سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ فُضِّلَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ بِتِسْعَةٍ وَ تِسْعِينَ مِنَ اللَّذَّةِ وَ لَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلْقَى عَلَيْهِنَّ الْحَيَاءَ.

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘Women have an additional ninety-nine parts of enjoyment above men but Allah has placed shyness upon them.’”

إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَعَلَ لِلْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تَصْبِرَ صَبْرَ عَشَرَةِ رِجَالٍ فَإِذَا حَصَلَتْ زَادَهَا قُوَّةَ عَشَرَةِ رِجَالٍ‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah has placed ten times more patience in women above men, but when grown (excited) she has the force (of desire) like ten men.’”

“‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan had a spy in al-Madinah who reported to him from time to time about things that happened there. Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), set free one of his slave-girls and then married with her. The spy reported this to ‘Abd al-Malik who wrote to Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), in a letter that said, ‘Thereafter,

لَقِيَ هِشَامَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ بَعْضُ الْخَوَارِجِ فَقَالَ يَا هِشَامُ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْعَجَمِ يَجُوزُ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجُوا فِي الْعَرَبِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَالْعَرَبُ يَتَزَوَّجُوا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَقُرَيْشٌ يَتَزَوَّجُ فِي بَنِي هَاشِمٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ عَمَّنْ أَخَذْتَ هَذَا قَالَ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَ تَتَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُكُمْ وَ لَا تَتَكَافَأُ فُرُوجُكُمْ قَالَ فَخَ

’Hisham ibn al-Hakam once met a man of Khawarij (a certain sect) who said, ‘O Hisham, what do you say if al-‘Ajam (non- Arab) marries from Arab?’ Hisham said, ‘Yes, they can marry.’ He asked, ‘Can Arabs marry from Quraysh?’ He replied, ‘Yes, they can marry.’ He then asked, ‘Can Quraysh marry from banu Hashim?’ He repli

أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع تَزَوَّجَ سُرِّيَّةً كَانَتْ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ فِي ذَلِكَ كِتَاباً أَنَّكَ صِرْتَ بَعْلَ الْإِمَاءِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَنَّ اللَّهَ رَفَعَ بِالْإِسْلَامِ الْخَسِيسَةَ وَ أَتَمَّ بِهِ النَّاقِصَةَ فَأَكْرَمَ بِهِ مِنَ اللُّؤْمِ فَلَا لُؤْمَ عَلَى مُسْلِمٍ إِنَّمَا اللُّؤْمُ لُؤْمُ الْجَ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), married a slave-girl who belonged to al-Hassan ibn Ali (a.s) and ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan was informed about it. He wrote a letter to him (the Imam) that said, ‘I have heard that you have become the husband of a slave-girl!’ Ali ibn al-Husayn wrote back to

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ النِّكَاحِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ مَنْ خَطَبَ إِلَيْكُمْ فَرَضِيتُمْ دِينَهُ وَ أَمَانَتَهُ فَزَوِّجُوهُ- إِلَّا تَفْعَلُوهُ‌ تَكُنْ فِتْنَةٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَ فَسادٌ كَبِيرٌ.

‘If one proposes marriage and if you are happy with that person’s religion and trust, then accept his proposal. If you do not do so there will be mischief in the land and a great destruction.’”

“If one proposes marriage and you are happy with his character and religion, then accept his proposal. If you do not do so mischief and great destruction will take place in the land.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one who after knowing that Allah has, through my words, made wine unlawful, drinks wine, his proposal for marriage must not be accepted.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ نِكَاحِ النَّاصِبِ فَقَالَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا يَحِلُّ قَالَ فُضَيْلٌ ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا تَقُولُ فِي نِكَاحِهِمْ قَالَ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ عَارِفَةٌ قُلْتُ عَارِفَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّ الْعَارِفَةَ لَا تُوضَعُ إِلَّا عِنْدَ عَارِفٍ.

‘You must not marry al-Zanj and al-Khazar; they have such wombs that indicate disloyalty.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Of Indians, al-Sind and al-Qand - meaning al-Qandahar - a hybrid does not exist among them.’

“Certain persons of our people once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the case of a Muslim man who likes a beautiful woman; if he can marry her and she is insane. He (the Imam) said, ’No, however, if he has an insane slave-girl he can go to bed with her but must not seek her children (he must use contraceptives).”’
