Prayer

وَ اللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَطُّ وَ ذَلِكَ أَنِّي سَأَلْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ مَا يُؤْكَلُ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ فَقَالَ كُلْ مَا دَفَّ وَ لَا تَأْكُلْ مَا صَفَّ قُلْتُ الْبَيْضُ فِي الْآجَامِ فَقَالَ مَا اسْتَوَى طَرَفَاهُ‌[1] فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ وَ مَا اخْتَلَفَ طَرَفَاهُ فَكُلْ قُلْتُ فَطَيْرُ الْمَاءِ قَالَ مَا كَانَتْ لَهُ قَانِصَةٌ فَكُلْ وَ مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُ قَانِصَةٌ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ.

“I swear by Allah that I have never seen anyone like abu Ja‘far, Alayhi al-Salam. I once, said to him (the Imam), ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, what is edible of birds?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use for food all that flap their wings in flight, and do not eat what keeps its wings straight in flight.’ I then as

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَبَلِ تَثْقُلُ عِنْدَهُمْ أَلَيَاتُ الْغَنَمِ فَيَقْطَعُونَهَا فَقَالَ حَرَامٌ هِيَ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَنَصْطَبِحُ بِهَا فَقَالَ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهُ يُصِيبُ الْيَدَ وَ الثَّوْبَ وَ هُوَ حَرَامٌ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, people who live in the mountains cut off the tails of their sheep because they become very large.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not lawful (inedible).’ I then asked, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service

كُنْتُ جَالِساً فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ ص إِذَا أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَنْتَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ قُلْتُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ[1] فَقُلْتُ مَا حَاجَتُكَ فَقَالَ لِي أَ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ع فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَمَا حَاجَتُكَ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ هَيَّأْتُ لَهُ أَرْبَعِينَ مَسْأَلَةً أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْهَا فَمَا كَانَ مِنْ حَقٍّ أَخَذْتُهُ وَ مَا كَانَ مِنْ بَاطِلٍ تَرَكْتُهُ قَالَ

“Once I was in the Masjid of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when a man came and offered Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) and asked, ‘Who are you, O servant of Allah?’ I replied, ‘I am a man from al-Kufah.’ I then ask

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لِزُرَارَةَ وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ اللَّبَنُ وَ اللِّبَأُ[3] وَ الْبَيْضَةُ وَ الشَّعْرُ وَ الصُّوفُ وَ الْقَرْنُ وَ النَّابُ وَ الْحَافِرُ وَ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ يُفْصَلُ مِنَ الشَّاةِ وَ الدَّابَّةِ فَهُوَ ذَكِيٌّ وَ إِنْ أَخَذْتَهُ مِنْهَا بَعْدَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَاغْسِلْهُ وَ صَلِّ فِيهِ.

‘The milk, that kind of milk which is drawn first, eggs, hairs, wool, horns, teeth, hooves and everything separated from sheep and the stumper is clean but if you take such things after the animal dies then wash it and perform Salat (prayer) with it.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ الْمَيْتَةُ يُنْتَفَعُ مِنْهَا بِشَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَالَ لَا قُلْتُ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الشَّاةِ إِذَا لَمْ يَنْتَفِعُوا بِلَحْمِهَا أَنْ يَنْتَفِعُوا بِإِهَابِهَا قَالَ تِلْكَ شَاةٌ كَانَتْ لِسَوْدَةَ بِنْتِ زَمْعَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ص وَ كَانَتْ شَاةً مَهْزُولَةً لَا يُنْتَفَعُ بِلَحْمِهَا فَتَرَكُوه

“I once said to abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is it permissible to benefit from dead animals?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not permissible.’ I then said, ‘It is narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family wor

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ الطِّينُ حَرَامٌ كُلُّهُ كَلَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ ثُمَّ مَاتَ فِيهِ لَمْ أُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا طِينَ الْقَبْرِ[2] فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ لِشَهْوَةٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ.

’Eating clay is unlawful in its entirety, like the flesh of pork. If one eats it and dies, I will not perform Salat (prayer) for him except the clay from the grave (of al-Husayn (a.s.) ) in which there is cure for all kinds of illnesses but if one eats it because of strong desire, then there is no cure in it.’”

