سَأَلْتُ الشَّيْخَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَسْتَيْقِظُ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ وَ لَمْ يَبُلْ أَ يُدْخِلُ يَدَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْسِلَهَا قَالَ لَا لِأَنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي أَيْنَ كَانَتْ يَدُهُ فَلْيَغْسِلْهَا.

“I once asked the Shaykh, ’Is it permissible for a man who wakes up to place his hand in the water container before urinating?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘No, he cannot do so because he does not know where his hands may have been. He must wash them first.’”

فِي الرَّجُلِ الْجُنُبِ يَسْهُو فَيَغْمِسُ يَدَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْسِلَهَا أَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ أَصَابَ يَدَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Can a man immerse his hands in the water container before washing them?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, he can do so, provided they have not touched any unclean substance.’”

“I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who urinates but does not touch anything, must he wash it with water? He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, if he has experienced sexual relation.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘Once, because of urination, twice because of defecation and three times because of sexual relation.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الرَّجُلُ يَضَعُ الْكُوزَ الَّذِي يَغْرِفُ بِهِ مِنَ الْحُبِّ فِي مَكَانٍ قَذِرٍ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُهُ الْحُبَّ قَالَ يَصُبُّ مِنَ الْمَاءِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَكُفٍّ ثُمَّ يَدْلُكُ الْكُوزَ[1].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a mug with which one takes water from a large water container but one places it on a dirty place, then immerses it in the large water container. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must pour water on the mug three times and rub it.’”

فِي مِيزَابَيْنِ سَالا أَحَدُهُمَا بَوْلٌ وَ الْآخَرُ مَاءُ الْمَطَرِ فَاخْتَلَطَا فَأَصَابَ ثَوْبَ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ ذَلِكَ.

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about two drain-shoots; one is rain water and the other urine which mix with each other and drops thereof sprinkle over one’s clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful (when it still is raining).”’

لَوْ أَنَّ مِيزَابَيْنِ سَالا أَحَدُهُمَا مِيزَابُ بَوْلٍ وَ الْآخَرُ مِيزَابُ مَاءٍ فَاخْتَلَطَا ثُمَّ أَصَابَكَ مَا كَانَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that if two drain-shoots, one with rain water and the other with urine mix, and drops thereof sprinkle over one’s clothes, it is not harmful for him.”

قُلْتُ أَمُرُّ فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَيَسِيلُ عَلَيَّ الْمِيزَابُ فِي أَوْقَاتٍ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ النَّاسَ يَتَوَضَّئُونَ قَالَ قَالَ لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ لَا تَسْأَلْ عَنْهُ قُلْتُ وَ يَسِيلُ عَلَيَّ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمَطَرِ أَرَى فِيهِ التَّغَيُّرَ وَ أَرَى فِيهِ آثَارَ الْقَذَرِ فَتَقْطُرُ الْقَطَرَاتُ عَلَيَّ وَ يَنْتَضِحُ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُ وَ الْبَيْتُ يُتَوَضَّأُ عَلَى سَطْحِهِ فَيَكِفُ عَلَى ثِيَابِنَا قَالَ مَا بِذَا بَأْسٌ لَ

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I sometimes, pass by and water from a drain-shoot falls on me. At such time, I know, people take Wudu’. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful. أَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ أَنْ يُصِيبَ الثَّوْبَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا أَنْ يُعْلَمَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ نَجَّسَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ بَعْدَ الْمَطَرِ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فَاغْسِلْهُ وَ إِنْ كَانَ الطَّرِيقُ نَظِيفاً لَمْ تَغْسِلْهُ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about soil which is found with rain water. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful up to three days unless it is found out to have become Najis (unclean) by something after rainfall. If such drops sprinkle after three days, then you must wash, but if the road is clean, then you do not

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْخَلَاءِ فَأَسْتَنْجِي بِالْمَاءِ فَيَقَعُ ثَوْبِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَاءِ الَّذِي اسْتَنْجَيْتُ بِهِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ‌[3].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may use the toilet and then wash to clean myself but my clothes touch the water which was used for cleaning. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

فِي الْجُنُبِ يَغْتَسِلُ فَيَقْطُرُ الْمَاءُ عَنْ جَسَدِهِ فِي الْإِنَاءِ وَ يَنْتَضِحُ الْمَاءُ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَيَصِيرُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ إِنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهَذَا كُلِّهِ.

