby are relatives in inheritance, not the benefactors who provide benefits. Thus the more deserving of a deceased is one who is nearest to him as a relative and womb, and the relationship which brings him toward it.’”

Ali ibn Muhammad and others have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa all from Ibn Mahbub from Hisham ibn Salim from Abu Hamza from Abu Ishaq al-Subay‘i from someone who narrated to him that he (the narrator) heard Amir al-Mu'minin (as) say, "O people! Know that the perfection of religion is seeking knowledge and acting by it. Surely seeking knowledge is more pertinent to you than seeking wealth. Wealth is apportioned and ensured to you. A just allocator divided it amongst you, has ensured it and will be faithful to that apportionment. [Whereas] knowledge is treasured with its people and you have been ordered to seek it from its people, so seek it."

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Pray and do not say that it (belief in predetermination) is already determined and the matter is settled; prayer is worshipping. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said, ‘Those who consider themselves above the need to worship Me will soon go to hell in disgrace,’ (40:60) ‘Pray to Me, I will accept your prayers (first part of the above verse).”’

A number of our people has narrated has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Barqi from Ya’qub ibn Yazid from Abu ‘Abdillah, one of our people narrated in a marfu‘ manner from Abu ‘Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as) that Rasulullah (sw) said: “Seeking knowledge is obligatory.” In another hadith, Abu 'Abdillah (as) narrated that Rasulullah (sw) said, “Seeking knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim. Let it be known that Allah loves those who seek knowledge.”

Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Abu Najran from Sayf al-Tammar that he heard Abu ‘Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as): "Cling to supplication, for you will not be able to draw as close [to Allah] by a means other than this. Do not neglect supplicating for the smallest of things due to its insignificance. Indeed, the one who is turned to for small matters, is also turned to for big matters."

[2]انما خص الصوم باللّه من بين سائر العبادات و بأنّه جاز به مع اشتراك الكل في ذلك لكونه خالصا له و جزاؤه من عنده خاصّة من غير مشاركة أحد فيه لكونه مستورا عن أعين الناس مصونا عن ثنائهم عليه.( فى) أقول: الصوم أمر بين الصائم و ربّه لا يطلع عليه أحد و سر بينه و بين معبوده بحيث لا يشرف عليه أحد غير اللّه سبحانه و ذلك لانه امر مستور بخلاف غيره من العبادات و إن كان هو الامساك عن المقطرات أما فرقه و التحرز عن المحرمات التي حرمها الشارع في جميع الأوقات مما لا ريب فيه و هو أن المنهيات انما حرمت لمضارها للإنسان و اما التحرز عن المباحات بل الاعمال التي ربما تستحب في غير أيّام الصوم لا يساوى الكف عن المحرمات لانه لا ضرر لها للإنسان قطعا، و انما الصوم هو غاية الخضوع للّه تعالى و المراقبة لاوامره و نواهيه و امتثال أمره و احترام قوانينه فقط و اما في ترك المحرم ربما لم يعمله الإنسان لاجل الضرر مسلم فيه أو لاجل سقوطه في اعين الناس و لومهم له لاحتمال وقوفهم عليه و ليس في الصوم من هذه الأمور شي‌ء. و سبب فرح الصائم عند الإفطار كما يأتي تحت رقم 15 لا شعار الصائم بان المولى وفّقه لغلبة هواه و أيضا بعدم تزلزله في اتيان ما كلف به و مجيئه مظفرا من تلك الجهاد و له فرح آخر عند لقاء جزاء عمله في اتيانه بما فرض اللّه له، و للصوم أيضا فوائد أخر تأتي في الاخبار الآتية.ص 63

Ali ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdallah has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn Abi Hamza that he heard Abu ‘Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as) say, "Acquire good understanding in religion because those of you who do not have good understanding in religion are like the Bedouins. Allah has said in His book, ‘Why do not some people from each group of believers seek to become specialists in religious learning and, after completing their studies, guide their group so that they will have fear of God. (9:122)’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa’Id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurara from his father from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, pleading before Allah for help is the form of worship about which Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said, ‘Those who consider themselves above the need to worship Me will soon go to hell in disgrace,’ (40:60) pray to Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, and do not say that things are already determined and settled (due to predestination).’ “Zurara has said, ‘The Imam thereby has meant that your belief in Allah’s decision and His measures should not stop you from praying to Allah and pleading before Him for help with seriousness and enthusiasm just as he (the Imam) has said.’”

Al-Hassan ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn al-Rabi‘ from Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar that he heard Abu ‘Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as) say, "It is necessary for you to have a good understanding of the religion of Allah. Do not be like the Bedouins, because those who do not gain a good understanding of the religion, Allah will not look at them on the Day of Judgement, and none of their deeds will be cleansed."

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Mundhir ibn Yazid from Yunus ibn Zabayan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one, for the sake of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, fasts on a very hot day, causing him to experience a great deal of thirst, Allah assigns a thousand angels for his safety who wipe his face until he discontinues his fast.’ Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, then says, ‘How fine is your fragrance and spirit! O My angels, bear witness that I have granted him forgiveness.’”

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from one who narrated to him that Abu ‘Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as) was asked, "May I be your ransom, there is a man who believes in this issue (i.e. the imamah of Ahlul-bayt), but locks himself at home and does not acquaint himself with his community.” So he said, “How will he achieve a good understanding of his religion [without talking to the knowledgable people of his community]?".

Ali has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from certain individuals of our people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, sent revelation to Moses, thereby asking him, ‘What keeps you from speaking to Me?’ Moses replied, ‘It is to keep away the bad breath of fasting in order to respect your glory.’ Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, then sent him revelation that said, ‘O Moses, bad breath of a fasting person is more beloved to Me than musk.’”
