كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِالْحِجْرِ فَاسْتَسْقَى مَاءً فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ صُفْرٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ إِنَّ عَبَّادَ بْنَ كَثِيرٍ يَكْرَهُ الشُّرْبَ فِي الصُّفْرِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ وَ قَالَ ع لِلرَّجُلِ أَلَّا سَأَلْتَهُ أَ ذَهَبٌ هُوَ أَمْ فِضَّةٌ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), in al-Hijr (near al-Ka‘bah) and he asked for water. Water was brought in a yellow bowl (made of brass) and a man said, “Abbad ibn Kathir dislikes drinking water from yellow.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He (the Imam) said to the man, ‘Did you ask him (‘Abbad ibn Kat

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ لَا تَشْرَبُوا الْمَاءَ مِنْ ثُلْمَةِ الْإِنَاءِ[2] وَ لَا مِنْ عُرْوَتِهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَقْعُدُ عَلَى الْعُرْوَةِ وَ الثُّلْمَةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Do not drink water from the broken part of a bowl or from its handle because Satan sits on the broken part and on the handle (ring).”’

قَالَ أَبِي لِعَمْرِو بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ وَ بَشِيرٍ الرَّحَّالِ وَ وَاصِلٍ فِي حَدِيثٍ وَ لَا يُشْرَبُ مِنْ أُذُنِ الْكُوزِ وَ لَا مِنْ كَسْرِهِ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ مَشْرَبُ الشَّيَاطِينِ.

“Do not drink water from the ear (handle) of a bowl or its broken part if there is any, because it is the place from which Satan drinks.’””

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ص بِقَوْمٍ يَشْرَبُونَ الْمَاءَ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ص اشْرَبُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا خَيْرُ أَوَانِيكُمْ.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once passed by a pe

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ص يُعْجِبُهُ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ فِي الْإِنَاءِ الشَّامِيِّ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ هُوَ أَنْظَفُ آنِيَتِكُمْ.

"The Messenger of Allah (sw) liked to drink with Syrian bowls and said, ‘It is the cleanest of your utensils.’"

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وَ ذَكَرَ مِصْرَ فَقَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص لَا تَأْكُلُوا فِي فَخَّارِهَا وَ لَا تَغْسِلُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ بِطِينِهَا فَإِنَّهُ يَذْهَبُ بِالْغَيْرَةِ وَ يُورِثُ الدِّيَاثَةَ.

‘When a city (Egypt) was mentioned, the Holy Prophet, said, ‘You must not eat in its pottery bowls; do not wash your head with its clay because it takes away one’s courage (protective feeling) and causes one to become a pimp.’”

اشْتَكَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ إِخْوَانِنَا بِمَكَّةَ حَتَّى سَقَطَ لِلْمَوْتِ فَلَقِينَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ يَا مُصَادِفُ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ قُلْتُ تَرَكْتُهُ بِالْمَوْتِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ أَمَا لَوْ كُنْتُ مَكَانَكُمْ لَسَقَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمِيزَابِ فَطَلَبْنَا عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا ارْتَفَعَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَأَرْعَدَتْ وَ أَبْرَقَتْ وَ أَمْطَرَ

“Once in Makkah one of our brothers (in belief) fell ill and was near death. We met abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), on the way and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Musadif, how is so and so doing?’ I replied, ‘I left him for death, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Were I in your place I wo

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ اشْرَبُوا مَاءَ السَّمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يُطَهِّرُ الْبَدَنَ وَ يَدْفَعُ الْأَسْقَامَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ يُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ‌ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ‌ بِهِ وَ يُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطانِ وَ لِيَرْبِطَ عَلى‌ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَ يُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدامَ‌[1].

‘’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You should drink of the water of the sky, it cleanses the body and removes illnesses as Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “He sends water from the sky to cleanse you with it and remove the filth of Satan from you and to make your hearts firmly related and to make you steadfast

مَا إِخَالُ‌[3] أَحَداً يُحَنَّكُ بِمَاءِ الْفُرَاتِ إِلَّا أَحَبَّنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ قَالَ ع مَا سُقِيَ أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ إِلَّا لِأَمْرٍ مَا وَ قَالَ يُصَبُّ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ.

