The Book of Supplication

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ع أَسْأَلُهُ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَنِي دُعَاءً فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ تَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَ أَمْسَيْتَ- اللَّهُ اللَّهُ اللَّهُ رَبِّيَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئاً وَ إِنْ زِدْتَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ ثُمَّ تَدْعُو بِمَا بَدَا لَكَ فِي حَاجَتِكَ فَهُوَ لِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى‌ يَفْعَلُ اللَّهُ ما يَشاءُ[1].

"I wrote to Abu Ja'far al-Thani (al-Jawad) (as) asking him to teach me a supplication. He wrote back to me saying, 'When you wake up in the morning and when you enter the evening, say: 'Allah, Allah, Allah, my Lord, the Merciful, the Compassionate. I do not associate anything with Him.' And if you add to that, it is be

لَا تَدَعْ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ بِهَذَا الدُّعَاءِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ- اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي فِي دِرْعِكَ الْحَصِينَةِ الَّتِي تَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَنْ تُرِيدُ فَإِنَّ أَبِي ع كَانَ يَقُولُ هَذَا مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ الْمَخْزُونِ.

“Do not miss saying in the morning and in the evening three times this, ‘O Lord, place me in Your strong coat of arms in which You place whomever You will’; my father would say that this is of the prayer that is treasured.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا عَنَى بِقَوْلِهِ- وَ إِبْراهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّى‌[1] قَالَ كَلِمَاتٍ بَالَغَ فِيهِنَّ قُلْتُ وَ مَا هُنَّ قَالَ كَانَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ- أَصْبَحْتُ وَ رَبِّي مَحْمُودٌ أَصْبَحْتُ لَا أُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئاً وَ لَا أَدْعُو مَعَهُ إِلَهاً وَ لَا أَتَّخِذُ مِنْ دُونِهِ وَلِيّاً- ثَلَاثاً وَ إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَهَا ثَلَاثاً قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي كِتَابِهِ- وَ إِبْراهِيمَ الَّذِي

"What is the meaning of His words: 'And Ibrahim who fulfilled [his duties].'" (53:37) He said, "Eloquent words that he would say often." I asked, "What were they?". He said, "Whenever he would wake up in the morning, he would say three times: 'I have awakened, and by my Lord, all praise is due to Him, I do not associat

مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَأْخُذُ مَضْجَعَهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَلَا فَقَهَرَ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي بَطَنَ فَخَبَرَ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي مَلَكَ فَقَدَرَ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي‌ يُحْيِ الْمَوْتى‌* وَ يُمِيتُ الْأَحْيَاءَ وَ هُوَ عَلى‌ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ قَدِيرٌ* خَرَجَ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ كَهَيْئَةِ يَوْمَ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ.

“Whoever at the time of going to bed says three times, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Who is High, thus, He is Dominant. All praise belongs to Allah, Who is hidden, thus, He knows. All praise belongs to Allah, Who owns, thus. He has measured (all things), all praise belongs to Allah, Who gives life to the dead, and caus

إِذَا أَوَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي احْتَبَسْتُ نَفْسِي عِنْدَكَ فَاحْتَبِسْهَا فِي مَحَلِّ رِضْوَانِكَ وَ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَ إِنْ رَدَدْتَهَا إِلَى بَدَنِي فَارْدُدْهَا مُؤْمِنَةً عَارِفَةً بِحَقِّ أَوْلِيَائِكَ حَتَّى تَتَوَفَّاهَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ.

“When any of you is about to go to your bed you should say, ‘O Lord, I have placed my soul in Your custody, keep it secure in a place that You like, and forgive, and if You return it to my body, return it with belief, and with knowledge of the rights of Your friends until it will die upon such belief.’”

عِنْدَ مَنَامِهِ- آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَ كَفَرْتُ بِالطَّاغُوتِ اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي فِي مَنَامِي وَ فِي يَقَظَتِي.

