كَانَ دَوَاءُ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع السَّعْتَرَ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ يُصَيِّرُ لِلْمَعِدَةِ خَمْلًا كَخَمْلِ الْقَطِيفَةِ[2].

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), has said that the medicine of ’Amir al-Mu’minin was wild thyme, ’Amir al-Mu’minin would say, Thyme becomes fuzz and fluff for the stomach like that of velvet.’”

نَاوَلَ النَّبِيُّ ص- جَعْفَرَ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع خِلَالًا فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا جَعْفَرُ تَخَلَّلْ فَإِنَّهُ مَصْلَحَةٌ لِلْفَمِ أَوْ قَالَ لِلِّثَةِ وَ مَجْلَبَةٌ لِلرِّزْقِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) once gave a toothpick to Ja‘far ibn abu Talib (a.s.), and said, ‘O Ja‘far use a toothpick. It is beneficial for the mouth’ or he said, ‘It is beneficial for the gums and attracts sustenance.’”

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَنِ التَّخَلُّلِ بِالرُّمَّانِ وَ الْآسِ وَ الْقَصَبِ وَ قَالَ ص إِنَّهُنَّ يُحَرِّكْنَ عِرْقَ الْآكِلَةِ.

From him, from the one who reported it, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: ‘Rasool-Allah saww forbade from picking teeth with the pomegranate (stem) and the myrtle (leaf), and the reeds, and said: ‘These stir the vein of the ulcers’.

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the meat that remains between the teeth. He (the Imam) said, ’What is between the front teeth you can eat; but what is between the back teeth you must throw it away.’”

تَغَدَّى عِنْدِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ أُتِيَ بِالْخِلَالِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ‌ مَا حَدُّ هَذَا الْخِلَالِ فَقَالَ يَا فَضْلُ كُلُّ مَا بَقِيَ فِي فَمِكَ فَمَا أَدَرْتَ عَلَيْهِ لِسَانَكَ فَكُلْهُ وَ مَا اسْتَكَنَّ فَأَخْرِجْهُ بِالْخِلَالِ فَأَنْتَ فِيهِ بِالْخِيَارِ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَكَلْتَهُ وَ إِنْ شِئْتَ طَرَحْتَهُ.

“Once, abu al-Hassan (a.s.), had lunch with me. When lunch was complete, toothpicks were brought and I asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what are the limits of toothpicks?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Fadl, whatever remains in your mouth when you turn your tongue on it you can eat it; but wh

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع إِنَّا نَأْكُلُ الْأُشْنَانَ فَقَالَ كَانَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ ضَمَّ شَفَتَيْهِ‌[3] وَ فِيهِ خِصَالٌ تُكْرَهُ إِنَّهُ يُورِثُ السِّلَّ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِمَاءِ الظَّهْرِ وَ يُوهِي الرُّكْبَتَيْنِ‌[4] فَقُلْتُ فَالطِّينُ فَقَالَ كُلُّ طِينٍ حَرَامٌ مِثْلُ الْمَيْتَةِ وَ الدَّمِ وَ لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ إِلَّا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ لَكِنْ

“I once said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), ‘I eat saltwort.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), when washing his hands and mouth (with saltwort) would keep his lips closed. There is a quality in it, which is disliked. It can cause tuberculoses, it takes away the water of the back and weakens the knees.’ I then asked

مَنِ اسْتَنْجَى بِالسُّعْدِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَ غَسَلَ بِهِ فَمَهُ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ عِلَّةٌ فِي فَمِهِ وَ لَمْ يَخَفْ شَيْئاً مِنْ أَرْيَاحِ الْبَوَاسِيرِ.

“If one washes the outlet of his feces and his mouth after food with cyperus no illness will occur in his mouth and hewill have no fear of gases or hemorrhoid.’”

