Oneness of Allah

- سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌ هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَ الْآخِرُ وَ قُلْتُ أَمَّا الْأَوَّلُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ وَ أَمَّا الْآخِرُ فَبَيِّنْ لَنَا تَفْسِيرَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَيْ‌ءٌ إِلَّا يَبِيدُ أَوْ يَتَغَيَّرُ أَوْ يَدْخُلُهُ التَّغَيُّرُ وَ الزَّوَالُ أَوْ يَنْتَقِلُ مِنْ لَوْنٍ إِلَى لَوْنٍ وَ مِنْ هَيْئَةٍ إِلَى هَيْئَةٍ وَ مِنْ صِفَةٍ إِلَى صِفَةٍ وَ مِنْ زِيَادَةٍ إِل

“I asked abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.), about the words of Allah, The Mighty and Glorious, ‘He (Allah) is the first and the last.’ (57:3) As for him being the first, we have understood that, but explain for us the meaning of Him being the last.” He (the Imam) said, “Nothing exists except that it is subject to annihilation, alte

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ قَدْ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْأَوَّلِ وَ الْآخِرِ فَقَالَ الْأَوَّلُ لَا عَنْ أَوَّلٍ قَبْلَهُ وَ لَا عَنْ بَدْءٍ سَبَقَهُ وَ الْآخِرُ لَا عَنْ نِهَايَةٍ كَمَا يُعْقَلُ مِنْ صِفَةِ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ وَ لَكِنْ قَدِيمٌ أَوَّلٌ آخِرٌ لَمْ يَزَلْ وَ لَا يَزُولُ بِلَا بَدْءٍ وَ لَا نِهَايَةٍ لَا يَقَعُ عَلَيْهِ الْحُدُوثُ وَ لَا يَحُولُ مِنْ حَالٍ إِلَى حَالٍ‌ خالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ[1].

قَالَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَهُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَالَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع حَدَّدْتَهُ‌[2] فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ كَيْفَ أَقُولُ قَالَ قُلْ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَنْ يُوصَفَ.

“A man said, 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) in his presence.” He (the Imam) asked, “Allah is Greater than which thing?” The man replied, “Greater than everything.” Abu 'Abdallah (a.s.) said, “You have limited Him.” The man asked, “Then, how should I say it?” He replied, “Say, Allah is Greater than what can be d

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ أَيُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ فَقُلْتُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَالَ وَ كَانَ ثَمَّ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَيَكُونُ أَكْبَرَ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ وَ مَا هُوَ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَنْ يُوصَفَ.

“Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) asked, ‘What is Allah Greater than?” I replied, “Allah is Greater of all things.” He (the Imam) further asked, “Were there other things so Allah would be considered the greatest of them?” I then asked, “What then is the meaning thereof?”’ He (the Imam) replied, “Allah is far greater than all

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَنَفَةٌ لِلَّهِ‌[1].

“I asked abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words 'Glorious is Allah.'” He replied, “(It means) Respect of Allah.”

- سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌ سُبْحانَ اللَّهِ‌ مَا يُعْنَى بِهِ قَالَ تَنْزِيهُهُ.

“I asked abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the meaning of the words of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'Glory be to Allah', what is the meaning of it?’ He said: ‘His Transcendence’.”

- سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِيَ ع مَا مَعْنَى الْوَاحِدِ فَقَالَ إِجْمَاعُ الْأَلْسُنِ عَلَيْهِ بِالْوَحْدَانِيَّةِ كَقَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى‌ وَ لَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ‌.

“What is the meaning of the One?” He replied, “It means the unanimity of all tongues in speaking of Allah’s Oneness, as can be found in His saying, the Most High: 'If you ask them who created them, they will certainly say, “Allah!”' (43:87)

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ وَ هُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ الْوَاحِدُ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ. لَمْ يَلِدْ وَ لَمْ يُولَدْ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ لَوْ كَانَ كَمَا يَقُولُ الْمُشَبِّهَةُ لَمْ يُعْرَفِ الْخَالِقُ مِنَ الْمَخْلُوقِ‌[3]- وَ لَا الْمُنْشِئُ مِنَ الْمُنْشَإِ لَكِنَّهُ الْمُنْشِئُ فَرْقٌ بَيْنَ مَنْ جَسَّمَهُ وَ صَوَّرَهُ وَ أَنْشَأَهُ إِذْ كَانَ لَا يُشْبِهُهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ وَ لَا يُشْبِهُ ه

