قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ مَنِ ائْتَمَنَ شَارِبَ الْخَمْرِ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ بَعْدَ عِلْمِهِ فِيهِ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ضَمَانٌ وَ لَا أَجْرٌ لَهُ وَ لَا خَلَفٌ.

شَهِدْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ هُوَ يُحَاسِبُ وَكِيلًا لَهُ وَ الْوَكِيلُ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ وَ اللَّهِ مَا خُنْتُ وَ اللَّهِ مَا خُنْتُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَا هَذَا خِيَانَتُكَ وَ تَضْيِيعُكَ عَلَيَّ مَالِي سَوَاءٌ لِأَنَّ الْخِيَانَةَ شَرُّهَا عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ هَرَبَ مِنْ رِزْقِهِ لَتَبِعَهُ حَتَّى يُدْرِكَهُ كَمَا أَنَّهُ إِنْ هَرَبَ مِنْ أَ

“I once saw abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), examine an account with his agent who very often said, ‘By Allah, I have not committed treachery, by Allah I have not committed treachery.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘O you, wasting my assets and your committing treachery is the same; the wickedness of treachery is on you.’ He

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّهُ قَدْ ذَهَبَ مَالِي وَ تَفَرَّقَ مَا فِي يَدِي وَ عِيَالِي كَثِيرٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذَا قَدِمْتَ الْكُوفَةَ فَافْتَحْ بَابَ حَانُوتِكَ وَ ابْسُطْ بِسَاطَكَ وَ ضَعْ مِيزَانَكَ وَ تَعَرَّضْ لِرِزْقِ رَبِّكَ‌[3] قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَنْ قَدِمَ فَتَحَ بَابَ حَانُوتِهِ وَ بَسَطَ بِسَاطَهُ وَ وَضَعَ مِيزَانَهُ قَالَ فَتَعَجَّبَ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ بِأَنْ لَيْسَ فِي بَيْتِهِ

كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ص خَلِيطٌ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَلَمَّا بُعِثَ ع لَقِيَهُ خَلِيطُهُ فَقَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ص جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ مِنْ خَلِيطٍ خَيْراً فَقَدْ كُنْتَ تُوَاتِي وَ لَا تُمَارِي فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ص وَ أَنْتَ فَجَزَاكَ اللَّهُ مِنْ خَلِيطٍ خَيْراً فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرُدُّ رِبْحاً وَ لَا تُمْسِكُ ضِرْساً[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, had an occasional companion from the time of ignorance. نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَنِ الْكَشُوفِ وَ هُوَ أَنْ تُضْرَبَ النَّاقَةُ وَ وَلَدُهَا طِفْلٌ‌[3] إِلَّا أَنْ يُتَصَدَّقَ بِوَلَدِهَا أَوْ يُذْبَحَ وَ نَهَى أَنْ يُنْزَى حِمَارٌ عَلَى عَتِيقَةٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited exposing a she-camel before a he-camel for breeding, unless the young is given in charity or is slaughtered as well as a donkey to leap (mount) over an

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ أَعْيَتْهُ الْقُدْرَةُ فَلْيُرَبِّ صَغِيراً. زَعَمَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى أَنَّ الْغِفَارِيَّ مِنْ وُلْدِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ‌[1].

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ص عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَ مَعَهُ ثَوْبٌ يَبِيعُهُ وَ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ طَوِيلًا وَ الثَّوْبُ قَصِيراً فَقَالَ لَهُ اجْلِسْ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْفَقُ لِسِلْعَتِكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once passed by a man who sold clothes. The man was tall and the cloth was short. He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Sit down; it is more useful for your commodity.”’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَشْكُونَ فِيهِ رَبَّهُمْ قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ يَشْكُونَ فِيهِ رَبَّهُمْ قَالَ يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ وَ اللَّهِ مَا رَبِحْتُ شَيْئاً مُنْذُ كَذَا وَ كَذَا وَ لَا آكُلُ وَ لَا أَشْرَبُ إِلَّا مِنْ رَأْسِ مَالِي وَيْحَكَ وَ هَلْ أَصْلُ مَالِكَ وَ ذِرْوَتُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ رَبِّكَ.