“Al-‘ Abbas ibn Musa took me and commanded to hit my mouth, so my teeth became shaky and I could not chew food. I then saw my father in my dream. There was an old man with him whom I could not recognize. My father, may Allah grant him mercy, said to me to offer greeting of peace to him.’ I then asked, ‘Father, who is h

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلَ ع فِي الْحِجْرِ وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ وَ مَعَهُ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ ضَرَبَتْ عَلَيَّ أَسْنَانِي فَأَخَذْتُ السُّعْدَ فَدَلَكْتُ بِهِ أَسْنَانِي فَنَفَعَنِي ذَلِكَ وَ سَكَنَتْ عَنِّي.

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص‌ الْمَاءُ سَيِّدُ الشَّرَابِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ. - عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِإِسْنَادِهِ‌ مِثْلَهُ.

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘Water is the master of drinks in this world and in the next world.’” A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah through the chain of his narrators has narrated a similar Hadith.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْمَاضِي ع فَنَهَيْتُهُ عَنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ ع وَ مَا بَأْسٌ بِالْمَاءِ وَ هُوَ يُدِيرُ الطَّعَامَ فِي الْمَعِدَةِ وَ يُسَكِّنُ الْغَضَبَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي اللُّبِّ وَ يُطْفِئُ الْمِرَارَ.

“I once visited abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy, Alayhi al-Salam, and I prohibited him from drinking water. He (the Imam) said, ‘What is wrong with water when it turns food in the stomach, calms down the anger, increases marrows (learning ability) and removes bitterness?”’

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَعَا بِتَمْرٍ فَأَكَلَ وَ أَقْبَلَ يَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَمْسَكْتَ عَنِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا آكُلُ التَّمْرَ لِأَسْتَطِيبَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ.

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for dates which he ate and then he kept drinking water. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I wish you refrain from drinking water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I eat dates only to make water taste more delicious.’”

قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ عَجَباً لِمَنْ أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ وَ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَيْفَ لَا تَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once said, ‘I wonder about the one who eats ‘this much,’ making a hand gesture, ‘and does not drink any water on it, how is it that his stomach does not burst.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ هُوَ يُوصِي رَجُلًا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَقْلِلْ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يَمُدُّ كُلَّ دَاءٍ وَ اجْتَنِبِ الدَّوَاءَ مَا احْتَمَلَ بَدَنُكَ الدَّاءَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when giving advice to a man said, ‘Reduce drinking water; it may stretch all illness and refrain from taking medicine as long as your body can take the pain.’”

لَا بَأْسَ بِكَثْرَةِ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ وَ لَا تُكْثِرْ مِنْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ وَ قَالَ أَ رَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ جَمَعَ يَدَيْهِ كِلْتَيْهِمَا لَمْ يَضُمَّهُمَا وَ لَمْ يُفَرِّقْهُمَا ثُمَّ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَانَ يَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ.

‘It is not harmful to drink water after food but do not drink water excessively on things other than food.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Consider, the man who eats this much’ — he brought his hands close to each other and did not join them and did not keep them much apart - ‘then he does not drink water, his stomach may burst.

شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِالنَّهَارِ يُمْرِئُ الطَّعَامَ وَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِاللَّيْلِ يُورِثُ الْمَاءَ الْأَصْفَرَ.

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘During the day drinking water when standing makes the food more pleasant; but drinking water during the night when standing causes al-Safra ’ (yellowness, acidity).”’

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then a

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ.

“Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الشَّرْبَةَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيُدْخِلُهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَيَقْطَعُهُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّي الْإِنَاءَ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فِيهِ وَ يَشْرَبُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّيهِ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘A man only drinks water but Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, for that reason admits him in paradise.’ I then asked, ‘How can that happen, O child of the Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The man drinks water, stops drinking, moves the bowl away when he still has

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking water would say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has given us cool and clear water and not of salty and foul smelling kind, and has not yet questioned us because of our sins.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَشْرَبَ الْمَاءَ بِاللَّيْلِ فَحَرِّكِ الْمَاءَ وَ قُلْ يَا مَاءُ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ وَ مَاءُ فُرَاتٍ يُقْرِءَانِكَ السَّلَامَ.

4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you decide to drink water during the night move the water and say, ‘O water, water of Zamzam says greeting of peace to you and so also does water of Furat.’”
