أَتَى رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ هَذِهِ ابْنَةُ عَمِّي وَ امْرَأَتِي لَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا خَيْراً وَ قَدْ أَتَتْنِي بِوَلَدٍ شَدِيدِ السَّوَادِ مُنْتَشِرِ الْمَنْخِرَيْنِ جَعْدٍ قَطَطٍ أَفْطَسِ الْأَنْفِ لَا أَعْرِفُ شِبْهَهُ فِي أَخْوَالِي وَ لَا فِي أَجْدَادِي فَقَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ مَا تَقُولِينَ‌ قَالَتْ لَا[1] وَ الَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ نَبِيّاً مَا أَقْعَدْتُ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنِّي مُنْذُ م

23. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Nuh ibn Shu’ayb in a marfu’ manner from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Once a man from al-Ansar (people of al-Madinah) came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ وَ سُئِلَ عَنِ التَّزْوِيجِ فِي شَوَّالٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ص تَزَوَّجَ بِعَائِشَةَ فِي شَوَّالٍ وَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا كَرِهَ ذَلِكَ فِي شَوَّالٍ أَهْلُ الزَّمَنِ الْأَوَّلِ وَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الطَّاعُونَ كَانَ يَقَعُ فِيهِمْ فِي الْأَبْكَارِ وَ الْمُمْلَكَاتِ فَكَرِهُوهُ لِذَلِكَ لَا لِغَيْرِهِ.

جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ- يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي طَوْلٌ فَأَنْكِحَ النِّسَاءَ فَإِلَيْكَ أَشْكُو الْعُزُوبِيَّةَ فَقَالَ وَفِّرْ شَعْرَ جَسَدِكَ وَ أَدِمِ الصِّيَامَ فَفَعَلَ فَذَهَبَ مَا بِهِ مِنَ الشَّبَقِ.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from in a marfu’ manner the following: “Once a man came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not have the means to get married and I complain before you against

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا جَلَسَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ مَجْلِساً فَقَامَتْ عَنْهُ فَلَا يَجْلِسُ فِي مَجْلِسِهَا رَجُلٌ حَتَّى يَبْرُدَ قَالَ وَ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ص مَا زِينَةُ الْمَرْأَةِ لِلْأَعْمَى قَالَ الطِّيبُ وَ الْخِضَابُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ طِيبِ النَّسَمَةِ[1].

إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَ عُمَرَ أَتَيَا أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ فَقَالا لَهَا يَا أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ إِنَّكِ قَدْ كُنْتِ عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ قَبْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَكَيْفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مِنْ ذَاكِ فِي الْخَلْوَةِ فَقَالَتْ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا كَسَائِرِ الرِّجَالِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَا عَنْهَا وَ أَقْبَلَ النَّبِيُّ ص فَقَامَتْ إِلَيْهِ مُبَادِرَةً فَرَقاً[2] أَنْ يَنْزِلَ أَمْرٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ الْخَبَرَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once abu Bakr and ‘Umar went to ‘Umm Salamah and asked her, ‘O ‘Umm Salamah, you lived with another man before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ أَهْلَهُ فَلَا يُعَجِّلْهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘When one of you decides to go to bed with his wife he must not place her in a big rush.’”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع اخْتَضَبَ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ اخْتَضَبْتَ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّ التَّهْيِئَةَ مِمَّا يَزِيدُ فِي عِفَّةِ النِّسَاءِ وَ لَقَدْ تَرَكَ النِّسَاءُ الْعِفَّةَ بِتَرْكِ أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ التَّهْيِئَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَ يَسُرُّكَ أَنْ تَرَاهَا عَلَى مَا تَرَاكَ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا كُنْتَ عَلَى غَيْرِ تَهْيِئَةٍ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ فَهُوَ ذَاكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ التَّنَظُّفُ وَ التّ

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَ هُوَ فِي مَنْزِلِ حَفْصَةَ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ مُتَلَبِّسَةٌ مُتَمَشِّطَةٌ فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ لَا تَخْطُبُ الزَّوْجَ وَ أَنَا امْرَأَةٌ أَيِّمٌ لَا زَوْجَ لِي مُنْذُ دَهْرٍ وَ لَا وَلَدَ فَهَلْ لَكَ مِنْ حَاجَةٍ فَإِنْ تَكُ فَقَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ إِنْ قَبِلْتَنِي فَقَالَ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that once a woman of al-Ansar (people of al-Madinah) came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. She came in the house of Hafsah and she was well dressed and groomed. She came to the Messenger of Allah and sa

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّما أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ‌ أَتَزَوَّجُ فِيكُمْ وَ أُزَوِّجُكُمْ إِلَّا فَاطِمَةَ ع فَإِنَّ تَزْوِيجَهَا نَزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I am a human being like you. I marry from you and give in marriage to you except Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, because her marriage came from the heaven.’”

قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع يَا سَدِيرُ بَلَغَنِي عَنْ نِسَاءِ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ جَمَالٌ وَ حُسْنُ تَبَعُّلٍ فَابْتَغِ لِي امْرَأَةً ذَاتَ جَمَالٍ فِي مَوْضِعٍ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ أَصَبْتُهَا جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ- فُلَانَةَ بِنْتَ فُلَانِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فَقَالَ لِي يَا سَدِيرُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص لَعَنَ قَوْماً فَجَرَتِ اللَّعْنَةُ فِي أَعْقَابِهِمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ أَنَا أَكْرَهُ أَ

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.), once said to me, ‘O Sadir, I have heard about the beauty and good manners of the women of al-Kufah with their husbands. Can you find for me a woman with beauty in a place?’ I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I know one. She is daughter of so and so ibn Muhammad ib

سَمِعْتُ جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ ع يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ يَا عَلِيُّ مُرْ نِسَاءَكَ لَا يُصَلِّينَ عُطُلًا وَ لَوْ يُعَلِّقْنَ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِنَّ سَيْراً[1].

“I once heard Ja’far ibn Muhammad (a.s.), saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, ‘O Ali, instruct your women not to perform Salat (prayer) without having dressed well and not to use a necklace which is made of skin.’”

ذَكَرْتُ لَهُ الْمَجُوسَ وَ أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ نِكَاحٌ كَنِكَاحِ وُلْدِ آدَمَ وَ إِنَّهُمْ يُحَاجُّونَّا بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ أَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَلَا يُحَاجُّونَكُمْ بِهِ لَمَّا أَدْرَكَ هِبَةُ اللَّهِ قَالَ آدَمُ يَا رَبِّ زَوِّجْ هِبَةَ اللَّهِ فَأَهْبَطَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ حَوْرَاءَ فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ أَرْبَعَةَ غِلْمَةٍ ثُمَّ رَفَعَهَا اللَّهُ فَلَمَّا أَدْرَكَ وُلْدُ هِبَةِ اللَّهِ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ زَوِّجْ وُلْ

“I once mentioned to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), Zoroastrians and that they say, ‘A marriage like the marriage of the sons of Adam and that they argue with us about it. He (the Imam) said, ‘They cannot argue against you because of what Hibbahtu Allah found. Adam said, ‘O Lord, find marriage for Hibbahtu Allah.’ Allah, most Maje

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ قَوْلُ الرَّجُلِ لِلْمَرْأَةِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّكِ لَا يَذْهَبُ مِنْ قَلْبِهَا أَبَداً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The words of a man to a woman, ‘I love you’ never goes away from her heart.’”

كُلُّ زِنًى سِفَاحٌ وَ لَيْسَ كُلُّ سِفَاحٍ زِنًى لِأَنَّ مَعْنَى الزِّنَى فِعْلُ حَرَامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ جِهَةٍ لَيْسَ فِيهِ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنْ وُجُوهِ الْحَلَالِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ هَذَا الْفِعْلُ بِكُلِّيَّتِهِ حَرَاماً مِنْ كُلِّ وَجْهٍ كَانَتْ تِلْكَ الْعِلَّةُ رَأْسَ كُلِّ فَاحِشَةٍ وَ رَأْسَ كُلِّ حَرَامٍ حَرَّمَهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْفُرُوجِ كُلِّهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَ قَدْ يَكُونُ فِعْلُ الزِّنَى عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنَ الْعِبَادِ وَ أَج

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْوَلَدُ الصَّالِحُ رَيْحَانَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ قَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ عِبَادِهِ وَ إِنَّ رَيْحَانَتَيَّ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا- الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَمَّيْتُهُمَا بِاسْمِ سِبْطَيْنِ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ شَبَّراً وَ شَبِيراً[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A virtuous son is a sweet smelling flower from Allah which Allah distributes among His servants. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَكْثِرُوا الْوَلَدَ أُكَاثِرْ بِكُمُ الْأُمَمَ غَداً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You (my followers) should bring up more children because I will claim to have the majority with you among the nations tomorrow (on the Day of Judgment).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مِنْ سَعَادَةِ الرَّجُلِ الْوَلَدُ الصَّالِحُ.

