Prophethood

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَنَا أَوَّلُ وَافِدٍ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الْجَبَّارِ- يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ كِتَابُهُ وَ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي ثُمَّ أُمَّتِي ثُمَّ أَسْأَلُهُمْ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَ بِأَهْلِ بَيْتِي.

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘I will be the first to arrive before the Majestic, the Almighty on the Day of Judgment, His book and my family, then my followers whom I will ask about what they have done to the book of Allah and my family.’”

شَكَا رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص وَجَعاً فِي صَدْرِهِ فَقَالَ ص اسْتَشْفِ بِالْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- وَ شِفاءٌ لِما فِي الصُّدُورِ[2].

“Once a man complained to the Holy Prophet for having pain in his chest and he (a.s.) said, ‘Seek a cure from the Holy Quran; Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, says, “It is a cure for that which is in the chest (the heart).”’

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يَرْجِعُ الْأَمْرُ وَ الْخِلَافَةُ إِلَى آلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ عُمَرَ أَبَداً وَ لَا إِلَى بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ أَبَداً وَ لَا فِي وُلْدِ طَلْحَةَ وَ الزُّبَيْرِ أَبَداً وَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّهُمْ نَبَذُوا الْقُرْآنَ وَ أَبْطَلُوا السُّنَنَ وَ عَطَّلُوا الْأَحْكَامَ وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص- الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى مِنَ الضَّلَالِ وَ تِبْيَانٌ مِنَ الْعَمَى وَ اسْتِقَالَةٌ مِنَ الْعَثْرَ

8. Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from certain individuals of his people from al- Khashshab in a marfu’ manner from the Imam (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘I swear by Allah, Khilafat (leadership after the Holy Prophet) will never return to the family of abu Bakr and ‘Umar. It will

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أُعْطِيتُ السُّوَرَ الطِّوَالَ مَكَانَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَ أُعْطِيتُ الْمِئِينَ مَكَانَ الْإِنْجِيلِ وَ أُعْطِيتُ الْمَثَانِيَ مَكَانَ الزَّبُورِ وَ فُضِّلْتُ بِالْمُفَصَّلِ ثَمَانٌ وَ سِتُّونَ سُورَةً وَ هُوَ مُهَيْمِنٌ عَلَى سَائِرِ الْكُتُبِ وَ التَّوْرَاةُ لِمُوسَى وَ الْإِنْجِيلُ لِعِيسَى وَ الزَّبُورُ لِدَاوُدَ[1].

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The longer chapters of the Holy Quran were given to me as alternative to Torah, the chapters of one hundred verses in place of Injil, al-Mathani (Chapter 1) in place of al-Zabbur, in addition I was favored with sixty eight detailed chapters. It is dominant over other books, Torah was

يَجِي‌ءُ الْقُرْآنُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي أَحْسَنِ مَنْظُورٍ إِلَيْهِ صُورَةً فَيَمُرُّ بِالْمُسْلِمِينَ فَيَقُولُونَ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ مِنَّا فَيُجَاوِزُهُمْ إِلَى النَّبِيِّينَ فَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ مِنَّا فَيُجَاوِزُهُمْ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ فَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ مِنَّا حَتَّى يَنْتَهِيَ إِلَى رَبِّ الْعِزَّةِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ أَظْمَأْتُ هَوَاجِرَهُ‌[2] وَ أَسْهَرْتُ

“On the Day of Judgment the Holy Quran will come in the best shape and form. He will pass by the Muslims who will say, ‘This man is from us.’ He will pass toward the prophets who will say that he is of us, then he will pass toward the special angels who will say that he is one of us until he is before the Lord of Majes

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ فِي أَعْلَى دَرَجَةٍ مِنَ الْآدَمِيِّينَ مَا خَلَا النَّبِيِّينَ وَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ فَلَا تَسْتَضْعِفُوا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ حُقُوقَهُمْ فَإِنَّ لَهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْجَبَّارِ لَمَكَاناً عَلِيّاً.

