1. Abu Ali al-Ash’ari and Muhammad ibn Yahya have narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Zurara from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Had people known how the beginning of the creation was, no one would have disagreed with another person. Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, before creating the creatures said, ‘Be a sweet water so I create from you My paradise and people who obey My commands. Be very salty water; from you I create My fire and those who disobey Me.’ He then commanded them to mix and from this the believers give birth to unbelievers and the unbelievers give birth to the believers. Then He took a clay from the surface of the earth and kneaded it very strongly whereby they (children of Adam) appeared as particles crawling about. He then said to the people of the right hand, ‘To paradise (you go) in peace.’ To the people of the left hand He said, ‘To the fire (you go) and I am not concerned.’ He then commanded a fire that began to blaze and He said to the people of the left hand, ‘Enter therein.’ They then were frightened thereby. He then said to the people of the right hand, ‘Enter the fire.’ They then entered therein and He said, ‘O fire be cool and peaceful.’ The fire became cool and peaceful. The people of the left hand then said, ‘O Lord forgive us and reduce our burden.’ The Lord said, ‘I have reduced it for you. Enter.’ They went but were afraid of it. It was there that obedience and disobedience came to take place. Thus, these will not be able to become of those and they will not be able to become of these.’”

Abu Hamza said, ‘And I read a Parchment in which was the speech on ascetism from the speeches of Ali (asws) Bin Al-Husayn (asws), and I wrote down what was in it. Then I came to Ali (asws) Bin Al-Husayn (asws), so I presented what was in it to him (asws). He (asws) recognised it, and corrected (my mistakes) from what I had (in my notes)’. In the Name of Allah (azwj), the Beneficent, the Merciful. Allah (azwj) is sufficient for us (asws). And beware of the plots of the unjust ones, and the rebellion of the envious ones, and the threats of the aggressors. O you Believers! Do not be deceived by the tyrants and those who follow them, from the people who covet this world, those that are inclined towards it, those who have been deceived by it, those who go towards it, and to its lifeless ruins, and its chaff which will be defunct tomorrow. And be cautious of what Allah (azwj) has Cautioned you from it, and abstain with regards to what Allah (azwj) has Told you to abstain from it, and do not incline towards what is in this world, inclining like the ones who has taken it to be as a house for permanent dwelling. By Allah (azwj), that which is in it is evidence for you and a warning from the changing of its days, and its conditions, and its examples, and it’s playing with its people. It raises the fallen one and degrades the honourable one, and it will return its people to the Fire tomorrow. In it, there is a significant learning and warning, that the affairs which you come across every day and night from the darkness of the strife, and the new innovations, and the unjust traditions, and the commotions of the era, and the dignity of the Sultan, and the whisperings of the Satan (la), all discourage the hearts from taking lessons from it, and boggle it from finding guidance, and the recognition of the people of the truth, except for a few whom Allah (azwj) has Protected. There is no one who will understand the changing of its days, and the alteration of its conditions, and hurtful consequences of its strife except for the one who is Protected by Allah (azwj), and Makes him to approach the way of guidance, and travels on the road purposefully. Then (he obtains) help against that by the ascetism, frequent thinking, paying attention to patience in order to notice the warning, and abstain from the immediate delights of the world, and defy its pleasures, and desire the Eternal Bliss of the Hereafter, and strive for it a striving. And he monitors the (approach of) death and passing away of the life with the unjust people. He looks at what is in the world with an illuminated vision, and the strife-taking place, and the misguidance of the innovations, and the injustices of the unjust kings. By my (asws) life, you have matters from the past which were from days in which were free from strife, pre-occupations and engagements which have evidenced for you on avoiding the misguided and the people of innovation (Heretics) who rebel and create mischief in the earth without any right to do so. So seek Help from Allah (azwj) and return to the obedience of Allah (azwj) and the obedience of the one (asws) who is the foremost for the obedience and to be followed and obeyed. So beware of the danger before the remorse and the regret before proceeding to Allah (azwj) and the pausing in front of Him (azwj), and no