“At bedtime he (abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.)) would say, ‘I believe in Allah and reject the devil. O Lord, protect me in my sleep and when I am awake.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ يَقُولُ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَ كَفَرْتُ بِالطَّاغُوتِ اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي فِي مَنَامِي وَ فِي يَقَظَتِي.

“Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) said, ‘Should I tell you about what the Messenger of Allah would say when going to his bed?’ I said, ‘Yes, please do so.’ The Imam said, ‘He would read verse 255 of Chapter two and say, “(I begin) in the name of Allah, I believe in Allah, and reject the devil. O Lord, protect me in my sleep a

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص يَقُولُ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ أَنْ يَلْعَبَ بِيَ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي الْيَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَامِ.

“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) would say, ‘O Lord, I seek protection with You against wet dreams and bad dreams and from Satan playing with me during my sleep or when awake.’”

تَسْبِيحُ فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاءِ ع إِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ فَكَبِّرِ اللَّهَ أَرْبَعاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ وَ احْمَدْهُ ثَلَاثاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ وَ سَبِّحْهُ ثَلَاثاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ وَ تَقْرَأُ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ الصَّافَّاتِ وَ عَشْراً مِنْ آخِرِهَا.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Khalid and al-Husayn ibn Sa’Id all from al-Qasim ibn ‘Urwah from Hisham ibn Salim from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “ Tasbih of Fatimah al-Zahra’ (a.s.) should be said when you are about to go to your bed. أَنَّ شِهَابَ بْنَ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ سَأَلَهُ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ‌[2] أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ قَالَ‌ قُلْ لَهُ إِنَّ امْرَأَةً تُفْزِعُنِي فِي الْمَنَامِ بِاللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ قُلْ لَهُ اجْعَلْ مِسْبَاحاً[1] وَ كَبِّرِ اللَّهَ أَرْبَعاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ تَكْبِيرَةً وَ سَبِّحِ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ تَسْبِيحَةً وَ احْمَدِ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثاً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ وَ قُلْ‌ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ‌ وَحْدَهُ‌ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ‌ لَهُ الْم

“Ask the Imam, ‘A woman frightens me in my dream at night.’ The narrator has said that the Imam said, ‘Tell him to take rosary beads ( sabhah ) and say, ‘Allah is greater than can be described, thirty-four times, all praise belongs to Allah, thirty-three times, Allah is free of defects, thirty-three times,’ then say, “

لَهُ يَا أَبَهْ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَنَامَ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ قُلْ- أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً ص عَبْدُهُ وَ رَسُولُهُ أَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَةِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِقُدْرَةِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِجَلَالِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِسُلْطَانِ اللَّهِ‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلى‌ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ قَدِيرٌ* وَ أَعُوذُ بِعَفْوِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِغُفْرَانِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِرَحْمَةِ ال

“One night the son of Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) came to him and said, ‘Father I want to go to sleep.’ He said son, say, ‘1 testify that no one deserves to be worshipped except Allah, that Muhammad (a.s.) is the servant and messenger of Allah. I seek protection with the greatness of Allah. I seek protection with majesty of

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لَا تَبِيتَ لَيْلَةً حَتَّى تَعَوَّذَ بِأَحَدَ عَشَرَ حَرْفاً قُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي بِهَا قَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِقُدْرَةِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِجَلَالِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِسُلْطَانِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِجَمَالِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِدَفْعِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِمَنْعِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِجَمْعِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِمُلْكِ اللَّهِ وَ أَعُوذ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) said to me, ‘If you can, do not go to sleep without seeking protection with eleven letters.’ I then asked, ‘What are they?’ The Imam told me to say, ‘I seek protection with the majesty of Allah, I seek protection with the power of Allah, I seek protection with the glory of Allah, I seek protectio

كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا أَوَيْتَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ فَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِيَ الْأَيْمَنَ لِلَّهِ عَلَى مِلَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفاً لِلَّهِ مُسْلِماً وَ ما أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ‌.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Whenever you are about to sleep in your bed say, “In the name of Allah, I have placed my right side (for Allah) according to the Millah (tradition and culture) of Ibrahim, submitted to the will of Allah and I am not of the pagans.’”

إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيَقُلْ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّ النَّبِيِّينَ وَ إِلَهِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَ رَبِّ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ‌[1] وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي‌ يُحْيِ الْمَوْتى‌ وَ هُوَ عَلى‌ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ قَدِيرٌ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ صَدَقَ عَبْدِي وَ شَكَرَ.

11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa’Id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mada’Ini from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “When one of you wakes up during the night and says, ‘Allah is free of defects, the Lord of the

إِذَا قُمْتَ بِاللَّيْلِ مِنْ مَنَامِكَ فَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي لِأَحْمَدَهُ وَ أَعْبُدَهُ فَإِذَا سَمِعْتَ صَوْتَ الدِّيكِ فَقُلْ- سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَ الرُّوحِ سَبَقَتْ رَحْمَتُكَ غَضَبَكَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَحْدَكَ عَمِلْتُ سُوءاً وَ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي‌ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ فَإِذَا قُمْتَ فَانْظُرْ فِي آفَاقِ السَّمَاء

“During the night if you wake up say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has returned my spirit to me so I can thank Him and worship Him.’ When you hear the voice of a rooster then say, ‘O the Faultless, the Holy, Lord of the angels and the Spirit, Your mercy comes before Your anger and no one deserves to be worshipped

كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذَا قَامَ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ يَرْفَعُ صَوْتَهُ حَتَّى يُسْمِعَ أَهْلَ الدَّارِ وَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى هَوْلِ الْمُطَّلَعِ وَ وَسِّعْ عَلَيَّ ضِيقَ الْمَضْجَعِ وَ ارْزُقْنِي خَيْرَ مَا قَبْلَ الْمَوْتِ وَ ارْزُقْنِي خَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ.

“When Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) toward the end of night was to wake up he would raise his voice so people of the house could hear him, saying, ‘O Lord, support me against the horror of the Day of Judgment, expand for me the congestion of the grave, grant me the best of what is before death and grant me what is best thereaft

تَقُولُ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ النَّوْمَ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا وَ إِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا.

“When you are about to sleep say, ‘O Lord, if You holdback my soul from returning to my body, have mercy on it and if You will allow it to return, please protect it. ’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ حِينَ يَأْخُذُ مَضْجَعَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا عَمِلَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ خَمْسِينَ عَاماً وَ قَالَ يَحْيَى فَسَأَلْتُ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ وَ قَالَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَمَا إِنَّكَ إِنْ جَرَّبْتَهُ وَجَدْتَهُ سَدِيداً[1].

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Whoever recites Chapter 112 of the Holy Quran one hundred times at the time of going to sleep his deeds of the past fifty years will be forgiven.’ Yahya has said that I asked Sama’a about it and he said that abu Basir narrated to him saying, ‘I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying th

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ- اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَحْيَا وَ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ فَإِذَا قَامَ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ قَالَ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانِي بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنِي‌ وَ إِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ وَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَنْ قَرَأَ عِنْدَ مَنَامِهِ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَ الْآيَةَ الَّتِي فِي آلِ عِمْرَانَ- شَهِدَ اللَّهُ‌ أَنَّهُ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَ الْ

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ari from ibn al-Qaddah from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “When the Messenger of Allah were about to go to his bed he would say, ‘O Lord, in Your name I live and in Your name I wil

مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَقْرَأُ آخِرَ الْكَهْفِ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ إِلَّا تَيَقَّظَ فِي السَّاعَةِ الَّتِي يُرِيدُ[1].

“Whoever recites verse 110 of Chapter 18 he will wake up at the hour he wants to wake up.”

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ مَنْ أَرَادَ شَيْئاً مِنْ قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ وَ أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤْمِنِّي مَكْرَكَ وَ لَا تُنْسِنِي ذِكْرَكَ وَ لَا تَجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ أَقُومُ سَاعَةَ كَذَا وَ كَذَا إِلَّا وَكَّلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ مَلَكاً يُنَبِّهُهُ تِلْكَ السَّاعَةَ.

