إِذَا كَانَ سَمْكُ الْبَيْتِ فَوْقَ سَبْعَةِ أَذْرُعٍ أَوْ قَالَ ثَمَانِيَةِ أَذْرُعٍ فَكَانَ مَا فَوْقَ السَّبْعِ وَ الثَّمَانِ الْأَذْرُعِ مُحْتَضَراً وَ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ مَسْكُوناً[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If the roof of a house is higher than seven’ or as he (the Imam) said, ‘eight yards (arm-length), it is the residence of Satan or his living quarter.’”

“A man once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about people of the land mocking at his family and children. He (the Imam) asked, ‘How much is the height of your house?’ He replied, ‘It is ten yards.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Make it eight yards, then write verse 2:255 between the eigth and tenth yards as you go aroun

فِي سَمْكِ الْبَيْتِ إِذَا رُفِعَ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَذْرُعٍ كَانَ مَسْكُوناً فَإِذَا زَادَ عَلَى ثَمَانِيَةٍ فَلْيُكْتَبْ عَلَى رَأْسِ الثَّمَانِ آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ.

“About the case of the roof of a house which is eight yards high, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that it is a residence. If it is higher than eight yards, then on the level of eight yard height you must write verse 2:255.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Build your house seven yards high; anything higher than this becomes residence of Satans. Satans do not live in the sky or on earth. They live in the air.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, The lower parts of the wall complained before Allah because of the weight of the upper parts and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, inspired it saying, ‘Certain parts of you must leave the other parts.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ إِغْلَاقِ الْأَبْوَابِ وَ إِيكَاءِ الْأَوَانِي وَ إِطْفَاءِ السِّرَاجِ فَقَالَ أَغْلِقْ بَابَكَ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَفْتَحُ بَاباً وَ أَطْفِ السِّرَاجَ مِنَ الْفُوَيْسِقَةِ وَ هِيَ الْفَأْرَةُ لَا تُحْرِقْ بَيْتَكَ وَ أَوْكِ الْإِنَاءَ[2]. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَكْشِفُ مُخَمَّراً يَعْنِي مُغَطًّى.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about closing the doors, turning the utensils around and turning-off the lamp. He (the Imam) said, ‘Close your door; Satan does not open the door, turnoff the lamp against al-Fuwaysaqah which is the mouse, do not burn your house and secure the utensils (by means of cover and so on).

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ أَرْضِهِ بِقَاعاً تُسَمَّى الْمَرْحُومَاتِ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُدْعَى فِيهَا فَيُجِيبَ وَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ أَرْضِهِ بِقَاعاً تُسَمَّى الْمُنْتَقِمَاتِ فَإِذَا كَسَبَ الرَّجُلُ مَالًا مِنْ غَيْرِ حِلِّهِ سَلَّطَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بُقْعَةً مِنْهَا فَأَنْفَقَهُ فِيهَا.

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Thalith (a.s.), has said that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made certain areas of the earth called recipient of mercy. He has liked that He is asked for help therein so He might answer such prayers. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made certain parts of the earth as disliked, thus

نَزَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ يَا مَيْمُونُ مَنْ يَرْقُدُ مَعَكَ بِاللَّيْلِ أَ مَعَكَ غُلَامٌ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ فَلَا تَنَمْ وَحْدَكَ فَإِنَّ أَجْرَأَ مَا يَكُونُ الشَّيْطَانُ عَلَى الْإِنْسَانِ إِذَا كَانَ وَحْدَهُ.

‘Do not sleep alone; Satan becomes more daring against man when he finds him alone.’”

‘Unless Allah wills otherwise, something from Satan reaches very fast to one who defecates on a grave or urinates standing or urinates in stagnant water or walks in one shoe or drinks water standing, or stays in a house alone or sleeps overnight with his hands greasy with animal fat. “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that Satan is the strongest against man when he is alone without anything and I say that he must not sleep alone.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who sleeps in a house alone. He (the Imam) said, ‘I dislike it but if it is an emergency, then it is not harmful, however, he must speak of Allah a great deal and as much as he can, when he goes to sleep.’”

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), once asked Muhammad ibn Sulayman, ‘Where have you found lodging?’ He replied, ‘It is in so and so place.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is there anyone else with you?’ he replied, ‘No, there is no one with me.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Move from there, O Maymun and do not stay there alone; Satan is most daring

لَا تَشْرَبْ وَ أَنْتَ قَائِمٌ وَ لَا تَبُلْ فِي مَاءٍ نَقِيعٍ وَ لَا تَطُفْ بِقَبْرٍ وَ لَا تَخْلُ فِي بَيْتٍ وَحْدَكَ وَ لَا تَمْشِ فِي نَعْلٍ وَاحِدٍ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ أَسْرَعَ مَا يَكُونُ إِلَى الْعَبْدِ إِذَا كَانَ عَلَى بَعْضِ هَذِهِ الْأَحْوَالِ وَ قَالَ إِنَّهُ مَا أَصَابَ أَحَداً شَيْ‌ءٌ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْحَالِ فَكَادَ أَنْ يُفَارِقَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘You must not drink water when you are standing, must not urinate in stagnant water, must not spit on a grave, must not stay in a house alone, you must not walk in one shoe; Satan is the fastest against a servant when he is

“I once was sitting in the house of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and I looked at a pigeon of Ra’‘ibiy kind (name of a place) that made a long sound. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), looked at me and asked, ‘O Dawud, do you know what this bird says?’ I said, ‘No, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam)

It speaks of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, most often as well as Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) and it is a bird that loves us, the Ahl al-Bayt (family of prophet Muhammad (SAW)).’”

اسْتَهْدَانِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع طَيْراً مِنْ طُيُورِ الْعِرَاقِ فَأَهْدَيْتُ وَرَشَاناً فَدَخَلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَرَآهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْوَرَشَانَ يَقُولُ بُورِكْتُمْ بُورِكْتُمْ فَأَمْسِكُوهُ.

“’Isma’il, ibn abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once, asked me to give a bird of Iraq as a gift to him. I gave him a Warshan. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), came in. He (the Imam) saw it and said, ‘ Al-Warshan says, ‘You are blessed, you are blessed’, so you must keep it.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى- فَمَنْ بَدَّلَهُ بَعْدَ ما سَمِعَهُ فَإِنَّما إِثْمُهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يُبَدِّلُونَهُ‌ قَالَ نَسَخَتْهَا[2] الْآيَةُ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا قَوْلُهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- فَمَنْ خافَ مِنْ مُوصٍ جَنَفاً أَوْ إِثْماً فَأَصْلَحَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَلا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ‌ قَالَ يَعْنِي الْمُوصَى إِلَيْهِ إِنْ خَافَ جَنَفاً مِنَ الْمُوصِي فِيمَا أَوْصَى بِهِ إِلَيْهِ مِمَّا
