Chapter 65 – the Time for Night Prayer

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ شَيْئاً حَتَّى يَنْتَصِفَ اللَّيْلُ‌[2].

Hadith.1375 - Ubayd ibn Zurarah narrated from Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) that He said: "The Messenger of Allah (sw), after performing the Isha prayer, would retire to his bed and would not perform any additional prayer until midnight."

وَ قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ[3] لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنِّي مَكَثْتُ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً أَنْوِي الْقِيَامَ فَلَا أَقُومُ أَ فَأُصَلِّي أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ لَا اقْضِ بِالنَّهَارِ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُتَّخَذَ ذَلِكَ خُلُقاً[4].

Hadith.1377 - Umar ibn Hanzalah said to Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as): "I have spent eighteen nights intending to rise (for the night prayer) but did not get up. Should I then pray at the beginning of the night?" He (as) replied: "No, make it up during the day, for I dislike it becoming a habitual practice."

قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ مَوَالِيكَ مِنْ صُلَحَائِهِمْ شَكَا إِلَيَّ مَا يَلْقَى مِنَ النَّوْمِ وَ قَالَ لِي إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الْقِيَامَ لِصَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَيَغْلِبُنِي النَّوْمُ حَتَّى أُصْبِحَ فَرُبَّمَا قَضَيْتُ صَلَاتِي الشَّهْرَ الْمُتَتَابِعَ أَوِ الشَّهْرَيْنِ أَصْبِرُ عَلَى‌ ثِقَلِهِ فَقَالَ قُرَّةُ عَيْنٍ وَ اللَّهِ قُرَّةُ عَيْنٍ وَ اللَّهِ وَ لَمْ يُرَخِّصْ فِي الْوَتْرِ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ الْ

Hadith.1378 - It is reported from Mu'awiyah ibn Wahb that He said: "I said to him (Abu Abdullah (as)): 'One of your followers, who is among your righteous adherents, complained to me about the difficulty he experiences with sleep. He said to me: ‘I wish to rise for the night prayer (salat al-layl), but sleep overcomes

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي الصَّيْفِ فِي اللَّيَالِي الْقِصَارِ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ نِعْمَ مَا رَأَيْتَ وَ نِعْمَ مَا صَنَعْتَ. يَعْنِي فِي السَّفَرِ[2].

"I asked Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq (as) about praying the night prayer during the summer, when the nights are short, and performing it at the beginning of the night. Imam (as) said: 'Yes, what you have considered is good, and what you have done is good.'"

وَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَخَافُ الْجَنَابَةَ فِي السَّفَرِ أَوْ فِي الْبَرْدِ فَيُعَجِّلُ صَلَاةَ اللَّيْلِ وَ الْوَتْرَ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ.

Hadith.1380 - He (Layth al-Muradi) said: "I asked him (Abu Abdullah (as)) about a man who fears becoming ritually impure (janabah) while traveling or in cold weather and thus performs the night prayer (salat al-layl) and Witr at the beginning of the night. Imam (as) said: 'Yes.'"

لَيْسَ مِنْ عَبْدٍ إِلَّا وَ هُوَ يُوقَظُ فِي لَيْلَتِهِ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَإِنْ قَامَ كَانَ ذَلِكَ وَ إِلَّا جَاءَ الشَّيْطَانُ‌[1] فَبَالَ فِي أُذُنِهِ أَ وَ لَا يَرَى أَحَدُكُمْ أَنَّهُ إِذَا قَامَ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ قَامَ وَ هُوَ مُتَخَثِّرٌ[2] ثَقِيلٌ كَسْلَانُ.

"There is no servant except that they are awakened during the night once or twice. If they rise (for prayer), it will be for their benefit; otherwise, Shaytan comes and urinates in their ear. Do you not see that when one rises and has not risen for prayer, they do so sluggishly and heavily, feeling lazy?"

إِنِّي لَأَمْقُتُ الرَّجُلَ يَأْتِينِي فَيَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ عَمَلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَيَقُولُ أَزِيدُ كَأَنَّهُ يَرَى أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَصَّرَ فِي شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ إِنِّي لَأَمْقُتُ الرَّجُلَ قَدْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ‌[3] ثُمَّ يَسْتَيْقِظُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلَا يَقُومُ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الصُّبْحِ قَامَ يُبَادِرُهُ بِصَلَاتِهِ.

"I despise a man who comes to me asking about the actions of the Messenger of Allah (sw) and then says, 'Should I add more?' as if he sees that the Messenger of Allah (sw) was lacking in something. And I despise a man who has read the Qur'an and then wakes up during the night but does not rise (for prayer) until, when

مَا نَوَى عَبْدٌ أَنْ يَقُومَ أَيَّةَ سَاعَةٍ نَوَى فَعَلِمَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا وَكَّلَ بِهِ مَلَكَيْنِ يُحَرِّكَانِهِ تِلْكَ السَّاعَةَ.

"There is no servant who intends to rise (for prayer) at any hour they intend, and Allah (swt), Blessed and Exalted, knows this intention from them, except that He assigns two angels to move them at that hour."

إِذَا غَلَبَ الرَّجُلَ النَّوْمُ وَ هُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَضَعْ رَأْسَهُ فَلْيَنَمْ فَإِنِّي أَتَخَوَّفُ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُمَّ أَدْخِلْنِي الْجَنَّةَ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُمَّ أَدْخِلْنِي النَّارَ.

"If a man is overcome by sleep while he is in prayer, let him put his head down and sleep, for I fear that if he wishes to say, 'O’ Allah (swt), admit me to Paradise,' he might instead say, 'O’ Allah (swt), admit me to the Fire.'"

وَ رَوَى زَكَرِيَّا النَّقَّاضُ‌[5] عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ-

Hadith.1386 - Zakariyya al-Naqqad reported from Imam Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Baqir (as) regarding the words of Allah (swt), the Mighty and Majestic: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying" (Surah An-Nisa 4:43). Imam (as) said: "This includes the intoxication of sleep."