كَانَ عَبَّادٌ الْبَصْرِيُّ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَأْكُلُ فَوَضَعَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَدَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَ مَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص نَهَى عَنْ هَذَا فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَأَكَلَ ثُمَّ أَعَادَهَا أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَيْضاً فَرَفَعَهَا ثُمَّ أَكَلَ فَأَعَادَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا نَهَى

“‘Abbad al-Basriy was once with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), while eating, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), placed his hand on the ground. ‘Abbad said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well. Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah prohibited this (manner of sitting).’ He (the Imam) raised his hand, ate, and placed his hand on the grou

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَبْلَ الْغَدَاةِ وَ مَعَهُ كِسْرَةٌ قَدْ غَمَسَهَا فِي اللَّبَنِ وَ هُوَ يَأْكُلُ وَ يَمْشِي وَ بِلَالٌ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ ص‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, came out in the morning with a piece of bread in his hand which he had immersed in milk. He (the Messenger of Allah) walked while eating and Bilal said ‘Iqama

لَهُمْ يَقِفُ عَلَيْكُمُ الرَّكْبُ وَ يَسْأَلُونَكُمْ عَنِّي وَ يُبَلِّغُونِّي السَّلَامَ وَ لَا تَعْرِضُونَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْغَدَاءَ لَيَعِزُّ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فِيهِمْ خَلِيلِي جَعْفَرٌ أَنْ يَجُوزُوهُ حَتَّى يَتَغَدَّوْا عِنْدَهُ‌[2].

“During one of his expeditions, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was performing Salat (prayer) when a caravan passed by. They stopped by the companions of the Messenger of Allah and asked them about him (the Messenger of Allah), praye

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَدَعَا بِالْغَدَاءِ فَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ طَعَاماً مَا أَكَلْتُ طَعَاماً قَطُّ أَنْظَفَ مِنْهُ وَ لَا أَطْيَبَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا مِنَ الطَّعَامِ قَالَ يَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ طَعَامَكَ أَوْ قَالَ طَعَامَنَا قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَطْيَبَ مِنْهُ وَ لَا أَنْظَفَ قَطُّ وَ لَكِنِّي ذَكَرْتُ الْآيَةَ الَّتِي فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌ لَتُسْئَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ

“I once visited abu Ja‘far (a.s.). He (the Imam) ordered food. I ate a food with him the like of which I never before had seen in cleanness and elegance. When we finished our food he (the Imam) asked, ‘O abu Khalid, how was your food’ or that he (the Imam) said, ‘Our food?’ I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in s

ذَكَرَ أَصْحَابُنَا قَوْماً فَقُلْتُ وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَتَغَدَّى وَ لَا أَتَعَشَّى إِلَّا وَ مَعِي مِنْهُمُ اثْنَانِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٌ أَوْ أَقَلُّ أَوْ أَكْثَرُ فَقَالَ ع فَضْلُهُمْ عَلَيْكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كَيْفَ ذَا وَ أَنَا أُطْعِمُهُمْ طَعَامِي وَ أُنْفِقُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ مَالِي وَ يَخْدُمُهُمْ خَادِمِي فَقَالَ إِذَا دَخَلُوا عَلَيْكَ دَخَلُوا مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِال

“Our people once mentioned a people and I said, ‘By Allah, I do not take lunch or dinner without one two or three of them or more or less with me.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘Their favor to you is more than your favor to them/ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, how does tha

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي الْخُبْزِ وَ لَا تُفَرِّقْ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ فَلَوْ لَا الْخُبْزُ مَا صُمْنَا وَ لَا صَلَّيْنَا وَ لَا أَدَّيْنَا فَرَائِضَ رَبِّنَا عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘O Lord, grant us blessings in bread and do not separate it from us. If bread had not been available, we could not fast or perform Salat (prayer) or fulfill any of our obligation toward our

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ عَشَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ع بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ فَلَا تَدَعُوهُ فَإِنَّ تَرْكَ الْعَشَاءِ خَرَابُ الْبَدَنِ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Dinner of the Prophets is after al-’Atmah (the time of late evening Salat (prayer)); so you must not ignore dinner because ignoring it leads to neglecting the body.”’

تَعَشَّيْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ الْعَشَاءُ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ عَشَاءُ النَّبِيِّينَ ع.

“I once took dinner with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he said, ‘Dinner after ‘ Isha ’ al- Akhirah (time of late evening Salat (prayer)) is like the dinner of the prophets, ‘Alayhim al-Salam.”’

