Prophethood

أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص هَلْ أَوْصَى إِلَى الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع مَعَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ وَ هُمَا فِي ذَلِكَ السِّنِّ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَ لَا يَكُونُ لِسِوَاهُمَا فِي أَقَلَّ مِنْ خَمْسِ سِنِينَ.

I asked Abu Abdullah (as), whether the Messenger of Allah (swt), peace and blessings be upon him and his family, had appointed Al-Hasan (as) and Al-Hussain (as), peace be upon them both, along with the Commander of the Faithful (as), peace be upon him, in his will. Imam (as) replied: "Yes." I asked: "Even though they w

أَ وَ مَا عَلِمَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص أَمَرَ بِرَدِّ الْحَبِيسِ وَ إِنْفَاذِ الْمَوَارِيثِ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَفَعَلَ كَمَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي شَكَوْتُكَ إِلَى جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع فَقَالَ لِي كَيْتَ وَ كَيْتَ قَالَ فَحَلَّفَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى أَنَّهُ قَدْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ فَحَلَفْتُ لَهُ فَقَضَى لِي بِذَلِكَ.

I used to frequently go to Ibn Abi Layla regarding an inheritance matter of ours so that he could divide it. Part of the estate included a habis (a temporary endowment), but he kept postponing the matter. When this delay persisted, I complained about him to Abu Abdullah (as). سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ وَرِثَ عَلِيٌّ ع مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص عِلْمَهُ وَ وَرِثَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ع تَرِكَتَهُ.

Hadith.5605 - Jamil bin Darraj narrated from Zurara, who reported from Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as), that he said: "Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as) inherited the knowledge of the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family), and Sayyida Fatimah {s.a} (peace be upon her) inherited his possess

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا وَرِثَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص الْعَبَّاسُ وَ لَا عَلِيٌّ ع وَ لَا وَرِثَتْهُ إِلَّا فَاطِمَةُ ع‌[2] وَ مَا كَانَ أَخَذَ عَلِيٌّ ع السِّلَاحَ وَ غَيْرَهُ إِلَّا لِأَنَّهُ قَضَى عَنْهُ دَيْنَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ ع- وَ أُولُوا الْأَرْحامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلى‌ بِبَعْضٍ فِي كِتابِ اللَّهِ‌

I heard Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) say: "By Allah (swt), neither Al-Abbas nor Ali (as) inherited from the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family). وَ قَرَأْتُ فِيهَا رَجُلٌ تَرَكَ ابْنَتَهُ وَ أَبَاهُ لِلْبِنْتِ النِّصْفُ وَ لِلْأَبِ سَهْمٌ يُقْسَمُ الْمَالُ عَلَى أَرْبَعَةِ أَسْهُمٍ فَمَا أَصَابَ ثَلَاثَةً فَهُوَ لِلِابْنَةِ وَ مَا أَصَابَ سَهْماً فَلِلْأَبِ‌[5] وَ إِنْ تَرَكَ أَبَوَيْنِ وَ ابْناً وَ ابْنَةً أَوْ بَنِينَ وَ بَنَاتٍ فَلِلْأَبَوَيْنِ السُّدُسَانِ وَ مَا بَقِيَ فَلِلْبَنِينَ وَ الْبَنَاتِ‌ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ‌ فَإِنْ تَرَكَ اب

Hadith.5614 - Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr narrated from Umar ibn Udhayna from Muhammad ibn Muslim that Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) had him read the "Scroll of Inheritance Shares," which was dictated by the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) and written by Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as

وَ رَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ‌ أَقْرَأَنِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع صَحِيفَةَ الْفَرَائِضِ الَّتِي هِيَ إِمْلَاءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ خَطُّ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع بِيَدِهِ فَقَرَأْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةٌ مَاتَتْ وَ تَرَكَتْ زَوْجَهَا وَ أَبَوَيْهَا فَلِلزَّوْجِ النِّصْفُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَسْهُمٍ وَ لِلْأُمِّ الثُّلُثُ سَهْمَانِ وَ لِلْأَبِ السُّدُسُ سَهْمٌ‌[2].

"Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) read to me the 'Book of Inheritance', which was dictated by the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) and written in the handwriting of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as). لِقَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ ص‌ أَعْيَانُ بَنِي الْأُمِّ أَحَقُّ بِالْمِيرَاثِ مِنْ وُلْدِ الْعَلَّاتِ‌[3]. فَإِنْ تَرَكَ أَخَوَاتٍ لِأَبٍ وَ أُمٍّ وَ أَخَوَاتٍ لِأَبٍ وَ ابْنِ أَخٍ لِأَبٍ فَلِلْأَخَوَاتِ لِلْأَبِ وَ الْأُمِّ الثُّلُثَانِ وَ مَا بَقِيَ رَدٌّ عَلَيْهِنَّ لِأَنَّهُنَّ أَقْرَبُ الْأَرْحَامِ فَإِنْ تَرَكَ أَخاً لِأَبٍ وَ ابْنَ أَخٍ لِأَبٍ وَ أُمٍّ فَالْمَالُ كُلُّهُ لِلْأَخِ مِنَ الْأَبِ لِأَنَّهُ أَقْرَبُ بِبَطْ

Hadith.5621 - The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "The full siblings from the same mother are more entitled to inheritance than the paternal half-siblings." [AL SADUQ] If a person leaves behind full sisters (from the same father and mother), paternal sisters (from the same father only), a

أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ فَرِيضَةِ الْجَدِّ فَقَالَ مَا أَعْلَمُ أَحَداً مِنَ النَّاسِ‌[1] قَالَ فِيهَا إِلَّا بِالرَّأْيِ إِلَّا عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع‌[2] فَإِنَّهُ قَالَ فِيهَا بِقَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص‌[3].

I asked Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) about the inheritance share (fariḍah) of the grandfather. Imam (as) replied: "I do not know anyone among the people who has spoken about it except based on personal opinion, except for Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as), for He (as) spoke about it according to the saying o

وَ رَوَى الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ‌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص أَطْعَمَ الْجَدَّةَ أُمَّ الْأَبِ السُّدُسَ وَ ابْنُهَا حَيٌّ- وَ أَطْعَمَ الْجَدَّةَ أُمَّ الْأُمِّ السُّدُسَ وَ ابْنَتُهَا حَيَّةٌ[1].

"The Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) granted the paternal grandmother (the father's mother) one-sixth of the inheritance while her son was alive, and he granted the maternal grandmother (the mother's mother) one-sixth while her daughter was alive."

وَ رَوَى الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ‌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص أَطْعَمَ الْجَدَّةَ السُّدُسَ وَ لَمْ يَفْرِضِ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهَا شَيْئاً[1].

Hadith.5629 - Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Faddal narrated from Abdullah ibn Bukayr from Zurarah, who narrated from Abu Jafar Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) that he said: "The Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) granted the grandmother one-sixth, while Allah (swt), the Almighty and Majestic, did no

وَ لِذَلِكَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ فِي النَّخْلَةِ اسْتَوْصُوا بِعَمَّتِكُمْ خَيْراً[3].

Hadith.5703 - For this reason (Hadith.5702), the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said regarding the date palms: "Treat your paternal aunt (metaphorical) well."

مَعَ قَوْلِ اَلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ : " اَلْإِسْلاَمُ يَزِيدُ وَ لاَ يَنْقُصُ".

Hadith.5717 - With the statement of the Prophet (sw), peace and blessings be upon him and his family: "Islam increases and does not decrease."

وَ مَعَ قَوْلِهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ: "لاَ ضَرَرَ وَ لاَ إِضْرَارَ فِي اَلْإِسْلاَمِ ".

Hadith.5718 - With the statement of the Prophet (sw), peace and blessings be upon him and his family: "There is no harm and no reciprocation of harm in Islam."

