إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ع‌ كَانَ عِنْدَكُمْ فَأَتَى بَنِي دِيوَانٍ‌[1] وَ اشْتَرَى ثَلَاثَةَ أَثْوَابٍ بِدِينَارٍ الْقَمِيصَ إِلَى فَوْقِ الْكَعْبِ وَ الْإِزَارَ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ وَ الرِّدَاءَ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى ثَدْيَيْهِ وَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ إِلَى أَلْيَتَيْهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا كَسَاهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا اللِّبَاسُ الَّذِي يَنْبَغِي

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin who lived among you once went to banu Diwan and bought three pieces of clothes for one dinar. One piece was a shirt, which in its length reached above his ankles, a loincloth, which in length reached to the middle of his leg, a gown that reached in his front side up

أَمَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ لَهُ إِزَاراً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي لَسْتُ أُصِيبُ إِلَّا وَاسِعاً قَالَ اقْطَعْ مِنْهُ وَ كُفَّهُ‌[3] قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي قَالَ وَ مَا جَاوَزَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ فَفِي النَّارِ. - مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ‌ مِثْلَهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once commanded me to buy a loincloth for him. I said that I could only find wide ones. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must cut it and stitch its borders.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘My father has said, “Whatever of loincloth passes down the ankles is in the fire.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from

قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِنَبِيِّهِ ص- وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ وَ كَانَتْ ثِيَابُهُ طَاهِرَةً وَ إِنَّمَا أَمَرَهُ بِالتَّشْمِيرِ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, has said, to His Holy Prophet, ‘. . . and your clothes cleanse them,’ (74:4) his clothes were clean but He commanded him to raise them instead of keeping them long (that drag on the ground).”’

لَهُ إِيَّاكَ وَ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ وَ الْقَمِيصِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَ اللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ[4].

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once advised a man from banu Tamim and said to him, ‘You must never allow the loincloth and shirt to hang down to drag; it is the sign of arrogance and Allah does not love arrogance.’”

نَظَرَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِلَى فَتًى مُرْخٍ إِزَارَهُ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ ارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ فَإِنَّهُ أَبْقَى لِثَوْبِكَ وَ أَنْقَى لِقَلْبِكَ.

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), once saw a young man with his loincloths hanging low, and said to him, ‘Son, you must raise your loincloth; it will last longer and help clean your heart (from arrogance).”’

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِذَا لَبِسَ الْقَمِيصَ مَدَّ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا طَلَعَ عَلَى أَطْرَافِ الْأَصَابِعِ قَطَعَهُ.

7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin when wearing a shirt would extend his hands. If the sleeves reached his fingers he would cut them short.’”

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع تُرِيدُ أُرِيكَ قَمِيصَ عَلِيٍّ ع الَّذِي ضُرِبَ فِيهِ وَ أُرِيكَ دَمَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِهِ وَ هُوَ فِي سَفَطٍ[1] فَأَخْرَجَهُ وَ نَشَرَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَمِيصُ كَرَابِيسَ يُشْبِهُ السُّنْبُلَانِيَّ فَإِذَا مُوَضَّعُ الْجَيْبِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ‌[2] وَ إِذَا الدَّمُ أَبْيَضُ شِبْهُ اللَّبَنِ شِبْهُ شُطَبِ السَّيْفِ‌[3] قَالَ هَذَا قَمِيصُ عَلِيٍّ ع الَّذِي ضُرِبَ فِيهِ وَ هَ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked me, ‘Do you like to see the shirt of ’Amir al- Mu’minin, Ali (a.s.) in which he sustained the injury, to show his blood (stain)?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I like to see it.’ He (the Imam) asked for it and it was brought in a basket. رَأَيْتُ قَمِيصَ عَلِيٍّ ع الَّذِي قُتِلَ فِيهِ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَإِذَا أَسْفَلُهُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شِبْراً وَ بَدَنُهُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْبَارٍ وَ رَأَيْتُ فِيهِ نَضْحَ دَمٍ.

“I saw the shirt of Ali (a.s.), in which he was mortally wounded. It was with abu Ja‘far (a.s.), its bottom measured twelve shibr and around his body it was three shibr and I saw marks of blood splashed on it.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع يَا بُنَيَّ أَ لَا تُطَهِّرُ قَمِيصَكَ فَذَهَبَ فَظَنَنَّا أَنَّ ثَوْبَهُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ هَكَذَا فَقُلْنَا جَعَلَنَا اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ مَا لِقَمِيصِهِ قَالَ كَانَ قَمِيصُهُ طَوِيلًا وَ أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يُقَصِّرَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ.

“I once was with abu Ja‘far, when abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), came. Abu Ja‘far, said, ‘You must cleanse your shirt.’ He left and we thought his shirt might have come in contact with something unclean. He came back and he (the Imam) said, ‘It just is as it was.’ We then asked saying, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in se

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَعَا بِأَثْوَابٍ فَذَرَعَ مِنْهُ فَعَمَدَ إِلَى خَمْسَةِ أَذْرُعٍ فَقَطَعَهَا ثُمَّ شَبَرَ عَرْضَهَا سِتَّةَ أَشْبَارٍ ثُمَّ شَقَّهُ وَ قَالَ شُدُّوا ضَفَّتَهُ وَ هَدِّبُوا طَرَفَيْهِ‌[1].

“I once was with abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for a piece of cloth. He (the Imam) took five yards from it, cut it, then measured it with his shibr and in width it was six shibr. He (the Imam) then asked to stitch its borders and trim its edges.’”