قَالَ: إِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ عِرْقاً يُقَالُ لَهُ الْعَشَاءُ فَإِنْ تَرَكَ الرَّجُلُ الْعَشَاءَ لَمْ يَزَلْ يَدْعُو عَلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ الْعِرْقُ إِلَى أَنْ يُصْبِحَ يَقُولُ أَجَاعَكَ اللَّهُ كَمَا أَجَعْتَنِي وَ أَظْمَأَكَ اللَّهُ كَمَا أَظْمَأْتَنِي فَلَا يَدَعَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْعَشَاءَ وَ لَوْ بِلُقْمَةٍ مِنْ خُبْزٍ أَوْ شَرْبَةٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ[2].

“Al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘In the body there is a vein called ‘Isha’. If one does not take dinner, it continues praying against him until morning; and it says, ‘May Allah make you hungry just as you kept me hungry, and may Allah make you thirsty just as you kept me thirsty.’ No one of you must neglect taking dinner,

قَالَ: يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ وَ بَعْدَهُ يُذْهِبَانِ الْفَقْرَ قُلْتُ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي يَذْهَبَانِ بِالْفَقْرِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ يَذْهَبَانِ بِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said, ‘O abu Hamzah, Wudu (washing) before and after eating food removes poverty.’ I then said, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, does it remove poverty?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it removes poverty.’”

كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَحَضَرَ وَقْتُ الْعِشَاءِ فَذَهَبْتُ أَقُومُ فَقَالَ اجْلِسْ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَجَلَسْتُ حَتَّى وُضِعَ الْخِوَانُ فَسَمَّى حِينَ وُضِعَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ هَذَا مِنْكَ وَ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ص.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and it became the time of al-‘Isha’ Salat (prayer). I went to say Iqamah. He (the Imam) said, ‘Sit down, O abu ‘Abd Allah.’ I then sat down until food was made available. He (the Imam) mentioned the name of Allah when food was placed for eating. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ تَحْضُرُ وَ قَدْ وُضِعَ الطَّعَامُ قَالَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَوَّلِ الْوَقْتِ يُبْدَأُ بِالطَّعَامِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ قَدْ مَضَى مِنَ الْوَقْتِ شَيْ‌ءٌ وَ تَخَافُ أَنْ تَفُوتَكَ فَتُعِيدَ الصَّلَاةَ فَابْدَأْ بِالصَّلَاةِ.

“I once asked Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about Salat (prayer) for which the time has begun and food is made available. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is the beginning of the time for Salat (prayer), then first begin with food; but if the time has passed and you are afraid of missing Salat (prayer) for which you then must do Qa

تَعَشَّيْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَتَمَةً فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ عَشَائِهِ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ قَالَ هَذَا عَشَائِي وَ عَشَاءُ آبَائِي فَلَمَّا رُفِعَ الْخِوَانُ تَقَمَّمَ‌[1] مَا سَقَطَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أَلْقَاهُ إِلَى فِيهِ.

“Once I had dinner with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), at ‘Atmah (time of late evening Salat (prayer)). When he (the Imam) ended his dinner, he praised Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, and said, ‘This is my (manner of having) dinner and the dinner of my ancestors. When the table-spread was pulled out, he (the Imam) picked

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ هُوَ يَأْكُلُ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَتَتَبَّعُ مِثْلَ السِّمْسِمِ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ مَا سَقَطَ مِنَ الْخِوَانِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ تَتَبَّعُ هَذَا فَقَالَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ هَذَا رِزْقُكَ فَلَا تَدَعْهُ أَمَا إِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he was eating. I saw him searching for pieces of food fallen on the table-spread of the size of sesame seed. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, are you looking for such pieces?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O ‘Abd Allah, it is your sustenance; do

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ أَكْرِمُوا الْخُبْزَ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ عَمِلَ فِيهِ مَا بَيْنَ الْعَرْشِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَ مَا فِيهَا مِنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِدَاكَ الْآبَاءُ وَ الْأُمَّهَاتُ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ نَبِيٌّ فِيمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ دَانِيَالُ وَ إِنَّهُ أَعْطَى صَاحِبَ مِعْبَرٍ رَغِيفاً لِكَيْ يَعْبُرَ بِهِ فَرَمَى صَا

“It is a narration of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) once said, ‘You must treat bread with reverence because from the throne to earth and what is in it, a large number of His c

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِيَّاكُمْ أَنْ تَشَمُّوا الْخُبْزَ[3] كَمَا تَشَمُّهُ السِّبَاعُ فَإِنَّ الْخُبْزَ مُبَارَكٌ أَرْسَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ السَّمَاءَ مِدْرَاراً وَ لَهُ أَنْبَتَ اللَّهُ الْمَرْعَى وَ بِهِ صَلَّيْتُمْ وَ بِهِ صُمْتُمْ وَ بِهِ حَجَجْتُمْ بَيْتَ رَبِّكُمْ.

Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must never smell bread like the beasts do. Bread is blessed and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has sent the sky with rain and because of it He

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ نَهَى عَنْ أَكْلِ الْبُخْتِ وَ عَنْ أَكْلِ لُحُومِ الْحَمَامِ الْمُسَرْوَلَةِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا بَأْسَ بِرُكُوبِ الْبُخْتِ وَ شُرْبِ أَلْبَانِهِنَّ وَ أَكْلِ لُحُومِ الْحَمَامِ الْمُسَرْوَلِ.

“I once said to abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, a man from the companions of abu al-Khattab prohibited eating the meat of camels of Khurasan and the meat of al-Musarwal (pigeons that have feathers on their legs). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to ride camel o

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ ثَلَاثٌ لَا يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ هُنَّ يُسْمِنَّ وَ ثَلَاثٌ يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ هُنَّ يَهْزِلْنَ وَ اثْنَانِ يَنْفَعَانِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ لَا يَضُرَّانِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ اثْنَانِ يَضُرَّانِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ لَا يَنْفَعَانِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَأَمَّا اللَّوَاتِي لَا يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ يُسْمِنَّ اسْتِشْعَارُ الْكَتَّانِ وَ الطِّيبُ وَ النُّورَةُ وَ أَمَّا اللَّوَاتِي يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ يَهْزِلْنَ فَهُوَ اللّ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Use of three things forms fat in one’s body, another three things cause weight loss. Two things benefit harmlessly and two things do all kinds of harm without any benefit. The three that can cause fatness are use of linen, perfume and lime. تَعَشَّيْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بَعْدَ عَتَمَةٍ وَ كَانَ يَتَعَشَّى بَعْدَ عَتَمَةٍ فَأُتِيَ بِخَلٍّ وَ زَيْتٍ وَ لَحْمٍ بَارِدٍ فَجَعَلَ يَنْتِفُ اللَّحْمَ فَيُطْعِمُنِيهِ وَ يَأْكُلُ هُوَ الْخَلَّ وَ الزَّيْتَ وَ يَدَعُ اللَّحْمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا طَعَامُنَا وَ طَعَامُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ع.

“I once had dinner with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), after Salat (prayer) of al-‘Isha’. He (the Imam) would take dinner after Salat (prayer) of al-‘Isha’. Vinegar, oil and cold meat were brought. He began to pull pieces of meat and give them to me but himself eat vinegar and oil and left the meat. He (the Imam) said, ‘This i

الرَّجُلُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَفْتَتِحَ بِالْمِلْحِ فَقَالَ هَذَا مِثْلُ هَذَا يَعْنِي الْخَلَّ وَ إِنَّ الْخَلَّ يَشُدُّ الذِّهْنَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي الْعَقْلِ.

“A man in Khurasan once was with al-Rida’ (a.s.), and the table-spread with food inside, vinegar and salt, was brought to him. He (the Imam) began with vinegar and the man said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, have you commanded us to begin with salt?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is like that’

شَكَا رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ شَاكِي فَقَالَ أَيْنَ هُوَ عَنِ الْمُبَارَكِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ وَ مَا الْمُبَارَكُ قَالَ السُّكَّرُ قُلْتُ أَيُّ السُّكَّرِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ سُلَيْمَانِيُّكُمْ هَذَا.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Azdiy from certain persons of our people in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Once, a man complained before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘I am a complaining man.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What he needs is al-Mubarak.’ I then

لَمَّا تَعَشَّى أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ لِي إِذَا دَخَلْتَ الْخِزَانَةَ فَاطْلُبْ لِي سُكَّرَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَيْسَ ثَمَّ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَقَالَ ادْخُلْ وَيْحَكَ قَالَ فَدَخَلْتُ فَوَجَدْتُ سُكَّرَتَيْنِ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهِمَا.

