Prophethood

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع عَنِ التَّهْنِئَةِ بِالْوَلَدِ مَتَى فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ قَالَ لَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ هَبَطَ جَبْرَئِيلُ‌ بِالتَّهْنِئَةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فِي الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ وَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ وَ يُكَنِّيَهُ وَ يَحْلِقَ رَأْسَهُ وَ يَعُقَّ عَنْهُ وَ يَثْقُبَ أُذُنَهُ وَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ حِينَ وُلِدَ الْحُسَيْنُ ع أَتَاهُ فِي الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ فَأَمَرَهُ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ

It was the birth of al-Hassan ibn Ali (a.s.). Jibril descended to congratulate the Holy Prophet (saww) on the seventh day and instructed to name him and give him a Kunyah, shave his head, offer ‘Aqiqah for him and pierce a hole in his ear. عَقَّ أَبُو طَالِبٍ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ وَ دَعَا آلَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالُوا مَا هَذِهِ فَقَالَ عَقِيقَةُ أَحْمَدَ قَالُوا لِأَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ سَمَّيْتَهُ أَحْمَدَ قَالَ سَمَّيْتُهُ أَحْمَدَ لِمَحْمَدَةِ أَهْلِ السَّمَاءِ وَ الْأَرْضِ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has narrated from his father who has said that abu Talib offered ‘Aqiqah for the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, on the seventh day and invited members of his family who asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘It is

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ طَهِّرُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ وَ أَطْهَرُ وَ أَسْرَعُ لِنَبَاتِ اللَّحْمِ وَ إِنَّ الْأَرْضَ تَنْجَسُ مِنْ بَوْلِ الْأَغْلَفِ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحاً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Cleanse (circumcise) your children on the seventh day of their birth; it is more clean and allows the flesh to grow quicker. قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ مَنْ قِبَلَنَا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع خَتَنَ نَفْسَهُ بِقَدُومٍ عَلَى دَنٍ‌[3] فَقَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ كَمَا يَقُولُونَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْأَنْبِيَاءَ ع كَانَتْ تَسْقُطُ عَنْهُمْ غُلْفَتُهُمْ مَعَ سُرَرِهِمْ فِي الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ ع مِنْ هَاجَرَ[4] عَيَّرَتْ سَارَةُ هَاجَرَ بِمَا

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘We are told that Ibrahim ‘Alayhi al-Salam circumcised with an adze on a base. He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah is free of all defects, it is not the way they say it is. They have lied against Ibrahim.’ I then asked, ‘How did it happen?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘In the case of the prophets,

مِنْ سُنَنِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ الِاسْتِنْجَاءُ وَ الْخِتَانُ.

‘Of the Sunnah of prophets is draining al-Istinja’ (one’s urine) and circumcision.’”

كَانَتِ امْرَأَةٌ يُقَالُ لَهَا أُمُّ طَيْبَةَ تَخْفِضُ الْجَوَارِيَ فَدَعَاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ لَهَا يَا أُمَّ طَيْبَةَ إِذَا أَنْتِ خَفَضْتِ امْرَأَةً فَأَشِمِّي وَ لَا تُجْحِفِي فَإِنَّهُ أَصْفَى لِلَّوْنِ وَ أَحْظَى عِنْدَ الْبَعْلِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that there was a woman called ‘Umm Taybah and she lowered girls. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, called her and said, ‘O ’Umm Taybah, when you lower a woman make it (as little as) a scratch but do not

لَمَّا هَاجَرْنَ النِّسَاءُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص هَاجَرَتْ فِيهِنَّ امْرَأَةٌ يُقَالُ لَهَا أُمُّ حَبِيبٍ وَ كَانَتْ خَافِضَةً تَخْفِضُ الْجَوَارِيَ فَلَمَّا رَآهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ لَهَا يَا أُمَّ حَبِيبٍ الْعَمَلُ الَّذِي كَانَ فِي يَدِكِ هُوَ فِي يَدِكِ الْيَوْمَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ حَرَاماً فَتَنْهَانِي عَنْهُ قَالَ لَا بَلْ حَلَالٌ فَادْنِي مِنِّي حَتَّى أُعَلِّمَكِ ق