مُعَاذٌ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص يَقُولُ- الْإِسْلَامُ يَزِيدُ وَ لَا يَنْقُصُ فَوَرَّثَ الْمُسْلِمَ مِنْ أَخِيهِ الْيَهُودِيِّ.

Hadith.5720 - It was narrated from Abu Al-Aswad Al-Duʾali that Muadh ibn Jabal was in Yemen when people gathered around him and said: "A Jewish man has died and left behind a Muslim brother." Muadh said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace be upon him and his family) say: 'Islam increases and does not diminish

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَقُولُ‌ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ وَ مَنْ تَرَكَ مَالًا فَلِلْوَارِثِ وَ مَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْناً أَوْ ضَيَاعاً فَإِلَيَّ وَ عَلَيَ‌[3].

I heard Abu Abdullah (as) narrated that the Prophet of Allah (swt) (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to say: "I have a greater claim over every believer than his own self. Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs, and whoever leaves behind debt or dependents in need, then it is upon me and

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا مَاتَ الْمَيِّتُ فِي سَفَرٍ فَلَا تَكْتُمُوا مَوْتَهُ أَهْلَهُ فَإِنَّهَا أَمَانَةٌ لِعِدَّةِ امْرَأَتِهِ تَعْتَدُّ وَ مِيرَاثُهُ يُقْسَمُ‌ بَيْنَ أَهْلِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ الْمَيِّتُ مِنْهُمْ فَيَذْهَبَ نَصِيبُهُ‌[1].

"I heard the Messenger of Allah (swt) (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) say: 'When a person dies during a journey, do not conceal his death from his family, for it is a trust concerning the waiting period (ʿiddah) of his wife so that she may observe it, and his inheritance can be distributed among his fa

الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى‌[1].

Hadith.5763 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

مَا قَلَّ وَ كَفَى خَيْرٌ مِمَّا كَثُرَ وَ أَلْهَى.

Hadith.5764 - The Prophet (sw) said; "That which is little but sufficient is better than that which is abundant and distracts."

خَيْرُ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَى.

رَأْسُ الْحِكْمَةِ مَخَافَةُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌[2].

Hadith.5766 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The foundation of wisdom is the fear of Allah (swt), the Mighty and Majestic."

خَيْرُ مَا أُلْقِيَ فِي الْقَلْبِ الْيَقِينُ‌[3].

Hadith.5767 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The best of things that can be placed in the heart is certainty.

الِارْتِيَابُ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ.

Hadith.5768 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Doubt (in religion) is part of disbelief."

النِّيَاحَةُ مِنْ عَمَلِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ[4].

Hadith.5769 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Wailing is an act of the Age of Ignorance."

السُّكْرُ جَمْرُ النَّارِ[5].

Hadith.5770 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Intoxication is a burning coal of the Fire (Hellfire)."

الشِّعْرُ مِنْ إِبْلِيسَ.

Hadith.5771 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Poetry is from Iblis (Satan)."

الْخَمْرُ جِمَاعُ الْآثَامِ‌[6].

Hadith.5772 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Alcohol is the source of all sins."

النِّسَاءُ حِبَالَةُ الشَّيْطَانِ‌[7].

Hadith.5773 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Women are the snares of Satan."

الشَّبَابُ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الْجُنُونِ.

Hadith.5774 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Youth is a branch of madness (irrationality)."

شَرُّ الْمَكَاسِبِ كَسْبُ الرِّبَا.

Hadith.5775 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The worst of earnings is the earning through usury."

شَرُّ الْمَآكِلِ أَكْلُ مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ ظُلْماً.

Hadith.5776 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The worst of foods (wealth) is consuming the wealth of an orphan unjustly."

السَّعِيدُ مَنْ وُعِظَ بِغَيْرِهِ.

Hadith.5777 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The fortunate one is he who learns a lesson from others."

