“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about my exposure in the open, under the sky because of which my clothes become wet, while I have experienced sexual relation, and such clothes reach the part of my body which is polluted with semen, can I perform Salah (prayer) in such clothes? إِذَا احْتَلَمَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَصَابَ ثَوْبَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَلْيَغْسِلِ الَّذِي أَصَابَهُ وَ إِنْ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ أَصَابَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ وَ لَمْ يَسْتَيْقِنْ وَ لَمْ يَرَ مَكَانَهُ فَلْيَنْضَحْهُ بِالْمَاءِ[3] وَ إِنْ يَسْتَيْقِنْ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ وَ لَمْ يَرَ مَكَانَهُ فَلْيَغْسِلْ ثَوْبَهُ كُلَّهُ فَإِنَّهُ أَحْسَنُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man experiences wet dream and his clothes come in contact with semen, he must wash the polluted area. سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا نَرَى فِي الْمَذْيِ وُضُوءاً وَ لَا غَسْلًا مَا أَصَابَ الثَّوْبَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا فِي الْمَاءِ الْأَكْبَرِ[5].

“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘Wudu’ is not necessary because of al-Madhiy (the pre-seminal fluid) nor is washing clothes which may have come in contact with it unless it is the major discharge of (semen).”’

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about urine that pollutes one’s body. He (the Imam) said, Tour water on it twice; it is water.’ I then asked about urine, which pollutes one’s clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘Wash it twice.’ I then asked him about the urine of a child that pollutes one’s clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘

قُلْتُ لِلرِّضَا ع الطِّنْفِسَةُ[1] وَ الْفِرَاشُ يُصِيبُهُمَا الْبَوْلُ كَيْفَ يُصْنَعُ بِهِمَا وَ هُوَ ثَخِينٌ كَثِيرُ الْحَشْوِ قَالَ يُغْسَلُ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهُ فِي وَجْهِهِ‌[2].

“I once asked al-Rida (a.s.), about how one should deal with velvet-like carpet and the beds that come in contact with urine, which are thick and bulky. He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever is on the surface of such items must be washed clean.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الثَّوْبِ يُصِيبُهُ الْبَوْلُ فَيَنْفُذُ إِلَى الْجَانِبِ الْآخَرِ وَ عَنِ الْفَرْوِ[3] وَ مَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَشْوِ قَالَ اغْسِلْ مَا أَصَابَ مِنْهُ وَ مَسَّ الْجَانِبَ الْآخَرَ[4] فَإِنْ أَصَبْتَ مَسَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنْهُ فَاغْسِلْهُ وَ إِلَّا فَانْضِحْهُ بِالْمَاءِ.

‘You must wash the polluted area, feel the other side and wash it clean, if you found something; otherwise, pour water on it to wash it clean.’”

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may urinate but do not find water, my hands have come in contact with urine and I wipe it against the wall or soil. Then it perspires and I wipe my face with it or other parts of my body or my clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

فِي كِتَابِ سَمَاعَةَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنْ أَصَابَ الثَّوْبَ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنْ بَوْلِ السِّنَّوْرِ فَلَا تَصِحُّ الصَّلَاةُ فِيهِ حَتَّى تَغْسِلَهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If clothes come in contact with the urine of cats, performing Salah (prayer) with such clothes is not valid until they are washed.’”

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the urine of a child. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must just pour water on it but if the child eats food, wash it clean, and a baby boy or baby girl are the same.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي أَغْدُو إِلَى السُّوقِ فَأَحْتَاجُ إِلَى الْبَوْلِ وَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي مَاءٌ ثُمَّ أَتَمَسَّحُ وَ أَتَنَشَّفُ بِيَدِي ثُمَّ أَمْسَحُهَا بِالْحَائِطِ وَ بِالْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ أَحُكُّ جَسَدِي بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may go to market place and need to urinate but do not find water. I then wipe it dry, then wipe my hand against the wall or ground, and scratch with it my body afterwards. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَدْخُلُ الْخَلَاءَ وَ فِي يَدِي خَاتَمٌ فِيهِ اسْمٌ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى قَالَ لَا[4] وَ لَا تُجَامِعْ فِيهِ. - وَ رُوِيَ أَيْضاً أَنَّهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَسْتَنْجِيَ مِنَ الْخَلَاءِ فَلْيُحَوِّلْهُ مِنَ الْيَدِ الَّتِي يَسْتَنْجِي بِهَا.