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when women migrated to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, among them was a woman called ‘Umm Habib who lowered girls. When the Messenger of Allah saw her, he (the Messenger of Allah) asked her, ‘O ‘

كُنْتُ جَلِيساً لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَفَقَدَنِي أَيَّاماً ثُمَّ إِنِّي جِئْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لِي لَمْ أَرَكَ مُنْذُ أَيَّامٍ يَا أَبَا هَارُونَ فَقُلْتُ وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَقَالَ بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ فَمَا سَمَّيْتَهُ قُلْتُ سَمَّيْتُهُ مُحَمَّداً قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ بِخَدِّهِ نَحْوَ الْأَرْضِ وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ مُحَمَّدٌ مُحَمَّدٌ مُحَمَّدٌ حَتَّى كَادَ يَلْصَقُ خَدُّهُ بِالْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِنَ

“I would often sit with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), in al-Madinah and he (the Imam) found me absent for a few days. When I went to visit him (the Imam) he (the Imam) asked, ‘I have not seen you for many days, O abu Harun.’ I said that a boy is born to me. He (the Imam) said, ‘May Allah make him a blessing for you! What have

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يَعُقَّ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ‌[3] حَتَّى كَبِرَ وَ كَانَ غُلَاماً شَابّاً أَوْ رَجُلًا قَدْ بَلَغَ قَالَ إِذَا ضُحِّيَ عَنْهُ أَوْ ضَحَّى الْوَلَدُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ عَقِيقَتُهُ وَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْمَوْلُودُ مُرْتَهَنٌ بِعَقِيقَتِهِ فَكَّهُ أَبَوَاهُ أَوْ تَرَكَاهُ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about the case of a man who had not offered ‘Aqiqah for any of his children until they all grew up as young boys or grown up men. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he offers sacrifice for them or they themselves offer sacrifice it then is sufficient for ‘Aqiqah. He (the Imam) said that the Me

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ص بِصَبِيٍّ يَدْعُو لَهُ وَ لَهُ قَنَازِعُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَدْعُوَ لَهُ وَ أَمَرَ بِحَلْقِ رَأْسِهِ وَ أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِحَلْقِ شَعْرِ الْبَطْنِ.

’Once a child was brought to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, so that he (the Messenger of Allah) might pray for him but the child had Qanazi ‘ and he (the Messenger of Allah) refused to pray for him. He (the Messenger of Allah) instr

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ يُعْدِي وَ إِنَّ الْغُلَامَ يَنْزِعُ إِلَى اللَّبَنِ يَعْنِي إِلَى الظِّئْرِ فِي الرُّعُونَةِ وَ الْحُمْقِ.

“This is a narration of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) has said, ‘You must not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding; the milk spreads and the boy is drawn to the milk, that is,

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص يَقُولُ‌ لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ يَغْلِبُ الطِّبَاعَ وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ الْوَلَدَ يَشِبُّ عَلَيْهِ‌[4].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin would say, ‘Do not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding: milk overpowers natural manners. The Messenger of Allah has said, “Do not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding; with such milk the child grows up.’””

قَالَ‌[1] أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ عَلِّمُوا أَوْلَادَكُمُ السِّبَاحَةَ وَ الرِّمَايَةَ.

‘You should teach your children swimming and sharp shooting.’”

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا حَقُّ ابْنِي هَذَا قَالَ تُحْسِنُ اسْمَهُ وَ أَدَبَهُ وَ ضَعْهُ مَوْضِعاً حَسَناً.

“Abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the right of my son, this one ? 5 He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘You should give him a good n

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ وَالِدَيْنِ أَعَانَا وَلَدَهُمَا عَلَى بِرِّهِمَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘May Allah grant forgiveness to the parents who support their children in their kindness and virtuous deeds.’”

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِالنَّاسِ الظُّهْرَ فَخَفَّفَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأَخِيرَتَيْنِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ لَهُ النَّاسُ هَلْ حَدَثَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ حَدَثٌ قَالَ وَ مَا ذَاكَ قَالُوا خَفَّفْتَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأَخِيرَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَمَا سَمِعْتُمْ صُرَاخَ الصَّبِيِّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once performed Salat (prayer) of al-Zuhr with people and made the two last Rak’at light. When he (the Messenger of Allah) completed, people asked if something has

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ يَلْزَمُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ مِنَ الْعُقُوقِ لِوَلَدِهِمَا مَا يَلْزَمُ الْوَلَدَ لَهُمَا مِنْ عُقُوقِهِمَا.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘What parents’ declaring their children as disobedient entails for parents is exactly what children’s disobeying their parents entails for the children (both cases are extremely harmful ).’”

