سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنْ يُعَلِّمَنِي دُعَاءً لِلرِّزْقِ فَعَلَّمَنِي دُعَاءً مَا رَأَيْتُ أَجْلَبَ مِنْهُ لِلرِّزْقِ قَالَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْوَاسِعِ الْحَلَالِ الطَّيِّبِ رِزْقاً وَاسِعاً حَلَالًا طَيِّباً بَلَاغاً لِلدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ صَبّاً صَبّاً هَنِيئاً مَرِيئاً مِنْ غَيْرِ كَدٍّ وَ لَا مَنٍّ مِنْ أَحَدِ خَلْقِكَ إِلَّا سَعَةً مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْوَاسِعِ فَإِنَّكَ قُلْتَ‌ وَ سْئَلُوا اللَّهَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ‌ فَمِنْ فَضْلِكَ أَسْأَلُ وَ مِنْ عَطِيَّتِكَ أَسْأَلُ وَ مِنْ يَدِكَ الْمَلْأَى أَسْأَلُ.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Khalid and al-Husayn ibn Sa’Id all from al-Qasim ibn ‘Urwah from abu Jamilah from Mu’awiyah ibn ‘ Ammar who has said the following: “Once I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) to instruct me with a supplication for sustenance and he taught me one. 1 had not found anything else as attracting sustenance as this. The Imam said, ‘Say O Lord, grant me out of Your vast magnanimity, lawful and pure sustenance, that is vast, lawful, pure and sufficient for this world and the hereafter in large quantities, pleasant in nutrition with out toiling or being obliged by any of Your creatures except for its being the extra from Your vast generosity; You have said, “. . . ask Allah from His munificence. . . .” (4: 32), from Your munificence I ask sustenance and from Your charity I beg and from Your wealthy hand I plead to receive help.’”

إِذَا قَدِمْتَ أَرْضاً وَ أَنْتَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُقِيمَ بِهَا عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَصُمْ وَ أَتِمَّ وَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُقِيمَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ عَشَرَةِ أَيَّامٍ فَأَفْطِرْ مَا بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَ شَهْرٍ فَإِذَا بَلَغَ الشَّهْرُ فَأَتِمَّ الصَّلَاةَ وَ الصِّيَامَ وَ إِنْ قُلْتَ أَرْتَحِلُ غُدْوَةً.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa’id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah forms who has said the following: “He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘If you arrive in a land where you want to stay for ten days, you must fast. You must perform your Salat (prayer) complete, but if you want to stay for less than ten days, then stop fasting. You can continue until a month and when your stay becomes one month, then complete your Salat (prayer) and fast even if you say, ‘I leave tomorrow.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ibn Faddal from Yunus Fadl ibn Shadhan abu Basir who has said the following: “Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Sustenance has been delayed.’ He became angry and then told me to say, ‘O Lord, You have undertaken to provide me sustenance and the sustenance of every walking being, O the best to beg from, O the best provider, O the best to plead to, O the best hope, do for me so and so’ . . . mention your wish in place of ellipsis.’”

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja’far who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who finds himself in the month of Ramadan during a journey and stays at a place for few days, if he is required to fast. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, he is not obligated to fast until he decides to stay for ten days. Once he makes such a decision, he is then required to fast and must perform his Salat (prayer) complete.’ I then asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who owes several days fast of the month of Ramadan, if he can carry out Qada’ (compensatory fast) of such fast at a place where he has decided to stay. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, until he decides to stay at a place for ten days.’”