“I heard the Imam saying, ‘He (Allah) is the Subtle, All-aware, All-hearing, All-seeing, the One, the Self-sufficient, Who does not have any children, is not any one’s child and there is no one similar to Him. قَالَ: اعْلَمْ عَلَّمَكَ اللَّهُ الْخَيْرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى قَدِيمٌ وَ الْقِدَمُ صِفَتُهُ الَّتِي دَلَّتِ الْعَاقِلَ عَلَى أَنَّهُ لَا شَيْ‌ءَ قَبْلَهُ وَ لَا شَيْ‌ءَ مَعَهُ فِي دَيْمُومِيَّتِهِ فَقَدْ بَانَ لَنَا بِإِقْرَارِ الْعَامَّةِ مُعْجِزَةُ الصِّفَةِ[3] أَنَّهُ لَا شَيْ‌ءَ قَبْلَ اللَّهِ وَ لَا شَيْ‌ءَ مَعَ اللَّهِ فِي بَقَائِهِ وَ بَطَلَ قَوْلُ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ قَبْلَهُ أَوْ كَانَ

“May Allah, bestow up on you knowledge of the good, notice that Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, is eternal. Eternity is that attribute which guides the wise that there was nothing before Him in eternity nor is there anything with Him eternal. That this attribute is a miraculous one has come to light from the ackno

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا الصَّمَدُ قَالَ السَّيِّدُ الْمَصْمُودُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْقَلِيلِ وَ الْكَثِيرِ.

“I asked Imam abu Ja‘far al-Thani (the 2nd (a.s.), ‘May Allah take my soul in your service, what is the meaning of the word al-Samad?’” The Imam replied, al-Samad means the Lord to Who one turns for help, big or small.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنَ التَّوْحِيدِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَتْ أَسْمَاؤُهُ الَّتِي يُدْعَا بِهَا وَ تَعَالَى فِي عُلُوِّ كُنْهِهِ وَاحِدٌ تَوَحَّدَ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ فِي تَوَحُّدِهِ‌[5] ثُمَّ أَجْرَاهُ عَلَى خَلْقِهِ فَهُوَ وَاحِدٌ صَمَدٌ قُدُّوسٌ يَعْبُدُهُ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ يَصْمُدُ إِلَيْهِ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ عِلْماً. فَهَذَا هُوَ الْمَعْنَى الصَّحِيحُ‌[6] فِي تَأْوِيلِ ا

“I asked Imam abu Ja‘far (a.s.) a few things about the Oneness of Allah. The Imam replied, “Allah, Holy are Whose names, with which He is mentioned is Exalted and Most High in His Own-self. He is One. In Oneness He is the One and only in Oneness. He then made His creatures to know Him as the only One. He is One, Self-s

ذُكِرَ عِنْدَهُ قَوْمٌ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى يَنْزِلُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَنْزِلُ وَ لَا يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى أَنْ يَنْزِلَ إِنَّمَا مَنْظَرُهُ‌[1] فِي الْقُرْبِ وَ الْبُعْدِ سَوَاءٌ لَمْ يَبْعُدْ مِنْهُ قَرِيبٌ وَ لَمْ يَقْرُبْ مِنْهُ بَعِيدٌ- وَ لَمْ يَحْتَجْ إِلَى شَيْ‌ءٍ بَلْ يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ وَ هُوَ ذُو الطَّوْلِ‌ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيم

لَا أَقُولُ إِنَّهُ قَائِمٌ فَأُزِيلَهُ عَنْ مَكَانِهِ وَ لَا أَحُدُّهُ بِمَكَانٍ يَكُونُ فِيهِ وَ لَا أَحُدُّهُ أَنْ يَتَحَرَّكَ فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنَ الْأَرْكَانِ وَ الْجَوَارِحِ وَ لَا أَحُدُّهُ بِلَفْظِ شَقِّ فَمٍ وَ لَكِنْ كَمَا قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى- كُنْ فَيَكُونُ‌ بِمَشِيئَتِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَرَدُّدٍ فِي نَفَسٍ صَمَداً فَرْداً لَمْ يَحْتَجْ إِلَى شَرِيكٍ يَذْكُرُ لَهُ مُلْكَهُ وَ لَا يَفْتَحُ لَهُ أَب

قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي الْعَوْجَاءِ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي بَعْضِ مَا كَانَ يُحَاوِرُهُ ذَكَرْتَ اللَّهَ فَأَحَلْتَ عَلَى غَائِبٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَيْلَكَ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ‌ غَائِباً مَنْ هُوَ مَعَ خَلْقِهِ شَاهِدٌ وَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَقْرَبُ‌ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ[1] يَسْمَعُ كَلَامَهُمْ وَ يَرَى أَشْخَاصَهُمْ وَ يَعْلَمُ أَسْرَارَهُمْ فَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي الْعَوْجَاءِ أَ هُوَ فِي كُلِّ مَكَانٍ أَ لَيْسَ إِذَا

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع جَعَلَنِيَ اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ يَا سَيِّدِي قَدْ رُوِيَ لَنَا أَنَّ اللَّهَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ دُونَ مَوْضِعٍ‌ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوى‌ وَ أَنَّهُ يَنْزِلُ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ فِي النِّصْفِ الْأَخِيرِ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا وَ رُوِيَ أَنَّهُ يَنْزِلُ عَشِيَّةَ عَرَفَةَ ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى مَوْضِعِهِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ مَوَالِيكَ فِي ذَلِكَ إِذَا كَانَ فِي مَوْ

هُوَ وَاحِدٌ وَاحِدِيُّ الذَّاتِ بَائِنٌ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ وَ بِذَاكَ وَصَفَ نَفْسَهُ وَ هُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ مُحِيطٌ بِالْإِشْرَافِ وَ الْإِحَاطَةِ وَ الْقُدْرَةِ- لا يَعْزُبُ‌ عَنْهُ مِثْقالُ ذَرَّةٍ فِي السَّماواتِ وَ لا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَ لا أَصْغَرُ مِنْ ذلِكَ وَ لا أَكْبَرُ بِالْإِحَاطَةِ وَ الْعِلْمِ لَا بِالذَّاتِ لِأَنَّ الْأَمَاكِنَ مَحْدُودَةٌ تَحْوِيهَا حُدُودٌ أَرْبَعَةٌ فَإِذَا كَانَ بِالذَّاتِ لَزِمَهَا الْح

He is different from His creatures and as such He has said about

اسْتَوَى عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَلَيْسَ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَقْرَبَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ.

“A person asked the Imam about the words of Allah, “The Beneficent God is dominant over the Throne (of the realm) (20:5)” The Imam said, “Allah established His control over all things. No one thing is closer to Him than any other thing.”

اسْتَوَى مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَلَيْسَ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَقْرَبَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ.

"He rose above everything [in greatness], so there is not a thing that is closer to him than any other thing."

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى- الرَّحْمنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوى‌ فَقَالَ اسْتَوَى فِي كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَلَيْسَ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَقْرَبَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ لَمْ يَبْعُدْ مِنْهُ بَعِيدٌ وَ لَمْ يَقْرُبْ مِنْهُ قَرِيبٌ اسْتَوَى فِي كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ.

“No single thing is closer to Him than any other thing. The far is not far for Him and the close is not closer to Him. All are the same to Him.”

مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَوْ فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ أَوْ عَلَى شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَدْ كَفَرَ قُلْتُ فَسِّرْ لِي قَالَ أَعْنِي بِالْحَوَايَةِ مِنَ الشَّيْ‌ءِ لَهُ أَوْ بِإِمْسَاكٍ لَهُ أَوْ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ سَبَقَهُ وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَدْ جَعَلَهُ مُحْدَثاً وَ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَدْ جَعَلَهُ مَحْصُوراً وَ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ عَلَى شَيْ‌ءٍ فَقَدْ جَعَلَهُ مَحْمُول

He said, "I mean by 'from something' that He is contained by something, or held by something, or preceded by something." In another narration, he said, "Whoever claims that Allah is f