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا مَغْمُومٌ مَكْرُوبٌ فَقَالَ لِي يَا سَكُونِيُّ مِمَّا غَمُّكَ قُلْتُ وُلِدَتْ لِي ابْنَةٌ فَقَالَ يَا سَكُونِيُّ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ثِقْلُهَا وَ عَلَى اللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا تَعِيشُ فِي غَيْرِ أَجَلِكَ-[3] وَ تَأْكُلُ مِنْ غَيْرِ رِزْقِكَ فَسَرَّى وَ اللَّهِ عَنِّي‌[1] فَقَالَ لِي مَا سَمَّيْتَهَا قُلْتُ فَاطِمَةَ قَالَ آهِ آهِ‌[2] ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ فَقَالَ قَ

“I once went to visit Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), who found me sad and depressed. He (the Imam) then asked, ‘O Sakuni, what has made you so depressed?’ I replied, ‘Aminah (a daughter) is born to me.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Sakuni, the earth carries her weight and Allah grants her sustenance. She lives in a lifetime which is

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قَبَّلَ وَلَدَهُ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ حَسَنَةً وَ مَنْ فَرَّحَهُ فَرَّحَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ مَنْ عَلَّمَهُ الْقُرْآنَ دُعِيَ بِالْأَبَوَيْنِ فَيُكْسَيَانِ حُلَّتَيْنِ يُضِي‌ءُ مِنْ نُورِهِمَا وُجُوهُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ.

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One who kisses his son, Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, writes down for him one good deed and one who makes him happy Allah will make him happy on the Day of Judgment. قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مَنْ أَبَرُّ قَالَ وَالِدَيْكَ قَالَ قَدْ مَضَيَا قَالَ بَرَّ وَلَدَكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that a man from al-Ansar (people of al-Madinah) once asked him (the Messenger of Allah), ‘To whom should I be kind?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Be kind to your parents.’ He said, ‘They have passed away.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Be kind to your children.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَحِبُّوا الصِّبْيَانَ وَ ارْحَمُوهُمْ وَ إِذَا وَعَدْتُمُوهُمْ شَيْئاً فَفُوا لَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَدْرُونَ إِلَّا أَنَّكُمْ تَرْزُقُونَهُمْ.

‘You must love children and be kind to them. If you promise them, then keep your promise because they do not know anyone except you who provides them sustenance.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ مَنْ أَعَانَ وَلَدَهُ عَلَى بِرِّهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ يُعِينُهُ عَلَى بِرِّهِ قَالَ يَقْبَلُ مَيْسُورَهُ وَ يَتَجَاوَزُ عَنْ مَعْسُورِهِ وَ لَا يُرْهِقُهُ وَ لَا يَخْرَقُ بِهِ‌[2] فَلَيْسَ بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَ أَنْ يَصِيرَ فِي حَدٍّ مِنْ حُدُودِ الْكُفْرِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَدْخُلَ فِي عُقُوقٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص- الْجَنَّةُ طَيِّبَةٌ طَيَّبَهَا اللَّه

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Allah grants mercy to one who supports his children in virtuous deeds.’ He (the narrator) has said that he then asked, ‘How does he support him in virtu

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَ مَا قَبَّلْتُ صَبِيّاً قَطُّ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ هَذَا رَجُلٌ عِنْدِي أَنَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ.

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘I have never kissed a child.’ When he left, the Messenger of Allah said, ‘This man to me is one of the people of hellfire.’”