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ هُوَ لَكَ حَلَالٌ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ أَنَّهُ حَرَامٌ بِعَيْنِهِ فَتَدَعَهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ نَفْسِكَ وَ ذَلِكَ مِثْلُ الثَّوْبِ يَكُونُ قَدِ اشْتَرَيْتَهُ وَ هُوَ سَرِقَةٌ أَوِ الْمَمْلُوكِ عِنْدَكَ وَ لَعَلَّهُ‌ حُرٌّ قَدْ بَاعَ نَفْسَهُ أَوْ خُدِعَ فَبِيعَ أَوْ قُهِرَ أَوِ امْرَأَةٍ تَحْتَكَ وَ هِيَ أُخْتُكَ أَوْ رَضِيعَتُكَ وَ الْأَشْيَاءُ كُلُّهَا عَلَى هَذَا حَتَّى يَسْتَبِينَ لَكَ غَيْ

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘All things are lawful for you until you recognize it to be exactly an unlawful item which you must avoid from your own side. One such example is a cloth which you may have purchased and it is proved a stolen cloth; or a slave who is with you and perhaps he is free who has s

قُلْتُ لِلرِّضَا ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ رَوَوْا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ فِي طَرِيقٍ رَجَعَ فِي غَيْرِهِ فَكَذَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُ قَالَ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ وَ أَنَا أَفْعَلُهُ كَثِيراً فَافْعَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي أَمَا إِنَّهُ أَرْزَقُ لَكَ.

“I once asked al-Rida’ (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, people narrate that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, whenever he walked on a road would not return from the same, if this is how it was

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَا تُمَانِعُوا قَرْضَ الْخَمِيرِ وَ الْخُبْزِ وَ اقْتِبَاسَ النَّارِ فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلِبُ الرِّزْقَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ مَعَ مَا فِيهِ مِنْ مَكَارِمِ الْأَخْلَاقِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘You must not deny loaning yeast for bread-making and taking fire to start a fire; because it attracts sustenance to the family along with high moral manners.’”

سَاءَتْ حَالِي فَكَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع‌[2] فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ أَدِمْ قِرَاءَةَ- إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنا نُوحاً إِلى‌ قَوْمِهِ‌[3] قَالَ فَقَرَأْتُهَا حَوْلًا فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً فَكَتَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ أُخْبِرُهُ بِسُوءِ حَالِي وَ أَنِّي قَدْ قَرَأْتُ- إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنا نُوحاً إِلى‌ قَوْمِهِ‌ حَوْلًا كَمَا أَمَرْتَنِي وَ لَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً قَالَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ قَدْ وَفَى لَكَ الْحَوْلُ فَانْتَقِلْ مِنْهَا إِلَى قِرَاء

“I faced a difficult condition and wrote to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about it and he (the Imam) wrote to me, ‘Continue reading, “We sent Noah to his people ... to the end.’” (Chapter 71) I read it for one year but did not see any change. I wrote to him again to inform him (the Imam) of my difficult condition and that I have

قَدِمَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِإِبِلٍ لَهُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بِعْ لِي إِبِلِي هَذِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لَسْتُ بِبَيَّاعٍ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ قَالَ فَأَشِرْ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ بِعْ هَذَا الْجَمَلَ بِكَذَا وَ بِعْ هَذِهِ النَّاقَةَ بِكَذَا حَتَّى وَصَفَ لَهُ كُلَّ بَعِيرٍ مِنْهَا فَخَرَجَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ إِلَى السُّوقِ فَبَاعَهَا ثُمَّ جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَقَا

“Once an Arab came on his camel in the time of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, sell my (herd of) camels for me.’ The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy o