“In whoever ’s mouth water of Euphrates is dropped in childhood, I do not think he will not love us, people of the house.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘People of al-Kufah were not made to drink water of Euphrates except for a certain matter.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Two shoots of water fall in it (Euphrates) from the garden (para

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ نَهَرُكُمْ هَذَا يَعْنِي مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ يَصُبُّ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنْ مَيَازِيبِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَوْ كَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ أَمْيَالٌ لَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَ نَسْتَسْقِي بِهِ‌[5].

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘In your canal, this one, that is, Euphrates, there are two shoots of the shoots of the garden (paradise).’ He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Had there not been many miles in between we would drink water from it (Euphrates).”’

مَرَرْتُ بِالْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ص وَ هُمَا فِي الْفُرَاتِ مُسْتَنْقِعَانِ فِي إِزَارَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا يَا ابْنَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمَا أَفْسَدْتُمَا الْإِزَارَيْنِ فَقَالا لِي يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ فَسَادُنَا لِلْإِزَارَيْنِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ فَسَادِ الدِّينِ إِنَّ لِلْمَاءِ أَهْلًا وَ سُكَّاناً كَسُكَّانِ الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ قَالا إِلَى أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ فَقُلْتُ إِلَى هَذَا الْمَاءِ فَقَالا

“I once passed by al-Hassan and al-Husayn, Alayhim al-Salam, who were in soaked wraparound cloths. I then said to them, ‘Grandchildren of the Messenger of Allah, you have ruined your wraparound cloths.’ They said to me, ‘O abu Sa‘id, ruining our wraparound cloths is more preferable to us than ruining the religion. كُنْتُ عِنْدَ حَوْضِ زَمْزَمَ فَأَتَانِي رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِي لَا تَشْرَبْ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَاءِ يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ فَإِنَّ هَذَا يَشْتَرِكُ فِيهِ الْجِنُّ وَ الْإِنْسُ وَ هَذَا لَا يَشْتَرِكُ فِيهِ إِلَّا الْإِنْسُ قَالَ‌ فَتَعَجَّبْتُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ وَ قُلْتُ مِنْ أَيْنَ عَلِمَ هَذَا قَالَ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا كَانَ مِنْ قَوْلِ الرَّجُلِ لِي فَقَالَ ع لِي إِنَّ ذَلِكَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ أَرَادَ إِرْشَاد

“I once was near the pond of Zamzam when a man came and said, ‘O abu Hamzah, do not drink from this water because it is shared by both al-Jin and man, and this one is just for human beings/ I found his words strange and then thought, ‘How did he know it?’ I then asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about it and he (the Imam) said,

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذَا اسْتَسْقَى الْمَاءَ فَلَمَّا شَرِبَهُ رَأَيْتُهُ قَدِ اسْتَعْبَرَ وَ اغْرَوْرَقَتْ عَيْنَاهُ بِدُمُوعِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي يَا دَاوُدُ- لَعَنَ اللَّهُ قَاتِلَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع وَ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ شَرِبَ الْمَاءَ فَذَكَرَ الْحُسَيْنَ ع وَ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ وَ لَعَنَ قَاتِلَهُ إِلَّا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ مِائَةَ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ وَ حَطَّ عَنْهُ مِائَةَ أَلْفِ سَيِّئَةٍ وَ

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when he asked for water and when he drank water, I saw him (the Imam) weeping and tears come out of his eyes. He (the Imam) said to me, ‘May Allah condemn those who murdered al-Husayn (a.s.). Whoever of the servants (of Allah) when drinking water, remembers al-Husayn (a.s.), and