كُنْتُ جَالِساً عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ يُونُسُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَئِنُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا لِي أَرَاكَ تَئِنُّ قَالَ طِفْلٌ لِي تَأَذَّيْتُ بِهِ اللَّيْلَ أَجْمَعَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَا يُونُسُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ آبَائِهِ ع عَنْ جَدِّي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص- أَنَّ جَبْرَئِيلَ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ وَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ عَلِيٌّ ص يَئِ

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when Yunus ibn Ya’qub came in and I found him moaning. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), asked him, ‘Why are you moaning?’ He replied, ‘I have a child and I suffered last night the whole night because of him.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘O Yunus, my father, Muhammad ibn

مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِرَجُلٍ فَقَالَ مَا فَعَلْتَ امْرَأَتَكَ قَالَ طَلَّقْتُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ قَالَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ تَزَوَّجَ فَمَرَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ص فَقَالَ تَزَوَّجْتَ قَالَ نَعَمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَا فَعَلْتَ امْرَأَتَكَ قَالَ طَلَّقْتُهَا قَالَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ قَالَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ تَزَوَّجَ فَمَرَّ بِهِ ال

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, passed by a man and asked, ’How is your wife doing?’ He said, ‘I have divorced her, O Messenger of Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Did you do it witho

بَلَغَ النَّبِيَّ ص أَنَّ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ طَلَاقَ أُمِّ أَيُّوبَ لَحُوبٌ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet, was informed about abu Ayyub’s divorcing his wife. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, then said, ‘Divorcing ‘Umm (mother of) Ayyub is a sin."

إِنَّ عَلِيّاً قَالَ وَ هُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ لَا تُزَوِّجُوا الْحَسَنَ فَإِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ مِطْلَاقٌ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ هَمْدَانَ فَقَالَ بَلَى وَ اللَّهِ لَنُزَوِّجَنَّهُ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ ابْنُ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَإِنْ شَاءَ أَمْسَكَ وَ إِنْ شَاءَ طَلَّقَ.

‘Do not give in marriage to al-Hassan because he is a man who divorces very often.’ A man from Hamadan stood up and said, ‘Yes, we will give to him in marriage, by Allah, because he is the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (s.w) and the son of ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.). He may keep if he likes or divorce if he so wills

إِنَّ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ع طَلَّقَ خَمْسِينَ امْرَأَةً فَقَامَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِالْكُوفَةِ فَقَالَ يَا مَعَاشِرَ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ لَا تُنْكِحُوا الْحَسَنَ فَإِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ مِطْلَاقٌ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ بَلَى وَ اللَّهِ لَنُنْكِحَنَّهُ فَإِنَّهُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ ابْنُ فَاطِمَةَ ع فَإِنْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ أَمْسَكَ وَ إِنْ كَرِهَ طَلَّقَ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Al-Hassan ibn Ali (a.s.), divorced fifty women. Ali (a.s.), stood in al-Kufa and said, ‘O people of al-Kufa do not give in marriage to al-Hassan because he divorces very often.’ A man stood up and said, ‘Yes, we will give to him in marriage, by Allah, because he is the grandson of the

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ مَنْ طَلَّقَ ثَلَاثاً فِي مَجْلِسٍ عَلَى غَيْرِ طُهْرٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئاً إِنَّمَا الطَّلَاقُ الَّذِي أَمَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ فَمَنْ خَالَفَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ طَلَاقٌ وَ إِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثَلَاثاً فِي مَجْلِسٍ وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ فَأَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ ص أَنْ يَنْكِحَهَا وَ لَا يَعْتَدَّ بِالطَّلَاقِ قَالَ وَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالَ يَا أَ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one divorces his wife in one place and time three times when she is experiencing Hayd (menses) such divorce does not have any valid effect. A valid divorce is that which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has commanded. Whoever does otherwise it is not a divorce. Ibn ’Umar divorced h

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ طَلَّقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثَلَاثاً وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ فَسَأَلَ عُمَرُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُرَاجِعَهَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا طَلَّقَهَا وَاحِدَةً وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ‌[2] فَقَالَ فَلِأَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا كَانَ هُوَ أَمْلَكَ بِرَجْعَتِهَا كَذَبُوا وَ لَكِنَّهُ طَلَّقَهَا ثَلَاثاً فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَنْ يُرَاج

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), state this Hadith. ‘Ibn ‘Umar divorced his wife three times at the same place and time when she experienced Hayd (menses). He asked the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and he commanded him to go back