أَتَتِ الْمَوَالِي أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالُوا نَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْعَرَبَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ يُعْطِينَا مَعَهُمُ الْعَطَايَا بِالسَّوِيَّةِ وَ زَوَّجَ سَلْمَانَ وَ بِلَالًا وَ صُهَيْباً وَ أَبَوْا عَلَيْنَا هَؤُلَاءِ وَ قَالُوا لَا نَفْعَلُ فَذَهَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَكَلَّمَهُمْ فِيهِمْ فَصَاحَ الْأَعَارِيبُ أَبَيْنَا ذَلِكَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ أَبَيْنَا ذَلِكَ فَخَرَجَ

يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي النِّسَاءِ فَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص مِنَ النِّسَاءِ وَ أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي الطَّعَامِ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَأْكُلُ اللَّحْمَ وَ الْعَسَلَ.

“Sukayn al-Nakha‘iy worshipped and had given up women, perfume and food. He wrote to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and asked him (the Imam) about it. He (the Imam) wrote to him in answer, ‘About your words concerning women, take notice about the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ جُعِلَ قُرَّةُ عَيْنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَ لَذَّتِي فِي الدُّنْيَا النِّسَاءُ وَ رَيْحَانَتَيَّ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The delight of my eyes is placed in Salat (prayer), my enjoyment of the world in women and my comfort and relief with al-Hassan and al-Husayn (a.s.).”’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَوْ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص‌ النِّسَاءُ أَرْبَعٌ جَامِعٌ مُجْمِعٌ وَ رَبِيعٌ مُرْبِعٌ وَ كَرْبٌ مُقْمِعٌ وَ غُلٌّ قَمِلٌ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, or ‘Amir al- Mu’minin has said, ‘Women are of four kinds: a universal goodness, a fountain of breeding, an oppressive over-burdening or feed for parasites.”’

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ جَلَسْنَا إِلَيْهِ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَتَذَاكَرْنَا أَمْرَ النِّسَاءِ فَأَكْثَرْنَا الْخَوْضَ وَ هُوَ سَاكِتٌ لَا يَدْخُلُ فِي حَدِيثِنَا بِحَرْفٍ فَلَمَّا سَكَتْنَا قَالَ أَمَّا الْحَرَائِرُ فَلَا تَذْكُرُوهُنَّ وَ لَكِنْ‌ خَيْرُ الْجَوَارِي مَا كَانَ لَكَ فِيهَا هَوًى وَ كَانَ لَهَا عَقْلٌ وَ أَدَبٌ فَلَسْتَ تَحْتَاجُ إِلَى أَنْ تَأْمُرَ وَ لَا تَنْهَى

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَ لَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشِرَارِ نِسَائِكُمْ الذَّلِيلَةُ فِي أَهْلِهَا الْعَزِيزَةُ مَعَ بَعْلِهَا الْعَقِيمُ الْحَقُودُ الَّتِي لَا تَوَرَّعُ مِنْ قَبِيحٍ الْمُتَبَرِّجَةُ إِذَا غَابَ عَنْهَا بَعْلُهَا الْحَصَانُ مَعَهُ إِذَا حَضَرَ[3] لَا تَسْمَعُ قَوْلَهُ وَ لَا تُطِيعُ أَمْرَهُ وَ إِذَا خَلَا بِهَا بَعْلُهَا تَمَنَّعَتْ مِنْهُ كَمَا تَمَنَّعُ الصَّعْبَةُ عَنْ رُكُوبِهَا ل

‘If you like I can tell you who are of the worst kind of your women. She is the one who is undignified in her family, flattered by her husband, barren, spiteful, who does not abstain from indecency, roams around to show off in the absence of her husband and very reserved when her husband is present. She does not listen

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ خَيْرُ نِسَاءٍ رَكِبْنَ الرِّحَالَ نِسَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ أَحْنَاهُ عَلَى وَلَدٍ وَ خَيْرُهُنَّ لِزَوْجٍ‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The best of women who ever rode a camel on their wedding to the house of their husband are the women of Quraysh who are most compassionate to their chil

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ خَيْرُ نِسَائِكُمْ نِسَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ أَلْطَفُهُنَّ بِأَزْوَاجِهِنَّ وَ أَرْحَمُهُنَّ بِأَوْلَادِهِنَّ الْمُجُونُ لِزَوْجِهَا[3] الْحَصَانُ لِغَيْرِهِ قُلْنَا وَ مَا الْمُجُونُ قَالَ الَّتِي لَا تَمَنَّعُ.

“‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The best of your women are the women of Quraysh who are very kind to their husbands, most compassionate to their children, al-Majun with her husband

خَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ ص- أُمَّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي مُصَابَةٌ فِي حَجْرِي أَيْتَامٌ وَ لَا يَصْلُحُ لَكَ إِلَّا امْرَأَةٌ فَارِغَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَا رَكِبَ الْإِبِلَ مِثْلُ نِسَاءِ قُرَيْشٍ أَحْنَاهُ عَلَى وَلَدٍ وَ لَا أَرْعَى عَلَى زَوْجٍ فِي ذَاتِ يَدَيْهِ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja 5 far or abu ‘Abd Allah) (a.s.), has said, ‘When the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, proposed for marriage to ‘Umm Haniy daughter of abu Talib, she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am a grieved widow and I have orph

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ مَا اسْتَفَادَ امْرُؤٌ مُسْلِمٌ فَائِدَةً بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ زَوْجَةٍ مُسْلِمَةٍ تَسُرُّهُ إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَ تُطِيعُهُ إِذَا أَمَرَهَا وَ تَحْفَظُهُ إِذَا غَابَ عَنْهَا فِي نَفْسِهَا وَ مَالِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘There is not anything more beneficial to a man after his accepting Islam than a Muslim woman who pleases him when he looks at her, gives when he asks and prot

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَ‌ إِذَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَجْمَعَ لِلْمُسْلِمِ خَيْرَ الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ جَعَلْتُ لَهُ قَلْباً خَاشِعاً وَ لِسَاناً ذَاكِراً وَ جَسَداً عَلَى الْبَلَاءِ صَابِراً وَ زَوْجَةً مُؤْمِنَةً تَسُرُّهُ إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَ تَحْفَظُهُ إِذَا غَابَ عَنْهَا فِي نَفْسِهَا وَ مَالِهِ.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ تَزَوَّجُوا وَ زَوِّجُوا أَلَا فَمِنْ حَظِّ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ إِنْفَاقُ قِيمَةِ أَيِّمَةٍ[2] وَ مَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ بَيْتٍ يُعْمَرُ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ بِالنِّكَاحِ وَ مَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَبْغَضَ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ بَيْتٍ يُخْرَبُ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ بِالْفُرْقَةِ يَعْنِي الطَّلَاقَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِ

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Safwan ibn Mehran who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ رُذَالُ مَوْتَاكُمُ الْعُزَّابُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The worthless dead among you are the unmarried ones.’”

لَمَّا لَقِيَ يُوسُفُ ع أَخَاهُ قَالَ يَا أَخِي كَيْفَ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَزَوَّجَ النِّسَاءَ بَعْدِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي أَمَرَنِي قَالَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَكَ ذُرِّيَّةٌ تُثْقِلُ الْأَرْضَ بِالتَّسْبِيحِ فَافْعَلْ.

‘When Yusuf met his brother, he asked, “How did you marry women after me?” He replied, “My father commanded me to do so and said, ‘If you can have so many children who will load the earth heavily with Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects), then you must do so.”””

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ تَزَوَّجُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَتَّبِعَ سُنَّتِي فَإِنَّ مِنْ سُنَّتِيَ التَّزْوِيجَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘You must become married because the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Whoever wants to follow my Sunnah, must take notice that of my Sunnah is marriage.’