قَالَ أَبُو شَاكِرٍ الدَّيَصَانِيُّ- إِنَّ فِي الْقُرْآنِ آيَةً هِيَ قَوْلُنَا قُلْتُ مَا هِيَ فَقَالَ- وَ هُوَ الَّذِي فِي السَّماءِ إِلهٌ وَ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلهٌ‌ فَلَمْ أَدْرِ بِمَا أُجِيبُهُ فَحَجَجْتُ فَخَبَّرْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ‌ هَذَا كَلَامُ زِنْدِيقٍ خَبِيثٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتَ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْ لَهُ مَا اسْمُكَ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يَقُولُ فُلَانٌ فَقُلْ لَهُ مَا اسْمُكَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يَقُ

سَأَلَ الْجَاثَلِيقُ‌[1] أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَحْمِلُ الْعَرْشَ أَمِ الْعَرْشُ يَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَامِلُ الْعَرْشِ وَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ وَ مَا فِيهِمَا وَ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُمْسِكُ السَّماواتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ أَنْ تَزُولا وَ لَئِنْ زالَتا إِنْ أَمْسَكَهُما م

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَ عَزَّ- وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّماواتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ‌ فَقَالَ يَا فُضَيْلُ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فِي الْكُرْسِيِّ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَ الْأَرْضُ وَ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فِي الْكُرْسِيِ‌[2].

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, “His al-Kursi (the Throne) encompasses the heavens and earth.” He said, “O Fudayl everything is the al-Kursi (the Throne), the heavens and earth everything is in al-Kursi.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَ عَزَّ- وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّماواتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ‌ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَ الْأَرْضُ وَسِعْنَ الْكُرْسِيَّ أَمِ الْكُرْسِيُّ وَسِعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ فَقَالَ بَلِ الْكُرْسِيُّ وَسِعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ وَ الْعَرْشَ وَ كُلَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَسِعَ الْكُرْسِيُ‌[3].

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Hajjal form Tha‘labah ibn Maymun from Zurarah ibn ’a‘yun who has said the following. “I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.), ‘The heavens and the earth are (contained in His al-Kursi) under His dominion . .’ [2:255] Do the heavens and earth contain

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, ‘The heavens and the earth are (contained in His al-Kursi) under His dominion.. .’ (2:255) Do the heavens and earth contain the al-Kursi or that the latter contains the former?” He said that all things are contained in al-Kursi.”

حَمَلَةُ الْعَرْشِ وَ الْعَرْشُ الْعِلْمُ ثَمَانِيَةٌ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنَّا وَ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِمَّنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ‌[4].

“The carriers of al-‘Arsh (the Throne), al-‘Arsh and al-‘Ilm (knowledge) are eight. Four of these are from us and the rest are whoever Allah will chose.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ كانَ عَرْشُهُ‌ عَلَى الْماءِ[1] فَقَالَ مَا يَقُولُونَ قُلْتُ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الْعَرْشَ كَانَ عَلَى الْمَاءِ وَ الرَّبُّ فَوْقَهُ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا مَنْ زَعَمَ هَذَا فَقَدْ صَيَّرَ اللَّهَ مَحْمُولًا وَ وَصَفَهُ بِصِفَةِ الْمَخْلُوقِ وَ لَزِمَهُ أَنَّ الشَّيْ‌ءَ الَّذِي يَحْمِلُهُ أَقْوَى مِنْهُ قُلْتُ بَيِّنْ لِي جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ال

The Imam asked, “What do they say about it?” I said, “They say that al-‘Arsh (the Throne) was on the water and the Lord was on top of it.” The Imam then said, “They have said a lie. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الرُّوحِ الَّتِي فِي آدَمَ ع قَوْلِهِ‌ فَإِذا سَوَّيْتُهُ‌ وَ نَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي‌[2] قَالَ هَذِهِ رُوحٌ مَخْلُوقَةٌ وَ الرُّوحُ الَّتِي فِي عِيسَى مَخْلُوقَةٌ.

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the spirit (Ruh) which was in Adam as indicated in the Holy Quran, ‘When it is properly shaped and I have blown My Spirit into it (15:29).’” Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) replied, “This is a created spirit and the spirit in Jesus is created.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ رُوحٌ مِنْهُ‌ قَالَ هِيَ رُوحُ اللَّهِ مَخْلُوقَةٌ خَلَقَهَا اللَّهُ فِي آدَمَ وَ عِيسَى.

