قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ مِنْ حَقِّ الضَّيْفِ أَنْ يُكْرَمَ وَ أَنْ يُعَدَّ لَهُ الْخِلَالُ‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘It is of the rights of the guest to be honored and to prepare for him toothpicks [restroom according to another script of al-Kafi].”’

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘On the day when the earth will be replaced with another earth.’ (14:48) He (the Imam) said, ‘It will be replaced with purified bread from which people will eat until their accounting is complete.’ Someone then said

إِنَّ يَعْقُوبَ ع كَانَ لَهُ مُنَادٍ يُنَادِي كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ عَلَى فَرْسَخٍ أَلَا مَنْ أَرَادَ الْغَدَاءَ فَلْيَأْتِ إِلَى مَنْزِلِ يَعْقُوبَ وَ إِذَا أَمْسَى يُنَادِي أَلَا مَنْ أَرَادَ الْعَشَاءَ فَلْيَأْتِ إِلَى مَنْزِلِ يَعْقُوبَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said Ya’qub (a.s.), had an announcer who every morning announced from his house to three miles, ‘Those who want lunch can come to the house of Ya’qub.’ In the evening the announcement said, ’Those who want dinner can come to the house of Ya’qub.’”

شَكَوْتُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا أَلْقَى مِنَ الْأَوْجَاعِ وَ التُّخَمِ فَقَالَ لِي تَغَدَّ وَ تَعَشَّ وَ لَا تَأْكُلْ بَيْنَهُمَا شَيْئاً فَإِنَّ فِيهِ فَسَادَ الْبَدَنِ أَ مَا سَمِعْتَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- لَهُمْ رِزْقُهُمْ فِيها بُكْرَةً وَ عَشِيًّا[1].

“I once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), against pain and an upset stomach that I (often) experienced . He (the Imam) said to me, ‘Take lunch and dinner and do not eat anything in between because it harms the body. Have you not heard Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, saying, “For them there is their sustenan

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ عَشَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ع بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ فَلَا تَدَعُوهُ فَإِنَّ تَرْكَ الْعَشَاءِ خَرَابُ الْبَدَنِ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Dinner of the Prophets is after al-’Atmah (the time of late evening Salat (prayer)); so you must not ignore dinner because ignoring it leads to neglecting the body.”’

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Salih who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’Neglecting dinner is senility, thus it is necessary for an aged man to go to sleep when his stomach is full of food.’”

كَانَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع لَا يَدَعُ الْعَشَاءَ وَ لَوْ بِكَعْكَةٍ[3] وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ ع إِنَّهُ قُوَّةٌ لِلْجِسْمِ وَ قَالَ وَ لَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا قَالَ وَ صَالِحٌ لِلْجِمَاعِ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), would not neglect dinner even if it was one cookie; and he (the Imam) would say, ‘Neglecting dinner is ruination of the body.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I am not certain perhaps he (the Imam) said that it is helpful in going to bed with one’s wife.’”

“I once took dinner with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he said, ‘Dinner after ‘ Isha ’ al- Akhirah (time of late evening Salat (prayer)) is like the dinner of the prophets, ‘Alayhim al-Salam.”’

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَنْ تَرَكَ الْعَشَاءَ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ وَ لَيْلَةَ الْأَحَدِ مُتَوَالِيَتَيْنِ ذَهَبَتْ عَنْهُ قُوَّتُهُ فَلَمْ تَرْجِعْ إِلَيْهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً.

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘If one does not take dinner one Saturday and Sunday nights consecutively, his strength will go away and will not come back until forty days later.’”

قَالَ: مَا تَقُولُ أَطِبَّاؤُكُمْ فِي عَشَاءِ اللَّيْلِ قُلْتُ إِنَّهُمْ يَنْهَوْنَّا عَنْهُ قَالَ لَكِنِّي آمُرُكُمْ بِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked me, ‘What do your physicians say about dinner?’ I replied, ‘They prohibit taking dinner.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I however, command you to take dinner.’”

