قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ رُبَّمَا حَضَرْتُ مَعَهُمُ الْعَشَاءَ فَيَجِيئُونَ بِالنَّبِيذِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَإِنْ أَنَا لَمْ أَشْرَبْهُ خِفْتُ أَنْ يَقُولُوا فُلَانِيٌ‌[1] فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فَقَالَ اكْسِرْهُ بِالْمَاءِ قُلْتُ فَإِذَا أَنَا كَسَرْتُهُ بِالْمَاءِ أَشْرَبُهُ قَالَ لَا[2].

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may go with these people for dinner and they bring al-Nabidh thereafter. If I do not drink I fear they may say, ‘He is of so and so (Ja‘fariy). “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if a cup of wine and a cup of al-Nabidh are equal. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, they are equal.’ I then asked if the penalty is also the same. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is equal.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘No, by Allah, even if one drop of it is dropped in a hub (a large water container) the whole hub must be thrown out.’”

He had a flowery sheet on him, his beard was trimmed and kohl (metallic color eye powder) was applied to his eyes. We asked him (the Imam) certain questions and when we were to leave, he (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Hassan,’

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), sent for me, when we were in Mina, to come to him with my tools. I went to his tent and offered him (the Imam) the greeting of peace to which he responded and made a hand gesture for me to sit down. I sat down. He (the Imam) took a new shoe and threw it to me. When I wanted to leave I said,

“Once we were walking with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), to (the house of) one of his relatives for offering condolences because of the death of their child. The strap and thong of the shoe of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), broke, so he took his shoes in his hand and began to walk barefoot. Ibn abu Ya‘fur looked at him and took his s
