قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يُكْرَهُ لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَقُولَ حَيَّاكَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ يَسْكُتَ حَتَّى يَتْبَعَهَا بِالسَّلَامِ.
“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘It is undesirable for a man to say, “May Allah keep you living,” then remain silent without offering the greeting of peace thereafter.’”
يُسَلِّمُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى الْكَبِيرِ وَ الْمَارُّ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ وَ الْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِيرِ.
“The younger ones offer greetings of peace to the elders, passing by those who are stationary and fewer people to those of a greater number.”
الْقَلِيلُ يَبْدَءُونَ الْكَثِيرَ بِالسَّلَامِ وَ الرَّاكِبُ يَبْدَأُ الْمَاشِيَ وَ أَصْحَابُ الْبِغَالِ يَبْدَءُونَ أَصْحَابَ الْحَمِيرِ وَ أَصْحَابُ الْخَيْلِ يَبْدَءُونَ أَصْحَابَ الْبِغَالِ.
“Those fewer in number initiate greetings of peace to those of a greater number, one riding to the one walking, people riding mules to those riding donkeys and those riding horses offer greeting of peace to those riding on mules.”
سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ يُسَلِّمُ الرَّاكِبُ عَلَى الْمَاشِي وَ الْمَاشِي عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ وَ إِذَا لَقِيَتْ جَمَاعَةٌ جَمَاعَةً سَلَّمَ الْأَقَلُّ عَلَى الْأَكْثَرِ وَ إِذَا لَقِيَ وَاحِدٌ جَمَاعَةً سَلَّمَ الْوَاحِدُ عَلَى الْجَمَاعَةِ.
“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘A person riding should offer greetings of peace to the one walking, the one walking to the one stationary and sitting. On meeting a group the one in smaller numbers offers the greeting of peace to that in greater numbers and one person offers greetings of peace to a group.”’
يُسَلِّمُ الرَّاكِبُ عَلَى الْمَاشِي وَ الْقَائِمُ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ.
“A person riding should offer greetings of peace to the one walking on foot and the one standing should offer greetings of peace to the one sitting.”
إِذَا كَانَ قَوْمٌ فِي مَجْلِسٍ ثُمَّ سَبَقَ قَوْمٌ فَدَخَلُوا فَعَلَى الدَّاخِلِ أَخِيراً إِذَا دَخَلَ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ.
“If two groups attend the same meeting, the group entering last should offer greetings of peace to those who have entered first.”
إِذَا مَرَّتِ الْجَمَاعَةُ بِقَوْمٍ أَجْزَأَهُمْ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ وَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ وَ هُمْ جَمَاعَةٌ أَجْزَأَهُمْ أَنْ يَرُدَّ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ.
“If one person from a group passing by another group offers the greeting of peace it is sufficient for all and so also is for an answer if only one person from the stationary group responds.”
إِذَا سَلَّمَ الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ.
“If one person offers the greeting of peace for a whole group it is considered enough and sufficient.”
إِذَا سَلَّمَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَاحِدٌ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ وَ إِذَا رَدَّ وَاحِدٌ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ.
“If one person from a group offers the greeting of peace it is sufficient for all and so also is for an answer if only one person from the stationary group responds.”
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَ يَرْدُدْنَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ وَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَى الشَّابَّةِ مِنْهُنَّ وَ يَقُولُ أَتَخَوَّفُ أَنْ يُعْجِبَنِي صَوْتُهَا فَيَدْخُلَ عَلَيَّ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا أَطْلُبُ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ.
“The Messenger of Allah would offer greeting of peace to women and they would respond to him. Amir al-Mu’ minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) would offer greeting of peace to women but he disliked offering it to the young women. He would say, ‘I fear their voice may attract me and a feeling may cause me more harm than the
دَخَلَ يَهُودِيٌّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ عَائِشَةُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ[1] فَقَالَ- رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَلَيْكُمْ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ كَمَا رَدَّ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَرَدَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كَمَا رَدَّ عَلَى صَاحِبَيْهِ فَغَضِبَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقَالَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَ الْغَضَبُ وَ اللَّعْنَةُ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْيَهُودِ
“Once, a Jewish person went in the presence of the Messenger of Allah while ‘A’ishah was with him. The Jewish person said, ‘Sam ‘Alaykum instead of ‘ Salamun ‘Alaykum. ’ The Messenger of Allah said, Alaykum. ’ Then another Jewish person came and said the same thing as the one before and the Messenger of Allah responded
قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع لَا تَبْدَءُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ بِالتَّسْلِيمِ وَ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا وَ عَلَيْكُمْ[1].