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمَّا أَهْبَطَ آدَمَ ع أَمَرَهُ بِالْحَرْثِ وَ الزَّرْعِ وَ طَرَحَ إِلَيْهِ غَرْساً مِنْ غُرُوسِ الْجَنَّةِ فَأَعْطَاهُ النَّخْلَ وَ الْعِنَبَ وَ الزَّيْتُونَ وَ الرُّمَّانَ فَغَرَسَهَا لِيَكُونَ لِعَقِبِهِ وَ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ فَأَكَلَ هُوَ مِنْ ثِمَارِهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ إِبْلِيسُ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ يَا آدَمُ مَا هَذَا الْغَرْسُ الَّذِي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَعْرِفُهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَ قَدْ كُنْتُ فِيهَا

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, made Adam (a.s.) to descend, He commanded him to farm and plant and threw to him a plant from the plant of the garden (paradises). He gave him palm trees, grape vines, olives and pomegranates. He planted them for his offspring and descendents.

لَمَّا هَبَطَ نُوحٌ ع مِنَ السَّفِينَةِ غَرَسَ غَرْساً وَ كَانَ فِيمَا غَرَسَ ع الْحَبَلَةُ[1] ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ إِبْلِيسُ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ فَقَلَعَهَا ثُمَّ إِنَّ نُوحاً ع عَادَ إِلَى غَرْسِهِ فَوَجَدَهُ عَلَى حَالِهِ وَ وَجَدَ الْحَبَلَةَ قَدْ قُلِعَتْ وَ وَجَدَ إِبْلِيسَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ عِنْدَهَا فَأَتَاهُ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ إِبْلِيسَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ قَلَعَهَا فَقَالَ نُوحٌ لِإِبْ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘When Noah (a.s.), disembarked from the ark, he established a plantation and of the things that he planted was a vine of grapes. He went back to his family and Iblis, may he be condemned, uprooted it. Noah (a.s.), went to his plantation. He found everything in its condition except the grap

سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بَعَثَنِي‌ رَحْمَةً لِلْعالَمِينَ‌ وَ لِأَمْحَقَ الْمَعَازِفَ وَ الْمَزَامِيرَ وَ أُمُورَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَ الْأَوْثَانَ وَ قَالَ أَقْسَمَ رَبِّي أَنْ لَا يَشْرَبَ عَبْدٌ لِي فِي الدُّنْيَا خَمْراً إِلَّا سَقَيْتُهُ مِثْلَ مَا شَرِبَ مِنْهَا مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ- يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مُعَذَّباً أَوْ مَغْفُوراً لَهُ وَ

“Once abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about wine. Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent me as mercy for the worlds. (Allah sent me) to eradicate playi

يُؤْتَى شَارِبُ الْخَمْرِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مُسْوَدّاً وَجْهُهُ مُدْلِعاً لِسَانَهُ‌[1] يَسِيلُ لُعَابُهُ عَلَى صَدْرِهِ وَ حَقٌّ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ يَسْقِيَهُ مِنْ طِينَةِ خَبَالٍ أَوْ قَالَ مِنْ بِئْرِ خَبَالٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ مَا بِئْرُ خَبَالٍ قَالَ بِئْرٌ يَسِيلُ فِيهَا صَدِيدُ الزُّنَاةِ[2].

The wine drinker on the Day of Judgment will be brought with his face all black, his tongue hanging down and his saliva flowing on his chest. It is a right on Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, to make him drink from tinah of Khabal or that he (the Imam) said, ‘from the well of Khabal’. I (the narrator) then asked, ‘

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْمَوْلُودُ يُولَدُ فَنَسْقِيهِ مِنَ الْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ مَنْ سَقَى مَوْلُوداً خَمْراً أَوْ قَالَ مُسْكِراً سَقَاهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ وَ إِنْ غَفَرَ لَهُ.

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), if we can make a new born drink wine. He (the Imam) said, ‘If one makes a child drink wine’ or he said, ‘intoxicating liquor, Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will make him drink al-Hamim (boiling water that roasts the face when drinking) of hell even if He forgives him.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَنْ شَرِبَ مُسْكِراً أَوْ سَقَاهُ صَبِيّاً لَا يَعْقِلُ سَقَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْحَمِيمِ مُعَذَّباً أَوْ مَغْفُوراً لَهُ وَ مَنْ تَرَكَ الْمُسْكِرَ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِي أَدْخَلْتُهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَ سَقَيْتُهُ مِنَ الرَّحِيقِ الْمَخْتُومِ وَ فَعَلْتُ بِهِ مِنَ الْكَرَامَةِ مَا أَفْعَلُ بِأَوْلِيَائِي.