the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Of good fortune and prosperity of a man is his having the virtuous son.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ الْوَلَدَ الصَّالِحَ رَيْحَانَةٌ مِنْ رَيَاحِينِ الْجَنَّةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A virtuous son is a sweet smelling flower from the flowers of paradise.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مِنْ سَعَادَةِ الرَّجُلِ الْوَلَدُ الصَّالِحُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘It is of the prosperity and good fortune of a man to have the virtuous son.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَرَّ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ ع بِقَبْرٍ يُعَذَّبُ صَاحِبُهُ ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِهِ مِنْ قَابِلٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَا يُعَذَّبُ فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ مَرَرْتُ بِهَذَا الْقَبْرِ عَامَ أَوَّلَ فَكَانَ يُعَذَّبُ وَ مَرَرْتُ بِهِ الْعَامَ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَيْسَ يُعَذَّبُ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ أَدْرَكَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ صَالِحٌ فَأَصْلَحَ طَرِيقاً وَ آوَى يَتِيماً فَلِهَذَا غَفَرْتُ لَهُ بِمَا فَعَلَ ابْنُهُ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said the following: ‘Jesus, son of Marry, once passed by a grave wherein its dweller suffered a great suffering. He passed by the same grave afterward but foun

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مِنْ نِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ أَنْ يُشْبِهَهُ وَلَدُهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ’It is of the bounties of Allah for a man to have a son who resembles him.’”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَبَا بَنَاتٍ.

“The Messenger of Allah (sw) was a father of daughters.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ نِعْمَ الْوَلَدُ الْبَنَاتُ مُلْطِفَاتٌ مُجَهِّزَاتٌ مُونِسَاتٌ مُبَارَكَاتٌ مُفَلِّيَاتٌ‌[2].

‘The best of children are daughters, who are kind, serving, comforting, blessed and nursing (their parents).”’

أُتِيَ رَجُلٌ وَ هُوَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ص فَأُخْبِرَ بِمَوْلُودٍ أَصَابَهُ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُ الرَّجُلِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ع مَا لَكَ فَقَالَ خَيْرٌ فَقَالَ قُلْ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ تَمْخَضُ فَأُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّهَا وَلَدَتْ جَارِيَةً فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ص الْأَرْضُ تُقِلُّهَا[3] وَ السَّمَاءُ تُظِلُّهَا- وَ اللَّهُ يَرْزُقُهَا وَ هِيَ رَيْحَانَةٌ تَشَمُّهَا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ مَ

“A man once was with the Holy Prophet (saww) and he informed him about the birth of a child but his face changed. The Holy Prophet asked him, ‘What is the matter with you?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Say that it is good.’ He then said, ‘I left and my wife was in labor. I am informed that she has given birth to

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى عَلَى الْإِنَاثِ أَرْأَفُ مِنْهُ عَلَى الذُّكُورِ وَ مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يُدْخِلُ فَرْحَةً عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَهَا حُرْمَةٌ إِلَّا فَرَّحَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.

"The Messenger of Allah (sw) said, 'Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, is more compassionate towards females than He is towards males. And no man brings joy to a woman with whom he has a relationship except that Allah will bring him joy on the Day of Resurrection.'"

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ وُلِدَ لَكَ ابْنَةٌ فَتُسْخِطُهَا وَ مَا عَلَيْكَ مِنْهَا رَيْحَانَةٌ تَشَمُّهَا وَ قَدْ كُفِيتَ رِزْقَهَا وَ قَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَبَا بَنَاتٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘I am told a girl is born to you whom you dislike. What has she brought upon you? She is a sweet smelling flower you enjoy and her sustenance is guaranteed, besides, the Messenger of Allah was a father of girls.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ عَالَ ثَلَاثَ بَنَاتٍ أَوْ ثَلَاثَ أَخَوَاتٍ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص وَ اثْنَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ وَ اثْنَتَيْنِ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ وَاحِدَةً فَقَالَ وَ وَاحِدَةً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (saww) has said, 'One who supports three daughters or three sisters, paradise becomes obligatory for him.’ It then was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what happens if one supports just two?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, ‘Even if they are just two.’ It t

وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا جَارِيَةٌ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَرَآهُ مُتَسَخِّطاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَ رَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى أَوْحَى إِلَيْكَ أَنْ أَخْتَارُ لَكَ أَوْ تَخْتَارُ لِنَفْسِكَ مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ تَخْتَارُ لِي قَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدِ اخْتَارَ لَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الْغُلَامَ الَّذِي‌ قَتَلَهُ الْعَال

"A man from our companions had a girl born to him, so he entered upon Abu Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) and saw him displeased. Abu Abdillah (as) said to him, 'What would you say if Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, inspired you to choose what He would choose for you or for yourself?' He replied, 'I would say, O Lord, choose fo

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ حَمْلٌ فَنَوَى أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ- مُحَمَّداً أَوْ عَلِيّاً وُلِدَ لَهُ غُلَامٌ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one’s wife is pregnant and he keeps in his intention to name him Muhammad or Ali, a boy will be born to him.’”

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْلُقَ النُّطْفَةَ[2] الَّتِي مِمَّا أَخَذَ عَلَيْهَا الْمِيثَاقَ فِي صُلْبِ آدَمَ أَوْ مَا يَبْدُو لَهُ فِيهِ‌[3] وَ يَجْعَلَهَا فِي الرَّحِمِ حَرَّكَ الرَّجُلَ لِلْجِمَاعِ وَ أَوْحَى إِلَى الرَّحِمِ‌[4] أَنِ افْتَحِي بَابَكِ حَتَّى يَلِجَ فِيكِ- خَلْقِي وَ قَضَائِيَ النَّافِذُ وَ قَدَرِي فَتَفْتَحُ الرَّحِمُ بَابَهَا فَتَصِلُ النُّطْفَةُ إِلَى الرَّحِمِ فَتَرَدَّدُ

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘When Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, wants to create the seed which has formed the covenant when taken from the back of Adam or what appears to Him, (due to al-Bada’ ) He places it in the womb and moves the man to go to bed with the woman (his wife). He inspires the womb to open its

أَصْدَقُ الْأَسْمَاءِ مَا سُمِّيَ بِالْعُبُودِيَّةِ وَ أَفْضَلُهَا أَسْمَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ.

The truest name is that which expresses one’s slavery to (Allah) and the best of them are names of the Prophets.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ سَمُّوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَدْرُوا أَ ذَكَرٌ أَمْ أُنْثَى فَسَمُّوهُمْ بِالْأَسْمَاءِ الَّتِي تَكُونُ لِلذَّكَرِ وَ الْأُنْثَى فَإِنَّ أَسْقَاطَكُمْ إِذَا لَقُوكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ لَمْ تُسَمُّوهُمْ يَقُولُ السِّقْطُ لِأَبِيهِ أَلَّا سَمَّيْتَنِي وَ قَدْ سَمَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مُحَسِّناً قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدَ[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘My father narrated to me from my grandfather that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Name your children before they are born: and if you do not know they are male or female, then name them with such names that are good for both male and female. In case a child is miscarried, when that child

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَمَا ذَا أُسَمِّيهِ قَالَ سَمِّهِ بِأَحَبِّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَيَّ حَمْزَةَ.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet (saww) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, a son is born to me, what should I name him?’ The Messenger of Allah repli

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ اسْتَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ فَإِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ إِلَى نُورِكَ وَ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ لَا نُورَ لَكَ.

‘You should give yourselves good names; on the Day of Judgment you will be called with your names: O so and so son of so and so, stand up to your light and stand up, O so and so son of so and so, you have no light.’”

هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ أُذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي التَّسْمِيَةِ بِهِ فَمَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي يس يَعْنِي التَّسْمِيَةَ وَ هُوَ اسْمُ النَّبِيِّ ص‌[5].

“Abu Ja‘far, or abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘This is ‘Muhammad’ (the Messenger of Allah) who has given them permission to name themselves with his name. However, who has given them permission to name themselves ‘Yasin’ which is the name of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad an

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص دَعَا بِصَحِيفَةٍ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْهَى‌ عَنْ أَسْمَاءٍ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا فَقُبِضَ وَ لَمْ يُسَمِّهَا مِنْهَا الْحَكَمُ وَ حَكِيمٌ وَ خَالِدٌ وَ مَالِكٌ وَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّهَا سِتَّةٌ أَوْ سَبْعَةٌ مِمَّا لَا يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا.

Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah asked for a sahifah (a book) and he (the Messenger of Allah) wanted to prohibit the use of certain names to use. He (the Messenger of Allah) passed away but he (the Messenger of Allah) did not mention them. Of such names are al- Hakam and Hakim, Khalid and Mal

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ص نَهَى عَنْ أَرْبَعِ كُنًى عَنْ أَبِي عِيسَى وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ وَ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ إِذَا كَانَ الِاسْمُ مُحَمَّداً.

that the Prophet (sw) prohibited using four epithets; Abu ‘Isa, Abu al-Hakam, Abu Malik, and Abu al-Qasim if the name is Muhammad.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لِيَكُنْ أَوَّلُ مَا تَأْكُلُ النُّفَسَاءُ الرُّطَبَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِمَرْيَمَ- وَ هُزِّي‌ إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُساقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَباً جَنِيًّا[1] قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَوَانُ‌[2] الرُّطَبِ قَالَ سَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَسَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ أَمْصَارِكُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ وَ

“The Messenger of Allah (s.w) has said, ‘The first thing that women should eat is fresh dates; Allah, most High, said to Maryam, ‘...shake the twig of the palm tree; fresh dates will fall on you to be picked up.’ (Quran 19:24) It then was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what happens if it is not the season of fresh dates

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَطْعِمُوا حَبَالاكُمُ اللُّبَانَ فَإِنَّ الصَّبِيَّ إِذَا غُذِّيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ بِاللُّبَانِ اشْتَدَّ قَلْبُهُ وَ زِيدَ فِي عَقْلِهِ فَإِنْ يَكُ ذَكَراً كَانَ شُجَاعاً وَ إِنْ وُلِدَتْ أُنْثَى عَظُمَتْ عَجِيزَتُهَا فَتَحْظَى بِذَلِكَ عِنْدَ زَوْجِهَا[1].

“The Messenger of Allah (s.w) has said, ‘Feed your women, during their pregnancy, frankincense; if a child receives frankincense for nourishment in the mother’s womb it strengthens the heart of the child and increases the reasoning power of the child. If the child is a male he grows up brave and if the child is female

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ حَنِّكُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِالتَّمْرِ هَكَذَا فَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ص بِالْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع.

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.) has said, ‘Feed your newborn children dates, because the Holy Prophet (sw) did so with al-Hassan and al-Husayn, peace be upon them both.”’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مَوْلُودٌ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ فِي أُذُنِهِ الْيُمْنَى بِأَذَانِ الصَّلَاةِ وَ لْيُقِمْ فِي الْيُسْرَى فَإِنَّهَا عِصْمَةٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ.

“The Messenger of Allah (sw) has said, ‘Whoever has a newborn child, let them recite the call to prayer (adhan) in their right ear, and let them recite the iqamah in their left (ear), for it serves as protection from the accursed Satan.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَجَاءَهُ رَسُولُ عَمِّهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَقُولُ لَكَ عَمُّكَ إِنَّا طَلَبْنَا الْعَقِيقَةَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهَا فَمَا تَرَى نَتَصَدَّقُ بِثَمَنِهَا فَقَالَ لَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ إِطْعَامَ الطَّعَامِ وَ إِرَاقَةَ الدِّمَاءِ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a messenger from his uncle came and said, ‘Your uncle says, “We tried to find ‘Aqiqah but could not find one. Do you think our giving its price in charity is sufficient?”’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Allah loves feeding of food and slaughtering animals (to feeding the needy).”’

إِذَا ذَبَحْتَ فَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ بِاللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ إِيمَاناً بِاللَّهِ وَ ثَنَاءً عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ الْعِصْمَةَ لِأَمْرِهِ وَ الشُّكْرَ لِرِزْقِهِ وَ الْمَعْرِفَةَ بِفَضْلِهِ عَلَيْنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ‌[2] فَإِنْ كَانَ ذَكَراً فَقُلِ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ وَهَبْتَ لَنَا ذَكَراً وَ أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا وَهَبْتَ- وَ مِنْكَ مَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَ كُلُّ مَا صَنَعْنَا فَتَقَبَّل