‘The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘People of the Holy Quran are of the highest degree among men, except the prophets and the messengers of Allah, thus, you should not consider them weak in the matters of their rights; with Allah, the Most Majestic, the Almighty, they have a special status.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ تَعَلَّمُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ صَاحِبَهُ فِي صُورَةِ شَابٍّ جَمِيلٍ شَاحِبِ اللَّوْنِ فَيَقُولُ لَهُ الْقُرْآنُ‌[1] أَنَا الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَسْهَرْتُ لَيْلَكَ وَ أَظْمَأْتُ هَوَاجِرَكَ وَ أَجْفَفْتُ رِيقَكَ وَ أَسَلْتُ دَمْعَتَكَ أَئُولُ مَعَكَ حَيْثُمَا أُلْتَ وَ كُلُّ تَاجِرٍ مِنْ وَرَاءِ تِجَارَتِهِ وَ أَنَا الْيَوْمَ لَكَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ تِجَارَةِ كُلِّ تَاجِرٍ وَ

Through the same chain of narrators it is narrated from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: ‘‘The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Learn the Holy Quran; on the Day of Judgment it will come to his friends in the form of a most beautiful young person of pale complexion and will speak to his friend saying, “

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ أَحَقَّ النَّاسِ بِالتَّخَشُّعِ فِي السِّرِّ وَ الْعَلَانِيَةِ لَحَامِلُ الْقُرْآنِ وَ إِنَّ أَحَقَّ النَّاسِ فِي السِّرِّ وَ الْعَلَانِيَةِ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَ الصَّوْمِ لَحَامِلُ الْقُرْآنِ ثُمَّ نَادَى بِأَعْلَى صَوْتِهِ يَا حَامِلَ الْقُرْآنِ تَوَاضَعْ بِهِ يَرْفَعْكَ اللَّهُ وَ لَا تَعَزَّزْ بِهِ فَيُذِلَّكَ اللَّهُ يَا حَامِلَ الْقُرْآنِ تَزَيَّنْ بِهِ لِلَّهِ يُزَيِّنْكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The one expected to be the most humble in private and in public is the carrier of the Holy Quran, the one expected the most to perform prayer and fast in private and in public is the carrier of the Holy Quran. Then he called out loud, “O carrier of the Holy Quran, be humble with the h

قُلْتُ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ الْحَالُّ الْمُرْتَحِلُ‌[3] قُلْتُ وَ مَا الْحَالُّ الْمُرْتَحِلُ قَالَ فَتْحُ الْقُرْآنِ وَ خَتْمُهُ كُلَّمَا جَاءَ بِأَوَّلِهِ ارْتَحَلَ فِي آخِرِهِ وَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَنْ أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ الْقُرْآنَ فَرَأَى أَنَّ رَجُلًا أُعْطِيَ أَفْضَلَ مِمَّا أُعْطِيَ فَقَدْ صَغَّرَ عَظِيماً وَ عَظَّمَ صَغِيراً.

“Once I asked Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) ‘What deed is more virtuous?’ He said, ‘Al-Hall al- Murtahal .’ I then asked, ‘What is al-Hall al-MurtahalT The Imam said, ‘It is one who opens the Holy Quran and completes reading, whenever he begins he arrives at the end of the Holy Quran.’ The Imam said that the Messenger of Al

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ يَا مَعَاشِرَ قُرَّاءِ الْقُرْآنِ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِيمَا حَمَّلَكُمْ مِنْ كِتَابِهِ فَإِنِّي مَسْئُولٌ وَ إِنَّكُمْ مَسْئُولُونَ إِنِّي مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ تَبْلِيغِ الرِّسَالَةِ وَ أَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَتُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّا حُمِّلْتُمْ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَ سُنَّتِي.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘O community of the readers of the Holy Quran be pious before Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, in the matters of the responsibility that He has placed upon you toward His book. I will be questioned and you will be questioned. I will be questioned about the preaching of the mess

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ حَمَلَةُ الْقُرْآنِ عُرَفَاءُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَ الْمُجْتَهِدُونَ قُوَّادُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةَ[1] وَ الرُّسُلُ سَادَةُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةَ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The carriers of the Holy Quran will be the most knowledgeable people of paradise, the assiduously working people will be the leaders in paradise and the messengers will be the masters of the people of paradise.’”