“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Do not initiate the offering of the greeting of peace to people of the Book, but if they offered just say, “wa ‘Alaykum’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الْيَهُودِيِّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيِّ وَ الْمُشْرِكِ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَى الرَّجُلِ وَ هُوَ جَالِسٌ كَيْفَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ يَقُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ.
“Once I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about Jewish, Christians and pagans’ greetings to one sitting, how should he respond? The Imam said, ‘He will say, ‘ ‘Alaykum’”
إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ الْيَهُودِيُّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيُّ وَ الْمُشْرِكُ فَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ.
“When a Jew, Christian or a pagan greets you with peace just say, ‘ ‘Alayka’ meaning, ‘the same to you.’”
أَقْبَلَ أَبُو جَهْلِ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَ مَعَهُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَى أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ ابْنَ أَخِيكَ قَدْ آذَانَا وَ آذَى آلِهَتَنَا فَادْعُهُ وَ مُرْهُ فَلْيَكُفَّ عَنْ آلِهَتِنَا وَ نَكُفُّ عَنْ إِلَهِهِ قَالَ فَبَعَثَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَدَعَاهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ص لَمْ يَرَ فِي الْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُشْرِكاً[2] فَقَالَ السَّلامُ عَلى مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدى ثُمّ
“Once abu Jahl along with a people from Quraysh went to abu Talib and said, ‘Your cousin has offended us and has harmed our idols, call him and command him to stop bothering our gods and we will stop bothering his Lord.’ “The Imam said, ‘Abu Talib sent for the Messenger of Allah. He was called and he came. He did not s
تَقُولُ فِي الرَّدِّ عَلَى الْيَهُودِيِّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيِّ سَلَامٌ[1].
‘‘In response to a Jew or Christian You should say, ‘ Salam ’, meaning peace be upon us or whoever deserves it.”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع أَ رَأَيْتَ إِنِ احْتَجْتُ إِلَى مُتَطَبِّبٍ وَ هُوَ نَصْرَانِيٌّ أُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ وَ أَدْعُو لَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّهُ لَا يَنْفَعُهُ دُعَاؤُكَ.
‘Once I asked abu al-Hassan Musa (a.s.) ‘If I needed to visit a Christian physician, can I offer the greeting of peace and pray for him?’ The Imam said, ‘Yes, but your prayer will not benefit him.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع أَ رَأَيْتَ إِنِ احْتَجْتُ إِلَى الطَّبِيبِ وَ هُوَ نَصْرَانِيٌّ أَنْ أُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ وَ أَدْعُوَ لَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّهُ لَا يَنْفَعُهُ دُعَاؤُكَ.
“Once I asked abu al-Hassan Musa (a.s.) ‘If 1 needed to visit a Christian physician, can I offer him the greeting of peace and pray for him?’ The Imam said, ‘Yes, but your prayer will not benefit him.’”
قِيلَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع كَيْفَ أَدْعُو لِلْيَهُودِيِّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيِّ قَالَ تَقُولُ لَهُ بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا.
“It was asked from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘How do I pray for a Jew or a Christian?’ He had said, ‘Say, “May Allah grant you blessing in this world.’””
مِنْ وَرَاءِ الثَّوْبِ فَإِنْ صَافَحَكَ بِيَدِهِ فَاغْسِلْ يَدَكَ.
“About shaking hands with a Jew or a Christian he had said, ‘Shake hands with them from behind clothes and if you shook their hand without clothes then you must wash your hands.”’
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَلْقَى الذِّمِّيَّ فَيُصَافِحُنِي قَالَ امْسَحْهَا بِالتُّرَابِ وَ بِالْحَائِطِ قُلْتُ فَالنَّاصِبَ قَالَ اغْسِلْهَا.
“I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (as), ‘What should I do if I meet a tax paying non-Muslim and he shakes my hand?’ He replied, ‘Wipe it with soil or against a wall.’ I asked, ‘What about one who is a nasibi (someone who hates the Ahlul Bayt)?‘ He said, ‘Wash it (your hand).”’
يَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ وَ لَا يَتَوَضَّأُ.
“About a man who had shaken hand with Majusi (Zoroastrian), the Imam said, ‘He must wash it but he does not need to perform wuzu again.’”
سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْحَاجَةُ إِلَى الْمَجُوسِيِّ أَوْ إِلَى الْيَهُودِيِّ أَوْ إِلَى النَّصْرَانِيِّ أَوْ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَامِلًا أَوْ دِهْقَاناً مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ أَهْلِ أَرْضِهِ فَيَكْتُبُ إِلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ فِي الْحَاجَةِ الْعَظِيمَةِ أَ يَبْدَأُ بِالْعِلْجِ[1] وَ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ فِي كِتَابِهِ وَ إِنَّمَا يَصْنَعُ ذَلِكَ لِكَيْ تُقْضَى حَاجَتُهُ قَالَ أَمَّا أَنْ تَبْدَأَ بِ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) was asked about the case of a man who needs help from a Majusi (Zoroastrian) or a Jew, a Christian or that he is a farm employee of the influential people of his land and writes to him for an important need, should he begin by offering greetings of peace to the chief in writing, knowing that he d
لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا فَعَلَ لِاخْتِيَارِ الْمَنْفَعَةِ.
“The Imam was asked about the case of a man who writes to a chief officer of Majus and begins with the name of the chief before his own name. The Imam said, ‘It is permissible if it is for seeking favors.’”
كَانَ عِنْدَهُ قَوْمٌ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ إِذْ ذَكَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا فَوَقَعَ فِيهِ[3] وَ شَكَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَّى لَكَ بِأَخِيكَ كُلِّهِ وَ أَيُّ الرِّجَالِ الْمُهَذَّبُ[4].
“Once in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) there were people speaking to him. One man mentioned the name of another man and he began to criticize him and complained against him. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) asked, ‘Where from can you have a perfect brother? Who is among man, free and pure of faults and flaws?”’
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا تُفَتِّشِ النَّاسَ فَتَبْقَى بِلَا صَدِيقٍ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Do not be a spy against people; you will remain without friends.’”
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ انْظُرْ قَلْبَكَ فَإِذَا أَنْكَرَ صَاحِبَكَ فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمَا قَدْ أَحْدَثَ[1].
“I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Look in your heart, if it dislikes your friend, one of you has done something (wrong).”’
سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَسْأَلُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَقُولُ أَوَدُّكَ فَكَيْفَ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ يَوَدُّنِي فَقَالَ امْتَحِنْ قَلْبَكَ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَوَدُّهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَوَدُّكَ.
“I heard a man asking Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘A man says he loves me. How can I know if he really loves me?’ The Imam said, ‘Test your own heart. If you love him, he also loves you.’”
سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنَا مَسْعَدَةُ بْنُ الْيَسَعِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ لَأُحِبُّكَ فَأَطْرَقَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ صَدَقْتَ يَا أَبَا بِشْرٍ[2] سَلْ قَلْبَكَ عَمَّا لَكَ فِي قَلْبِي مِنْ حُبِّكَ فَقَدْ أَعْلَمَنِي قَلْبِي عَمَّا لِي فِي قَلْبِكَ.
“Once I said to abu Ja’far (a.s.) ‘By Allah, I love you.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.) looked down for a short while then he raised his head and said, ‘O abu Bishr you have spoken the truth. Ask your heart about what my heart has of your love. My heart has informed me about what your heart has for me.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع لَا تَنْسَنِي مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ قَالَ أَ وَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي أَنْسَاكَ قَالَ فَتَفَكَّرْتُ فِي نَفْسِي وَ قُلْتُ هُوَ يَدْعُو لِشِيعَتِهِ وَ أَنَا مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ قُلْتُ لَا لَا تَنْسَانِي قَالَ وَ كَيْفَ عَلِمْتَ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي مِنْ شِيعَتِكَ وَ إِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُو لَهُمْ فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلِمْتَ بِشَيْءٍ غَيْرِ هَذَا قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَعْلَمَ مَا لَكَ عِنْدِي فَانْ
“Once I said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.) ‘Do not forget me in your prayers.’ The Imam asked, ‘How do you know I forget you?’ I (the narrator) then thought in my soul and said to myself that he (Imam) prays for his Shi’a (followers) and I am a Shi’a. I then said to the Imam, ‘I know, you do not forget me in your prayers.’ T
انْظُرْ قَلْبَكَ فَإِنْ أَنْكَرَ صَاحِبَكَ فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمَا قَدْ أَحْدَثَ.
“See your heart. If it dislikes your friend then notice that one of you have done something newly wrong.’”
