1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from Jamil ibn Salih from Sama’a who has said the following: “I requested Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Teach me about Islam and belief. Are they different?’ He said, ‘Belief is inclusive of Islam but Islam is not inclusive of belief.’ I then asked, ‘Please describe them to me.’ He said, ‘Islam is to testify that no one deserves to be worshipped except Allah and to affirm the truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah. With it lives are protected, marriages and inheritance become lawful and a group of people acknowledge this much. Belief is guidance and that which forms in the heart of the qualities of Islam and that which takes form from its practice. Belief is a degree higher than Islam. Belief is inclusive of Islam in appearance but Islam is not inclusive of belief esoterically even though they may both apply to words and in description.’”

1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman from ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah, who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), this question: ‘There is one who has sustenance for only one day, or for only one month or one year. Should he give preference to another person who does not have sustenance even for one day, or one month or one year, or in all cases, is there no blame in not giving preference because of sustenance being barely enough for himself? He (the Imam) said, ‘There are two issues. Those of you who are more inclined to giving preference to others over themselves are excellent. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, has said, “They give preference to others over themselves even though they themselves are in dire need.” (59:9) The other issue is that in not giving preference to others over themselves, they are not blamed; however, a providing hand has the upper hand over a non-providing hand, but you must begin with your dependents.’”

I then asked abu Hanifah and the jurists of al-Kufah. They said that I must give as charity on his behalf. When I performed al-Hajj, I met ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Hassan during tawaf. I asked him, saying, ‘A man of your followers of the people of al-Kufah has died and has made a will in which he has asked me to perform al-Hajj for him from his legacy, but when I examined his legacy, it is not sufficient for al-Hajj and I asked the jurist in our area. They said that I must pay charity for him and I did so. What do you say about it?’ He said, ‘This is Ja‘far ibn Muhammad in al-Hijr. Go and ask him.’ I went in al-Hijr and found abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), under al-Mizab facing the house and praying. He (the Imam) turned to me, saw me and asked, ‘What do you need?’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I am a man from al-Kufah of your friends.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Leave it. What do you need?’ I then said, ‘A man has died and has made a will that al- Hajj must be performed from his legacy. I examined it and it is not sufficient for al-Hajj. I then asked the jurists about it in our area. They said that I must pay charity on his behalf.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What did you do with it?’ I replied, ‘I gave it in charity.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You are responsible, unless it was not sufficient even for performing al-Hajj from Makkah, but if it was sufficient for performing al-Hajj from Makkah, then you are responsible.’”

15. Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Fazaal, from Sa’albat Bin Maymoun, from Badr Bin Al-Khaleel Al-Asady who said: ‘I heard Abu Ja’far (asws) saying regarding the Statement of Allah (azwj) Mighty and Majestic: “[21:12] Yet, when they felt Our Punishment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it. [21:13] Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and to your homes in order that ye may be called to account.” He (asws) said: ‘When Al-Qaim (asws) makes the stand, and sends (an army) to the Clan of Umayya in Syria, so they will run away to ‘al-Rome’. So the Romans will say to them, ‘We will not let you enter until you become Christians’. So they will hang crosses upon their necks and allow them to enter. So when the companions of Al-Qaim (asws) descend upon them, they (Romans) will seek security and reconciliation. So the companions of Al-Qaim (asws) will say, ‘We will not do that until you hand over to us the ones who came to you beforehand from us’. So they will hand them over. So that is His (azwj) Statement: “[21:13] Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and to your homes in order that ye may be called to account”. He (asws) said: ‘So he (asws) will question them about the treasure although he (asws) knows more than them about it. So they will say, ‘O woe be upon us! Surely we have been unjust’. They will not cease invoking that invocation of theirs until they will be cut down to extinction by the sword’.
