1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hafs ibn af-Bakhtariy and Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that they (people of the cemetery) take comfort in you. When you disappear from them they become afraid.”

1. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A woman in the state of Ihram can wear whatever she wants of clothes except silk and al-Quffazayn (something women wear on their hands) and wearing veil is undesirable.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They must hang something over their face.’ He asked, ‘How far down over the face?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It should be down over the nose so that she can see without her eyes being blocked.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ لكِنْ لا تُواعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً قَالَ هُوَ الرَّجُلُ يَقُولُ لِلْمَرْأَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْقَضِيَ عِدَّتُهَا أُوَاعِدُكِ بَيْتَ آلِ فُلَانٍ لِيُعَرِّضَ لَهَا بِالْخِطْبَةِ وَ يَعْنِي بِقَوْلِهِ‌ إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً التَّعْرِيضَ بِالْخِطْبَةِ- وَ لا تَعْزِمُوا عُقْدَةَ النِّكاحِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتابُ أَجَلَهُ‌.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the meaning of the words of Allah, "... but you must not secretly date (make secret appointment with) such women (during their waiting period) unless you speak to them in a lawful manner.’ (2:235) He (the Imam) said, ’He is a man who speaks to the woman before she completes her waiting period saying, “I invite you for a date in the house of so and so” and to propose marriage to her and His word, “Unless you speak to them in a lawful way” is a reference to “proposing marriage”, “. . . but you must not decide for marriage until the appointed waiting period is complete...” (2:235)’”

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa that Sama‘ah said: "I asked him (Imam al-Sadiq) about visiting graves and building Masjids therein. He said, 'As for the visitation of graves, there is no issue with it, but a masjid should not be built there.'"

2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from ‘Isma‘il ibn Mehran al-Nadr ibn Suwayd who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a woman and about what she can wear in the state of Ihram. He (the Imam) said, ‘She can wear all kinds of clothes except what is dyed with saffron and al-Wars (a certain plant used in dying cloths). She must not wear al-Qafazin, ornaments for beautification before her husband, she must not use kohl, unless it is to cure an illness, she must not touch perfumes, must not wear jewelry or Artemisia (a certain aromatic plant); however printed clothes are not harmful.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ لكِنْ لا تُواعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً وَ لا تَعْزِمُوا عُقْدَةَ النِّكاحِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتابُ أَجَلَهُ‌ فَقَالَ السِّرُّ أَنْ يَقُولَ الرَّجُلُ مَوْعِدُكِ بَيْتُ آلِ فُلَانٍ ثُمَّ يَطْلُبُ إِلَيْهَا أَنْ لَا تَسْبِقَهُ بِنَفْسِهَا إِذَا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا قُلْتُ فَقَوْلُهُ‌ إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً هُوَ طَلَبُ الْحَلَالِ فِي غَيْرِ أَنْ يَعْزِمَ عُقْدَةَ النِّكَاحِ‌ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتابُ أَجَلَهُ‌.

2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . but you must not secretly date such women (during their waiting period) unless you speak to them in a lawful manner and you must not decide to form terms of marriage until the appointed time is complete.’ (2:235). He (the Imam) said, ‘The word “secret” means his saying, “The place of your date is the house of so and so”, then calls her to that place then asks her not to decide to get married with someone else before him when waiting period is complete.’ I then asked about, ‘Except if you speak in a lawful manner.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is seeking lawful matters without determination for marriage until the appointed time of waiting period is complete.’”

[3]قال السيّد- رحمه اللّه-: لا يجوز التعريض و التصريح بالخطبة لذات العدة الرجعية إجماعا و اما جواز التعريض للمعتدة في العدة البائنة دون التصريح لها بذلك فقال: انه موضع وفاق ايضا و يدلّ عليه قوله تعالى:« وَ لا جُناحَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِيما عَرَّضْتُمْ بِهِ مِنْ خِطْبَةِ النِّساءِ أَوْ أَكْنَنْتُمْ فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ أَنَّكُمْ سَتَذْكُرُونَهُنَّ وَ لكِنْ لا تُواعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً» و تقدير الكلام علم اللّه انكم ستذكرونهن فاذكروهن« و لا تواعدوهن سرا، و السر كناية عن الوطى لانه ممّا يسر و معناه و لا تواعدوهن جماعا الا أن تقولوا قولا معروفا و القول المعروف هو التعريض كما ورد في أخبارنا و التعريض هو الإتيان بلفظ يحتمل الرغبة في النكاح و غيرها مثل أن يقول لها: انك الجميلة او من غرضى أن أتزوج، او عسى اللّه ان ييسر لي امرأة صالحة و نحو ذلك من الكلام الموهم أنّه يريد نكاحها حتى ظهر من نفسها عليه أن رغبت فيه و لا يصرح بالنكاح.( آت)ص 434

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hisham Ibn Salim who has said the following: “I heard the Imam (a.s.), say, 'Fatima (a.s) lived for seventy-five days after her father but she was never seen smiling or laughing. Every Friday she would visit the graves of the martyrs twice, (and once) on Mondays and Thursdays and (she) would say, 'There was the Messenger of Allah (s.w.) and there were the pagans.'"

