سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ احْذَرُوا أَهْوَاءَكُمْ كَمَا تَحْذَرُونَ أَعْدَاءَكُمْ فَلَيْسَ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَعْدَى لِلرِّجَالِ مِنِ اتِّبَاعِ أَهْوَائِهِمْ وَ حَصَائِدِ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ‌.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from abu Muhammad al-Wabishi who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Be afraid of your desires just as you fear your enemies. Nothing is a more dangerous enemy to men than following their desires and what their tongues harvest.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ مَنْ عَرَّضَ نَفْسَهُ لِلتُّهَمَةِ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ مَنْ أَسَاءَ بِهِ الظَّنَّ وَ مَنْ كَتَمَ سِرَّهُ كَانَتِ الْخِيَرَةُ فِي يَدِهِ.

English translationMuhammad Sarwar

137. And by this chain, who has narrated the following: Imam (asws) said: ‘Amir-ul-Momineen (asws) said: ‘The one who exposes himself for the accusation, so he should not blame the one who thinks bad about him, and the one who conceals his secret, would have the good in his hands (is secure from that)’.

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ إِنَّمَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ اثْنَتَيْنِ- اتِّبَاعَ الْهَوَى وَ طُولَ الْأَمَلِ أَمَّا اتِّبَاعُ الْهَوَى فَإِنَّهُ يَصُدُّ عَنِ الْحَقِّ وَ أَمَّا طُولُ الْأَمَلِ فَيُنْسِي الْآخِرَةَ.

3. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla ibn Muhammad from al- Washsha’ from ‘Asim ibn Humayd from abu Hamza from Yahya ibn ‘Aqil who has said the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘I am afraid for you from two things: following your desires and your never ending hopes of worldly matters; following of desires obstructs one from the truth and never ending hope in worldly matters makes one forget the hereafter.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ

قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ اتَّقِ الْمُرْتَقَى السَّهْلَ إِذَا كَانَ مُنْحَدَرُهُ وَعْراً قَالَ وَ كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ لَا تَدَعِ النَّفْسَ وَ هَوَاهَا- فَإِنَّ هَوَاهَا فِي رَدَاهَا وَ تَرْكُ النَّفْسِ وَ مَا تَهْوَى أَذَاهَا وَ كَفُّ النَّفْسِ عَمَّا تَهْوَى دَوَاهَا.

4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Asamm from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.) once said to me, ‘Beware of an easy climb up that has a very deep and steep climb down.’ “The narrator has said that Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) would say, ‘Do not leave the soul with its desires unguarded; its desires are to destroy it. Leaving the soul with its desires unguarded is hurting the soul, however, guarding the soul against its desires is medicine for its illness.’”

[1]« اتق المرتقى» المرقى و المرتقى و المرقاة موضع الرقى و الصعود من رقيت السلم و السطح و الجبل: علوته. و المنحدر: الموضع الذي ينحدر منه اي ينزل من الانحدار و هو النزول. و الوعر ضد السهل و لعلّ المراد به النهى عن طلب الجاه و الرئاسة و سائر شهوات الدنيا و مرتفعاتها فانها و إن كانت مواتية على اليسر و الخفض إلّا أن عاقبتها عاقبة سوء و التخلص من غوائلها و تبعاتها في غاية الصعوبة و الحاصل أن متابعة النفس في أهوائها و الترقى من بعضها إلى بعض و إن كانت كل واحدة منها في نظره حقيرة و تحصل له بسهولة لكن عند الموت يصعب عليه ترك جميعها و المحاسبة عليها، فهو كمن صعد جبلا بحيل شتّى فإذا انتهى إلى ذروته يتحير في تدبير النزول عنها و أيضا تلك المنازل الدنية تحصل له في الدنيا بالتدريج و عند الموت لا بد من تركها دفعة و لذا تشق عليه سكرات الموت بقطع تلك العلائق فهو كمن صعد سلما درجة درجة ثمّ سقط في آخر درجة منه دفعة، فكلما كانت الدرجات في الصعود أكثر كان السقوط منها أشدّ ضررا و أعظم خطرا فلا بدّ للعاقل أن يتفكر عند الصعود على درجات الدنيا في شدة النزول عنها فلا يرقى كثيرا و يكتفى بقدر الضرورة و الحاجة فهذا التشبيه البليغ على كل من الوجهين من أبلغ الاستعارات و أحسن التشبيهات( آت).ص 336

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي وَ عَظَمَتِي وَ كِبْرِيَائِي وَ نُورِي وَ عُلُوِّي وَ ارْتِفَاعِ مَكَانِي لَا يُؤْثِرُ عَبْدٌ هَوَاهُ عَلَى هَوَايَ إِلَّا شَتَّتُّ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرَهُ‌ وَ لَبَّسْتُ عَلَيْهِ دُنْيَاهُ وَ شَغَلْتُ قَلْبَهُ بِهَا وَ لَمْ أُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا إِلَّا مَا قَدَّرْتُ لَهُ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي وَ عَظَمَتِي وَ نُورِي وَ عُلُوِّي وَ ارْتِفَاعِ مَكَانِي لَا يُؤْثِرُ عَبْدٌ هَوَايَ عَلَى هَوَاهُ إِلَّا اسْتَحْفَظْتُهُ مَلَائِكَتِي وَ كَفَّلْتُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرَضِينَ‌ رِزْقَهُ وَ كُنْتُ لَهُ مِنْ وَرَاءِ تِجَارَةِ كُلِّ تَاجِرٍ وَ أَتَتْهُ الدُّنْيَا وَ هِيَ رَاغِمَةٌ.

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim from abu Hamza from abu la’ far (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said, ‘By My Majesty, Glory, Greatness, Supremacy, My Light, Highness, and Exalted position, whoever of the servants gives preference to his desires over My wish, I make his affairs disintegrate, confuse his world upon him, make his heart grow preoccupied with it (desire) and will not give him more than what I have determined for him. By my Majesty, Glory, Greatness, My Light, Highness, and Exalted position, any servant who gives preference to My wish over his own desire, I will assign My angels for his security, make the skies and earth to guarantee his sustenance and I will be behind each one of his business deals with the merchants and the world will come to him subdued and compelled.”’

[2]تشتت أمره اما كناية عن تحيره في أمر دينه، فان الذين يتبعون الاهواء الباطلة في سبل الضلالة يتيهون و في طرق الغواية يهيمون أو كناية عن عدم انتظام أمور دنياهم فان من اتبع الشهوات لا ينظر في العواقب فيختل عليه أمور معاشه و بسلب اللّه البركة عما في يده او الأعمّ منهما و على الثاني الفقرة الثانية تاكيد و على الثالث تخصيص بعد التعميم و قوله:« لبست عليه دنياه» أي خلطتها أو اشكلتها و ضيقت عليه المخرج منها. و قوله:« شغلت قلبه بها» أي هو دائما في ذكرها و فكرها غافلا عن الآخرة و تحصيلها و لا يصل من الدنيا غاية مناه فيخسر الدنيا و الآخرة و ذلك هو الخسران المبين( آت).ص 335