“I once said to abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I enter the toilet area and there is a ring on my hand with a name of the names of Allah, most High. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ أَلْبَانِ الْإِبِلِ وَ الْغَنَمِ وَ الْبَقَرِ وَ أَبْوَالِهَا وَ لُحُومِهَا فَقَالَ لَا تَوَضَّأْ مِنْهُ إِنْ أَصَابَكَ مِنْهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَوْ ثَوْباً لَكَ فَلَا تَغْسِلْهُ إِلَّا أَنْ تَتَنَظَّفَ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَبْوَالِ الدَّوَابِّ وَ الْبِغَالِ وَ الْحَمِيرِ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْلَمْ مَكَانَهُ فَاغْسِلِ الثَّوْبَ كُلَّهُ وَ إِنْ شَكَكْتَ فَانْضِحْهُ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘What do you say about the urine of animals and their dung?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Because of their urine you must wash and their dung is more than that.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي أُعَالِجُ الدَّوَابَّ فَرُبَّمَا خَرَجْتُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَ قَدْ بَالَتْ وَ رَاثَتْ فَيَضْرِبُ أَحَدُهَا بِرِجْلِهِ أَوْ يَدِهِ فَيَنْضِحُ عَلَى ثِيَابِي فَأُصْبِحُ فَأَرَى أَثَرَهُ فِيهِ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ شَيْ‌ءٌ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I deal with animals. Some times I go out during the night, and animals may have urinated and dunged and they spread it with their legs which pollutes my clothes; and in the morning I find the marks.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You are not required to do anything.’”

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ هُوَ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ لِي قَائِدِي إِنَّ فِي ثَوْبِهِ دَماً فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ قَائِدِي أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ بِثَوْبِكَ دَماً فَقَالَ لِي إِنَّ بِي دَمَامِيلَ وَ لَسْتُ أَغْسِلُ ثَوْبِي حَتَّى تَبْرَأَ.

سَأَلْتُهُ‌[4] عَنِ الرَّجُلِ بِهِ الْقَرْحُ أَوِ الْجُرْحُ وَ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَرْبِطَهُ وَ لَا يَغْسِلَ دَمَهُ قَالَ يُصَلِّي وَ لَا يَغْسِلُ ثَوْبَهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ إِلَّا مَرَّةً فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ ثَوْبَهُ كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man on whose body there are sores or wounds which he cannot bandage or wash the blood. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can perform his Salah (prayer) without washing his clothes except once a day; he cannot wash his clothes every hour.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ الدَّمُ يَكُونُ فِي الثَّوْبِ عَلَيَّ وَ أَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ إِنْ رَأَيْتَ وَ عَلَيْكَ ثَوْبٌ غَيْرُهُ فَاطْرَحْهُ وَ صَلِّ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ غَيْرُهُ فَامْضِ فِي صَلَاتِكَ وَ لَا إِعَادَةَ عَلَيْكَ مَا لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى مِقْدَارِ الدِّرْهَمِ وَ مَا كَانَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَلَيْسَ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ رَأَيْتَهُ قَبْلُ أَوْ لَمْ تَرَهُ وَ إِذَا كُنْتَ قَدْ رَأَيْتَهُ وَ هُوَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ مِقْدَ

“I once said to him (the Imam), ‘I may find blood on my clothes when I am performing Salah (prayer).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you find blood and you have other clothes on you, you must remove it and complete your Salah (prayer). إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ع كَانَ لَا يَرَى بَأْساً بِدَمٍ مَا لَمْ يُذَكَ‌[2] يَكُونُ فِي الثَّوْبِ فَيُصَلِّي فِيهِ الرَّجُلُ يَعْنِي دَمَ السَّمَكِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Ali (a.s.), would not consider the blood of things that did not require slaughtering as harmful to one’s Salah (prayer). That is, the blood of fish.’”

سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَسِيلُ مِنْ أَنْفِهِ الدَّمُ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ بَاطِنَهُ يَعْنِي جَوْفَ الْأَنْفِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about a man from whose nostril blood flows. ‘Is he required to wash inside of his nostril?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He only needs to wash what is apparent.’”