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لِلْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ وَ يَعُودَهُ إِذَا مَرِضَ وَ يَنْصَحَ لَهُ إِذَا غَابَ وَ يُسَمِّتَهُ[1] إِذَا عَطَسَ يَقُولَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَ يَقُولَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَيُجِيبَهُ فَيَقُولَ لَهُ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَ يُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ وَ يُجِيبَهُ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَ يَتْبَعَهُ إِذَا مَاتَ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘One of the rights of a Muslim on his brother (in belief) is that on meeting him he should offer him the greeting of peace, visit him when he is ill, look after his interests in his absence and when sneezing one should say: “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, who has no pa
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَسَمِّتُوهُ وَ لَوْ كَانَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ جَزِيرَةٍ وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى وَ لَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْبَحْرِ.
“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘You should respond to one’s sneezing even if he is behind the island. In another Hadith it is said, ‘Even if it (response) is from behind the ocean.’”
كُنَّا جُلُوساً عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَمَا رَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ شَيْئاً حَتَّى ابْتَدَأَ هُوَ فَقَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ أَلَّا سَمَّتُّمْ إِنَّ مِنْ حَقِّ الْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ أَنْ يَعُودَهُ إِذَا اشْتَكَى وَ أَنْ يُجِيبَهُ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَهُ إِذَا مَاتَ وَ أَنْ يُسَمِّتَهُ إِذَا عَطَسَ.
“Once we were in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) when a man sneezed and no one from the group responded until he (the Imam) initiated saying: ‘Glory belongs to Allah, why did no one respond? It is of the rights of a Muslim upon the Muslim to visit him when he is ill, accept his invitation, attend his funeral and r
كُنْتُ عِنْدَ الرِّضَا ع فَعَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ عَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ عَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ وَ قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِذَا عَطَسَ مِثْلُكَ[2] نَقُولُ لَهُ كَمَا يَقُولُ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ أَوْ كَمَا نَقُولُ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَ لَيْسَ تَقُولُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ ارْحَمْ مُحَمَّد
“Once I was in the presence of al-Rida (a.s.) and he sneezed. I said, ‘May Allah grant you al-Salat (favors).’ He sneezed again, and said, ‘May Allah grant you favors.’ He sneezed again and I said, ‘May Allah grant you favors.’ I then said, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, if one like you (Imam) would
سَمِعْتُ الرِّضَا ع يَقُولُ التَّثَاؤُبُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ[2] وَ الْعَطْسَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.
“Once I heard al-Rida (a.s.) saying, ‘Yawning is from Satan and sneezing is from Allah.”
سَأَلْتُ الْعَالِمَ ع عَنِ الْعَطْسَةِ وَ مَا الْعِلَّةُ فِي الْحَمْدِ لِلَّهِ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ نِعَماً عَلَى عَبْدِهِ فِي صِحَّةِ بَدَنِهِ وَ سَلَامَةِ جَوَارِحِهِ وَ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ يَنْسَى ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَ إِذَا نَسِيَ أَمَرَ اللَّهُ الرِّيحَ فَتَجَاوَزَ[3] فِي بَدَنِهِ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُهَا مِنْ أَنْفِهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَيَكُونُ حَمْدُهُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ شُكْر

كُنَّا عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَأَحْصَيْتُ فِي الْبَيْتِ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا فَعَطَسَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَمَا تَكَلَّمَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَلَّا تُسَمِّتُونَ أَلَّا تُسَمِّتُونَ مِنْ حَقِ[4] الْمُؤْمِنِ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ إِذَا مَرِضَ أَنْ يَعُودَهُ وَ إِذَا مَاتَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ جَنَازَتَهُ وَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَنْ يُسَمِّتَهُ أَوْ قَالَ يُشَمِّتَهُ وَ إِذَا دَعَاهُ أَن
“Once we were in the presence of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). I counted that the people present were fourteen. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) sneezed and no one from the people said anything. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) then asked, ‘You did not respond. Why did you not respond? It is of the rights of a believing person on the other believi
قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع نِعْمَ الشَّيْءُ الْعَطْسَةُ تَنْفَعُ فِي الْجَسَدِ وَ تُذَكِّرُ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قُلْتُ إِنَّ عِنْدَنَا قَوْماً يَقُولُونَ لَيْسَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فِي الْعَطْسَةِ نَصِيبٌ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانُوا كَاذِبِينَ فَلَا نَالَهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ مُحَمَّدٍ ص.
“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘Sneezing is a good thing. It benefits the body and reminds one of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy.’ I then said, ‘Nearby to us there are people who say, “There is nothing in sneezing for the Messenger of Allah.” The Imam said, ‘If they are lying, the intercession of Muhammad will n
عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَلَمْ يُسَمِّتْهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ قَالَ نَقَصَنَا حَقَّنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* وَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَسَمَّتَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ.