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ زَوْجَةٍ فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ أَبِي وَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِيَ الدُّنْيَا وَ مَا فِيهَا وَ أَنِّي بِتُّ لَيْلَةً وَ لَيْسَتْ لِي زَوْجَةٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ الرَّكْعَتَانِ يُصَلِّيهِمَا رَجُلٌ مُتَزَوِّجٌ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ رَجُلٍ أَعْزَبَ يَقُومُ لَيْلَهُ وَ يَصُومُ نَهَارَهُ ثُمَّ أَعْطَاهُ أَبِي سَبْعَةَ دَنَانِيرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ تَزَوَّجْ بِهَذِهِ ثُمَّ قَ

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated and others have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy form ibn Faddal and Ja’far ibn Muhammad from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Once, a man came to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he (the Imam) asked, ‘Are you married?’ The man replied, ‘No, I am not married.’ My fat

مَنْ تَرَكَ التَّزْوِيجَ مَخَافَةَ الْعَيْلَةِ فَقَدْ أَسَاءَ بِاللَّهِ الظَّنَّ.

“One who neglects marriage for fear of failure to feed his family has become distrustful of Allah.”’

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَقَالَ تَزَوَّجْ فَتَزَوَّجَ فَوُسِّعَ عَلَيْهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and complained about his financial condition. He (the Messenger of Allah) told him to become married and he did so after which he became affluent.’”

أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص شَابٌّ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ تَزَوَّجْ فَقَالَ الشَّابُّ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ أَعُودَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَلَحِقَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِي بِنْتاً وَسِيمَةً[1] فَزَوَّجَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ فَوَسَّعَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ [قَالَ‌] فَأَتَى الشَّابُّ النَّبِيَّ ص فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ عَلَيْكُمْ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a young man from al-Ansar (people of al- Madinah) came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and complained about his needs. قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْحَدِيثُ الَّذِي يَرْوِيهِ النَّاسُ حَقٌّ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ص فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَأَمَرَهُ بِالتَّزْوِيجِ فَفَعَلَ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَأَمَرَهُ بِالتَّزْوِيجِ حَتَّى أَمَرَهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع [نَعَمْ‌] هُوَ حَقٌّ ثُمَّ قَالَ الرِّزْقُ مَعَ النِّسَاءِ وَ الْعِيَالِ.

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the truth in Hadith which people narrate that a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and complained about his financial condition. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ تَرَكَ التَّزْوِيجَ مَخَافَةَ الْعَيْلَةِ فَقَدْ أَسَاءَ ظَنَّهُ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- إِنْ يَكُونُوا فُقَراءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ‌[1].

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One who neglects marriage because of his fear to feed his dependents has become cynical about Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, who has said, “If they

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ اخْتَارُوا لِنُطَفِكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْخَالَ أَحَدُ الضَّجِيعَيْنِ.

Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Choose for your seed (the best ground) thus, maternal uncle is one of the two bedfellows (close associates).”’

قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص خَطِيباً فَقَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِيَّاكُمْ وَ خَضْرَاءَ الدِّمَنِ‌[1] قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ مَا خَضْرَاءُ الدِّمَنِ قَالَ الْمَرْأَةُ الْحَسْنَاءُ فِي مَنْبِتِ السَّوْءِ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, one day stood up to give a speech and said, ‘O people, I warn you against Khadra’ al-Deman (a green plant that grows on the dump-site).’ It was asked, ‘What is Khadra’ al- Deman O Messenger of Allah?’