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, ‘The spirit from Him’. Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) replied, “It is the spirit (Ruh) from Allah created in Adam and Jesus.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ نَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي‌ كَيْفَ هَذَا النَّفْخُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الرُّوحَ مُتَحَرِّكٌ كَالرِّيحِ وَ إِنَّمَا سُمِّيَ رُوحاً لِأَنَّهُ اشْتَقَّ اسْمَهُ مِنَ الرِّيحِ وَ إِنَّمَا أَخْرَجَهُ عَنْ لَفْظَةِ الرِّيحِ لِأَنَّ الْأَرْوَاحَ‌ مُجَانِسَةٌ لِلرِّيحِ وَ إِنَّمَا أَضَافَهُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ لِأَنَّهُ اصْطَفَاهُ عَلَى سَائِرِ الْأَرْوَاحِ كَمَا قَ

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, ‘I have blown My Spirit into it (15:29)’” The Imam (a.s.) replied, “The spirit has motion like winds. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَمَّا يَرْوُونَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ آدَمَ عَلَى صُورَتِهِ فَقَالَ هِيَ صُورَةٌ مُحْدَثَةٌ مَخْلُوقَةٌ وَ اصْطَفَاهَا اللَّهُ وَ اخْتَارَهَا عَلَى سَائِرِ الصُّوَرِ الْمُخْتَلِفَةِ فَأَضَافَهَا إِلَى نَفْسِهِ كَمَا أَضَافَ الْكَعْبَةَ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ وَ الرُّوحَ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ فَقَالَ‌ بَيْتِيَ‌ وَ نَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي‌.

“I asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about what people narrate that Allah created Adam in His-own form.” The Imam (a.s.) replied, “It is created and newly invented form. Allah selected and chose it over the other various forms and gave His-own possessive case just like He has done so about Ka‘bah and the spirit saying, ‘

أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع اسْتَنْهَضَ النَّاسَ فِي حَرْبِ مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي الْمَرَّةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَلَمَّا حَشَدَ النَّاسُ‌[1] قَامَ خَطِيباً فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْوَاحِدِ الْأَحَدِ الصَّمَدِ الْمُتَفَرِّدِ الَّذِي‌[2] لَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ كَانَ وَ لَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ خَلَقَ مَا كَانَ قُدْرَةٌ[3] بَانَ بِهَا مِنَ الْأَشْيَاءِ وَ بَانَتِ الْأَشْيَاءُ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَتْ لَهُ صِفَةٌ تُنَالُ وَ لَا حَدٌّ تُضْرَبُ لَه

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُهُ وَ تَعَالَى ذِكْرُهُ وَ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَقَدَّسَ وَ تَفَرَّدَ وَ تَوَحَّدَ وَ لَمْ يَزَلْ وَ لَا يَزَالُ وَ هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ‌ وَ الْآخِرُ وَ الظَّاهِرُ وَ الْباطِنُ‌ فَلَا أَوَّلَ لِأَوَّلِيَّتِهِ رَفِيعاً فِي أَعْلَى عُلُوِّهِ شَامِخُ الْأَرْكَانِ رَفِيعُ الْبُنْيَانِ عَظِيمُ السُّلْطَانِ مُنِيفُ الْآلَاءِ سَنِيُّ الْعَلْيَاءِ الَّذِي عَجَزَ الْوَاصِفُونَ عَنْ كُنْهِ صِ

“Allah, the Most Holy is Whose name, the Most High is Whose praise, the Most Glorious are Whose attributes. He is the Most Sacred, the Most Holy, the only One in oneness. He is eternal, the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden. There is no beginning for Him. He is the Most Exalted in His highness. The Highes

ضَمَّنِي وَ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع‌[2] الطَّرِيقُ فِي مُنْصَرَفِي مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ وَ هُوَ سَائِرٌ إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَنِ اتَّقَى اللَّهَ يُتَّقَى وَ مَنْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ يُطَاعُ فَتَلَطَّفْتُ فِي الْوُصُولِ إِلَيْهِ‌[1] فَوَصَلْتُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا فَتْحُ مَنْ أَرْضَى الْخَالِقَ لَمْ يُبَالِ بِسَخَطِ الْمَخْلُوقِ وَ مَنْ أَسْخَطَ الْخَالِقَ فَ