“The Holy Prophet has said, ‘Whoever likes to wake up at night, at the time of going to sleep should say, “(In the name of Allah) O Lord, do not allow me to ignore Your anger, do not allow me to forget speaking of You, do not make me of the careless ones, so I will wake up at such and such hour,” Allah, the Most Majest

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ حِينَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُكَ تُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْكَ حِينَ خَرَجْتَ فَهَلْ قُلْتَ شَيْئاً قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ قَالَ حِينَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثاً- بِاللَّهِ أَخْرُجُ وَ بِاللَّهِ أَدْخُلُ وَ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَتَوَكَّلُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّا

“Once I saw Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) moving his lips when he wanted to go out of his house while standing at the door. I said, ‘I saw you at the door moving your lips when coming out, did you say something?’ The Imam said, ‘Yes, when a man is leaving his home he should say, “Allah is greater than can be described, [three t

أَتَيْتُ بَابَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَوَافَقْتُهُ حِينَ خَرَجَ مِنَ الْبَابِ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ‌ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ عَرَضَ لَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِذَا قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ قَالَ الْمَلَكَانِ كُفِيتَ فَإِذَا قَالَ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ قَالا هُدِيتَ- فَإِذَا قَالَ‌ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ‌ قَالا وُقِيتَ فَيَتَ

“Once I went to see Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) and met him at the door when he was coming out saying, ‘In the name of Allah, I believe in Allah, and I place my trust in Allah,’ he then said, ‘O abu Hamza, when a servant (of Allah) comes out of his door a Satan stands on his way, when he says, “In the name of Allah,” two

اسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَخَرَجَ إِلَيَّ وَ شَفَتَاهُ تَتَحَرَّكَانِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَ فَطَنْتَ لِذَلِكَ يَا ثُمَالِيُّ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ تَكَلَّمْتُ بِكَلَامٍ مَا تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ أَحَدٌ قَطُّ إِلَّا كَفَاهُ اللَّهُ مَا أَهَمَّهُ مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَاهُ وَ آخِرَتِهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ أَخْبِرْنِي بِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ- بِسْمِ ا

“In the name of Allah, enough for me is Allah, I place my trust in Allah. O Lord, I ask You to grant me all good in my affairs. I seek protection with You against the humiliation in this world and of torment in the next life,” Allah will suffice him in all that is important to him of worldly or of hereafter.’”

مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَابِ دَارِهِ- أَعُوذُ بِمَا عَاذَتْ بِهِ مَلَائِكَةُ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ الْجَدِيدِ الَّذِي إِذَا غَابَتْ شَمْسُهُ لَمْ تَعُدْ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَ مِنْ شَرِّ غَيْرِي وَ مِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيَاطِينِ- وَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَنْ نَصَبَ لِأَوْلِيَاءِ اللَّهِ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْجِنِّ وَ الْإِنْسِ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ السِّبَاعِ وَ الْهَوَامِّ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ رُكُوبِ الْمَحَارِمِ كُلِّهَا أُجِيرُ

“Whoever says, when coming out of his door, ‘I seek protection with that by which the angels of Allah seek protection, against the evil of this new day which when it is its sunset it will not come back, I seek protection against the evil of my soul and the evil of the others, I seek protection against Satan and those w

إِذَا خَرَجْتَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِكَ فَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ‌ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ‌ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا خَرَجْتُ لَهُ وَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَرَجْتُ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ أَوْسِعْ عَلَيَّ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ وَ أَتْمِمْ عَلَيَّ نِعْمَتَكَ وَ اسْتَعْمِلْنِي فِي طَاعَتِكَ وَ اجْعَلْ رَغْبَتِي فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ وَ تَوَفَّنِي عَلَى مِلَّتِكَ وَ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِكَ ص.