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي ابْنَةَ عَمٍّ قَدْ رَضِيتُ جَمَالَهَا وَ حُسْنَهَا وَ دِينَهَا وَ لَكِنَّهَا عَاقِرٌ فَقَالَ لَا تَزَوَّجْهَا إِنَّ يُوسُفَ بْنَ يَعْقُوبَ لَقِيَ أَخَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَخِي كَيْفَ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَتَزَوَّجَ النِّسَاءَ بَعْدِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي أَمَرَنِي وَ قَالَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَكَ ذُرِّيَّةٌ تُثْقِلُ الْأَرْضَ بِالتَّسْبِيحِ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said, “O the Holy Prophet of Allah, I have the daughter of an uncle whose beauty, goodness and religion I like; but she is barren.’” He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘You must not marry her; Yusuf after meeting his brother asked him, “How

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ تَزَوَّجُوا بِكْراً وَلُوداً وَ لَا تَزَوَّجُوا حَسْنَاءَ جَمِيلَةً عَاقِراً فَإِنِّي أُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْأُمَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must marry virgin and child bearing women, but you must not marry good a looking but barren woman because I will express pride because of you among nati

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لِرَجُلٍ تَزَوَّجْهَا سَوْءَاءَ وَلُوداً وَ لَا تَزَوَّجْهَا حَسْنَاءَ عَاقِراً فَإِنِّي مُبَاهٍ بِكُمُ الْأُمَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَ وَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْوِلْدَانَ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ لآِبَائِهِمْ يَحْضُنُهُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَ تُرَبِّيهِمْ سَارَةُ فِي جَبَلٍ مِنْ مِسْكٍ وَ عَنْبَرٍ وَ زَعْفَرَانٍ.

“Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once said to a man, ‘Marry al-Su’a’ and child bearing woman but do not marry a good looking barren woman. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ تَزَوَّجُوا الْأَبْكَارَ فَإِنَّهُنَّ أَطْيَبُ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَفْوَاهاً وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ وَ أَنْشَفُهُ أَرْحَاماً وَ أَدَرُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَخْلَافاً وَ أَفْتَحُ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَرْحَاماً أَ مَا عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي أُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْأُمَمَ- يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حَتَّى بِالسِّقْطِ يَظَلُّ مُحْبَنْطِئاً عَلَى بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ[1] فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ فَيَقُولُ لَا أَدْخُلُ حَتَّى ي

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Marry virgins; they are of the finest mouth.’ In another Hadith it is said that, their uterus most dry, their posterior most round, and their womb most

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ص إِذَا أَرَادَ تَزْوِيجَ امْرَأَةٍ بَعَثَ مَنْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا وَ يَقُولُ لِلْمَبْعُوثَةِ شَمِّي لِيتَهَا فَإِنْ طَابَ لِيتُهَا طَابَ عَرْفُهَا وَ انْظُرِي كَعْبَهَا فَإِنْ دَرِمَ كَعْبُهَا عَظُمَ كَعْثَبُهَا[2].

“When the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, wanted to marry a woman he would send a woman to examine her with the instruction, ‘Smell her neck; if it smells fine her scent smells fine, and if her soles are full, her knees are large.’”

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ص رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَحْمِلُ أَعْظَمَ مَا يَحْمِلُ الرِّجَالُ فَهَلْ يَصْلُحُ لِي أَنْ آتِيَ بَعْضَ مَا لِي مِنَ الْبَهَائِمِ نَاقَةً أَوْ حِمَارَةً فَإِنَّ النِّسَاءَ لَا يَقْوَيْنَ عَلَى مَا عِنْدِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى لَمْ يَخْلُقْكَ حَتَّى خَلَقَ لَكَ مَا يَحْتَمِلُكَ مِنْ شَكْلِكَ فَانْصَرَفَ الرَّجُلُ وَ لَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ عَادَ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I carry the largest thing that man carry, if I can make use of the animals that I own, like a donkey or she-camel, be

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمْ يَتْرُكْ شَيْئاً مِمَّا يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ إِلَّا عَلَّمَهُ نَبِيَّهُ ص فَكَانَ مِنْ تَعْلِيمِهِ إِيَّاهُ أَنَّهُ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ جَبْرَئِيلَ أَتَانِي عَنِ اللَّطِيفِ الْخَبِيرِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْأَبْكَارَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الثَّمَرِ عَلَى الشَّجَرِ إِذَا أَدْرَكَ ثَمَرُهُ فَلَمْ يُجْتَنَى أَفْسَدَتْهُ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has taught to His Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, everything that is needed. Of such teachings is what he spoke one day from the pulpit. He (the Messenger of Allah) praised