قَالَ: إِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ عِرْقاً يُقَالُ لَهُ الْعَشَاءُ فَإِنْ تَرَكَ الرَّجُلُ الْعَشَاءَ لَمْ يَزَلْ يَدْعُو عَلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ الْعِرْقُ إِلَى أَنْ يُصْبِحَ يَقُولُ أَجَاعَكَ اللَّهُ كَمَا أَجَعْتَنِي وَ أَظْمَأَكَ اللَّهُ كَمَا أَظْمَأْتَنِي فَلَا يَدَعَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْعَشَاءَ وَ لَوْ بِلُقْمَةٍ مِنْ خُبْزٍ أَوْ شَرْبَةٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ[2].

“Al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘In the body there is a vein called ‘Isha’. If one does not take dinner, it continues praying against him until morning; and it says, ‘May Allah make you hungry just as you kept me hungry, and may Allah make you thirsty just as you kept me thirsty.’ No one of you must neglect taking dinner,

قَالَ: يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ وَ بَعْدَهُ يُذْهِبَانِ الْفَقْرَ قُلْتُ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي يَذْهَبَانِ بِالْفَقْرِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ يَذْهَبَانِ بِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said, ‘O abu Hamzah, Wudu (washing) before and after eating food removes poverty.’ I then said, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, does it remove poverty?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it removes poverty.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ غَسْلُ الْيَدَيْنِ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ وَ بَعْدَهُ زِيَادَةٌ فِي الْعُمُرِ وَ إِمَاطَةٌ لِلْغَمَرِ عَنِ الثِّيَابِ وَ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Washing hands before and after eating food removes stains from clothes and clears eyesight.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ وَ بَعْدَهُ يَزِيدَانِ فِي الرِّزْقِ. - وَ رُوِيَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ: أَوَّلُهُ يَنْفِي الْفَقْرَ وَ آخِرُهُ يَنْفِي الْهَمَّ.

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘Wudu before and after eating food increases one’s sustenance.’ It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Wudu before eating food removes poverty and that which is after food removes depression.’”

الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ يَبْدَأُ صَاحِبُ الْبَيْتِ لِئَلَّا يَحْتَشِمَ أَحَدٌ- فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ بَدَأَ بِمَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِ صَاحِبِ الْبَيْتِ حُرّاً كَانَ أَوْ عَبْداً قَالَ وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ يَغْسِلُ أَوَّلًا رَبُّ الْبَيْتِ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ يَبْدَأُ بِمَنْ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ وَ إِذَا رُفِعَ الطَّعَامُ بَدَأَ بِمَنْ عَلَى يَسَارِ صَاحِبِ الْمَنْزِلِ وَ يَكُونُ آخِرُ مَنْ يَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ صَاحِبَ الْمَنْ

لَمَّا تَغَدَّى عِنْدِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع وَ جِي‌ءَ بِالطَّسْتِ بُدِئَ بِهِ ع وَ كَانَ فِي صَدْرِ الْمَجْلِسِ فَقَالَ ع ابْدَأْ بِمَنْ عَلَى يَمِينِكَ فَلَمَّا تَوَضَّأَ وَاحِدٌ أَرَادَ الْغُلَامُ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ الطَّسْتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع دَعْهَا وَ اغْسِلُوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ فِيهَا.

“When abu al-Hassan (a.s.), had lunch and the hand-basin was brought, he (the Imam) was the first to wash his hand while he (the Imam) was sitting in the middle of the assembly room, and he (the Imam) said, ‘Begin with one who is on your right side . 5 When one made wudu the servant wanted to remove the hand-basin, but

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا غَسَلْتَ يَدَكَ لِلطَّعَامِ فَلَا تَمْسَحْ يَدَكَ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا تَزَالُ الْبَرَكَةُ فِي الطَّعَامِ مَا دَامَتِ النَّدَاوَةُ فِي الْيَدِ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’When you wash your hand for food do not wipe it with a towel because blessings continue in the food as long as hands have moisture in them/”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ لَمْ يَمَسَّ الْمِنْدِيلَ وَ إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ مَسَّ الْمِنْدِيلَ.

“I saw abu al-Hassan (a.s.), when making wudu (washing his hands) before food did not wipe his hands with a towel, but he wiped them when he (the Imam) made wudu after food.’”