“When leaving out of your house say, ‘In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there are no means and no power without Allah. O Lord, I beg You for the best of that for which I have come out and I seek protection against the evil of that for which I have come out. O Lord, expand for me from Your generosity,

كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذَا خَرَجَ يَقُولُ- اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ خَرَجْتُ وَ لَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ وَ بِكَ آمَنْتُ وَ عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِي يَوْمِي هَذَا وَ ارْزُقْنِي فَوْزَهُ وَ فَتْحَهُ وَ نَصْرَهُ وَ طَهُورَهُ وَ هُدَاهُ وَ بَرَكَتَهُ وَ اصْرِفْ عَنِّي شَرَّهُ وَ شَرَّ مَا فِيهِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ بِاللَّهِ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي قَدْ خَ

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) when coming out of his house would say, ‘O Lord, with Your help I have come out, to You I am submitted, in You I believe, and in Y

كَانَ أَبِي ع إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ قَالَ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ* خَرَجْتُ بِحَوْلِ اللَّهِ وَ قُوَّتِهِ لَا بِحَوْلٍ مِنِّي‌[1] وَ لَا قُوَّتِي بَلْ بِحَوْلِكَ وَ قُوَّتِكَ يَا رَبِّ مُتَعَرِّضاً لِرِزْقِكَ فَأْتِنِي بِهِ فِي عَافِيَةٍ.

“My father when coming out of his house would say, ‘(I begin) in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. I have come out by means and power of Allah and not by my own means and power, but, O Lord, by Your power and means, in search for sustenance from You, so grant me sustenance in good health.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ حِينَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ لَمْ يَزَلْ فِي حِفْظِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ كِلَاءَتِهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘If one recites Chapter 112 of the Holy Quran when coming out of his house, ten times, he will remain in the protection of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, and in His custody until he returns home.’”

قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ السَّفَرَ فَقِفْ عَلَى بَابِ دَارِكَ وَ اقْرَأْ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ أَمَامَكَ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ أَمَامَكَ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ وَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ‌ وَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ‌ أَمَامَكَ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ ثُمَّ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي وَ احْفَظْ مَا مَعِي وَ سَلِّمْنِي وَ سَلِّ

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Musa ibn al-Qasim from Sabbah al-Hadhdha’ who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.) has said, ‘When you like to travel, stand at the door of your house and recite Chapter one of the Holy Quran to your front, right and left and Chapter 1 12 of

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْتُ وَ عَلَى اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ.

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) when coming out of the house would say, ‘In the name of Allah, I have come out, in Allah I have place my trust, and there are no means and no power without Allah.’”

يَا صَبَّاحُ لَوْ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْكُمْ إِذَا أَرَادَ سَفَراً قَامَ عَلَى بَابِ دَارِهِ تِلْقَاءَ وَجْهِهِ الَّذِي يَتَوَجَّهُ لَهُ فَقَرَأَ الْحَمْدَ أَمَامَهُ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ أَمَامَهُ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ أَمَامَهُ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ أَمَامَهُ وَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ قَال

“O Sabbah, if any of you likes to go on a journey he should stand at the door of his house facing the direction of his journey and recite Chapter one of the Holy Quran to his front, right and left. Chapters 114 and 113 to his front, right and left. Chapter 112 to his front, right and left, and verse 255 of Chapter two

إِذَا خَرَجْتَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِكَ فِي سَفَرٍ أَوْ حَضَرٍ فَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ‌ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ‌ ما شاءَ اللَّهُ‌ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ فَتَلَقَّاهُ الشَّيَاطِينُ‌ فَتَنْصَرِفُ‌[1] وَ تَضْرِبُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ[2] وُجُوهَهَا وَ تَقُولُ مَا سَبِيلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ- وَ قَدْ سَمَّى اللَّهَ وَ آمَنَ بِهِ وَ تَوَكَّلَ عَلَيْهِ وَ قَالَ‌ ما شاءَ اللَّهُ‌ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ إِ

“When you come out of your house for a journey or arrive home say, ‘In the name of Allah, I believe in Allah, I place my trust in Allah, as Allah wills. There are no means and no power without Allah. Devils are on his way but they move away; the angels strike their faces and say, “You have no way to him. He has spoken