“It is about the case of a man who takes Ghusl (bath) and water-drops from his body sprinkle into the water container and from the ground. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

“It is about a man who takes Ghusl (bath) due to sexual matters and water drops sprinkle into the water container. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not harmful. Allah has not sanctioned anything in religion which causes hardships for you.”’

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَغْتَسِلُ فِي مُغْتَسَلٍ يُبَالُ فِيهِ وَ يُغْتَسَلُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَيَقَعُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ مَاءٌ يَنْزُو مِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may take Ghusl (bath) in a place which is used for taking Ghusl (bath) due to sexual matters, and urination and water-drops sprinkle from the ground into the water container.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

قَالَ: لَا تَغْتَسِلْ مِنَ الْبِئْرِ الَّتِي تَجْتَمِعُ فِيهَا غُسَالَةُ الْحَمَّامِ فَإِنَّ فِيهَا غُسَالَةَ وَلَدِ الزِّنَا وَ هُوَ لَا يَطْهُرُ إِلَى سَبْعَةِ آبَاءٍ[1] وَ فِيهَا غُسَالَةَ النَّاصِبِ وَ هُوَ شَرُّهُمَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمْ يَخْلُقْ خَلْقاً شَرّاً مِنَ الْكَلْبِ وَ إِنَّ النَّاصِبَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَى اللَّهِ مِنَ الْكَلْبِ قُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ مَاءِ الْحَمَّامِ يَغْتَسِلُ مِنْهُ الْجُنُبُ وَ الصَّبِيّ

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not take Ghusl (bath) from a well in which water from bath houses accumulate, because in it there is water which is used by one born out of wedlock and it does not become clean for seven generations. سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي أَدْخُلُ الْحَمَّامَ فِي السَّحَرِ وَ فِيهِ الْجُنُبُ وَ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ فَأَقُومُ فَأَغْتَسِلُ فَيَنْتَضِحُ عَلَيَّ بَعْدَ مَا أَفْرُغُ مِنْ مَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَ لَيْسَ هُوَ جَارٍ قُلْتُ‌[2] بَلَى قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

“I once heard a man saying to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘In the morning I enter the bathhouse and there is one who has experienced sexual relation and so on. I then stand up and take Ghusl (bath) and water from them sprinkles on me after I finish.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is it not running water?’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْمَاءُ الَّذِي تُسَخِّنُهُ الشَّمْسُ لَا تَوَضَّئُوا بِهِ وَ لَا تَغْتَسِلُوا بِهِ وَ لَا تَعْجِنُوا بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يُورِثُ الْبَرَصَ.

‘Do not use water which is heated by sun rays for Wudu’, Ghusl (bath) or to turn flour into dough with it; it causes leprosy.’”

سُئِلَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌[3] مَا حَدُّ الْغَائِطِ قَالَ لَا تَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَ لَا تَسْتَدْبِرْهَا وَ لَا تَسْتَقْبِلِ الرِّيحَ وَ لَا تَسْتَدْبِرْهَا. - وَ رُوِيَ أَيْضاً فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ لَا تَسْتَقْبِلِ الشَّمْسَ وَ لَا الْقَمَرَ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), was asked about (one’s condition) when defecating. خَرَجَ أَبُو حَنِيفَةَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع قَائِمٌ وَ هُوَ غُلَامٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو حَنِيفَةَ يَا غُلَامُ أَيْنَ يَضَعُ الْغَرِيبُ بِبَلَدِكُمْ‌[1] فَقَالَ اجْتَنِبْ أَفْنِيَةَ الْمَسَاجِدِ وَ شُطُوطَ الْأَنْهَارِ وَ مَسَاقِطَ الثِّمَارِ وَ مَنَازِلَ النُّزَّالِ وَ لَا تَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ وَ لَا بَوْلٍ وَ ارْفَعْ ثَوْبَكَ وَ ضَعْ حَيْثُ شِئْتَ.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ ثَلَاثُ خِصَالٍ مَلْعُونٌ مَنْ فَعَلَهُنَّ الْمُتَغَوِّطُ فِي ظِلِّ النُّزَّالِ وَ الْمَانِعُ الْمَاءَ الْمُنْتَابَ وَ سَادُّ الطَّرِيقِ الْمَسْلُوكِ.[2]

إِذَا سَمَّيْتَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ طَهُرَ جَسَدُكَ كُلُّهُ وَ إِذَا لَمْ تُسَمِّ لَمْ يَطْهُرْ مِنْ جَسَدِكَ إِلَّا مَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when you mention the name of Allah in your Wudu’, the whole of your body is cleansed, but if you do not mention the name of Allah only the parts of your body over which water has passed are cleansed.”