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَشَكَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ الرَّمَدَ فَقَالَ لِي أَ وَ تُرِيدُ الطَّرِيفَ‌[1] ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي إِذَا غَسَلْتَ يَدَكَ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ فَامْسَحْ حَاجِبَيْكَ وَ قُلْ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْمُحْسِنِ الْمُجْمِلِ الْمُنْعِمِ الْمُفْضِلِ قَالَ فَفَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَمَا رَمِدَتْ عَيْنِي بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ‌ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ*.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا وُضِعَتِ الْمَائِدَةُ حَفَّتْهَا أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافِ مَلَكٍ فَإِذَا قَالَ الْعَبْدُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَارَكَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي طَعَامِكُمْ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ لِلشَّيْطَانِ اخْرُجْ يَا فَاسِقُ لَا سُلْطَانَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَإِذَا فَرَغُوا فَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ قَوْمٌ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَأَدَّوْا شُكْرَ رَبِّهِمْ وَ إِذَا لَمْ

“When the table is spread four thousand angels surround it and when a servant of Allah says, ‘In the name of Allah’ the angels say, ‘May Allah grant you blessings in your food.’ Then they (angels) say to Satan, ‘Move away, O disobedient, you have no authority over them.’ When they complete eating their food and say, ‘A

إِذَا وُضِعَ الْخِوَانُ فَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ إِذَا أَكَلْتَ فَقُلْ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَوَّلِهِ وَ آخِرِهِ وَ إِذَا رُفِعَ فَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once the brother of my father (a.s.), ‘Abd Allah ibn Ali came to ask permission for ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubayd, Wasil and Bashir al-Rahhahl and he granted them permission. They sat down. He (the Imam) said, ‘For everything there is a limit where it ends.’ They brought food and it was made availa

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ مَنْ أَكَلَ طَعَاماً فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ فَإِنْ نَسِيَ فَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ مِنْ بَعْدُ تَقَيَّأَ الشَّيْطَانُ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ مَا كَانَ أَكَلَ وَ اسْتَقَلَّ الرَّجُلُ الطَّعَامَ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘One who eats food must mention the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious on it; but if one forgets and remembers later, Satan, may Allah condemn him, throws up what he has eaten and one feels as if the food is not sufficient.’”

إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ الْمُسْلِمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ طَعَاماً فَأَهْوَى بِيَدِهِ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* غَفَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَصِلَ اللُّقْمَةُ إِلَى فِيهِ.

’In the name of Allah’ and ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds’ Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, forgives him before a morsel reaches his mouth.’”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا وُضِعَتِ الْمَائِدَةُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ قَالَ- سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا تَبْتَلِينَا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تُعْطِينَا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تُعَافِينَا اللَّهُمَّ أَوْسِعْ عَلَيْنَا وَ عَلَى فُقَرَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ الْمُسْلِمَاتِ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when food was made available for him said, ‘O Lord, You are free of all defects, how good is Your trial for us. O Lord, You are free of all defects, and how great is what You have granted us, O Lord,

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا طَعِمَ عِنْدَ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ قَالَ لَهُمْ طَعِمَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَ أَكَلَ عِنْدَكُمُ الْأَبْرَارُ وَ صَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ الْأَخْيَارُ.

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when eating food with a family would say to them, “Fasting people have received food with you, virtuous people have eaten food with you and chosen angels have prayed for you.’””

إِذَا أَكَلْتَ الطَّعَامَ فَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَ آخِرِهِ فَإِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا سَمَّى قَبْلَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ مَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ وَ إِذَا لَمْ يُسَمِّ أَكَلَ مَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِذَا سَمَّى بَعْدَ مَا يَأْكُلُ وَ أَكَلَ الشَّيْطَانُ مَعَهُ تَقَيَّأَ الشَّيْطَانُ مَا كَانَ أَكَلَ.

‘In the name of Allah’ at its beginning and at its end’; when a servant says it before he eats, Satan cannot eat with him; but if he did not mention the name of Allah, Satan eats with him. If he then says, ‘In the name of Allah’ after he begins and Satan had been eating with him, Satan then throws up what he had eaten.