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَنْ قَالَ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ كَانَ مَعَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ إِذَا قَامَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْتَفْتِحَ الصَّلَاةَ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ- بِمُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أُقَدِّمُهُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ صَلَاتِي وَ أَتَقَرَّبُ بِهِمْ إِلَيْكَ‌[3] فَاجْعَلْنِي بِهِمْ‌ وَجِيهاً فِي الدُّنْيا وَ الْآخِرَةِ وَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ‌ مَنَنْتَ عَلَيَّ بِمَعْرِفَتِهِمْ فَاخْ

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Nu’Man from certain individuals of his people from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever just before beginning the prayer says the following will be with Muhamma

تَقُولُ قَبْلَ دُخُولِكَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُقَدِّمُ- مُحَمَّداً نَبِيَّكَ ص بَيْنَ يَدَيْ حَاجَتِي وَ أَتَوَجَّهُ بِهِ إِلَيْكَ فِي طَلِبَتِي فَاجْعَلْنِي بِهِمْ‌ وَجِيهاً فِي الدُّنْيا وَ الْآخِرَةِ وَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ‌ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَاتِي بِهِمْ مُتَقَبَّلَةً وَ ذَنْبِي بِهِمْ مَغْفُوراً وَ دُعَائِي بِهِمْ مُسْتَجَاباً يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

“Say before beginning the prayer, ‘O Lord, I give the lead to Muhammad Your Prophet for the help I need and turn to You through him for my request, grant me respect through him (and his Ahl al-Bayt) in this world and in the next and to be of the people close (to You), O Lord, deem my prayer through them acceptable, my

شَهِدْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ قَبْلَ التَّكْبِيرِ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤْيِسْنِي مِنْ رَوْحِكَ وَ لَا تُقَنِّطْنِي مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ وَ لَا تُؤْمِنِّي مَكْرَكَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَأْمَنُ‌ مَكْرَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْخاسِرُونَ‌- قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا سَمِعْتُ بِهَذَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ قَبْلَكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ مِنْ أَكْبَرِ الْكَبَائِرِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْيَأْسَ مِنْ رَوْحِ اللَّهِ وَ ال

“I observed Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) facing the Qiblah (direction of Ka’bah) before saying Takbir (Allah is greater than can be described) saying, ‘O Lord, do not cause me to lose hope in Your favors and to despair me of Your kindness, or become careless about Your displeasure; no one except the losing people become carele

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص يَقُولُ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الزَّوَالِ‌[1]- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ بِجُودِكَ وَ كَرَمِكَ وَ أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ- بِمُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَ رَسُولِكَ وَ أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ بِمَلَائِكَتِكَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ وَ أَنْبِيَائِكَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَ بِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْغَنِيُّ عَنِّي وَ بِيَ الْفَاقَةُ إِلَيْكَ أَنْتَ الْغَنِيُّ وَ أَنَا الْفَقِيرُ إِلَيْكَ أَقَلْتَنِي عَثْرَتِ

“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) after completing the prayer at noon time would say, ‘O Lord, I seek nearness to You through Your generosity and magnanimity, I seek nearness to You through Muhammad, Your servant, and Your messenger, I seek nearness to You through Your favorite angels. Your messenger prophets

مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا صَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي‌ يَفْعَلُ ما يَشاءُ وَ لَا يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ غَيْرُهُ أُعْطِيَ خَيْراً كَثِيراً.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn Isma’Il have narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid from al-Sabbah ibn Sayabah from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Whoever, after Maghrib prayer, says three times, ‘All praise belongs to

يَقُولُ‌ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءَيْنِ- اللَّهُمَّ بِيَدِكَ مَقَادِيرُ اللَّيْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ وَ مَقَادِيرُ الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ وَ مَقَادِيرُ الْمَوْتِ وَ الْحَيَاةِ وَ مَقَادِيرُ الشَّمْسِ وَ الْقَمَرِ وَ مَقَادِيرُ النَّصْرِ وَ الْخِذْلَانِ وَ مَقَادِيرُ الْغِنَى وَ الْفَقْرِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِي دِينِي وَ دُنْيَايَ وَ فِي جَسَدِي وَ أَهْلِي وَ وُلْدِي اللَّهُمَّ ادْرَأْ عَنِّي شَرَّ فَسَقَةِ الْعَرَبِ وَ الْعَ