سَمِعْتُ الرِّضَا ع يَقُولُ‌ يُسْتَنْجَى وَ يُغْسَلُ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهُ عَلَى الشَّرْجِ‌[1] وَ لَا تُدْخَلُ فِيهِ الْأَنْمُلَةُ.

“I heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida (a.s.), say, ‘One should get rid of remaining feces and urine by washing what is outside of the buttocks and there is no need to enter one’s fingers inside.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْفَصِّ يُتَّخَذُ مِنْ حِجَارَةِ زُمُرُّدٍ[2] قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ لَكِنْ إِذَا أَرَادَ الِاسْتِنْجَاءَ نَزَعَهُ.

“I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Is it permissible to wear a ring with a stone of Emerald?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is not harmful but during washing one’s self after using the toilet, one should remove it.’”

الِاسْتِنْجَاءُ بِالْيَمِينِ مِنَ الْجَفَاءِ. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّهُ إِذَا كَانَتْ بِالْيَسَارِ عِلَّةٌ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that washing one’s self with the right hand after using toilet is of injustice.” It is narrated in another Hadith that it is permissible if there something is wrong with the left hand.”

قُلْتُ لَهُ لِلِاسْتِنْجَاءِ حَدٌّ قَالَ لَا يُنَقَّى مَا ثَمَّةَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ يُنَقَّى مَا ثَمَّةَ وَ يَبْقَى الرِّيحُ قَالَ الرِّيحُ لَا يُنْظَرُ إِلَيْهَا.

‘It is not clean as long as something is there.’ I then asked, ‘What happens if everything there is washed clean but smell is there?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Smell is not a thing that can be seen.’”

سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَبُولُ فَيُصِيبُ فَخِذَهُ‌ وَ رُكْبَتَهُ قَدْرَ نُكْتَةٍ مِنْ بَوْلٍ فَيُصَلِّي ثُمَّ يَذْكُرُ بَعْدُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَغْسِلْهُ قَالَ يَغْسِلُهُ وَ يُعِيدُ صَلَاتَهُ.

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about a man whose thigh and knee come in contact with a small drop of urine. He performs Salah (prayer) then remembers that he had not washed it clean? He (the Imam) said, ‘He must perform his Salah (prayer) again.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَسْتَنْجِيَ كَيْفَ يَقْعُدُ قَالَ كَمَا يَقْعُدُ لِلْغَائِطِ وَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهُ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ بَاطِنَهُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘A man wants to wash himself clean after using toilet. How should he sit?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He sits just as he does when defecating.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘He only needs to wash the outside and not the inside.’”

لِبَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ‌ مُرِي نِسَاءَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْ يَسْتَنْجِينَ بِالْمَاءِ وَ يُبَالِغْنَ فَإِنَّهُ مَطْهَرَةٌ لِلْحَوَاشِي وَ مَذْهَبَةٌ لِلْبَوَاسِيرِ.

فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ‌[1] قَالَ كَانَ النَّاسُ يَسْتَنْجُونَ بِالْكُرْسُفِ‌[2] وَ الْأَحْجَارِ ثُمَّ أُحْدِثَ الْوُضُوءُ[3] وَ هُوَ خُلُقٌ كَرِيمٌ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص وَ صَنَعَهُ وَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ‌.

تَوَضَّأْتُ يَوْماً وَ لَمْ أَغْسِلْ ذَكَرِي ثُمَّ صَلَّيْتُ فَسَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ اغْسِلْ ذَكَرَكَ وَ أَعِدْ صَلَاتَكَ.

“One day I performed ablution (wudu’), but I didn't wash my urethra, then I prayed. So I asked abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about it. He said: “Wash your urethra and repeat your prayer.“

يَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ يُعِيدُ الصَّلَاةَ وَ لَا يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who forgets to wash clean his urethra but he takes Wudu’ and performs Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ’He must wash his urethra clean and perform his Salah (prayer) again, but he does not have to take Wudu’ again.’” H 3872, Ch. 12, h 16

يَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ وَ يُعِيدُ الصَّلَاةَ وَ لَا يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘After using toilet if you forget to wash clean your buttocks (because of feces) and take Wudu’, then remember after performing Salah (prayer), you must perform your Salah (prayer) again. قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا دَخَلْتَ الْغَائِطَ فَقَضَيْتَ الْحَاجَةَ فَلَمْ تُهَرِقِ الْمَاءَ[1] ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأْتَ وَ نَسِيتَ أَنْ تَسْتَنْجِيَ فَذَكَرْتَ بَعْدَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ فَعَلَيْكَ الْإِعَادَةُ وَ إِنْ كُنْتَ أَهْرَقْتَ الْمَاءَ فَنَسِيتَ أَنْ تَغْسِلَ ذَكَرَكَ حَتَّى صَلَّيْتَ فَعَلَيْكَ إِعَادَةُ الْوُضُوءِ وَ الصَّلَاةِ وَ غَسْلُ ذَكَرِكَ لِأَنَّ الْبَوْلَ لَيْسَ مِثْلَ الْبِرَازِ[2].