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ نَوِّرُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ بِتِلَاوَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَ لَا تَتَّخِذُوهَا قُبُوراً كَمَا فَعَلَتِ الْيَهُودُ وَ النَّصَارَى صَلَّوْا فِي الْكَنَائِسِ وَ الْبِيَعِ‌[1] وَ عَطَّلُوا بُيُوتَهُمْ فَإِنَّ الْبَيْتَ إِذَا كَثُرَ فِيهِ تِلَاوَةُ الْقُرْآنِ كَثُرَ خَيْرُهُ وَ اتَّسَعَ أَهْلُهُ وَ أَضَاءَ لِأَهْلِ السَّمَاءِ كَمَا تُضِي‌ءُ نُجُومُ السَّمَاءِ لِأَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from al-Fudayl ibn ‘Uthman from Layth ibn abu Sulaym in a marfu’ manner from the Holy Prophet who has said the following: “Light up your homes by means of reading the Holy Quran and do not turn them into graves as the Jews and Christi

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ فِي لَيْلَةٍ لَمْ يُكْتَبْ مِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ خَمْسِينَ آيَةً كُتِبَ مِنَ الذَّاكِرِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ مِائَةَ آيَةٍ كُتِبَ مِنَ الْقَانِتِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ مِائَتَيْ آيَةٍ كُتِبَ مِنَ الْخَاشِعِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ ثَلَاثَ مِائَةِ آيَةٍ كُتِبَ مِنَ الْفَائِزِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ خَمْسَمِائَةِ آيَةٍ كُتِبَ مِنَ الْمُجْتَهِدِينَ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَ أَلْفَ آيَةٍ

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘One who reads ten verses from the Holy Quran in a night he is not written of the neglectful people. If one reads fifty verses, he is written of those who speak of Allah. If one reads one hundred verses, he is written of the pleading people before Allah. If one reads two hundred verses

سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ع يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ خَتْمُ الْقُرْآنِ إِلَى حَيْثُ تَعْلَمُ‌[1].

7. Mansur has narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah has said, “Complete reading of the Holy Quran is reading to the extent that you know.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَلْحَانِ الْعَرَبِ وَ أَصْوَاتِهَا وَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَ لُحُونَ أَهْلِ الْفِسْقِ‌[4] وَ أَهْلِ الْكَبَائِرِ فَإِنَّهُ سَيَجِي‌ءُ مِنْ بَعْدِي أَقْوَامٌ يُرَجِّعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْجِيعَ الْغِنَاءِ وَ النَّوْحِ وَ الرَّهْبَانِيَّةِ لَا يَجُوزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ قُلُوبُهُمْ مَقْلُوبَةٌ وَ قُلُوبُ مَنْ يُعْجِبُهُ شَأْنُهُمْ‌[5].

3. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ibrahim al-Ahmar from ‘Abd Allah ibn Hammad from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Read the Holy Quran with Arabic accent and voice. You must not read it with the accent of the sinful people who commit major sins. After me there will come

ذَكَرْتُ الصَّوْتَ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فَرُبَّمَا مَرَّ بِهِ الْمَارُّ فَصَعِقَ مِنْ حُسْنِ صَوْتِهِ وَ إِنَّ الْإِمَامَ لَوْ أَظْهَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئاً لَمَا احْتَمَلَهُ النَّاسُ مِنْ حُسْنِهِ قُلْتُ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ وَ يَرْفَعُ صَوْتَهُ بِالْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ يُحَمِّلُ النَّاسَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ مَا يُطِيقُونَ

“Once accents and voices were mentioned before abu al- Hassan (a.s.) and he said, ‘Once Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) was reading and someone passing by suffered a shock due to the beauty of his voice. If the Imam were to manifest such reading people could not bear its beauty.’ I (the narrator) then said, ‘The Messenger of

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَوْحَى إِلَى مُوسَى بْنِ عِمْرَانَ ع إِذَا وَقَفْتَ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ فَقِفْ مَوْقِفَ الذَّلِيلِ الْفَقِيرِ وَ إِذَا قَرَأْتَ التَّوْرَاةَ فَأَسْمِعْنِيهَا بِصَوْتٍ حَزِينٍ.