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “If one drinks an intoxicating liquor or makes a child, who does not understand, to drink it, I will make him to drink al-Hamim, regardless of whether he will suffer punishment or will be forgiven. لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْخَمْرَ وَ عَاصِرَهَا وَ مُعْتَصِرَهَا وَ بَائِعَهَا وَ مُشْتَرِيَهَا وَ سَاقِيَهَا وَ آكِلَ ثَمَنِهَا وَ شَارِبَهَا وَ حَامِلَهَا وَ الْمَحْمُولَةَ إِلَيْهِ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has condemned wine. He has condemned those who squeeze the juice for it, those who want it be squeezed, those who sell it, those who buy it, those who serve it, those who receive payment for it, those

شَارِبُ الْمُسْكِرِ لَا عِصْمَةَ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ‌[3].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Those who drink wine will not receive any protection from us.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ مُسْكِراً كَانَ حَقّاً عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ يَسْقِيَهُ مِنْ طِينَةِ خَبَالٍ قُلْتُ وَ مَا طِينَةُ خَبَالٍ فَقَالَ صَدِيدُ فُرُوجِ الْبَغَايَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor, it is a right on Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, to make him drink from tinah of Khabal.’ I asked, ‘What is it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is puss from the vagina of fornicators.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَا يَنَالُ شَفَاعَتِي مَنِ اسْتَخَفَّ بِصَلَاتِهِ وَ لَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يَنَالُ شَفَاعَتِي مَنْ شَرِبَ الْمُسْكِرَ وَ لَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘My intercession will not apply to those who take their Salat (prayer) lightly and he will not be able to reach before me on the pond. No, by Allah my in

مَنْ شَرِبَ مُسْكِراً لَمْ تُقْبَلْ مِنْهُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ إِنْ عَادَ سَقَاهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ طِينَةِ خَبَالٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ مَا طِينَةُ خَبَالٍ فَقَالَ مَاءٌ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ فُرُوجِ الزُّنَاةِ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days. If he returns to drink again Allah will make him drink from Tinah of Khabal, which he (the Imam) said, is a liquid that comes out of the vagina of fornicators.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع إِنَّا رُوِّينَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ص أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ لَمْ تُحْتَسَبْ لَهُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً قَالَ فَقَالَ صَدَقُوا قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ لَا تُحْتَسَبُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحاً لَا أَقَلَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَ لَا أَكْثَرَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَدَّرَ خَلْقَ الْإِنْسَانِ فَصَيَّرَهُ نُطْفَةً أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً ثُمَّ نَقَلَهَا فَصَيَّرَهَا عَلَقَةً أ

“If one drinks wine his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken the truth.’ I then asked, ‘How is it that his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days: no less and no more?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, determined the creation of human being

سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ شَرٌّ أَمْ تَرْكُ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَ وَ تَدْرِي لِمَ ذَاكَ قَالَ لَا قَالَ لِأَنَّهُ يَصِيرُ فِي حَالٍ لَا يَعْرِفُ مَعَهَا رَبَّهُ.

“Once a man asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is drinking wine more evil or not performing Salat (prayer)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Drinking wine is more evil.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Do you know why?’ The man said, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said,

الشُّرْبُ مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ وَ مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ وَ إِنَّ الْخَمْرَ رَأْسُ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ وَ شَارِبَهَا مُكَذِّبٌ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى لَوْ صَدَّقَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ حَرَّمَ حَرَامَهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking wine is the key to all evil and a wine addict is like an idol worshipper. Wine is the head of all sins and a wine drinker is a rejecter of the book of Allah, most High; had he accepted the book of Allah he would consider what it declares unlawful as unlawful.’”