“A road on my way back from Makkah to Khuransan joined me with Imam abu al-Hassan (a.s.) the 2nd who was going to Iraq and I heard him saying, “Whoever observes piety before Allah he is protected and whoever obeys Allah he is obeyed.” I calmly walked to him and on reaching him I offered my salutation and he responded l

بَيْنَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع يَخْطُبُ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ الْكُوفَةِ إِذْ قَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ- ذِعْلِبٌ‌[3] ذُو لِسَانٍ بَلِيغٍ فِي الْخُطَبِ شُجَاعُ الْقَلْبِ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هَلْ رَأَيْتَ رَبَّكَ قَالَ وَيْلَكَ يَا ذِعْلِبُ مَا كُنْتُ أَعْبُدُ رَبّاً لَمْ أَرَهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَهُ قَالَ وَيْلَكَ يَا ذِعْلِبُ لَمْ تَرَهُ الْعُيُونُ بِمُشَاهَدَةِ الْأ

“Once Imam Amirul Mu’minin addressed the people in the Mosque of Kufa from the pulpit and a man called dhi‘lab a very good orator and brave in heart said, “O Amirul Mu’minin, have you seen your Lord?” The Imam replied, “Fie upon you O Dhi‘lab, how would I worship a Lord whom I would not see?” The man said, “O Amirul Mu

دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَ عِيسَى شَلَقَانُ‌[4] عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَابْتَدَأَنَا فَقَالَ عَجَباً لِأَقْوَامٍ يَدَّعُونَ عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع مَا لَمْ يَتَكَلَّمْ بِهِ قَطُّ خَطَبَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع النَّاسَ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْمُلْهِمِ عِبَادَهُ حَمْدَهُ وَ فَاطِرِهِمْ عَلَى مَعْرِفَةِ رُبُوبِيَّتِهِ الدَّالِّ عَلَى وُجُودِهِ بِخَلْقِهِ وَ بِحُدُوثِ خَلْقِهِ عَلَى أَزَلِهِ وَ

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنَ التَّوْحِيدِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ بِخَطِّهِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْمُلْهِمِ عِبَادَهُ حَمْدَهُ. - وَ ذَكَرَ مِثْلَ مَا رَوَاهُ- سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ وَ قَمَعَ وُجُودُهُ جَوَائِلَ الْأَوْهَامِ ثُمَّ زَادَ فِيهِ أَوَّلُ الدِّيَانَةِ بِهِ مَعْرِفَتُهُ وَ كَمَالُ مَعْرِفَتِهِ تَوْحِيدُهُ وَ كَمَالُ تَوْحِيدِهِ نَفْيُ الصِّفَاتِ عَنْهُ بِشَهَادَةِ كُ

خَطَبَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع خُطْبَةً بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ فَعَجِبَ النَّاسُ مِنْ حُسْنِ صِفَتِهِ وَ مَا ذَكَرَهُ مِنْ تَعْظِيمِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ جَلَالُهُ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ فَقُلْتُ لِلْحَارِثِ أَ وَ مَا حَفِظْتَهَا قَالَ قَدْ كَتَبْتُهَا فَأَمْلَاهَا عَلَيْنَا مِنْ كِتَابِهِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَمُوتُ وَ لَا تَنْقَضِي عَجَائِبُهُ لِأَنَّهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ فِي شَأْنٍ مِنْ إِحْدَاثِ بَدِيعٍ لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِ

“A person asked Imam abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, “Everything will be destroyed except God. . .” (28:88) The Imam (a.s.) asked, “What do they say about it?” I replied, “They say that everything will perish except the face of Allah.” The Imam (a.s.) said, “Glory belongs to

مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِمَا أُمِرَ بِهِ مِنْ طَاعَةِ مُحَمَّدٍ ص فَهُوَ الْوَجْهُ الَّذِي لَا يَهْلِكُ وَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ‌ مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطاعَ اللَّهَ‌[2].

نَحْنُ الْمَثَانِي‌[3] الَّذِي أَعْطَاهُ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّنَا مُحَمَّداً ص وَ نَحْنُ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ نَتَقَلَّبُ فِي الْأَرْضِ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ وَ نَحْنُ عَيْنُ اللَّهِ فِي خَلْقِهِ وَ يَدُهُ الْمَبْسُوطَةُ بِالرَّحْمَةِ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ عَرَفَنَا مَنْ عَرَفَنَا وَ جَهِلَنَا مَنْ جَهِلَنَا وَ إِمَامَةَ الْمُتَّقِينَ‌[4].