6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Ma’bad from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, sent revelation to Moses son of ‘Imran, peace be upon him, ‘Whenever you stand before me, do so like

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَمْ يُعْطَ أُمَّتِي أَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ الْجَمَالِ وَ الصَّوْتِ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحِفْظِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘What my followers have received is no less than three things: Beauty, attractive voice and memorization. ’”

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ إِنَّ مِنْ أَجْمَلِ الْجَمَالِ الشَّعْرَ الْحَسَنَ وَ نَغْمَةَ الصَّوْتِ الْحَسَنِ‌[3].

“The Holy Prophet has said, ‘The most beautiful thing in beauty is beautiful hair and the attractive tone of voice.’”

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ لِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ حِلْيَةٌ وَ حِلْيَةُ الْقُرْآنِ الصَّوْتُ الْحَسَنُ.

“The Holy Prophet has said, ‘For everything there is an ornament, the ornament of (reading) the Holy Quran is attractive tone of voice.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ أَبِي سَأَلَ جَدَّكَ عَنْ خَتْمِ الْقُرْآنِ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ جَدُّكَ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لَهُ جَدُّكَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي نَعَمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ فَكَانَ أَبِي يَخْتِمُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ خَتْمَةً فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ خَتَمْتُهُ بَعْدَ أَبِي فَرُبَّمَا زِدْتُ وَ رُبَّمَا نَقَصْتُ عَلَى قَدْرِ فَرَاغِي وَ شُغُلِي وَ نَشَاطِي وَ ك

“Once I asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.) ‘My father once asked your grandfather about reading all of the Holy Quran in one night.’ ‘(Do you mean it to happen) every night?’ Your grandfather inquired. ‘Yes, in the month of Ramadan.’ My father replied. Your grandfather asked him, ‘In the month of Ramadan?’ My father said, ‘Yes

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ الْأَعْجَمِيَّ مِنْ أُمَّتِي لَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ بِعَجَمِيَّةٍ فَتَرْفَعُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عَلَى عَرَبِيَّةٍ.

The Prophet (saw) said: "Indeed, a non-Arab man from my nation recites the Quran in a non-Arabic manner, and the angels elevate him to an Arabic level."

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ‌[3] كُلَّهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ لَمْ يَمُتْ حَتَّى يُدْرِكَ الْقَائِمَ وَ إِنْ مَاتَ كَانَ فِي جِوَارِ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ ص.

“I heard abu Ja’far (a.s.) saying, ‘Whoever reads all the chapters that begin with the word, ‘Sabbaha, or Yusabbihu’ before going to sleep will not die before seeing the twelfth Imam, and when he dies, he will be in the neighborhood of Muhammad (a.s.).’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ حِينَ يَأْخُذُ مَضْجَعَهُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ ذُنُوبَ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever reads Chapter 112 of the Holy Quran before going to sleep one hundred times, Allah forgives fifty years of his sins.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ أَرْبَعَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ الْبَقَرَةِ وَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ آيَتَيْنِ بَعْدَهَا[2] وَ ثَلَاثَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِهَا لَمْ يَرَ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَ مَالِهِ شَيْئاً يَكْرَهُهُ وَ لَا يَقْرَبُهُ شَيْطَانٌ وَ لَا يَنْسَى الْقُرْآنَ.

5. Hamid ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Khashshab from ibn Baqqah from Mu’adh from ‘Amr ibn Jami’ in a marfu’ manner from Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever reads four verses from the beginning of Chapter 2 of the Holy Quran, verse 255- 257 and three verses f

لَقَدْ وَافَى مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفاً وَ فِيهِمْ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا جَبْرَئِيلُ بِمَا يَسْتَحِقُّ صَلَاتَكُمْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ بِقِرَاءَتِهِ‌ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ قَائِماً وَ قَاعِداً وَ رَاكِباً وَ مَاشِياً وَ ذَاهِباً وَ جَائِياً.

13. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Holy Prophet performed prayer for Sa’d ibn Mu’adh and said, ‘A delegate of seventy thousand angels was there, among them Jibril (Gabriel) was also there. They all performed prayer

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قَرَأَ أَلْهاكُمُ التَّكاثُرُ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ وُقِيَ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever read al-Hakum al-Takathur Chapter 102 of the Holy Quran at bedtime will be safe from the mischief of the grave.’”

وَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّداً ص بِالْحَقِّ وَ أَكْرَمَ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ مَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ تَطْلُبُونَهُ مِنْ حِرْزٍ مِنْ حَرَقٍ أَوْ غَرَقٍ أَوْ سَرَقٍ أَوْ إِفْلَاتِ دَابَّةٍ مِنْ صَاحِبِهَا[2] أَوْ ضَالَّةٍ أَوْ آبِقٍ إِلَّا وَ هُوَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَمَنْ أَرَادَ ذَلِكَ فَلْيَسْأَلْنِي عَنْهُ قَالَ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَمَّا يُؤْمِنُ مِنَ الْحَرَقِ وَ الْغَرَقِ فَقَالَ

“I swear by the One who sent Muhammad (a.s.) with the truth and honored his family, all supplications for protection is in the Holy Quran. أَوَّلُ مَا نَزَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ‌ وَ آخِرُهُ‌ إِذا جاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ‌[2].

“The first thing that was revealed to the Messenger of Allah was, ‘(I begin) in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Read in the name of your Lord . . .’ (Chapter 96) and the last thing was, ‘When support comes from Allah. . . (Chapter 110)

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- شَهْرُ رَمَضانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ‌ وَ إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ فِي عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً بَيْنَ أَوَّلِهِ وَ آخِرِهِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ جُمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فِي طُولِ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص نَزَلَتْ صُحُفُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي أَوَّلِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ ر

“Once I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, . . .’ (2:185) but there were twenty years between its first and last (words).’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) said, ‘The Holy Quran was revealed in one piece in the

نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ بِإِيَّاكِ أَعْنِي وَ اسْمَعِي يَا جَارَةُ[1]. - وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: مَعْنَاهُ مَا عَاتَبَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهِ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ص فَهُوَ يَعْنِي بِهِ مَا قَدْ مَضَى فِي الْقُرْآنِ مِثْلُ قَوْلِهِ‌ وَ لَوْ لا أَنْ ثَبَّتْناكَ لَقَدْ كِدْتَ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْئاً قَلِيلًا[2] عَنَى بِذَلِكَ غَيْرَهُ.

قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ اقْرَأْ قُلْتُ مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَقْرَأُ قَالَ مِنَ السُّورَةِ التَّاسِعَةِ قَالَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَلْتَمِسُهَا فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ مِنْ سُورَةِ يُونُسَ قَالَ فَقَرَأْتُ‌ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنى‌ وَ زِيادَةٌ وَ لا يَرْهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمْ قَتَرٌ وَ لا ذِلَّةٌ[2] قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنِّي لَأَعْجَبُ كَيْفَ لَا أَشِيبُ إِذَا قَرَأْتُ الْقُرْآنَ‌[3].

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ اقْرَأْ عَلَى مَنْ تَرَى أَنَّهُ يُطِيعُنِي مِنْهُمْ وَ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِيَ السَّلَامَ وَ أُوصِيكُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ الْوَرَعِ فِي دِينِكُمْ وَ الِاجْتِهَادِ لِلَّهِ وَ صِدْقِ الْحَدِيثِ وَ أَدَاءِ الْأَمَانَةِ وَ طُولِ السُّجُودِ وَ حُسْنِ الْجِوَارِ فَبِهَذَا جَاءَ مُحَمَّدٌ ص أَدُّوا الْأَمَانَةَ إِلَى مَنِ ائْتَمَنَكُمْ عَلَيْهَا بَرّاً أَوْ فَاجِراً فَإِنَّ ر

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ انْظُرُوا مَنْ تُحَادِثُونَ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَنْزِلُ بِهِ الْمَوْتُ إِلَّا مُثِّلَ لَهُ أَصْحَابُهُ‌[2] إِلَى اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانُوا خِيَاراً فَخِيَاراً وَ إِنْ كَانُوا شِرَاراً فَشِرَاراً وَ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَمُوتُ إِلَّا تَمَثَّلْتُ لَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ.