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father in a marfu’ manner has said the following: “The Imam (a.s.) after ‘Isha ’ prayer would say, ‘O Lord, in Your hand are the measures of the night and day, the measures of this and the next world, the measures of death and life, the

بَعْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ وَ هُوَ آخِذٌ بِلِحْيَتِهِ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى- يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَ الْإِكْرَامِ ارْحَمْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَ يَدُهُ الْيُسْرَى مَرْفُوعَةٌ وَ بَطْنُهَا إِلَى مَا يَلِي السَّمَاءَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ يُؤَخِّرُ يَدَهُ عَنْ لِحْيَتِهِ ثُمَّ يَرْفَعُ يَدَهُ وَ يَجْعَلُ بَطْنَهَا مِمَّا يَلِي السَّمَاءَ[2] ثُمَّ يَقُولُ يَا عَزِي

“Whoever after every prayer, holds his beard in his right hand and says, ‘O the Owner of glory and magnanimity, have mercy upon me against fire,’ three times, with the left hand raised and the palms up to the sky and says, ‘Grant me safety from the painful torment,’ three times, then removes his hand from his beard and

تَقُولُ بَعْدَ الْفَجْرِ- اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْداً خَالِداً مَعَ خُلُودِكَ وَ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْداً لَا مُنْتَهَى لَهُ دُونَ رِضَاكَ وَ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْداً لَا أَمَدَ لَهُ دُونَ مَشِيَّتِكَ وَ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْداً لَا جَزَاءَ لِقَائِلِهِ إِلَّا رِضَاكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَ إِلَيْكَ الْمُشْتَكَى وَ أَنْتَ الْمُسْتَعَانُ اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ كَمَا أَنْتَ أَهْلُهُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بِمَحَامِد

“Say after the morning prayer, ‘O Lord, to You belongs all praise, the eternal praise, with Your eternity, to You belongs all praise, the praise that does end before Your consent, to You belongs all praise, the timeless praise except as Your wish, to You belongs all praise, a praise whose speaker’s reward could be no o

كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ابْنُ الرِّضَا ع بِهَذَا الدُّعَاءِ وَ عَلَّمَنِيهِ‌[3] وَ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ فِي دُبُرِ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ لَمْ يَلْتَمِسْ حَاجَةً إِلَّا تَيَسَّرَتْ لَهُ وَ كَفَاهُ اللَّهُ مَا أَهَمَّهُ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ بِاللَّهِ وَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ‌ وَ أُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِي إِلَى اللَّهِ‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبادِ فَوَقاهُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئاتِ ما مَكَرُوا لا إِلهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from certain individuals of his people from Muhammad ibn al-Faraj who has said the following: “Once abu Ja’far ibn al-Rida (a.s.) wrote to me and instructed me with this supplication saying, ‘Whoever recites it after the morning prayer, his wish will come true

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ جَاءَ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع إِلَى يُوسُفَ وَ هُوَ فِي السِّجْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا يُوسُفُ قُلْ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ- اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِي فَرَجاً وَ مَخْرَجاً وَ ارْزُقْنِي مِنْ حَيْثُ أَحْتَسِبُ وَ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا أَحْتَسِبُ.

“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Jibril (Gabriel) came to Joseph in prison and said to him, “Joseph, after every prayer say, ‘O Lord, grant me relief, a way out (of difficulties), and sustenance from the sources I expect and from those I do not expect.’”