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع رَجُلٌ بَالَ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ مَاءٌ فَقَالَ يَعْصِرُ أَصْلَ ذَكَرِهِ إِلَى طَرَفِهِ ثَلَاثَ عَصَرَاتٍ وَ يَنْتُرُ طَرَفَهُ‌[3] فَإِنْ خَرَجَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَلَيْسَ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ وَ لَكِنَّهُ مِنَ الْحَبَائِلِ‌[4].

I asked Abū Jaʿfar (AS) about a man who urinates but does not have water with him (for purification). He replied: He should squeeze the base of his penis to its tip three times and then shake the tip. If anything comes out after that, it is not from urine but from the ḥabā'il (moisture from passageways and veins).

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ بَالَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَ قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَوَجَدَ بَلَلًا قَالَ لَا يَتَوَضَّأُ إِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْحَبَائِلِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who urinates, then takes Wudu. He then stands up for Salah (prayer) and finds a certain moisture. He (the Imam) said, ’He does not need Wudu; it is of Haba’il (passageways, veins).”

سَأَلَ الرِّضَا ع رَجُلٌ وَ أَنَا حَاضِرٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بِي جُرْحاً فِي مَقْعَدَتِي فَأَتَوَضَّأُ وَ أَسْتَنْجِي ثُمَّ أَجِدُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ النَّدَى وَ الصُّفْرَةَ مِنَ الْمَقْعَدَةِ أَ فَأُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ فَقَالَ وَ قَدْ أَنْقَيْتَ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ رُشَّهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ لَا تُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ. - أَحْمَدُ عَنْ أَبِي نَصْرٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ الرِّضَا ع رَجُلٌ بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ صَفْوَانَ‌.

“Once a man asked al-Rida (a.s.), when I was present, saying, ‘There is a wound in my anus. I take Wudu and wash clean; but then I find wetness and yellowness there. Do I need to take Wudu again ? He (the Imam) said, ‘Had you cleaned it? He replied, ‘Yes, I did so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, but pour water on it and you

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ رُبَّمَا بُلْتُ وَ لَمْ أَقْدِرْ عَلَى الْمَاءِ وَ يَشْتَدُّ عَلَيَّ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِذَا بُلْتَ وَ تَمَسَّحْتَ فَامْسَحْ ذَكَرَكَ بِرِيقِكَ فَإِنْ وَجَدْتَ شَيْئاً فَقُلْ هَذَا مِنْ ذَاكَ‌[1].

“Once a man asked abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.), saying, ‘At times when I urinate, I cannot find water and it becomes severe for me . He (the Imam) said, ‘When you urinate and wipe it clean, you can then wipe your penis with saliva; and if you find something then say it is of that (moisture from passageways and veins).”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الرَّجُلُ يَعْتَرِيهِ الْبَوْلُ وَ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى حَبْسِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي إِذَا لَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَى حَبْسِهِ فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَى بِالْعُذْرِ يَجْعَلُ خَرِيطَةً[2].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who has the urge to urinate and cannot hold it any longer. He (the Imam) said to me, ‘If he is not able to hold, Allah is the foremost to accept apologies, he can allow it to come out in a bag.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْبَوْلِ يُصِيبُ الْجَسَدَ قَالَ صُبَّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ مَرَّتَيْنِ. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّهُ يُجْزِئُ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ بِمِثْلِهِ مِنَ الْمَاءِ[4] إِذَا كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَشَفَةِ وَ غَيْرِهِ. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّهُ مَاءٌ لَيْسَ بِوَسَخٍ فَيَحْتَاجَ أَنْ يُدْلَكَ.

“I once asked Abu ’Abdillah (a.s.), about urine which pollutes the body. He (the Imam) said: 'Pour water on it twice.' It is also narrated that one can wash it with the same amount of water if it is on the tip of the penis or on something else.