Everyone after death will find the forms of his associates in the presence of Allah; these forms follow the worldly origins. A good form is from a good origin and an evil form is from

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ ثَلَاثَةٌ مُجَالَسَتُهُمْ تُمِيتُ الْقَلْبَ الْجُلُوسُ مَعَ الْأَنْذَالِ‌[4] وَ الْحَدِيثُ مَعَ النِّسَاءِ وَ الْجُلُوسُ مَعَ الْأَغْنِيَاءِ.

‘The Messenger of Allah has said, “Association with three kinds of people deadens the heart (reason): association with the lowly, speaking to women and sitting with the wealthy.”’”

لَا تَصْحَبُوا أَهْلَ الْبِدَعِ وَ لَا تُجَالِسُوهُمْ فَتَصِيرُوا عِنْدَ النَّاسِ كَوَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْمَرْءُ عَلَى دِينِ خَلِيلِهِ وَ قَرِينِهِ.

“Do not befriend blasphemers and do not associate with them; people may consider you as one of them. The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘A man follows the religion of his friend and associates.’”

إِنَّ أَعْرَابِيّاً مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ص فَقَالَ لَهُ أَوْصِنِي فَكَانَ مِمَّا أَوْصَاهُ تَحَبَّبْ إِلَى النَّاسِ يُحِبُّوكَ.

“Once an Arab man came to the Holy Prophet and said, ‘Instinct me with good advice.’ Of the good advice to him was: ‘Love people, they will love you.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ ثَلَاثٌ يُصْفِينَ وُدَّ الْمَرْءِ لِأَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ يَلْقَاهُ بِالْبِشْرِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ وَ يُوَسِّعُ لَهُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ إِذَا جَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ وَ يَدْعُوهُ بِأَحَبِّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَيْهِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Three things purify a Muslim’s love for his brother (in belief): meeting him in a cheerful manner, preparing for him a seat if he wants to sit down in a gathering, and calling him by his names that he loves most.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ التَّوَدُّدُ إِلَى النَّاسِ نِصْفُ الْعَقْلِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Showing that one loves people is half (the power) of reason.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ السَّلَامُ تَطَوُّعٌ وَ الرَّدُّ فَرِيضَةٌ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Offering the greeting of peace is voluntary, but answering it is obligatory. ’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِاللَّهِ وَ بِرَسُولِهِ مَنْ بَدَأَ بِالسَّلَامِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘A person who is closer to Allah and His Messenger is the one who initiates the offering of the greeting of peace.’”

مَرَّ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِقَوْمٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالُوا عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ وَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ وَ مَغْفِرَتُهُ وَ رِضْوَانُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع لَا تُجَاوِزُوا بِنَا مِثْلَ مَا قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ لِأَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع إِنَّمَا قَالُوا رَحْمَتُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكاتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ- أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ‌.

“Once Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) passed by a people and offered them the greeting of peace and they answered, ‘(We offer) you peace, May Allah grant you favors, blessings, forgiveness and His pleasure.’ Amir al-Mu’Minin (a.s.) said to them, ‘Do not say to us more than what the angels said to Ibrahim. كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَ يَرْدُدْنَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ وَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَى الشَّابَّةِ مِنْهُنَّ وَ يَقُولُ أَتَخَوَّفُ أَنْ يُعْجِبَنِي صَوْتُهَا فَيَدْخُلَ عَلَيَّ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا أَطْلُبُ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ.