people ever went to Allah (azwj) after having disobeyed Him (azwj) except to His (azwj) Punishment, and no people preferred the world over the Hereafter at all except that evil was their return, and evil was their journey. The Knowledge, by Allah (azwj) and the deeds are nothing but two harmonious matters. So the one who recognises Allah (azwj) fears Him (azwj), and the fear urges him to the deeds in obedience to Allah (azwj) and that the heads of the knowledge and those that follow them recognise Allah (azwj) so they work (do deeds) for Him (azwj) and desire towards Him (azwj), and Allah (azwj) has Said: “[35:28] Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge”. So do not seek anything from this world by being disobedient to Allah (azwj), and preoccupy yourselves in this world by obedience to Allah (azwj), and seize its days, in a way to ensure your salvation ‘Tomorrow’ from the Punishment of Allah (azwj). That is the smallest consequence and the lowest form of excuse and the hope for the salvation. So give priority to the Commands of Allah (azwj) and the obedience to the one (asws) whose obedience Allah (azwj) has Made it to be more than obligatory in all the matters in front of you. Do not give priority to the commands, which come to you from being obedient to the tyrants about the attractions of this world as oppose to that of Allah (azwj) but rather submit to Him (azwj), and to the Masters of the Command (asws) (Ul Al-Amr) from among you. And know that you are all servants of Allah (azwj) and we (asws) are with you. There is a Ruler (azwj) Who will Rule over us (asws) and you tomorrow, who is the Chief of the rulers. And He (azwj) will Make you to pause and Question you, so prepare the answer before the pausing and the Questioning and presentation to the Lord (azwj) of the Worlds on the Day in which no soul shall speak except by His (azwj) Permission. And know that Allah (azwj), on that Day, will neither Ratify a liar nor will He (azwj) Belie a truthful one, nor will He (azwj) Reject the excuse of a deserving one, nor Excuse the one who has no justification, as He (azwj) has the Proof over His (azwj) creatures by the Messengers (as) and the successors (as) of the Messengers (sa). So fear Allah (azwj), servants of Allah (azwj), and welcome the correctors to yourselves, and the obedience to Allah (azwj) and the obedience to the ones (asws) whom Allah (azwj) has Made to be Guardians regarding it. Perhaps the remorseful ones may regret for having wasted their yesterday regarding the Side of Allah (azwj) (Junb Allah (azwj) i.e. Ali (asws)), and wasted the Rights of Allah (azwj). And seek Forgiveness from Allah (azwj) and repent to Him (azwj) for He (azwj) Accepts the repentance, and Forgives the sins and Knows what you are doing. And beware of the company of the disobedience ones, and the help of the unjust ones, and the compulsions of the mischievous ones. Be cautious of their strife and distance yourselves from their places. And know that the one who opposes the Guardians (asws) of Allah (azwj), and makes it to be a Religion without the Religion of Allah (azwj), and issues commands other than the commands of the Guardians (asws) of Allah (azwj) will be in the Inflamed Fire, which consumes the bodies from which its spirit is absent, and which have been overcome by its misfortune. (At preent) they are dead, not feeling the heat of the Fire, and had they been alive they would have found their suffering in the heat of the Fire. And take a lesson, O people of vision, and Praise Allah (azwj) for what He (azwj) has Guided you with, and know that you cannot escape from the Power of Allah (azwj) to another power. Allah (azwj) Sees your deeds, as well as His (azwj) Messenger, then to them will be your resurrection. So benefit from the advice, and educate yourselves with the discipline of the righteous.

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ibn ‘Udhayna from Zurara who has said the following: “Once a man asked abu Ja’far (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Majestic the Glorious, ‘When your Lord took from the back of the children of Adam their offspring and told them to bear testimony to the words of Allah, “Am I not your Lord,” they all said, “Yes, You are our Lord. . . .”’ (7:172) “He (the Imam), while his father (a.s.) was listening, said, ‘My father narrated to me that Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, took a handful of clay, from which He created Adam. He poured upon it sweet water from Euphrates and left it for forty mornings. Then He poured upon it very salty water and left it for forty mornings. When the clay fermented He then kneaded it strongly and they (children of Adam) appeared as particles from his right and left sides. He ordered all of them to enter the fire. The people of the right hand entered it and it became cool and peaceful for them but the people of the left hand refused to enter.’”