“Once a man sneezed in the presence of abu Ja’far (a.s.) and he said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.) did not respond and said, ‘Our rights are reduced.’ Then he said, ‘Whenever anyone of you sneezes he should say, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds and Allah has granted al- Salat (favors
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَكْرَهُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ مَوَاطِنَ عِنْدَ الْعَطْسَةِ وَ عِنْدَ الذَّبِيحَةِ وَ عِنْدَ الْجِمَاعِ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا لَهُمْ وَيْلَهُمْ نَافَقُوا لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ.
“Once I said to abu Ja’far (a.s.) ‘People do not like saying, “O Allah grant al-Salat, (favors) upon Muhammad and the AM al-Bay (family of Muhammad),” in three conditions: when sneezing, when slaughtering an animal and at the time of having intimate relations with their spouses.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.) said, ‘What is wrong
كَانَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذَا عَطَسَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ قَالَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَ يَرْحَمُكُمْ وَ إِذَا عَطَسَ عِنْدَهُ إِنْسَانٌ قَالَ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.
“Whenever Abu Ja’ far (a.s.) would sneeze in response it was said, ‘May Allah be kind to you,’ and he would say, ‘May Allah grant you forgiveness and be kind to you. ’ When anyone sneezed in his presence he would say, ‘May Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, grant you forgiveness.’”
عَطَسَ غُلَامٌ لَمْ يَبْلُغِ الْحُلُمَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ص بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ.
“A young boy who had not yet reached puberty once sneezed in the presence of the Holy Prophet and said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’ The Holy Prophet said, ‘May Allah place blessings in you.’”
إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَ إِذَا سَمَّتَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَ إِذَا رَدَدْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَ لَنَا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص سُئِلَ عَنْ آيَةٍ أَوْ شَيْءٍ فِيهِ ذِكْرُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ كُلُّمَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ فَهُوَ حَسَنٌ[1].
“When a man sneezes he should say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah [Lord of the worlds] who has no partner. ’ In response one should say, ‘May Allah grant you blessings.’ If it is repeated then one should say, ‘May Allah forgive you and forgive us.’ The Messenger of Allah was asked if there was a special verse of the Holy
عَطَسَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* ثُمَّ جَعَلَ إِصْبَعَهُ عَلَى أَنْفِهِ فَقَالَ رَغِمَ أَنْفِي لِلَّهِ رَغْماً دَاخِراً.
“Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) sneezed and said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds,’ then he placed his finger over his nose and said, ‘Humble is my nose before Allah with complete humility.’”
قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ*- عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ لَمْ يَجِدْ وَجَعَ الْأُذُنَيْنِ وَ الْأَضْرَاسِ.
“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever upon sneezing says, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, in all conditions, will not suffer from pain in his ears and teeth.”’”
فِي وَجَعِ الْأَضْرَاسِ وَ وَجَعِ الْآذَانِ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ مَنْ يَعْطِسُ فَابْدَءُوهُ بِالْحَمْدِ.
“For a tooth and earache when you hear a person sneeze, you should first say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’”
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَنْ سَمِعَ عَطْسَةً فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ صَلَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ص وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ لَمْ يَشْتَكِ عَيْنَيْهِ وَ لَا ضِرْسَهُ[1] ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنْ سَمِعْتَهَا فَقُلْهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَ بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَهُ الْبَحْرُ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘If one hears a person’s sneezing and praises Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, and asks Allah to grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad and the Ahl al-Bayt (family of Muhammad), he will not suffer from a toothache or eye trouble.’ The Imam then said, ‘When you hear it (sneezing)
عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ نَصْرَانِيٌّ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ هَدَاكَ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقُولُوا يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَقَالُوا لَهُ إِنَّهُ نَصْرَانِيٌّ فَقَالَ لَا يَهْدِيهِ اللَّهُ حَتَّى يَرْحَمَهُ.
“Once a Christian man sneezed in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) and the people said, ‘May Allah guide you.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) said, ‘Say, “May Allah grant you mercy.’” They said, ‘He is a Christian.’ The Imam said, ‘Allah will not guide him until He grants him mercy.’”
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا عَطَسَ الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ ثُمَّ سَكَتَ لِعِلَّةٍ تَكُونُ بِهِ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عَنْهُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* فَإِنْ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكَ قَالَ وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْعُطَاسُ لِلْمَرِيضِ دَلِيلُ الْعَافِيَةِ وَ رَاحَةٌ لِلْبَدَنِ.
