مَنْ شَرِبَ مُسْكِراً لَمْ تُقْبَلْ مِنْهُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً فَإِنْ مَاتَ فِي الْأَرْبَعِينَ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً وَ إِنْ تَابَ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days. If he dies within the forty days, he dies as one of the ignorant people (pagans) and if he repents (turns to), Allah also turns to him.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days. If he returns to drink again Allah will make him drink from Tinah of Khabal, which he (the Imam) said, is a liquid that comes out of the vagina of fornicators.’”

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘When my father was about to pass away he said to me, ‘My son, our intercession will not apply to those who take their Salat (prayer) lightly and the addicts of these drinks will not be able to come to us at the pond. I then asked, ‘What are these drinks, O father?’ He (the Imam) said,

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one [of you] drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days.’”

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘If one drinks one sip of wine Allah will not accept his Salat (prayer) for seven (days) and if one becomes drunk his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days.’”

“If one drinks wine his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken the truth.’ I then asked, ‘How is it that his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days: no less and no more?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, determined the creation of human being

سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ شَرٌّ أَمْ تَرْكُ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ شُرْبُ الْخَمْرِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَ وَ تَدْرِي لِمَ ذَاكَ قَالَ لَا قَالَ لِأَنَّهُ يَصِيرُ فِي حَالٍ لَا يَعْرِفُ مَعَهَا رَبَّهُ.

“Once a man asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is drinking wine more evil or not performing Salat (prayer)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Drinking wine is more evil.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Do you know why?’ The man said, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said,

مَا عُصِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ أَشَدَّ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْخَمْرِ إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ لَيَدَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْفَرِيضَةَ وَ يَثِبُ عَلَى أُمِّهِ وَ أُخْتِهِ وَ ابْنَتِهِ وَ هُوَ لَا يَعْقِلُ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah is not disobeyed by anything more severely than by drinking wine. One of them may neglect obligatory Salat (prayer), fall on his mother, sister or daughter when drunk and be devoid of reason.’”

قِيلَ لِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِنَّكَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ شُرْبَ الْخَمْرِ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الزِّنَا وَ السَّرِقَةِ فَقَالَ ع نَعَمْ إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الزِّنَا لَعَلَّهُ‌[1] لَا يَعْدُوهُ إِلَى غَيْرِهِ وَ إِنَّ شَارِبَ الْخَمْرِ إِذَا شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ زَنَى وَ سَرَقَ وَ قَتَلَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ تَرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ.

“It was said to ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), ‘You think that drinking wine is a sin which is more serious than fornication and theft.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, because a fornicator perhaps does not extend it to other sins but a wine drinker when he drinks, fornicates, steals and murders a soul which Allah, most Majestic,

كُنْتُ مُبْتَلًى بِالنَّبِيذِ مُعْجَباً بِهِ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَصِفُ لَكَ النَّبِيذَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي بَلْ أَنَا أَصِفُهُ لَكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَذَا نَبِيذُ السِّقَايَةِ بِفِنَاءِ الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لِي لَيْسَ هَكَذَا كَانَتِ السِّقَايَةُ إِنَّمَا السِّقَايَةُ زَمْزَمُ أَ فَتَدْرِي مَنْ أَوَّ

“I once asked for permission from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), for a certain person of our people and he asked him (the Imam) about al-Nabidh.