مَا عُصِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ أَشَدَّ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْخَمْرِ إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ لَيَدَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْفَرِيضَةَ وَ يَثِبُ عَلَى أُمِّهِ وَ أُخْتِهِ وَ ابْنَتِهِ وَ هُوَ لَا يَعْقِلُ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah is not disobeyed by anything more severely than by drinking wine. One of them may neglect obligatory Salat (prayer), fall on his mother, sister or daughter when drunk and be devoid of reason.’”

قِيلَ لِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِنَّكَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ شُرْبَ الْخَمْرِ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الزِّنَا وَ السَّرِقَةِ فَقَالَ ع نَعَمْ إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الزِّنَا لَعَلَّهُ‌[1] لَا يَعْدُوهُ إِلَى غَيْرِهِ وَ إِنَّ شَارِبَ الْخَمْرِ إِذَا شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ زَنَى وَ سَرَقَ وَ قَتَلَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ تَرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ.

“It was said to ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), ‘You think that drinking wine is a sin which is more serious than fornication and theft.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, because a fornicator perhaps does not extend it to other sins but a wine drinker when he drinks, fornicates, steals and murders a soul which Allah, most Majestic,

شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking wine is the key to all evil.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْمُسْكِرَ حَتَّى يَفْنَى عُمُرُهُ كَانَ كَمَنْ عَبَدَ الْأَوْثَانَ وَ مَنْ تَرَكَ مُسْكِراً مَخَافَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَ سَقَاهُ مِنَ الرَّحِيقِ الْمَخْتُومِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor until his life ends he is like an idol worshipper. If one quits drinking intoxicating liquor for fear of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, He will admit him in the garden (paradises) and give him drinks from exquisite, sealed nectar (containers).’”

لَيْسَ مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ الَّذِي يَشْرَبُهَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ وَ لَكِنِ الَّذِي يُوَطِّنُ نَفْسَهُ أَنَّهُ إِذَا وَجَدَهَا شَرِبَهَا.

“We once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘A wine addict is not one who drinks every day, he however, is one who settles his soul upon drinking it whenever he finds it.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَرَّمَ الْخَمْرَ بِعَيْنِهَا[1] فَقَلِيلُهَا وَ كَثِيرُهَا حَرَامٌ كَمَا حَرَّمَ الْمَيْتَةَ وَ الدَّمَ وَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الشَّرَابَ مِنْ كُلِّ مُسْكِرٍ وَ مَا حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فَقَدْ حَرَّمَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made the very substance of wine unlawful, in a small or large quantity. It is unlawful just as dead animals, blood and pork are unlawful. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to

كُنْتُ مُبْتَلًى بِالنَّبِيذِ مُعْجَباً بِهِ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَصِفُ لَكَ النَّبِيذَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي بَلْ أَنَا أَصِفُهُ لَكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَذَا نَبِيذُ السِّقَايَةِ بِفِنَاءِ الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لِي لَيْسَ هَكَذَا كَانَتِ السِّقَايَةُ إِنَّمَا السِّقَايَةُ زَمْزَمُ أَ فَتَدْرِي مَنْ أَوَّ

“I liked al-Nabidh a great deal and I said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I want to describe al-Nabidh before you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, allow me to describe it for you. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of th

اسْتَأْذَنْتُ لِبَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ حَلَالٌ فَقَالَ أَصْلَحَكَ‌ اللَّهُ إِنَّمَا سَأَلْتُكَ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ الَّذِي يُجْعَلُ فِيهِ الْعَكَرُ فَيَغْلِي حَتَّى يُسْكِرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ فَإِنَّ مَنْ عِنْدَنَا بِالْعِرَاقِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص إِن

“I once asked for permission from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), for a certain person of our people and he asked him (the Imam) about al-Nabidh. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is lawful.’ He said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I asked about al-Nabidh which is placed in al-‘Akr (murky) to boil until it becomes intoxicating.’ Abu

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ رُبَّمَا حَضَرْتُ مَعَهُمُ الْعَشَاءَ فَيَجِيئُونَ بِالنَّبِيذِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَإِنْ أَنَا لَمْ أَشْرَبْهُ خِفْتُ أَنْ يَقُولُوا فُلَانِيٌ‌[1] فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فَقَالَ اكْسِرْهُ بِالْمَاءِ قُلْتُ فَإِذَا أَنَا كَسَرْتُهُ بِالْمَاءِ أَشْرَبُهُ قَالَ لَا[2].