“After abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), took his dinner, he said, ‘When you go in the storage look for two pieces of sugar for me.’ I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, there is nothing there.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Go there, fie upon you.’ He has said, ‘I went there and found two pieces of sugar an

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ‌ وَ أَنَا أَسْمَعُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي أَجِدُ الضَّعْفَ فِي بَدَنِي فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلَيْكَ بِاللَّبَنِ فَإِنَّهُ يُنْبِتُ اللَّحْمَ وَ يَشُدُّ الْعَظْمَ.

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and a man said to him (the Imam), when I was hearing, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I feel weakness in my body.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must drink milk, it grows flesh and strengthens the bones.’”

أَكَلْنَا مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَأُتِينَا بِلَحْمِ جَزُورٍ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فَأَكَلْنَا ثُمَّ أُتِينَا بِعُسٍّ مِنْ لَبَنٍ‌[1] فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي اشْرَبْ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ فَذُقْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَبَنٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّهَا الْفِطْرَةُ ثُمَّ أُتِينَا بِتَمْرٍ فَأَكَلْنَاهُ.

“We ate with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). There was meat of camel (or sheep) and I thought it was from his house. We ate, and then bowls of milk were brought. He (the Imam) drank from it and said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad drink.’ I tasted it and asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is it milk?’ He

سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنِ الْجُبُنِّ فَقَالَ دَاءٌ لَا دَوَاءَ فِيهِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ بِالْعَشِيِّ دَخَلَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْجُبُنِّ عَلَى الْخِوَانِ فَقَالَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ سَأَلْتُكَ بِالْغَدَاةِ عَنِ الْجُبُنِّ فَقُلْتَ لِي إِنَّهُ هُوَ الدَّاءُ الَّذِي لَا دَوَاءَ لَهُ وَ السَّاعَةَ أَرَاهُ عَلَى الْخِوَانِ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي هُوَ ضَارٌّ بِالْغَدَاةِ نَافِعٌ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَ يَزِيدُ

“A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about cheese. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is an illness for which there is no cure.’ When it was al-‘Isha’ (evening) the man came to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and looked at cheese on the table-spread and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. رَأَيْتُ دَايَةَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع تُلْقِمُهُ الْأَرُزَّ وَ تَضْرِبُهُ عَلَيْهِ فَغَمَّنِي مَا رَأَيْتُهُ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لِي أَحْسَبُكَ غَمَّكَ مَا رَأَيْتَ مِنْ دَايَةِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى قُلْتُ لَهُ نَعَمْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ لِي نِعْمَ الطَّعَامُ الْأَرُزُّ يُوَسِّعُ الْأَمْعَاءَ وَ يَقْطَعُ الْبَوَاسِيرَ وَ إِنَّا لَنَغْبِطُ أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ بِأَكْلِهِمُ الْأَرُزّ

“I once saw the nurse of abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s.), feed him rice with morsels and threw it on him. It made me upset and I went to see abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), who said to me, ‘I think what you have seen from the nurse of abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s.), has made you upset.’ I replied, ‘Yes, I pray to Allah to keep my soul i

أَكَلْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ‌ ع مَرَقَةً بِعَدَسٍ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الْعَدَسَ قَدَّسَ عَلَيْهِ ثَمَانُونَ نَبِيّاً قَالَ كَذَبُوا لَا وَ اللَّهِ وَ لَا عِشْرُونَ نَبِيّاً. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّهُ يُرِقُّ الْقَلْبَ وَ يُسْرِعُ الدَّمْعَةَ.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ تَمْرٌ بَرْنِيٌّ وَ هُوَ مُجِدٌّ فِي أَكْلِهِ يَأْكُلُهُ بِشَهْوَةٍ فَقَالَ لِي يَا سُلَيْمَانُ ادْنُ فَكُلْ قَالَ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ فَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ وَ أَنَا أَقُولُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي أَرَاكَ تَأْكُلُ هَذَا التَّمْرَ بِشَهْوَةٍ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ إِنِّي لَأُحِبُّهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ لِمَ ذَاكَ قَالَ لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ تَمْرِيّاً وَ كَانَ

“Once I visited abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), and there were barniy dates in front of him. He (the Imam) seemed assiduous in eating it with zest. He (the Imam) said, ‘O Sulayman come close and eat.’ I then went close and ate thereof saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I see you eat it

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَنْ أَكَلَ رُمَّانَةً أَنَارَتْ قَلْبَهُ وَ مَنْ أَنَارَ اللَّهُ قَلْبَهُ بَعُدَ الشَّيْطَانُ عَنْهُ قُلْتُ أَيَّ الرُّمَّانِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ سُورَانِيَّكُمْ هَذَا[3].

