“Once I performed Salah (prayer) with Abi 'Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as) in Muzdalifah (a place in Makkah). When he completed his Salah, he turned to me and said, ‘O Aban, the five daily prayers are obligatory. I prayed with Abā ʿAbdillah al-Sadiq (as) the Maghrib prayer at al-Muzdalifah. When he finished, he established the prayer and prayed the last night prayer without offering a unit of prayer between them. Then I prayed with him after that for a year. He prayed Maghrib and then stood up and offered four units of prayer.

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about how much of Salah (prayer) Allah, the most Majestic and Glorious, has made obligatory. “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘There are ten Rak‘at in Salah (prayer). There are two for al- Dhuhr, two for al-‘Asr, two Rak‘at of Morning, two Rak‘at of al-Maghrib and two Rak‘at of al-‘Isha’ al-Akhirah. كَتَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ‌[1] الرَّجُلُ يَكُونُ فِي الدَّارِ تَمْنَعُهُ حِيطَانُهَا النَّظَرَ إِلَى حُمْرَةِ الْمَغْرِبِ وَ مَعْرِفَةَ مَغِيبِ الشَّفَقِ وَ وَقْتِ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ مَتَى يُصَلِّيهَا وَ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ فَوَقَّعَ ع يُصَلِّيهَا إِذَا كَانَ عَلَى هَذِهِ الصِّفَةِ عِنْدَ قَصْرَةِ النُّجُومِ‌[2] وَ الْمَغْرِبَ عِنْدَ اشْتِبَاكِهَا وَ بَيَاضُ مَغِيبِ الشَّمْسِ قَصْرَةُ النُّجُومِ إِلَى بَيَانِهَا.

“I once, wrote to al-Rida’ (a.s.), to ask a question. ‘Our people have said that when the sun declines toward the west at noontime, it is the time of al-Dhuhr and al-‘Asr Salah (prayers). صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِالنَّاسِ الظُّهْرَ وَ الْعَصْرَ حِينَ زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ وَ صَلَّى بِهِمُ الْمَغْرِبَ وَ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ قَبْلَ سُقُوطِ الشَّفَقِ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ وَ إِنَّمَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لِيَتَّسِعَ الْوَقْتُ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ.

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص لَا يُصَلِّي‌ مِنَ النَّهَارِ حَتَّى تَزُولَ الشَّمْسُ وَ لَا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ بَعْدَ مَا يُصَلِّي الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ حَتَّى يَنْتَصِفَ اللَّيْلُ.[1] مَعْنَى هَذَا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ وَقْتَ صَلَاةِ فَرِيضَةٍ وَ لَا سُنَّةٍ لِأَنَّ الْأَوْقَاتَ كُلَّهَا قَدْ بَيَّنَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فَأَمَّا الْقَضَاءُ قَضَاءُ الْفَرِيضَةِ وَ تَقْدِيمُ النَّوَافِلِ وَ تَأْخِيرُهَا فَلَا بَأْسَ‌[2].

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If you forget to perform Salah (prayer) or perform it without Wudu’ and miss Salah (prayers) which you must perform, begin with what is first. In explaining he has said that in al-Dhuhr there are twenty-one, in al-‘Asr twenty-one, in al-Maghrib sixteen, in al-‘Isha’ al-Akhirah twenty-one and in the morning Salah (prayer) there are eleven and in the five Qunut there are five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description).