الشَّقِيُّ مَنْ شَقِيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ‌[1].

Hadith.5778 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The wretched one is he who is destined for wretchedness while in his mother's womb."

مَصِيرُكُمْ إِلَى أَرْبَعَةِ أَذْرُعٍ‌[2].

Hadith.5779 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Your ultimate destination (grave) is four cubits."

أَرْبَى الرِّبَا الْكَذِبُ‌[3].

Hadith.5780 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The greatest form of usury is lying."

سِبَابُ الْمُؤْمِنِ فُسُوقٌ قِتَالُ الْمُؤْمِنِ كُفْرٌ أَكْلُ لَحْمِهِ مِنْ مَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حُرْمَةُ مَالِهِ كَحُرْمَةِ دَمِهِ.

Hadith.5781 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Insulting a believer is wickedness, fighting a believer is disbelief, consuming his flesh (backbiting) is disobedience to Allah (swt), the Mighty and Majestic, and the sanctity of his wealth is like the sanctity of his blood."

مَنْ يَكْظِمِ الْغَيْظَ يَأْجُرْهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

Hadith.5782 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Whoever suppresses anger, Allah (swt), the Mighty and Majestic, will reward him."

مَنْ يَصْبِرْ عَلَى الرَّزِيَّةِ يُعَوِّضْهُ اللَّهُ.

Hadith.5783 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Whoever is patient during a calamity, Allah (swt) will compensate him."

الْآنَ حَمِيَ الْوَطِيسُ‌[4].

Hadith.5784 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Now the battle (battlefield) has intensified." (Spoken on the Day of Battle of Hunayn)

لَا يُلْسَعُ الْمُؤْمِنُ مِنْ جُحْرٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ.

Hadith.5785 - The Prophet (sw) said; "A believer is not stung from the same hole twice."

لَا يَجْنِي عَلَى الْمَرْءِ إِلَّا يَدُهُ‌[1].

Hadith.5786 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Affliction (harm) does not come to a person except with his own hand."

الشَّدِيدُ مَنْ غَلَبَ نَفْسَهُ‌[2].

Hadith.5787 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The strong one is the one who overcomes himself (nafs)."

لَيْسَ الْخَبَرُ كَالْمُعَايَنَةِ[3].

Hadith.5788 - The Prophet (sw) said; "'Hearing' (with the ears) is not equivalent to 'seeing' (with the eyes)."

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِأُمَّتِي فِي بُكُورِهَا يَوْمَ سَبْتِهَا وَ خَمِيسِهَا.

Hadith.5789 - The Prophet (sw) said; "O' Allah (swt), bless my nation in its (utilizing) early mornings on its Saturdays and Thursdays."

الْمَجَالِسُ بِالْأَمَانَةِ[4].

Hadith.5790 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Gatherings are based on trust." (referring to that which is said and heard during gatherings)

سَيِّدُ الْقَوْمِ خَادِمُهُمْ‌[5].

Hadith.5791 - The Prophet (sw) said; "The leader of a people should serve (the people)."

لَوْ بَغَى جَبَلٌ عَلَى جَبَلٍ لَجَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ دَكّاً.

Hadith.5792 - The Prophet (sw) said; "If (even) a mountain were to oppress another mountain, Allah (swt) would crush it to dust."

ابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ.

Hadith.5793 - The Prophet (sw) said; "Begin (good behaviors and conduct) with those whom you support (family)."

الْحَرْبُ خُدْعَةٌ[6].

Hadith.5794 - The Prophet (sw) said; "War is deception." (War obfuscates truth, and is lacking in transparency and truth)

الْمُسْلِمُ مِرْآةٌ لِأَخِيهِ.

Hadith.5795 - The Prophet (sw) said; "A Muslim is a mirror to his brother."

امَاتَ حَتْفَ أَنْفِهِ‌[1].

Hadith.5796 - The Prophet (sw) said; "He died a natural death." (spoken regarding a person who dies whilst not partaking in active jihad)