‘If one eats pomegranate his heart becomes bright and whosoever’s heart Allah brightens Satan is kept away from him.’ I then asked, ‘What kind of pomegranate is this? I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is the one from Sur (name of a place near Baghdad), this one?”

بَعَثَنِي الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ عُمَرَ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِلَطَفٍ‌[5]- فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ صَائِفٍ وَ قُدَّامَهُ طَبَقٌ فِيهِ تُفَّاحٌ أَخْضَرُ فَوَ اللَّهِ إِنْ صَبَرْتُ أَنْ‌[1] قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَ تَأْكُلُ مِنْ هَذَا وَ النَّاسُ يَكْرَهُونَهُ فَقَالَ لِي كَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَزَلْ يَعْرِفُنِي وُعِكْتُ‌[2] فِي لَيْلَتِي هَذِهِ فَبَعَثْتُ فَأُتِيتُ بِهِ فَأَكَلْتُهُ وَ هُوَ يَقْلَعُ الْحُمَّ

“Al-Mufaddal ibn ’Umar once sent me to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), for a favor (from the Imam). I went to him (the Imam) on a summer day and before him there was a tray with green apples in it and I by Allah could hardly wait until I asked saying, ’I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, do you eat this w

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ هُوَ بِمَكَّةَ وَ هُوَ يُقَشِّرُ مَوْزاً وَ يُطْعِمُهُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَذَا الْمَوْلُودُ الْمُبَارَكُ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا يَحْيَى هَذَا الْمَوْلُودُ الَّذِي لَمْ يُولَدْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ مِثْلُهُ مَوْلُودٌ أَعْظَمُ بَرَكَةً عَلَى شِيعَتِنَا مِنْهُ.

كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَمَالَ عَلَى الْبَقْلِ وَ امْتَنَعْتُ أَنَا مِنْهُ لِعِلَّةٍ كَانَتْ بِي فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ يَا حَنَانُ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع لَمْ يُؤْتَ بِطَبَقٍ إِلَّا وَ عَلَيْهِ بَقْلٌ قُلْتُ وَ لِمَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ لِأَنَّ قُلُوبَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ خَضِرَةٌ وَ هِيَ تَحِنُّ إِلَى أَشْكَالِهَا.

“Once I was with abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), on the table-spread of food and he (the Imam) ate fresh herbs but I abstained because of a certain illness. He (the Imam) turned to me and said, ‘O Hanan, did you not know that whenever a package of food was brought to ’Amir al-Mu’minin it neccessarily had herbs in it?’ I then a

مَا تَضْلَعُ‌[2] الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْجِرْجِيرِ بَعْدَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ فَبَاتَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ إِلَّا وَ نَفْسُهُ تُنَازِعُهُ إِلَى الْجُذَامِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one fills himself up with watercress after performing Salat (prayer) of al-‘Isha’ he will spend the night while his soul invites him to leprosy. 5 ”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع يَقُولُ‌ أَكْلُ الْجَزَرِ يُسَخِّنُ الْكُلْيَتَيْنِ وَ يَنْصِبُ الذَّكَرَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كَيْفَ آكُلُهُ وَ لَيْسَ لِي أَسْنَانٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي مُرِ الْجَارِيَةَ تَسْلُقُهُ وَ كُلْهُ‌[1].

’Eating carrot warms up the kidneys and causes erection.’ He (the narrator) has said that he asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, how should I eat it when I have no teeth?’ He (the Imam) said, ’Order the girl to boil it, then eat.’”

لَمَّا أَنْ قَضَيْتُ نُسُكِي مَرَرْتُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ هُوَ بِيَنْبُعَ فَأَتَيْتُ يَنْبُعَ فَقَالَ لِي يَا حَسَنُ مَشَيْتَ إِلَى هَاهُنَا قُلْتُ نَعَمْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ وَ لَا أَرَاكَ فَقَالَ ع إِنِّي أَكَلْتُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَقْلَةِ يَعْنِي الثُّومَ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَتَنَحَّى عَنْ مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص.