نَحْنُ وَ اللَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى‌[1] الَّتِي لَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْعِبَادِ عَمَلًا إِلَّا بِمَعْرِفَتِنَا.

He (peace be upon him) said: "By Allah, we are the 'Most Beautiful Names' through which Allah does not accept any deeds from His servants except through knowing us."

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَنَا فَأَحْسَنَ خَلْقَنَا وَ صَوَّرَنَا فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَنَا وَ جَعَلَنَا عَيْنَهُ فِي عِبَادِهِ وَ لِسَانَهُ النَّاطِقَ‌[2] فِي خَلْقِهِ وَ يَدَهُ الْمَبْسُوطَةَ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ بِالرَّأْفَةِ وَ الرَّحْمَةِ وَ وَجْهَهُ الَّذِي يُؤْتَى مِنْهُ وَ بَابَهُ الَّذِي يَدُلُّ عَلَيْهِ وَ خُزَّانَهُ فِي سَمَائِهِ وَ أَرْضِهِ‌[3] بِنَا أَثْمَرَتِ الْأَشْجَارُ وَ أَيْنَعَتِ الثّ

He gave us our form and forme

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَا يَأْسَفُ كَأَسَفِنَا وَ لَكِنَّهُ خَلَقَ أَوْلِيَاءَ لِنَفْسِهِ يَأْسَفُونَ وَ يَرْضَوْنَ وَ هُمْ مَخْلُوقُونَ مَرْبُوبُونَ فَجَعَلَ رِضَاهُمْ رِضَا نَفْسِهِ وَ سَخَطَهُمْ سَخَطَ نَفْسِهِ لِأَنَّهُ جَعَلَهُمُ الدُّعَاةَ إِلَيْهِ وَ الْأَدِلَّاءَ عَلَيْهِ فَلِذَلِكَ صَارُوا كَذَلِكَ وَ لَيْسَ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ يَصِلُ إِلَى اللَّهِ كَمَا يَصِلُ إِلَى خَلْقِهِ لَكِنْ هَذَا مَعْنَى مَا قَالَ م

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَأَنْشَأَ يَقُولُ ابْتِدَاءً مِنْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ نَحْنُ حُجَّةُ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ بَابُ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ لِسَانُ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ وَ نَحْنُ عَيْنُ اللَّهِ فِي خَلْقِهِ وَ نَحْنُ وُلَاةُ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ فِي عِبَادِهِ.

“I was in the presence of Imam abu Ja‘far (a.s.), who began to speak without any question from me.” “We are the authority of Allah. We are the door to Allah. We are the tongue of Allah. We are the face of Allah. We are the eyes of Allah in His people. We are the authority in the commandments of Allah among His servants

أَنَا عَيْنُ اللَّهِ وَ أَنَا يَدُ اللَّهِ وَ أَنَا جَنْبُ اللَّهِ- وَ أَنَا بَابُ اللَّهِ.

“I heard Amirul Mu’minin Ali (a.s.) saying, ‘I am the eyes of Allah. I am the hands of Allah. I am the sides of Allah. I am the door to Allah.”

جَنْبُ اللَّهِ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع وَ كَذَلِكَ مَا كَانَ بَعْدَهُ مِنَ الْأَوْصِيَاءِ بِالْمَكَانِ الرَّفِيعِ إِلَى أَنْ يَنْتَهِيَ الْأَمْرُ إِلَى آخِرِهِمْ‌[2].

About the words of Allah “Woe to me because of my failure to fulfill my duties from the side of God. .” (39:56). The Imam (a.s.) said that the side of Allah is Amirul Mu’minin (a.s.) and so are the successors of the high position until the matters will reach to the last one among them.”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ‌ بِنَا عُبِدَ اللَّهُ وَ بِنَا عُرِفَ اللَّهُ وَ بِنَا وُحِّدَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى وَ مُحَمَّدٌ حِجَابُ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى‌[3].

“I heard Imam abu Ja‘far (a.s.) saying, ‘Through us Allah is worshipped. Through us Allah is known. Through us belief in the Oneness of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, is established. Muhammad is the Hijab (curtain) of Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High.”