He then took a handful and kneaded it and then divided it in two parts with His hands then scattered them and they began to move. He then commanded the people of the right hand to enter in the fire. They went and entered into it and Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, commanded the fire to become cool and peaceful for them. When the people of the left hand observed it they said, ‘Our Lord, forgive us.’ He forgave them and said to them, ‘Enter into the fire.’ They went but did not enter therein. He then changed them to clay and He created Adam therefrom. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) then said, ‘Those will never be able to become these and they will never be able to become of those.’ He (a.s.) then said, ‘They saw the Messenger of Allah (a.s.) to be the first to enter that fire. For this reason is the words of Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, ‘(Muhammad), Say, “Had the Beneficent had a son then I would have been the first to worship.”’” (43: 81)

3. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al- Asadiy from Salim ibn Mukram who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One day a Jewish man passed by the Holy Prophet, who said, “Assam Alaykum,” and the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, “Wa ‘Alayka” (the same to you). His companions said, ‘What the Jewish person said meant “death to you.’” The Holy Prophet said, ‘I said the same to you.’ The Holy Prophet then said, ‘A black serpent will bite him (Jewish man) on his back, and it will kill him.’ The Jewish man went and collected a great deal of firewood, then carried it on his back; after a short while, he returned. The Messenger of Allah asked him to leave his firewood on the ground. He agreed, not realizing there was a black serpent biting on a twig inside the bunch of firewood. The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘What did you do today, Jewish man?’ He replied, ‘I did not do anything other than collecting this firewood and moving. While returning, I ate one of the two cakes I had, and gave the other one as charity to a destitute person.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Because of that charity, Allah protected you. Giving charity repels bad forms of death from man.’”

6. Muhammad ibn Ahmad has narrated from ibn al-Salt from Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from Yahya ibn Muhammad who has narrated the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘O believing people there must be two just (Muslim) witnesses when anyone of you is about to die or from other people.’ (5:106) Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said that in this verse, “‘The two from you”, means two Muslims and “the two from others”, means the people of the book. If two people from the followers of the bible are not found then two Zoroastrians can bear witness. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, established a Sunnah about Zoroastrians like that for the people of the book in paying al-Jizyah (taxes). Thus, if one dies in loneliness in a strange land and cannot find two Muslims, he can appoint two men from the people of the book who are then kept in custody after Salat (prayer). They will take an oath on Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, saying that they do not sell their oath in exchange for a small price, even in favor of their relatives, that they do not hide the testimony for the sake of Allah; in so doing they will be committing sins.’ He (the Imam) said, ’This applies only when the heirs of the deceased doubt their testimony and it is found out that they have testified falsely. The heir cannot invalidate their testimony without presenting two witnesses who stand in place of the first two witnesses and take the oath on Allah that their testimony is more accurate than the testimony of the first two witnesses; if we transgress, we will be unjust. If this happens then the testimony of the first two becomes invalid and the testimony of the two later witnesses is admitted as valid. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “This will help preserve a proper testimony. The witnesses will be afraid of the rejection of their own testimony by a second pair of witnesses. Have fear of Allah and listen (properly). Allah does not guide the evil doing people.” (5:108)”’