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may go with these people for dinner and they bring al-Nabidh thereafter. If I do not drink I fear they may say, ‘He is of so and so (Ja‘fariy). What must I do in such case?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can break it with water.’ I then asked, ‘When I break it with water can I then

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ أَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ وَ زِيَادُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَارِثِيُّ عَلَيْهَا فَاسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَ تَمَكَّنْتُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِي قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي الْحَارِثِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَ قَدْ هَدَانِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَى مَحَبَّتِكُمْ وَ مَوَدَّتِكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي أَبُ

“I once went to al-Madinah when Ziyad ibn ‘Ubayd Allah al-Harithiy was the governor. I asked permission to visit abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.). I then visited and offered him (the Imam) the greeting of peace and took my place. I then said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I am from banu al-Harith ibn Ka‘b and Allah, most Majestic, m

كَانَ أَبُو بَصِيرٍ وَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَشْرَبُونَ النَّبِيذَ يَكْسِرُونَهُ بِالْمَاءِ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِذَلِكَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لِي وَ كَيْفَ صَارَ الْمَاءُ يُحَلِّلُ الْمُسْكِرَ مُرْهُمْ لَا يَشْرَبُوا مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا وَ لَا كَثِيراً قُلْتُ إِنَّهُمْ يَذْكُرُونَ أَنَّ الرِّضَا مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ يُحِلُّهُ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ وَ كَيْفَ كَانَ يُحِلُّونَ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ ع الْمُسْكِرَ- وَ هُمْ لَا يَشْرَبُونَ مِنْهُ قَل

“Abu Basir and his friends drank al-Nabidh and they broke it with water. I mentioned it before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he (the Imam) said to me, ‘How can water make intoxicating liquor lawful? Command them not to drink from it in large or small quantities.’ I then said that they say, ‘The approval of the family of M

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ النَّبِيذِ أَ خَمْرٌ هُوَ فَقَالَ ع مَا زَادَ عَلَى التَّرْكِ جَوْدَةً فَهُوَ خَمْرٌ[2].

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about al-Nabidh; if it is wine. He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever upon drinking is more pleasurable than not drinking, it is wine.’”

دَخَلَتْ أُمُّ خَالِدٍ الْعَبْدِيَّةُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَتْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّهُ يَعْتَرِينِي قَرَاقِرُ فِي بَطْنِي- [فَسَأَلَتْهُ عَنْ أَعْلَالِ النِّسَاءِ وَ قَالَتْ‌] وَ قَدْ وَصَفَ لِي أَطِبَّاءُ الْعِرَاقِ النَّبِيذَ بِالسَّوِيقِ وَ قَدْ وَقَفْتُ وَ عَرَفْتُ كَرَاهَتَكَ لَهُ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَ مَا يَمْنَعُكِ عَنْ شُرْبِهِ قَالَتْ قَدْ

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) when the mother of Khalid al-‘Abdiyah visited him (the Imam). She said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. I have a growling condition in my belly [I asked a women with such condition about it and she said] the physicians of Iraq have prescribed for her al

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُبْعَثُ لَهُ الدَّوَاءُ مِنْ رِيحِ الْبَوَاسِيرِ فَيَشْرَبُهُ بِقَدْرِ أُسْكُرُّجَةٍ مِنْ نَبِيذٍ صُلْبٍ لَيْسَ يُرِيدُ بِهِ اللَّذَّةَ وَ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ بِهِ الدَّوَاءَ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَا جُرْعَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمْ يَجْعَلْ فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ مِمَّا حَرَّمَ شِفَاءً وَ لَا دَوَاءً.