مَنْ قَالَ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَاتِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ حُفِظَ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَ دَارِهِ وَ مَالِهِ وَ وُلْدِهِ- أُجِيرُ نَفْسِي وَ مَالِي وَ وُلْدِي وَ أَهْلِي وَ دَارِي وَ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ مِنِّي بِاللَّهِ الْوَاحِدِ الْأَحَدِ الصَّمَدِ الَّذِي‌ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَ لَمْ يُولَدْ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ وَ أُجِيرُ نَفْسِي وَ مَالِي وَ وُلْدِي وَ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ مِنِّي‌ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ‌ مِنْ شَرِّ ما خَلَقَ

“Whoever says these words with every obligatory prayer will receive protection for his own soul, his home, his belongings and children: ‘I seek refuge for myself, belongings, children, family, home and everything of me with Allah, the One and only Self- sufficient Who has not given birth to anyone nor is born from anyo

مَنْ قَالَ فِي دُبُرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ- يَا مَنْ‌ يَفْعَلُ ما يَشاءُ وَ لَا يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُ ثَلَاثاً ثُمَّ سَأَلَ أُعْطِيَ مَا سَأَلَ.

9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Mu’awiyah ibn ‘ Ammar who has said the following: “Whoever, after every obligatory prayer says: ‘O the One who does as He wills and does not do as others will,’ three times, and pleads (before Allah) for his wishes they will be granted.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْمَغْرِبَ فَأَمِرَّ يَدَكَ عَلَى جَبْهَتِكَ وَ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي‌ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَ الشَّهادَةِ ... الرَّحْمنُ الرَّحِيمُ‌ اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنِّي الْهَمَّ وَ الْغَمَّ وَ الْحَزَنَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘When you complete your Maghrib (sunset) prayer wipe your hand over your forehead and say, “(I begin) with the name of Allah, besides whom no one deserves to be worshipped. Who knows the unseen and seen, the Beneficent, the Merciful. O Lord, remove from me the sorrow, anxiety, and sadne

كُنْتُ كَثِيراً مَا أَشْتَكِي عَيْنِي فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ‌ ع فَقَالَ أَ لَا أُعَلِّمُكَ دُعَاءً لِدُنْيَاكَ وَ آخِرَتِكَ وَ بَلَاغاً لِوَجَعِ عَيْنَيْكَ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ تَقُولُ فِي دُبُرِ الْفَجْرِ وَ دُبُرِ الْمَغْرِبِ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْكَ‌[1] صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ اجْعَلِ النُّورَ فِي بَصَرِي وَ الْبَصِيرَةَ فِي دِي

أَتَيْتُ أَبَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً جَامِعاً لِلدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ وَ أَوْجِزْ فَقَالَ قُلْ فِي دُبُرِ الْفَجْرِ إِلَى أَنْ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ- سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَ أَسْأَلُهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ قَالَ هِلْقَامٌ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ مِنْ أَسْوَإِ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي حَالًا فَمَا عَلِمْتُ حَتَّى أَتَانِي مِيرَاثٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ رَجُلٍ مَا ظَنَنْت

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنْ يُعَلِّمَنِي دُعَاءً لِلرِّزْقِ فَعَلَّمَنِي دُعَاءً مَا رَأَيْتُ أَجْلَبَ مِنْهُ لِلرِّزْقِ قَالَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْوَاسِعِ الْحَلَالِ الطَّيِّبِ رِزْقاً وَاسِعاً حَلَالًا طَيِّباً بَلَاغاً لِلدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ صَبّاً صَبّاً[2] هَنِيئاً مَرِيئاً مِنْ غَيْرِ كَدٍّ وَ لَا مَنٍّ مِنْ أَحَدِ خَلْقِكَ إِلَّا سَعَةً مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْوَاسِعِ فَإِنَّكَ قُلْ

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَقَدِ اسْتَبْطَأْتُ الرِّزْقَ فَغَضِبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَكَفَّلْتَ بِرِزْقِي وَ رِزْقِ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ يَا خَيْرَ مَدْعُوٍّ وَ يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ أَعْطَى وَ يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ سُئِلَ وَ يَا أَفْضَلَ مُرْتَجًى افْعَلْ بِي كَذَا وَ كَذَا[2].

“Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Sustenance has been delayed.’ He became angry and then told me to say, ‘O Lord, You have undertaken to provide me sustenance and the sustenance of every walking being, O the best to beg from, O the best provider, O the best to plead to, O the best hope, do for me so and so’ . . . m