يُقَالُ عِنْدَ الْعَقِيقَةِ- اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَ لَكَ مَا وَهَبْتَ وَ أَنْتَ أَعْطَيْتَ اللَّهُمَّ فَتَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا عَلَى سُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ ص وَ نَسْتَعِيذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَ تُسَمِّي وَ تَذْبَحُ وَ تَقُولُ لَكَ سُفِكَتِ الدِّمَاءُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ‌ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* اللَّهُمَّ اخْسَأِ الشَّيْطَانَ الرَّجِيمَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said to say this when offering ‘Aqiqah, ‘0 Lord, it is from You and for You is what You have granted. O Lord, accept it from us on the Sunnah of Your prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. We seek refuge with Allah against Sata

عَقَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ع بِيَدِهِ وَ قَالَ‌ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ عَقِيقَةٌ[1] عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ عَظْمُهَا بِعَظْمِهِ وَ لَحْمُهَا بِلَحْمِهِ وَ دَمُهَا بِدَمِهِ وَ شَعْرُهَا بِشَعْرِهِ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا وِقَاءً لِمُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (saww) offered Aqiqah for al-Hasan with his own hands and said, 'In the name of Allah. It is an ‘Aqiqah for al-Hasan.' He (the Messenger of Allah) also said, “O Lord, its bones are for his bones, its flesh for his flesh, its blood for his blood and its hairs

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ عَقَّتْ فَاطِمَةُ عَنِ ابْنَيْهَا وَ حَلَقَتْ رُءُوسَهُمَا فِي الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ وَ تَصَدَّقَتْ بِوَزْنِ الشَّعْرِ وَرِقاً وَ قَالَ كَانَ نَاسٌ يُلَطِّخُونَ رَأْسَ الصَّبِيِّ فِي دَمِ الْعَقِيقَةِ وَ كَانَ أَبِي يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ شِرْكٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Fatimah (a.s.) offered ‘Aqiqah for her two sons, shaved their heads on the seventh day, and gave in charity equal to the weight of their hairs of leaf (silver or gold).’ He (the Imam) has said that 'people would stain the head of the child with the blood of the animal for ‘Aqiqah a

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَذْكُرُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ‌ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص عَقَّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ع بِكَبْشٍ وَ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع بِكَبْشٍ وَ أَعْطَى الْقَابِلَةَ شَيْئاً وَ حَلَقَ رُءُوسَهُمَا يَوْمَ سَابِعِهِمَا وَ وَزَنَ شَعْرَهُمَا فَتَصَدَّقَ بِوَزْنِهِ فِضَّةً قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يُؤْخَذُ الدَّمُ فَيُلَطَّخُ بِهِ رَأْسُ الصَّبِيِّ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ شِرْكٌ فَقُلْتُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ شِرْكٌ فَقَالَ لَوْ لَمْ يَكُن

“I once heard Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), narrating from his father that the Messenger of Allah (saww) offered ‘Aqiqah for al-Hassan (a.s.). It was a ram and one ram for al-Husayn (a.s.). He (the Messenger of Allah) gave something to al-Qabilah (the special nurse), shaved their heads on the seventh day, weighed their hairs

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ وَ الْحَلْقِ وَ التَّسْمِيَةِ بِأَيِّهَا يُبْدَأُ قَالَ يُصْنَعُ ذَلِكَ كُلُّهُ فِي سَاعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ يُحْلَقُ وَ يُذْبَحُ وَ يُسَمَّى ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ مَا صَنَعَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع لِوُلْدِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ يُوزَنُ الشَّعْرُ وَ يُتَصَدَّقُ بِوَزْنِهِ فِضَّةً.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the ‘Aqiqah, shaving, giving a name to the newborn and that which one should come first. He (the Imam) said, ‘All of it should be done in one hour, shaving, slaughtering the animal offered for ‘Aqiqah and naming the child.’ He (the Imam) then mentioned what Fatimah, ‘Alayha al

سَمَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص- حَسَناً وَ حُسَيْناً ع يَوْمَ سَابِعِهِمَا وَ عَقَّ عَنْهُمَا شَاةً شَاةً وَ بَعَثُوا بِرِجْلِ شَاةٍ إِلَى الْقَابِلَةِ وَ نَظَرُوا مَا غَيْرُهُ‌[2] فَأَكَلُوا مِنْهُ وَ أَهْدَوْا إِلَى الْجِيرَانِ وَ حَلَقَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع رُءُوسَهُمَا وَ تَصَدَّقَتْ بِوَزْنِ شَعْرِهِمَا فِضَّةً.