7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his people in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Tamim al-Dariy, ibn Baydiy and ibn Mariya once left for a journey. Tamim al-Dariy was a Muslim but ibn Baydiy and ibn Mariya were Christians and they were with Tamim al-Dariy who had certain assets and utensils, which were decorated with gold, and a necklace that he took for the Arab markets for sale. Tamim al-Dariy became ill severely and the time of his death came. He gave whatever he had to ibn Baydiy and ibn Mariya and asked them to deliver it to his heirs. The two came to al-Madinah, delivered the other things but they had taken the utensils and the necklace. The heirs found the utensils missing; so the family of Tamim asked the two men, ’Did he (Tamim) remain ill for a long time and incurred a large amount of expenses?’ The two replied, ‘He remained ill only for few days.’ They then asked, ’Was anything stolen from him during his journey?’ The two replied, ‘No, nothing was stolen from him during his journey.’ They then asked, ‘Did he make any business deals that caused him losses?’ The two replied, ‘No, he did not make any such deals.’ They then said, ‘The most expensive things are missing like the utensils decorated with gold and gems and a necklace.’ The two said, ‘Whatever he gave to us we have given to you.’ They then took the two before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and he (the Messenger of Allah) judged that the two must take an oath. The two took an oath and they were released but the utensils and necklace were seen with them. The heirs of Tamim went to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, our assets have been seen in the possession of ibn Baydiy and ibn Mariya.’ The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, waited to hear from Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, a judgment in the case. Allah, most Blessed, most High, then revealed, ‘Believers, when death approaches any one of you, allow two just men from your own people (Muslims) or any two other men (people of the book), if incident of death befalls you on a journey, bear witness to the bequest. [Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, applied the testimony of the people of the book about the will when it is on a journey and Muslims are not found] If you have any doubts about their (others’) honesty, detain them and allow them take an oath after the prayer, each one of them saying, “I swear by Allah that my testimony is true. I am not selling the Truth for a paltry price even though the beneficiary would be one of my relatives. I do not hide the testimony which is the right of Allah, for then I will be one of the sinners.” (5:106)’ This is the testimony, which is sanctioned by the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. Tf their honesty is challenged, [they took false oath], two others from the relatives of the deceased should swear in the same way and testify to the bequest saying, “We swear by Allah that our testimony is the more accurate one. We do not transgress in the matter lest we become unjust ones.” (5:107)’ The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, commanded the heirs of Tamim al-Dariy to take an oath according to His command. They took an oath and the Messenger of Allah took the utensils and the necklace from ibn Baydiy and ibn Mariya and returned them to the heirs of Tamim al-Dariy. This is the least in presenting the testimony as it is for fear of another oath’s rejection of their oath thereafter.”

8. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from more than one narrator from Ali ibn Asbat from al-Hassan ibn al-Jahm who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once in response to the words of Isma‘il ibn Muhammad that his son had given charity on his behalf and that he is a man, said this. ‘Ask him to give charity, even if it is only a small piece of bread.’ The Imam then said that abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘A man in banu Israel had a son whom he loved a great deal. In his dream, he was told, “One night, after going to bed with his wife, your son will die.” His father helped him to get married and when that night came, he was concerned about his dream. In the morning he found his son safe and alive. He went to him and asked, “Son, did you do any good deed last night?” He replied, “No, except that a beggar came to the door last night. They had spared some food for me, and I gave it to the beggar.” He then said, “Because of this, (Allah) has repelled misfortune from you.””’

9. Through the same chain of narrators, it is narrated from Ali ibn Asbat from the chain of his narrators who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said a man and I shared a piece of land. The man was an astrologer. He would find the lucky hour for his coming out of his home and an unlucky hour for me to come out of my home. We divided it, and my share was the better one. The man struck his hand against the other and said, ‘I have never seen such a day!’ I then said, ‘Woe upon the others. What is the matter?’ He said, ‘I am an astrologer. I asked you to come out from your home in an unlucky hour, and I came out in a lucky hour. We divided it, but your share came out to be the better one.’ I then asked, ‘Can I narrate to you a Hadith my father narrated to me? The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “If one has a wish before Allah to remove the evil of an unlucky hour from him, he should begin his day by giving charity. For giving charity, Allah removes the evil of the unlucky hour from him. If one has a wish before Allah to remove the evil of the unlucky hour of the night from him, he should begin his night by giving charity. For giving charity, Allah removes the evil of the unlucky hour of the night from him.” I began my coming out by giving charity. This is better than your astrology.’”

10. AI-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘affa’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali af-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), say, ‘Among banu Israel there was a man who did not have a son. When he became the father of a son, he was told that his son would die on the night of his marriage. The boy waited until the night of his marriage, when he saw a frail, old man. He felt sympathy for him and invited him for food. The old man said to him, “You revived me, and I pray to Allah to give you life.” He (the father) was told in his dream to ask his son about what he had done. He asked his son, and his son told him about his treatment of the old man. Someone in his dream, again, told him that Allah has protected your son from dying because of his good treatment of the old man.’”

At that time, one of the extended over-hangings of the Masjid fell on a man and injured his leg. Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), told us to ask him about what he has done today. When people asked him about it, he said, ‘When I came out of my home, there were some dates in my sleeve.