“The Messenger of Allah would offer greeting of peace to women and they would respond to him. Amir al-Mu’ minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) would offer greeting of peace to women but he disliked offering it to the young women. He would say, ‘I fear their voice may attract me and a feeling may cause me more harm than the

دَخَلَ يَهُودِيٌّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ عَائِشَةُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ‌[1] فَقَالَ- رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَلَيْكُمْ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ كَمَا رَدَّ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَرَدَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كَمَا رَدَّ عَلَى صَاحِبَيْهِ فَغَضِبَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقَالَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَ الْغَضَبُ وَ اللَّعْنَةُ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْيَهُودِ

“Once, a Jewish person went in the presence of the Messenger of Allah while ‘A’ishah was with him. The Jewish person said, ‘Sam ‘Alaykum instead of ‘ Salamun ‘Alaykum. ’ The Messenger of Allah said, Alaykum. ’ Then another Jewish person came and said the same thing as the one before and the Messenger of Allah responded

أَقْبَلَ أَبُو جَهْلِ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَ مَعَهُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَى أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ ابْنَ أَخِيكَ قَدْ آذَانَا وَ آذَى آلِهَتَنَا فَادْعُهُ وَ مُرْهُ فَلْيَكُفَّ عَنْ آلِهَتِنَا وَ نَكُفُّ عَنْ إِلَهِهِ قَالَ فَبَعَثَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَدَعَاهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ص لَمْ يَرَ فِي الْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُشْرِكاً[2] فَقَالَ‌ السَّلامُ عَلى‌ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدى‌ ثُمّ

“Once abu Jahl along with a people from Quraysh went to abu Talib and said, ‘Your cousin has offended us and has harmed our idols, call him and command him to stop bothering our gods and we will stop bothering his Lord.’ “The Imam said, ‘Abu Talib sent for the Messenger of Allah. سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ لَهُ الْحَاجَةُ إِلَى الْمَجُوسِيِّ أَوْ إِلَى الْيَهُودِيِّ أَوْ إِلَى النَّصْرَانِيِّ أَوْ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَامِلًا أَوْ دِهْقَاناً مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ أَهْلِ أَرْضِهِ فَيَكْتُبُ إِلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ فِي الْحَاجَةِ الْعَظِيمَةِ أَ يَبْدَأُ بِالْعِلْجِ‌[1] وَ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ فِي كِتَابِهِ وَ إِنَّمَا يَصْنَعُ ذَلِكَ لِكَيْ تُقْضَى حَاجَتُهُ قَالَ أَمَّا أَنْ تَبْدَأَ بِ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَسَمِّتُوهُ وَ لَوْ كَانَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ جَزِيرَةٍ وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى وَ لَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْبَحْرِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘You should respond to one’s sneezing even if he is behind the island. In another Hadith it is said, ‘Even if it (response) is from behind the ocean.’”

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ نِعْمَ الشَّيْ‌ءُ الْعَطْسَةُ تَنْفَعُ فِي الْجَسَدِ وَ تُذَكِّرُ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قُلْتُ إِنَّ عِنْدَنَا قَوْماً يَقُولُونَ لَيْسَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فِي الْعَطْسَةِ نَصِيبٌ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانُوا كَاذِبِينَ فَلَا نَالَهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ مُحَمَّدٍ ص.

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘Sneezing is a good thing. It benefits the body and reminds one of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy.’ I then said, ‘Nearby to us there are people who say, “There is nothing in sneezing for the Messenger of Allah.” The Imam said, ‘If they are lying, the intercession of Muhammad will n

عَطَسَ غُلَامٌ لَمْ يَبْلُغِ الْحُلُمَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ص بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ.

“A young boy who had not yet reached puberty once sneezed in the presence of the Holy Prophet and said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’ The Holy Prophet said, ‘May Allah place blessings in you.’”

إِذَا عَطَسَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلِ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَ إِذَا سَمَّتَ الرَّجُلُ فَلْيَقُلْ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ وَ إِذَا رَدَدْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَ لَنَا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص سُئِلَ عَنْ آيَةٍ أَوْ شَيْ‌ءٍ فِيهِ ذِكْرُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ كُلُّمَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ فَهُوَ حَسَنٌ‌[1].