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that abu Ja‘far (a.s.), once said to a woman veiled in the state of Ihram, ‘Assume the state of Ihram with your face uncovered and allow your clothes to hang down from over your head; if you use veil, your color will not change.’ A man then asked, ‘How far down must she hang her clothes? Must she cover her eyes?’ I then asked, ‘Can it reach down to her mouth?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is permissible.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Women in the state of Ihram must not wear jewelry and dyed clothes, unless it (dye) is of saffron.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Ali ibn abu Hamzah who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . but you must not secretly date such women (during their waiting period).’ (2:235). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is his saying, “The place for your date (with me) is the house of the family of so and so where he asks her for rafath (sexual intercourse) and performs it, and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “Unless you speak in a lawful manner.” Speaking in a lawful manner is proposing for marriage the way it should be in a lawful manner which is, “You must not decide forming the terms of marriage until the appointed time of waiting period is complete.’””

4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from abu al-Hassan (a.s.), who has said the following: “I asked the Imam (a.s.), ‘Does a believing deceased notice who has visited his grave?’ He replied, ‘Yes, and he continues to take comfort in his visitor as long as he is near his grave. When the visitor stands up and leaves the gravesite he (the deceased) becomes afraid and lonely.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Hassan al-Ahmasiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who wears a turban al- Sabiriy with prints of silk on it in the state of Ihram. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, she can use it. It is not permissible only when both of its warp and weft are of silk.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘Abu Sa‘id asked me about al-Khamisah (shawl) which has its warp of silk to make her wear because of feeling cold and I instructed him to make her wear it.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from ibn Mahbub from “Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once abu Ja’far (a.s.), and I passed by al-Baqi’ cemetery. We then passed by the grave of a person from al-Kufah who was a Shi ‘ah Muslim. The narrator has said that the Imam stood on his grave and said, ‘O Lord, grant him mercy and kindness in his loneliness, provide him company in his solitude, comfort him in his distress and give him such serenity, through Your mercy, that can suffice him in place of the kindness and mercy of everyone beside You. Join him with those whom he loved (accepted as his guardians).”’

He (the Imam) said, ‘She can wear all kinds of clothes except al-Qafazin, veil and silk. I then asked, ‘Can she wear al-Khazz (a certain kind of fabric), with its warp made of silk?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘As long as it is not pure silk, it is permissible.”’

9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad who has said the following: “I was in Fayd (a place near Makkah). Ali ibn Bilal and I went to visit the grave of Muhammad ibn Isma’il ibn Bazi‘ and Ali ibn Bilal said, ‘The dweller of this grave narrated to me from al-Rida’ (a.s.), the following: “If one visits the grave of his brother (in belief), places his hand over the grave and reads Surah 97 of the Holy Quran seven times he, on the distressful Day (of Judgment) will be granted full protection and peace.’””

Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufi has narrated from Ibn Jumhur from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar from Abu 'Abdillah (al-Sadiq) (as), and so has ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdul Rahman al-Asamm from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim that Abu 'Abdillah (al-Sadiq) said that Amir al-Mu’minin (as) said: "Visit your dead people for they become happy due to your visit. One of you should ask for his wishes near the grave of his father and near the grave of his mother, with supplications for them [that they'll be pleased with]."

11. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who is in the state of Ihram: if she can wear trousers. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, she can do so because she needs it for covering.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ يَكُونُ عَلَيْهَا الْحُلِيُّ وَ الْخَلْخَالُ وَ الْمَسَكَةُ وَ الْقُرْطَانِ‌ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْوَرِقِ تُحْرِمُ فِيهِ وَ هُوَ عَلَيْهَا وَ قَدْ كَانَتْ تَلْبَسُهُ فِي بَيْتِهَا قَبْلَ حَجِّهَا أَ تَنْزَعُهُ إِذَا أَحْرَمَتْ أَوْ تَتْرُكُهُ عَلَى حَالِهِ قَالَ تُحْرِمُ فِيهِ وَ تَلْبَسُهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ تُظْهِرَهُ لِلرِّجَالِ فِي مَرْكَبِهَا وَ مَسِيرِهَا.

Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a woman: if she can wear an anklet, handgrips and earrings of gold and silver while at home she wore them before al-Hajj. Must she remove them or leave them as they are? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is unlawful to wear them in the state of Ihram; however, she can wear them in a way that men cannot see when she is riding or walking.’”