“I completed the acts of al-Hajj or ‘Umrah, I passed by al-Madinah and asked about abu Ja’far (a.s.). He said that he (the Imam) is in Yanbu’. I then went there and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Hassan, have you come walking here?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I disliked leaving

تَغَدَّى عِنْدِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ أُتِيَ بِالْخِلَالِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ‌ مَا حَدُّ هَذَا الْخِلَالِ فَقَالَ يَا فَضْلُ كُلُّ مَا بَقِيَ فِي فَمِكَ فَمَا أَدَرْتَ عَلَيْهِ لِسَانَكَ فَكُلْهُ وَ مَا اسْتَكَنَّ فَأَخْرِجْهُ بِالْخِلَالِ فَأَنْتَ فِيهِ بِالْخِيَارِ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَكَلْتَهُ وَ إِنْ شِئْتَ طَرَحْتَهُ.

“Once, abu al-Hassan (a.s.), had lunch with me. When lunch was complete, toothpicks were brought and I asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what are the limits of toothpicks?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Fadl, whatever remains in your mouth when you turn your tongue on it you can eat it; but wh

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَعَا بِتَمْرٍ فَأَكَلَ وَ أَقْبَلَ يَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَمْسَكْتَ عَنِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا آكُلُ التَّمْرَ لِأَسْتَطِيبَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ.

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for dates which he ate and then he kept drinking water. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I wish you refrain from drinking water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I eat dates only to make water taste more delicious.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ.

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then a

اشْتَكَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ إِخْوَانِنَا بِمَكَّةَ حَتَّى سَقَطَ لِلْمَوْتِ فَلَقِينَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ يَا مُصَادِفُ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ قُلْتُ تَرَكْتُهُ بِالْمَوْتِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ أَمَا لَوْ كُنْتُ مَكَانَكُمْ لَسَقَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمِيزَابِ فَطَلَبْنَا عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا ارْتَفَعَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَأَرْعَدَتْ وَ أَبْرَقَتْ وَ أَمْطَرَ

We met abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), on the way and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Musadif, how is so and so doing?’ I replied, ‘I left him for death, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Were I in your place I wo

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ بَعْدَ أَنْ حَرَّمَهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى لِسَانِي فَلَيْسَ بِأَهْلٍ أَنْ يُزَوَّجَ إِذَا خَطَبَ وَ لَا يُصَدَّقَ إِذَا حَدَّثَ وَ لَا يُشَفَّعَ إِذَا شَفَعَ وَ لَا يُؤْتَمَنَ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ فَمَنِ ائْتَمَنَهُ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ فَأَكَلَهَا أَوْ ضَيَّعَهَا فَلَيْسَ لِلَّذِي ائْتَمَنَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ يَأْجُرَهُ وَ لَا يُخْلِفَ عَلَيْهِ- وَ قَالَ أَبُ

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one drinks wine after Allah, most High, has made it unlawful through my tongue, he then does not deserve to be married if he proposes marriage. He is not considered truthful if he speaks

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَا أُصَلِّي عَلَى غَرِيقِ خَمْرٍ[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I do not perform Salat (prayer) on the dead body of one drowned in wine (a wine drinker).”’

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ يَا يُونُسَ بْنَ ظَبْيَانَ أَبْلِغْ عَطِيَّةَ عَنِّي أَنَّهُ مَنْ شَرِبَ جُرْعَةً مِنْ خَمْرٍ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ مَلَائِكَتُهُ وَ رُسُلُهُ وَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَإِنْ شَرِبَهَا حَتَّى يَسْكَرَ مِنْهَا نُزِعَ رُوحُ الْإِيمَانِ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ وَ رَكِبَتْ فِيهِ رُوحٌ سَخِيفَةٌ خَبِيثَةٌ مَلْعُونَةٌ فَيَتْرُكُ الصَّلَاةَ فَإِذَا تَرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ عَيَّرَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَ قَا

مَنْ شَرِبَ مُسْكِراً انْحَبَسَتْ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ إِنْ مَاتَ فِي الْأَرْبَعِينَ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً فَإِنْ تَابَ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is withheld for forty days, and if he dies within the forty days he dies like the people of the time of ignorance, but if he repents (turns to) Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, also turns to him.’”