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع إِذَا أَتَاهُ خَتَنُهُ عَلَى ابْنَتِهِ أَوْ عَلَى أُخْتِهِ بَسَطَ لَهُ رِدَاءَهُ ثُمَّ أَجْلَسَهُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مَرْحَباً بِمَنْ كَفَى الْمَئُونَةَ وَ سَتَرَ الْعَوْرَةَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), would spread his gown as furnishing when the husband of his daughter or sister would come to him (the Imam) and would say, ‘Welcome to the one who has taken good care of a need and the one who protected the privacy.’”

أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ص فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عِنْدِي مَهِيرَةُ الْعَرَبِ وَ أَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَقْبَلَهَا وَ هِيَ ابْنَتِي قَالَ فَقَالَ قَدْ قَبِلْتُهَا قَالَ فَأُخْرَى‌[2] يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَ مَا هِيَ قَالَ لَمْ يَضْرِبْ عَلَيْهَا صُدْغٌ قَطُّ[3] قَالَ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهَا وَ لَكِنْ زَوِّجْهَا مِنْ جِلْبِيبٍ‌[4] قَالَ فَسَقَطَ رِجْلَا الرَّجُلِ مِمَّا دَخَلَهُ‌[5] ثُمَّ أَتَى أُمَّهَا فَأَخْبَر

Certain persons of our people have narrated from Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Salih al-Taymuliy from Ayyub ibn Nuh from Muhammad ibn Sinan from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص زَوَّجَ- مِقْدَادَ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ ضُبَاعَةَ ابْنَةَ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَ إِنَّمَا زَوَّجَهُ لِتَتَّضِعَ الْمَنَاكِحُ وَ لِيَتَأَسَّوْا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ لِيَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ أَكْرَمَهُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاهُمْ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, arranged a marriage between Miqdad ibn al-Aswad and Duba‘ah daughter of al-Zubayr ibn ‘ Abd al-Muttalib. إِنَّمَا زَوَّجَهَا الْمِقْدَادَ لِتَتَّضِعَ الْمَنَاكِحُ وَ لِيَتَأَسَّوْا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص وَ لِتَعْلَمُوا أَنَ‌ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقاكُمْ‌ وَ كَانَ الزُّبَيْرُ أَخَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ لِأَبِيهِمَا وَ أُمِّهِمَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, arranged a marriage between Miqdad ibn al-Aswad and Duba‘ah daughter of al-Zubayr ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘He (the Messenger of Allah) arra

مَرَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ شَيْبَانِيٌّ يُقَالُ لَهُ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ حَرْمَلَةَ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَ لَكَ أُخْتٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَتُزَوِّجُنِيهَا قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَمَضَى الرَّجُلُ وَ تَبِعَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ وَ هُوَ سَيِّدُ قَ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a man from Basrah, a Shaybaniy man called ‘Abd al- Malik ibn Harmalah visited Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.). Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), asked, ‘Do you have a sister? He replied, ‘Yes, I have a sister.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘Will you give her in marriage to me?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I agr

كَانَ لِعَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ عَيْنٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَكْتُبُ إِلَيْهِ بِأَخْبَارِ مَا يَحْدُثُ فِيهَا وَ إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَعْتَقَ جَارِيَةً ثُمَّ تَزَوَّجَهَا فَكَتَبَ الْعَيْنُ‌ إِلَى عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ فَكَتَبَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي تَزْوِيجُكَ مَوْلَاتَكَ وَ قَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَكْفَائِكَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ مَنْ تَمَجَّدُ ب

“‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan had a spy in al-Madinah who reported to him from time to time about things that happened there. Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), set free one of his slave-girls and then married with her. The spy reported this to ‘Abd al-Malik who wrote to Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), in a letter that said, ‘Thereafter,