“Once a mother of the child of his father asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I like to ask you a question but I feel shy.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Ask and do not feel shy.’ She said, ‘There was blood from Hayd (menses) on my clothes and I washed it, but the sta

قَالَ: دَمُكَ أَنْظَفُ مِنْ دَمِ غَيْرِكَ إِذَا كَانَ فِي ثَوْبِكَ شِبْهُ النَّضْحِ مِنْ دَمِكَ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ إِنْ كَانَ دَمُ غَيْرِكَ قَلِيلًا أَوْ كَثِيراً فَاغْسِلْهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that your blood to you is less unclean than other people’s blood. If you find like sprinkles of your blood on you, it is not harmful; but if it is other people’s blood, regardless of its being of a small or large quantity, you must wash it clean.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ دَمِ الْبَرَاغِيثِ يَكُونُ فِي الثَّوْبِ هَلْ يَمْنَعُهُ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فِيهِ قَالَ لَا وَ إِنْ كَثُرَ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَيْضاً بِشِبْهِهِ مِنَ الرُّعَافِ يَنْضِحُهُ وَ لَا يَغْسِلُهُ. - وَ رُوِيَ أَيْضاً أَنَّهُ لَا يُغْسَلُ بِالرِّيقِ شَيْ‌ءٌ إِلَّا الدَّمُ.

‘It is not harmful even if they are many. So also is the case with similar things, like sprinkled nostril blood which one does not have to wash.’” “It is narrated also that things cannot be washed with saliva except blood (inside one’s mouth).”’

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ ع‌[1] هَلْ يَجْرِي دَمُ الْبَقِ‌[2] مَجْرَى دَمِ الْبَرَاغِيثِ وَ هَلْ يَجُوزُ لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يَقِيسَ بِدَمِ الْبَقِّ عَلَى الْبَرَاغِيثِ فَيُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ وَ أَنْ يَقِيسَ عَلَى نَحْوِ هَذَا فَيَعْمَلَ بِهِ فَوَقَّعَ ع يَجُوزُ الصَّلَاةُ وَ الطُّهْرُ مِنْهُ أَفْضَلُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man whose body is polluted because of a dog. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must wash clean the area which has come in contact with a dog.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْفَأْرَةِ الرَّطْبَةِ قَدْ وَقَعَتْ فِي الْمَاءِ تَمْشِي عَلَى الثِّيَابِ أَ يُصَلَّى فِيهَا قَالَ اغْسِلْ مَا رَأَيْتَ مِنْ أَثَرِهَا وَ مَا لَمْ تَرَهُ فَانْضِحْهُ بِالْمَاءِ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a mouse that has fallen in water and then walks on clothes. Can one perform Salah (prayer) in such clothes? He (the Imam) said, ‘Wash to clean the marks that you find and what you do not find just pour water on them.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ هَلْ يَحِلُّ أَنْ يَمَسَ‌[1] الثَّعْلَبَ وَ الْأَرْنَبَ أَوْ شَيْئاً مِنَ السِّبَاعِ حَيّاً أَوْ مَيِّتاً قَالَ لَا يَضُرُّهُ وَ لَكِنْ يَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ‌[2].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if it is permissible to touch a fox, jackal or such other beasts dead or alive. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful but he must wash his hand.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَقَعُ ثَوْبُهُ عَلَى جَسَدِ الْمَيِّتِ قَالَ إِنْ كَانَ غُسِّلَ فَلَا تَغْسِلْ مَا أَصَابَ ثَوْبَكَ مِنْهُ وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَمْ يُغَسَّلْ فَاغْسِلْ مَا أَصَابَ ثَوْبَكَ مِنْهُ يَعْنِي إِذَا بَرَدَ الْمَيِّتُ‌[3].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man whose clothes fall on a dead body. He (the Imam) said, ‘If the dead body is given Ghusl (bath), then it is not necessary to wash such clothes, but if it is not given Ghusl (bath) yet, one must wash such clothes - and that is, when the dead body has become cold.’”

He (the Imam) said, ‘If he has already begun his Salah (prayer) he must continue; but if he has not yet began his Salah (prayer),

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ التَّيَمُّمِ فَضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ الْأَرْضَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَهَا فَنَفَضَهَا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِهَا جَبِينَيْهِ وَ كَفَّيْهِ مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً[4].

“I once asked Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about Tayammum. He (the Imam) thumped his hands on the ground then raised them, and allowed loose soil to fall off them. He (the Imam) then wiped both (sections of) his forehead (the parts above both eyebrows) and (the back of) his palms (hands) only once.”