مَنْ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثَلَاثاً فِي مَجْلِسٍ وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ فَلَيْسَ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ وَ قَدْ رَدَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص طَلَاقَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ إِذَا طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثَلَاثاً وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ فَأَبْطَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص ذَلِكَ الطَّلَاقَ- وَ قَالَ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ خَالَفَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ إِلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ قَالَ لَا طَلَاقَ إِلَّا فِي عِدَّةٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one divorces his wife three times at the same place and time it does not become of any valid effect. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, rejected the divorce of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar when he divorced

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ طَلَاقِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ طَلَّقَهَا وَ هِيَ طَامِثٌ وَاحِدَةً قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَ فَلَا قُلْتُمْ لَهُ إِذَا طَلَّقَهَا وَاحِدَةً وَ هِيَ طَامِثاً كَانَتْ أَوْ غَيْرَ طَامِثٍ فَهُوَ أَمْلَكُ بِرَجْعَتِهَا قَالَ قَدْ قُلْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع كَذَبَ عَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ بَلْ طَلَّقَهَا ثَلَاثاً فَرَدّ

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I asked ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubayd about the divorce of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar and he said, “He divorced her once when she experienced Hayd (menses).”’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘Why did you not say to him, “If he divorced her once during her experiencing Hayd (menses) or when she did not

كُنْتُ عِنْدَهُ إِذْ مَرَّ بِهِ نَافِعٌ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ وَاحِدَةً وَ هِيَ حَائِضٌ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عُمَرَ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُ أَنْ يُرَاجِعَهَا قَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ كَذَبْتَ وَ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَا سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ طَلَّقْتُهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّه

إِنَّ الطَّلَاقَ الَّذِي أَمَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ فِي كِتَابِهِ وَ الَّذِي سَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَنْ يُخَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ فَإِذَا حَاضَتْ وَ طَهُرَتْ مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا أَشْهَدَ رَجُلَيْنِ عَدْلَيْنِ عَلَى تَطْلِيقَةٍ وَ هِيَ طَاهِرٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ جِمَاعٍ وَ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِرَجْعَتِهَا مَا لَمْ تَنْقَضِ ثَلَاثَةُ قُرُوءٍ وَ كُلُّ طَلَاقٍ مَا خَلَا هَذَا فَبَاطِلٌ لَيْسَ بِطَلَاقٍ.

يُرْسِلُ إِلَيْهَا فَيَقُولُ الرَّسُولُ اعْتَدِّي فَإِنَّ فُلَاناً قَدْ فَارَقَكِ. قَالَ ابْنُ سَمَاعَةَ وَ إِنَّمَا مَعْنَى قَوْلِ الرَّسُولِ اعْتَدِّي فَإِنَّ فُلَاناً قَدْ فَارَقَكِ يَعْنِي الطَّلَاقَ إِنَّهُ لَا يَكُونُ فُرْقَةٌ إِلَّا بِطَلَاقٍ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الطَّاطَرِيِّ قَالَ الَّذِي أُجْمِعَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الطَّلَاقِ أَنْ يَقُولَ أَنْتِ طَالِقٌ أَوِ اعْتَ

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا وَ هُوَ غَائِبٌ مَتَى تَعْتَدُّ فَقَالَ يَوْمَ يَبْلُغُهَا وَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ إِنَّ إِحْدَاكُنَّ كَانَتْ تَمْكُثُ الْحَوْلَ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ زَوْجُهَا وَ هُوَ غَائِبٌ ثُمَّ تَرْمِي بِبَعْرَةٍ وَرَاءَهَا.

“One of you would wait for one year, when her husband died and he was absent, hold back her carnal desires and throw it behind her.’””

