قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ عَرَضْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص ابْنَةَ حَمْزَةَ فَقَالَ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ.

The daughter of Hamzah was proposed to the Messenger of Allah (saww) for marriage and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “Did you not know that she is a daughter of my brother because of breastfeeding?'"

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ كَبِيرٍ فَرُبَّمَا كَانَ الْفَرَحُ وَ الْحَزَنُ الَّذِي يَجْتَمِعُ فِيهِ الرِّجَالُ وَ النِّسَاءُ فَرُبَّمَا اسْتَحْيَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنْ تَكْشِفَ رَأْسَهَا عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي بَيْنَهَا وَ بَيْنَهُ الرَّضَاعُ وَ رُبَّمَا اسْتَخَفَّ الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى ذَلِكَ فَمَا الَّذِي يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ فَقَالَ مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَ الدَّمَ فَقُلْتُ و

On different occasions of happiness and sorrow during which men and women come together women feel shy removing their head scarf before men between whom there is breastfeeding relationship or men fear looking to that, so who becomes unlawful because of

لَا يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ إِلَّا مَا شَدَّ الْعَظْمَ وَ أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَ أَمَّا الرَّضْعَةُ وَ الرَّضْعَتَانِ وَ الثَّلَاثُ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ عَشْراً إِذَا كُنَّ مُتَفَرِّقَاتٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a woman who breastfeeds a girl and her husband has a son from another woman if it is lawful for this boy, the son of her husband to marry the girl she has breastfed. He (the Imam) said, ‘The milk is from ‘impregnating agent’ her husband.’”

فِي رَجُلٍ تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً فَوَلَدَتْ مِنْهُ جَارِيَةً ثُمَّ مَاتَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ فَتَزَوَّجَ أُخْرَى فَوَلَدَتْ مِنْهُ وَلَداً ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا أَرْضَعَتْ مِنْ لَبَنِهَا غُلَاماً أَ يَحِلُّ لِذَلِكَ الْغُلَامِ الَّذِي أَرْضَعَتْهُ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ ابْنَةَ الْمَرْأَةِ الَّتِي كَانَتْ تَحْتَ الرَّجُلِ قَبْلَ الْمَرْأَةِ الْأَخِيرَةِ فَقَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ ابْنَةَ فَحْلٍ قَدْ رَضَعَ مِنْ لَبَنِهِ‌[1].

“About the case of a man who marries a woman who gives birth from him to a girl, then the woman dies and he marries another woman who gives birth to a boy, then she breastfeeds a boy; if this boy can marry the daughter of the woman who was the wife of the man before this woman. سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا رَضَاعَ بَعْدَ فِطَامٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ وَ مَا الْفِطَامُ قَالَ الْحَوْلَانِ اللَّذَانِ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌[1].

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘Breastfeeding after weaning is not effective.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what is al-Fatam (weaning)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is the two years that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has mentioned (in His book).’ (2:233)”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ حَلَبَتْ مِنْ لَبَنِهَا فَأَسْقَتْ زَوْجَهَا لِتَحْرُمَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ أَمْسَكَهَا وَ أَوْجَعَ ظَهْرَهَا[2].

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about the case of a woman who drained her milk and made her husband to drink it so that she could become unlawful to him. He (the Imam) said, ‘He keeps her and makes her feel a backache.’” (Such expression is used for a flogging implemented by a judicial body.)