Abu Ali a l-Ash ‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Musa ibn Bakr from Zurarah who has narrated the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said the legacy of a child from parents who condemn each other belongs to his mother if she is living and if she is not living then it belongs to the people nearest to her, like maternal uncle.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Musa ibn Bakr from Ja‘far (a.s.), a similar Hadith,’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Isma’Il ibn ‘Abd al-Khaliq who has said the following: “Once one of the companions of the Holy Prophet delayed and when he came, the Messenger of Allah asked, ‘What caused you to delay?’ He replied, ‘Illness and poverty.’ He then said, ‘Should I teach you a supplication with which Allah will remove illness and poverty from you?’ He said, ‘Yes, O the Messenger of Allah, please do so.’ The Messenger of Allah told him to say, ‘There are no means and no power without Allah, the Most High, the Most Great, I place my trust before the living One Who does not die, all praise belongs to Allah Who has not taken anyone as His companion or a child, Who has no partner in His kingdom, and there has never been any supporter for Him against humiliation, and speak of His greatness a great deal.’ “The narrator has said that very shortly thereafter the man came to the Holy Prophet saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, He has removed from me illness and poverty.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Muhammad al- Za’faraniy from who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One who seeks business becomes independent of people.’ I then asked, ‘Even if he has dependents?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, even if he has dependents; nine-tenth of sustenance is in business.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has narrated the following: “This is about the case of a man who decides to proceed with condemnation. He then calls himself as lying before the process of condemnation. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘His woman is returned to him, he is made to suffer the applicable penalty; but if he refuses and proceeds with condemnation process she will never become lawful for him. If a man accuses his woman, he must suffer the penalty. If his son dies, his maternal uncle inherits him. If his father claims him, he is joined with him. If he dies his son inherits him but his father cannot inherit him (the son).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa’Id from Muhammad ibn Khalid from al-Qasim ibn ‘Urwah from abu Jamilah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once I complained to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) for (lack of) help and asked him to instruct me with a supplication to plead for sustenance and he instructed me with a supplication and thereafter I did not grow to be needy again. The Imam told me to, after the night prayer while in prostration say, ‘O the best to call for help and the best to plead to, O provider of vastest charity, O the best hope, grant me sustenance vastly from Your sustenance and find the means of sustenance for me, You have power over all things.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Najran from Muthanna’ al-Hannat from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has narrated the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who forms Mula ‘anah against his wife and rejects her child; then calls himself lying after forming Mula ‘anah and thinks that her child is his child if she is returned to him. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, and it is not honorable. She is not returned to him and it is not lawful for him until the Day of Judgment.’ I then asked about who inherits the child. He (the Imam) said, ‘The mother inherits the child.’ I then said, ‘Suppose if the mother dies and the child inherits her then the child dies. Who inherits him?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘His maternal uncles inherit him.’ I then asked, ‘If the father confirms him as his child will he then inherit him?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he will inherit him but the father cannot inherit from the legacy of the child.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Faraj al-Qummiy from Mu’adh, Bayya’ al-Akyisah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked me, ‘O Mu‘adh, have you become weak in doing business or have withdrawn thereof?’ I replied, ‘I have not become weak or withdrawn.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What then is the matter?’ I replied, ‘We were waiting for a certain issue because when Walid was killed, I had a great deal of goods which was in my possession; and I did not owe anything to anyone and did not think I can finish it before my death.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘So you have quitted business, but quitting business takes away one’s power of reason. Strive for the sake of your dependents and never give them a chance to complain against you.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “I heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.) saying, ‘Once abu Ja’far (a.s.) looked upon a man who was saying, “O Lord, I plead before You for lawful sustenance.” Abu Ja’far (a.s.) said to him, ‘You are asking the sustenance of the prophets, say, “O Lord, I plead before You for lawful sustenance from You that is vast and pure.’”

8. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah, from Sharif ibn Sabiq from al-Fudayl ibn abu Qurrah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked about a man, when I was present, ‘What is holding him back from performing Hajj?’ It was said, ’He has quit business and his wealth is reduced.’ He (the narrator) has said, that he (the Imam) was leaning and he moved to a straight sitting position, and said, to them, ‘You must not quit doing business to become humiliated. Do business, I pray to Allah to grant you blessings.’”

8. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-ffassan ibn Muhammad from Ja‘far ibn Sama‘ah and Ali ibn Khalid al-‘A’quliy from Karram from ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has narrated the following: “About the case of a man who forms Mula ‘anah against his wife and denies her child, then calls himself a liar after forming Mula ‘anah and thinks that the child is his child; if the child can be returned to him, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The child is returned to him. The child is not called his child, he does not leave any legacy for him (father) and the woman is not lawful for him forever.’ I then asked him (the Imam) about who inherits the child. He (the Imam) said, ‘His maternal uncles inherit him.’ I then asked, ‘What happens if the child’s mother dies and the child inherits her, then the child dies: who then inherits him?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The relatives of his mother inherit him.’ I then asked, ‘Can he inherit his maternal uncles? He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Once I said to al-Rida (a.s.) ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause. Pray to Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, to grant me lawful sustenance.’ The Imam said, ‘Do you know what lawful sustenance is?’ I said, ‘That which we earn and is pure.’ The Imam said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) would say, ‘Lawful sustenance is the sustenance of the chosen ones.’ The Imam then instructed me to say, ‘I plead before You for Your vast sustenance.’”

Abu Ali a l-Ash ‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from ‘Ubays ibn Hisham from Thabit from abu Basir who has narrated the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who forms Mula ‘anah against his wife, then they separate from each other. The husband thereafter says that the child is his child and he calls himself a liar. He (the Imam) said, ‘The woman cannot return to him but the child must be joined with him; he cannot skip the child. There is no inheritance for him and if his father does not claim him, then his maternal uncles inherit him but he does not inherit them (maternal uncles). If anyone calls him a son of fornication, such a person must be subjected to whipping as a penalty.’” [Note: The next several passages of the Arabic text are words of al-Fadl and are not translated.]

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid al-‘Attar from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Our sustenance has been delayed.’ The Imam was angered and told me to say, ‘O Lord, You have undertaken to provide me sustenance, and to all walking beings, O the best to call for help, O the best to plead with, O the best of charity providers, O the best of hope bestow upon me such and such, . . . mention your wish in place of ‘such and such’.’”

13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Ali ibn ‘Atiyyah who has said the following: “Abu al-Khattab (meaning Muhammad ibn Miqlas al-Asadiy al-Kufiy) before destroying his belief would present the legal questions of the members of the community before the Imam and bring back the answers. He has narrated from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), the following: ‘You should purchase goods even if prices are high; sustenance comes by means of buying.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu Dawud from abu Hamza from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Once a man came to the Holy Prophet and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am a person with a family, indebted and my condition has turned into difficulty. Instinct me with a supplication with which I can pray to Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, so He will grant me sustenance to pay my debts and help my family.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘O servant of Allah, complete a Wuzu properly, then make a two Rak’at prayer performing complete Ruku ’ and prostration then say, “O the Exalted one, O the only One, O Munificent (eternal), I have turned to You through Muhammad your Prophet, the Prophet of blessings. O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah, I ask through you from Allah, your Lord and my Lord and the Lord of all things, to grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad and his family, and beg You for a noble relief from Your relief, an easy felicity, a vast sustenance, to place together my chaotic conditions, pay my debts and help my family.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Aban from abu Sa’Id al-Makari and others from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah had taught this supplication: ‘O Provider to the needy, O Sympathizer with the destitute, O Guardian of the believing people, O Possessor of strong power, grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad and his family, grant me sustenance, good health and suffice me in that which concerns me.’”

11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Umar ibn’ Udhaynah from Fudayl ibn Yasar who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I have quit doing business and have withdrawn thereof.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Why is that, are you helpless? This is how your wealth goes away. You must not quit doing business. You must continue to seek favors from Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious.’”

12. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Abd Allah al-Hajjal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Burayd al-Tjliy wanted to get married. Burayd said, to Muhammad, ‘Ask abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, about what I am planning to do. I want to return people’s properties left with me for safe- keeping and it keeps me involved. Thereafter I like to stay away from the worldly things and return everyone’s things that belong to them. He (the narrator) has said, ‘Muhammad asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about it, informed him of the story and asked about his decision.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Does he want to start a fight against his own soul? He must not do so. Instead, he must give and take for the sake of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious.’”