“I once wrote to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and asked about a man to whom a medicine for curing hemorrhoid gases is sent to drink in an amount that in the form of hard al-Nabidh makes one drunk. He does not drink it for pleasure but as medicine? He (the Imam) said, ‘No, not even one sip of it is lawful? He (the Imam) then

فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا لَكَ وَ لِمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ رَسُولُهُ ص يَقُولُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثاً عَلَيْكَ بِهَذَا الْمَرِيسِ الَّذِي تَمْرُسُهُ‌[1] بِالْعَشِيِّ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَمْرُسُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْعَشِيِّ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَذَا يَنْفُخُ الْبَطْنَ قَالَ لَهُ فَأَدُلُّكَ عَلَى مَا هُوَ أَنْفَعُ لَكَ مِنْ هَذَا عَلَيْكَ بِالدُّعَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ قَالَ فَقُل

“My father has informed me that he once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a man said to him (the Imam), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, (I suffer from the) gases of hemorrhoids. Nothing suits me except drinking al-Nabidh? He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘What do you ha

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ دَوَاءٍ عُجِنَ بِالْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ فَكَيْفَ أَتَدَاوَى بِهِ إِنَّهُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ شَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ أَوْ لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ إِنَّ أُنَاساً لَيَتَدَاوَوْنَ بِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a medicine which is made in dough with wine. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, by Allah I do not like to look at it, so how will I use it as medicine? It is like the fat of pork or flesh of pork. Why then certain people use it as medicine?”’

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَيَّامَ قَدِمَ الْعِرَاقَ فَقَالَ لِيَ ادْخُلْ عَلَى إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ فَإِنَّهُ شَاكٍ فَانْظُرْ مَا وَجَعُهُ وَ صِفْ لِي شَيْئاً مِنْ وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي يَجِدُ قَالَ فَقُمْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى إِسْمَاعِيلَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي يَجِدُ فَأَخْبَرَنِي بِهِ فَوَصَفْتُ لَهُ دَوَاءً فِيهِ نَبِيذٌ فَقَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ النَّبِيذُ حَرَامٌ وَ إِنَّا أَهْل

“I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), during the days that he had come to Iraq. He (the Imam) told me to visit ’Isma‘il ibn Ja‘far because he complains and see what kind of pain has made him suffer then describe for him (the Imam) the pain he feels. I then left him (the Imam) to see Tsma‘il and asked him about his pai

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ دَوَاءٍ عُجِنَ بِالْخَمْرِ نَكْتَحِلُ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِيمَا حَرَّمَ شِفَاءً.

“A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a medicine which is made into dough from alcohol to be used as Kohl (eyeliner) for the eyes. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not placed cures in things that He has made unlawful.’”

مَنِ اكْتَحَلَ بِمِيلٍ مِنْ مُسْكِرٍ كَحَلَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِمِيلٍ مِنْ نَارٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one uses intoxicating things as eye medicine with an applicator of medicine to the eye Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will apply as such with an applicator of fire.’”

لَا لَيْسَ يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يَسْتَشْفِيَ بِالْحَرَامِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about al-Nabidh which is placed in medicine. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not proper for one to seek cure from unlawful things.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْكُحْلِ يُعْجَنُ بِالنَّبِيذِ أَ يَصْلُحُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَا.

“I once asked my brother, abu al-Hassan ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about kohl made into dough with al- Nabidh; if it is proper. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not proper.’”

سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ دَوَاءٍ يُعْجَنُ بِخَمْرٍ فَقَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ وَ لَا أَشَمَّهُ فَكَيْفَ أَتَدَاوَى بِهِ.

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about a medicine which is made into dough with wine. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not like to look at it or smell it; so why should I use it as medicine?”’

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَيْسَ فِي شُرْبِ النَّبِيذِ[1] تَقِيَّةٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘There is no Taqiyah (maintaining caution because of fear) in the case of al-Nabidh (wine).”’