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ يُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا وَ تَكُونُ فِي عِدَّتِهَا أَ تَخْرُجُ فِي حَقٍّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بَعْضَ نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ ص سَأَلَتْهُ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ فُلَانَةَ تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا فَتَخْرُجُ فِي حَقٍّ يَنُوبُهَا[1] فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أُفٍّ لَكُنَّ قَدْ كُنْتُنَّ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ أُبْعَثَ فِيكُنَّ وَ أَنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنْكُنَّ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا أَخَذَتْ بَع

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman whose husband dies; if she during her waiting period can go out for a right. He (the Imam) said, ‘Certain ones of the wives of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, asked saying, ‘Hu

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَمُرُّ بِالْعَشَّارِ وَ مَعِي مَالٌ فَيَسْتَحْلِفُنِي فَإِنْ حَلَفْتُ لَهُ تَرَكَنِي وَ إِنْ لَمْ أَحْلِفْ لَهُ فَتَّشَنِي وَ ظَلَمَنِي فَقَالَ احْلِفْ لَهُ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَحْلِفُنِي بِالطَّلَاقِ فَقَالَ احْلِفْ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ فَإِنَّ الْمَالَ لَا يَكُونُ لِي قَالَ فَعَنْ مَالِ أَخِيكَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص رَدَّ طَلَاقَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَ قَدْ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثَلَاثاً وَ هِيَ حَائ

“I pass by one-tenth tax collector for trading with a certain amount of assets with me and the party (tax collector) asks me to swear. If I swear he allows me to go, but if I do not swear he searches my assets and does injustice to me. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can swear for him.’ I then said, ‘He asks me to swear in th

أَنَّهُمَا قَالا إِذَا آلَى الرَّجُلُ أَنْ لَا يَقْرَبَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَلَيْسَ لَهَا قَوْلٌ وَ لَا حَقٌّ فِي الْأَرْبَعَةِ الْأَشْهُرِ وَ لَا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ فِي كَفِّهِ عَنْهَا فِي الْأَرْبَعَةِ الْأَشْهُرِ فَإِنْ مَضَتِ الْأَرْبَعَةُ الْأَشْهُرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمَسَّهَا فَسَكَتَتْ وَ رَضِيَتْ فَهُوَ فِي حِلٍّ وَ سَعَةٍ فَإِنْ رَفَعَتْ أَمْرَهَا قِيلَ لَهُ إِمَّا أَنْ تَفِي‌ءَ فَتَمَسَّهَا وَ إِمَّا أَنْ تُطَلِّقَ وَ عَ

“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘If a man swears not to go near his wife, then he has no say and no right for four months; and it is not a sin on him to stay away from her for four months. When four months pass if he agrees to touch her and she remains silent and agrees, then it is fine.

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ أَنْتِ عَلَيَّ حَرَامٌ فَقَالَ لِي لَوْ كَانَ لِي عَلَيْهِ سُلْطَانٌ لَأَوْجَعْتُ رَأْسَهُ وَ قُلْتُ لَهُ اللَّهُ أَحَلَّهَا لَكَ فَمَا حَرَّمَهَا عَلَيْكَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى أَنْ كَذَبَ‌[3] فَزَعَمَ أَنَّ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَهُ حَرَامٌ وَ لَا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ طَلَاقٌ وَ لَا كَفَّارَةٌ فَقُلْتُ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- يا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ ما

‘You are unlawful for me.’ He (the Imam) said to me, ‘Had I control over him I would have hurt his head and said to him that Allah has made her lawful for you, then what has made her unlawful for you? In fact, the one who says it(‘You are unlawful for me’) has lied, because then he would claim that what Allah has made

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الْخِيَارِ فَقَالَ وَ مَا هُوَ وَ مَا ذَاكَ إِنَّمَا ذَاكَ شَيْ‌ءٌ كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص‌[1].

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about choices. He (the Imam) said, ‘Who is he and what is that; it was something only for the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ أَبَاكَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص خَيَّرَ نِسَاءَهُ فَاخْتَرْنَ اللَّهَ وَ رَسُولَهُ فَلَمْ يُمْسِكْهُنَ‌[2] عَلَى طَلَاقٍ وَ لَوِ اخْتَرْنَ‌ أَنْفُسَهُنَّ لَبِنَّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ كَانَ يَرْوِيهِ أَبِي عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَ مَا لِلنَّاسِ وَ لِلْخِيَارِ إِنَّمَا هَذَا شَيْ‌ءٌ خَصَّ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ رَسُولَهُ ص.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that I once heard your father saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, offered his wives the choice and they chose Allah and His Messenger. He did not keep them for divorce. Had they chosen them

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ خَيَّرَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا بَانَتْ مِنْهُ قَالَ لَا إِنَّمَا هَذَا شَيْ‌ءٌ كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص خَاصَّةً أُمِرَ بِذَلِكَ فَفَعَلَ وَ لَوِ اخْتَرْنَ أَنْفُسَهُنَّ لَطَلَّقَهُنَ‌[1] وَ هُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- قُلْ لِأَزْواجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَياةَ الدُّنْيا وَ زِينَتَها فَتَعالَيْنَ أُمَتِّعْكُنَّ وَ أُسَرِّحْكُنَّ سَراحاً جَمِيلًا[2].

ذَكَرَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ قَالَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص لَا تَعْدِلُ وَ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ إِنْ طَلَّقَنَا وَجَدْنَا أَكْفَاءَنَا فِي قَوْمِنَا فَاحْتَبَسَ الْوَحْيُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص عِشْرِينَ يَوْماً قَالَ فَأَنِفَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لِرَسُولِهِ فَأَنْزَلَ‌ يا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْواجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَياةَ الدُّنْيا وَ زِينَتَها فَتَعالَيْنَ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ بَعْضَ نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ ص قَالَتْ أَ يَرَى مُحَمَّدٌ أَنَّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَنَا لَا نَجِدُ الْأَكْفَاءَ مِنْ قَوْمِنَا قَالَ فَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ فَوْقِ سَبْعِ سَمَاوَاتِهِ فَأَمَرَهُ فَخَيَّرَهُنَّ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ فَقَامَتْ وَ قَبَّلَتْهُ وَ قَالَتْ أَخْتَارُ اللَّهَ وَ رَسُولَهُ.

إِنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ قَالَتْ أَ يَرَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنْ خَلَّى سَبِيلَنَا أَنَّا لَا نَجِدُ زَوْجاً غَيْرَهُ وَ قَدْ كَانَ اعْتَزَلَ نِسَاءَهُ تِسْعاً وَ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً فَلَمَّا قَالَتْ زَيْنَبُ الَّذِي قَالَتْ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ جَبْرَئِيلَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ص فَقَالَ- قُلْ لِأَزْواجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَياةَ الدُّنْيا وَ زِينَتَها فَتَعالَيْنَ أُمَتِّعْكُنَ‌ الْآيَتَيْنِ كِلْتَي

إِنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ قَالَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص لَا تَعْدِلُ وَ أَنْتَ نَبِيٌّ فَقَالَ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكِ‌[1] إِذَا لَمْ أَعْدِلْ فَمَنْ يَعْدِلُ فَقَالَتْ دَعَوْتَ اللَّهَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لِيَقْطَعَ يَدَيَّ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ لَتَتْرَبَانِ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّكَ إِنْ طَلَّقْتَنَا وَجَدْنَا فِي قَوْمِنَا أَكْفَاءَنَا فَاحْتَبَسَ الْوَحْيُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص تِسْعاً وَ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that once Zaynab bint Jahash said to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, ‘You are not fair and you are the Prophet.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, ‘May your hands become soiled, ‘If I am not fair then

إِنَّمَا الْخِيَرَةُ لَنَا لَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ وَ إِنَّمَا خَيَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لِمَكَانِ عَائِشَةَ فَاخْتَرْنَ اللَّهَ وَ رَسُولَهُ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُنَّ أَنْ يَخْتَرْنَ غَيْرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص.

The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, gave the choice because of the words of ‘A’ishah. T

إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولُ إِنَّ فُلَاناً زَوْجِي قَدْ نَثَرْتُ لَهُ بَطْنِي‌[1] وَ أَعَنْتُهُ عَلَى دُنْيَاهُ وَ آخِرَتِهِ فَلَمْ يَرَ مِنِّي مَكْرُوهاً وَ أَنَا أَشْكُوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ إِلَيْكَ قَالَ مِمَّا تَشْتَكِينَهُ قَالَتْ لَهُ إِنَّهُ قَالَ لِيَ الْيَوْمَ أَنْتِ عَلَيَّ حَرَامٌ كَظَهْرِ أُمِّي وَ ق

“Abu Ja‘far, Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has stated this Hadith. ‘Once a Muslim woman came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, “O Messenger (of Allah) so and so married me. I gave birth to many children
